C'mon...Turn On The Bright Lights has got to be one of the best albums of last year.  And people are still getting into it.  It's a great record that, for me, gets better every time I hear it.
Also bands like The Walkmen and French Kicks are incredible too.

Sleuth

I like to hug dogs

Pwaybloe

My sister got me into them recently.  Their album is sitting in my CD player right now.  Very retro.

Pwaybloe

Well, it looks like no one else really listens to them, but I can't get enough of 'em.  For some reason their album just won't get out of my CD player.

It's good to see modern rock coming out of the slump of hip-hop rock or whatever it's called.  I recently read an article about how important and profound Linkin Park and their new album is.  It was absolutely hilarious.

Sigur Rós

phil marlowe

read a bit about them here and there and everyone allways has very fine things to say about them. ill definatly check them out at roskilde.

moonshiner

i like their stuff especially Stella Was a Diver..., i listened to this their cd constantly for about a week straight but haven't really picked them up since...a little too derivative for dedicated listening

Turn On The Bright Lights showed tremendous potential. I can't wait for their next record. Of the bands that have emerged so far, it looks like Interpol, The Strokes, The White Stripes, and Sigur Ros will be great artists of this decade.

The first track from TOTBL was on "Friends" last night.

The outro-cliffhanger theme at the end?? I THOUGHT I recognized it!

"Lacan stressed more and more in his work the power and organizing principle of the symbolic, understood as the networks, social, cultural, and linguistic, into which a child is born. These precede the birth of a child, which is why Lacan can say that language is there from before the actual moment of birth. It is there in the social structures which are at play in the family and, of course, in the ideals, goals, and histories of the parents. This world of language can hardly be grasped by the newborn and yet it will act on the whole of the child's existence."

Yeah, but the Beasties weren't so regressive as a lot of the other stuff.

I will third that the whole "rap-rock" thing has to go, though.

And maybe, just maybe, Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

I do really enjoy the Interpol album. "NYC" is probably my favorite song. I love the line "The subway is a porno." Very evocative. And I'm not being facetious.

Of your list, only The Strokes have a legit chance at that, IMO.

Interpol:  great, but too retro and faddy and esoteric to appeal to masses the way Radiohead does (and I'm using R-head as an example of a former "artist/band of the decade").  It'll take a miraculous second album with a left-field hit.

The White Stripes:  already out of ideas after 4 albums.  They'll be gone sooner than you think.

Sigur Ros:  already out of ideas after 3 albums and they'll never have mass appeal.

The Strokes:  retro and faddy, yes, but not all that esoteric.  Proven mass appeal already.  Of the four, the most likely to have a second or third album bigger and better than their first (and I'm not counting the first 2 White Stripes records...no one heard them—NO ONE).
