Title: PTA DVD Project?
Post by: depooter on April 11, 2003, 07:18:18 PM
Is it time we put together a compilation of interesting PTA related interviews, etc for posterity on DVD?! I'm not talking about PTA sensitive copyrighted stuff like shorts and music videos, but I am talking about the things I have (listed below). If we can find someone trustworthy to helm the project and DVD preparation, then I'm willing to lend my VHS stuff. I'm sure others here can add to the collection.....let me know your thoughts.

Indepedent Focus with PTA
Charlie Rose - Interview 10/30/97
PDL Press Conference - PTA and Sandler - Toronto Film Fest
SNL FANatic (I think this would be OK since it's on TV all the time)
Charlie Rose - Magnolia era interview with PTA
VH1 Special: Magnolia - Hollywood & Vinyl
PTA - Conan appearance - Magnolia era.

I'm sure you guys have more you can add.

I also have PTA related stuff on vhs like:
Julianne Moore - Regis
Aimee Mann - Save Me - Leno
Macy - Craig Kilborne
Aimee Mann - Craig Kilborne
Etc.

Thanks
Greg

That would be awesome...I'd definitely buy a copy.

I've always wanted to see the SNL thing...and I never even knew he was on Conan, I must see that.

Anyway, I guess we should do some of the Cannes interviews...those were awesome. Don't have any links or anything.

i can easily convert things to digital directly from tv at broadcast quality, and can also transfer VHS tapes to digital, and from there i can upload them somewhere so whoever is compiling all this stuff into a dvd can use it.  if these things are running on tv at any time in the future, i'll capture it live and you'll have a broadcast quality 1st generation version on the dvd, not a 2nd generation vhs version.

i tested it out with the simpsons and this (http://ambulance.planet1337.com/sideshowbob.jpg) is the kind of quality I got.

Not a thing to sell, a thing to share. I think if we can find someone to do it well and cheap, we can probably do it for postage and the cost of burning the DVD-R.....

OK, since I find a terrible hate for the girl off Hot Ticket, name not worth saying, I am really wanting to see her review of Magnolia. She fucking called Secretary one of the most original movies she had ever seen. This may not work, but can one contact the production company of Ebert's show and ask to buy this specific episode on vhs? I think they do this for like $30 or something. It would be worth it.

paaaah, for the past week and a half i've been trying to get all the pta music videos onto dvd. it's just not working out for me. i got fiona's across the universe from the pleasantville dvd, save me from the magnolia dvd, try from the boogie nights dvd, here we go from the pdl sdtrck, and limp, paper bag, and fast as you can from the european paper bag single. the last three are in pal format and not as high quality as the others since they're only mpeg-1 (here we go is also not as high quality and is a mov file). this shit's impossible. Holy shit JB, I remember seeing that when it originally aired. I completely forgot about it until now because I only watched it once. I remember thinking, even way back then when just getting into movies, "Fuck, she had the mind of a 9th grader in understanding movies. Even I know what it means." It was truly sweet and she needs to be shot in the foot and restricted from covering the wound only to die a terrible death as the foot ever so slowly bleeds to death. God will forbid her entrance into Heaven by saying this, "What the fuck? You didn't get the meaning of the frogs in Magnolia? Didn't you read the bible!?"

A sense of happiness has come over me now.

Many thanks, JB. Great stuff, or shall I say, great bad stuff. Ebert was great in pointing out the thing Anderson has going for him that I'm not sure any other director these days has, and thats pure freedom in his films. Its a hard thing to get and even if you may like other directors, you still can kinda predict or assume what they will do next or how they will do it. The female critic with the last name that is hard to spell only feeds for the encouragement of by the books filmmaking that everyone is being dragged along. It's just that some can spin interesting stories along the way.

I wouldn't go so far as to praise the erratic and often virtually illiterate Ebert, but he comes off very well in this case. But the other woman was, what, a local radio or TV critic? Those people are paid for their idiocy.

The thing that pissed me off the most was nothing about the frogs. It was a local (Portland, OR) critic calling the "Wise Up" sequence "something out of Cop Rock." So many things wrong with that statement. I never trusted that reviewer's opinion again (though I should've been forewarned when he gave Saving Private Ryan five stars... out of four. What an asshole).

Ebert has a love, passion, and appreciation for movies that always shows, no matter how literate he is. This is a man who took the torch from Pauline Kael, and made film criticism into a celebrity -- and he did it sincerely. It's so not cool to hack Ebert.

I agree, but it takes more than love, passion, and appreciation to make a good writer. Kael passed her torch to no-one, though there were a great many who angled for it... I do respect the qualities you mention, and he may be responsible for praising a fair number of under-the-carpet films to a mainstream American audience, but when it comes to Ebert as a writer... well, I often find myself rolling my eyes far, far back into my head.
Title: PTA DVD Project?
Post by: Gold Trumpet on May 13, 2003, 05:47:56 PM
I always knew Ebert was not the best of writers, but with the thoughts he gave me in devloping my own taste, I didn't think the writing was that important. The more and more I grow, the more I am disagreeing with Ebert but on the whole, I would say my taste is generally best with his.

The critic that is the most challenging for me and the very best writer though is Stanley Kauffmann. Sometimes I think he is completely wrong, but sometimes I think he says things no one else will observe on a movie and be of genius because he will be exactly correct. Kauffmann is the one now who is forwarding my understanding of the movies and giving me the example of how to write really great reviews in one a few paragraphs for each movie. You name the movie, the guy likely didn't like it, but he always makes you think over your own reasons in the most challeging way which is best for me. His big list of bad films from 2001 reads as everyone's top ten best list, with notable exceptions like In the Bedroom and Mulholland Drive, which he loved. The most ballsy film critic and prolly the most interested in the art of it all.

...which just goes to show it's an editorial flaw that's partly to blame for bringing down the quality of movie reviews. Not that I don't like Night of the Hunter (Agee was quite a well-known film writer, too), but you have got to give your writers their own voice and let them keep it. As a freelance writer, I've experienced the same thing you have... stop toeing the part line even for a second, and they find ways to silence you.

I am disappointed about the PTA thing... does this mean the actual short itself will not be released, or just that DVDs will be unavailable?

My mom used to read my Ebert reviews, and then once I could read myself I became addicted. He's one of my biggest inspirations, actually. I think he's a truly great writer, and even when I disagree with him, he makes it easy to see where he's coming from (most of the time -- his reviews of Raising Arizona comes to mind, and Spawn). One of my dreams is to read his review of one of my films someday.

No, more his plodding, sluggish plot summaries and the distinct impression of light bulbs going off over his head all the time.

For Pulitzer Prize-winning critics, I prefer Jay Sherman. Of all the Pulitzer prize winners, only Eudora Welty can best him at a belching contest.

Speaking of the Pulitzers, I'm now officially ashamed to be seen out of doors with my copy of Jeffrey Eugenides's Middlesex, lest anyone think I scurried out to nab it merely because it won some prize. Thanks a lot, Pulitzer committee.

It is a really good book, though.  Has anyone read it? I wonder if they'll make it into a movie?

Quote...sluggish plot summaries...
That is the only thing about Ebert I dislike. I cannot stand it when he does a quick run down of the plot. Often it is a paragraph that simply does not need to be told. His best reviews are the ones that just talk about aspects of the movie and leave the plot completely untouched.

i have a ton of respect for that man.  his reviews are always very fair (plus i usually agree with him), and he just seems like such a fan sometimes (read some of the stuff he wrote about, say -- minority report.)

What are the chances of getting The Flagpole Special on this DVD?  I'd kill to see it.  Also PTA has mentioned in interviews that he, John C., and PSH shot COPS-like videos while waiting for the whole Hard Eight/Sydney debacle to pan out.  Claims it also provided stuff for Jim Kurring character.  What are the chances of getting that on the DVD?

flagpole special was screened maybe once or twice, but no bootlegs have been released otherwise.  the COPS-like videos are probably in a box in pta's closet somewhere, and unless you know how to open a closet, i doubt it'll be on the dvd.

I'd volunteer for the project, except for the fact that I have to wonder about the legality of this.

I mean, does Paul really want this stuff floating around?

You might find some people on ebay that are willing to break the law and sell those shorts (hint hint). But I won't be responsible for distributing them illegally. That's just me.

Sphinx -

once you've put it all together, will there be a limited run of these DVDs? Maybe you should put a sticky up, see how many people are interested..

Also, for transfer of postage fees, will you have a paypal-esque service? I'm based in Japan, but please don't discriminate!

Many thanks.

I would do everything for a DVD with his shorts:

- Flagpole Special
- Blossoms & Blood
- SNL Fanatic
- The Dirk Diggler Story
- Cigarettes & Coffee

i'm guessing it'll be a somewhat limited distribution altogether, i'm making them and greg (and his associates) are copying/distributing them.

The idea's been around since April, actually.  At least, that's when the thread started.  I'd just like a straight answer if this thing's happening or not.  I'd do what I could to help, as would most other people wanting to see it happen.  Even paying costs for a copy for myself, which is probably a given anyway.

So?

yes. it's happening. These things take time. We got lots of material to transfer, menus to create, trying to squeeze as much as possible on one dvd, then finding someone who can replicate multiple copies, accept payment, ship them out, etc., etc.

be patient, it will get done and will be worth the wait.

thanks

I'd love to get in on this. Looking forward to it one day happening.

But I'd like to add an idea for the DVD:
How about ya'll include the radio interviews? While the audio's running you could have a stills gallery specific to what they're talking about. For example, when they're talking about a specific scene in Magnolia, show stills from that scene to better illustrate what they're discussing.

Just a thought.

Are people still gathering material for the DVD of PTA rarities? or has that been canceled? because if there is still a demand, count me in.  Im sure many people have the supplies to do the DVD authoring, but if not, i am willing to.  I run on a apple G4 and DVD studio pro, i know that isn't to speical in today's market for film making production, but i have the time to help.
