Title: Wilco
Post by: European Son on May 06, 2003, 03:25:16 AM
Anyone else think Yankee Hotel Foxtrot is brilliant? Sure you do. I saw them live a few days ago, and the YHF songs didn't translate that well to the stage since it's such a studio heavy album. I'd like for them to get back into the studio and record a new record, but they're going to be touring this summer and opening for R.E.M. this fall. Oh well.

It was one of my favorite albums of last year, for sure. 'I Am Trying To Break Your Heart' was a great documentary, too. It was great to see them playing earlier versions of the songs, as they evolved.

fucking fantastic. best record all of last year.  i saw them playing the YHF songs last year and the previous (before the record came out they toured with the new songs since they had been dropped from their label) and really enjoyed them live.  summer teeth had previously been one of my favorite albums of all time but then YHF took them in a direction i couldnt have anticipated and now love them more than ever.  I AM TRYING TO BREAK YOUR HEART is an incredible music documentary for any body who hasnt seen it.  as for a new album, you can download (for free mp3) their new EP "More Like The Moon" off their website www.wilcoworld.net for free if you have YHF.  it includes an alternate version of kamera and a few songs recorded with YHF and since.  very cool.  has anyone else heard the outtakes from the record?  they are pretty incredible.  a few months after it came out i received about 21 songs (previously unreleased and alternate takes) of songs recorded during the YHF sessions and i think some of them are really incredible.  im interested to hear?

Yeah I have it on DVD. It's very interesting, not straying much from usual rock band documentaries. You get stuff like the recording of the album, touring, record company politics. Sam Jones did a wonderful job on it. I'm glad it was made if just for the fact that it gives us a document of the making of a record that was an instant classic. If you're even a casual Wilco fan you should watch it.

I would love to have the earlier versions in their entirety....this is an album with so much weight that i've had it since it came out, and haven't had a true appreciation of it 'til now....can't wait to see what they do next.

i agree. i liked the album when it came out but i think it wasnt really until recently that i truly appreciated how incredible it is.  i have 3 alternate versions of kamera alone plus a whole disc of alt. takes/versions and unused cuts.  the movie and the outtakes are really companion pieces to the album.  together they really give you a good idea of the whole process that made yhf so great.  has anyone else heard any of these outtakes?

Anyone else concerned about the future of Wilco without Jay Bennett in the band? Well, I wouldn't say concerned......more like bummed. I know that Jeff is more than capable of handling the songwriting by himself, but Jay was a pretty major contributor. I guess we'll find out when the next album is released.

One of the songs, "Laminated Cats" I think, is an alternate, Loose Fur version of "Not for the Season."  Also, there are a few songs here sung by YHF's mixer/producer Jim O'Rourke.  Wild, experimental, excellent stuff.

yeah i actually have that.  its a little more experimental than i like, but its good.  (prefer wilco though).  but i did see the wilco/sonic youth tour about a week ago and jim o rourke came out with wilco and they played "laminated cat", (which is the really weird version of "not for the season").  it was pretty neat.

I moved from the midwest to atlanta last summer, I hitch hiked most of the way. (No need to panic, I had my trusty pepper spray.) Anyway, one of the nice fellows who drove me down was listening to a Wilco CD. I had never heard of them before, but loved them instantly. He told me who they were and one of the first things I did with my first paycheck was buy their album Yankee Hotel Foxtrot.
Wilco was a good omen, as I see it now.

Anyway, I must ask this question of all Wilco fans: which do you prefer, Mermaid Avenue or Mermaid Avenue Volume II?
I personally prefer Volume II.

That next record (or should we say "cd"?) is now entitled "A ghost is
born"
and will, if the schedule holds, be released by Nonesuch in North
America on June 8 and their affiliated labels virtually everywhere else
in the world that same week. The track listing is as follows:

At least that's what you said
Hell is
Chrome
Spiders (kidsmoke)
Muzzle of Bees
Hummingbird
Handshake drugs

Company in my back
I'm a wheel
Wishful thinking
Late greats
Theologians
Less than you think

i, for one, will not compare, just bask in the glory of Wilco's ever-evolving sound...Jeff Tweedy is a genius, i have to believe the absence of Jay Bennett on this record allowed Jeff to be more focused, their just can't be two heads leading a band

Post by: modage on May 15, 2004, 10:11:52 AM
yeah i have a whole disc of their studio demos for YHF (i think its 21 tracks of either unreleased songs for YHF or alternate/early versions of the songs on the album).  i also have a similar (but shorter) one for Summer Teeth that i just found on Soulseek.  the YHF one was sent to me by a friend a few years ago who got it from a friend.  (i have no idea).  its amazing though.  none of the songs are taken from the doc, i can only assume wilcos personal studio tapes leaked, and unfortunately does not include a acoustic version of i am trying to break your heart like the one at the beginning of the film (which i would LOVE to have a full version of).

I have everything from this band. (From Live whatnot to demos, etc.)They are my favs. I do have the acoustic I.A.T.T.B.Y.H. form the film and as well as a live version that is even better. Feel free to ask.

The new album is wonderful and still kicking my ass. I recommend it to all, but IMO it is a mandatory 5 solid listens before passing true judgement. Be patient with it, if you don't dig it already.

saw wilco for the 4th time last week.  god, i LOVE this band.  and every time i see them they've mutated into some completely other band.  (besides switching out a few band members), just the whole vibe of each show is so different than any of the previous ones.  they did tons off the new album, only 1 off AM, 1 off Being There, a few off Summerteeth and a few more off YHF.  jeff tweedy looked like a wild animal with his hair all long and a full suit on.  the highlight of the show is when they played hummingbird and he didnt play an instrument.  (!)  it was great, i couldnt believe it.  if anyone else has a chance to see them on this tour; do.

yeah they did.  my only complaint actually is they played 1 or 2 too many instrumental freakout 9 minute songs, but other than that it was great.  they actually played   spiders  (along with a handful of the new songs) when they went on tour with sonic youth last summer.  also, if you didnt know they have 6 guys in the band/on stage now, which is quite a change from 4.  it SOUNDED great at the 9:30 club because it wasnt so loud it distorted everything.  you could hear every vocal, guitar, noise perfectly.

I've been listening to a ghost is born pretty much nonstop since I picked it up yesterday, and I'm still trying to wrap my head around it. The thing that strikes me the most about it is how Tweedy's pop sensibilities and his ability to write amazing songs are not what makes this album so good...the more traditional pieces, like Muzzle of Bees or Hummingbird, are the ones that get left in the dust by the vastly deconstructed expanses of most of the other tracks (Less Than You Think being the most obvious example), where what were probably normal songs at one point get pushed and prodded to experimental heights (or depths, depending on your point of view, but I'm saying heights). It's a progression of the same process you see in I Am Trying To Break Your Heart, where the YHF songs we see them playing are in a much more traditional form than their eventual album versions.
Title: Wilco
Post by: moonshiner on June 23, 2004, 02:50:55 PM
i've been loving this album.....very difficult to compare A Ghost is Born to Yankee Hotel Foxtrot though, to me Ghost is a lot more personal, raw effort than their previous works, not as strong lyrically but the instrument speak a little more in this one.....the consistency of the guitar effects creates an original sounding bluesy record, with the aforementioned pop sensibilities making it a very easy, nice listen, although seemingly an afterthought in the creation of this album

Tweedy's voice is also more of an instrument than ever in this one, emotive, almost ready to crack in several songs......YHF is a tough act to follow, even moreso since YHF followed Summer Teeth, but this album has a niche of its own, its sincerity, it's emotion, it's stretched guitar workouts, and still all there for a reason; time will tell where it lands among the three
Title: Wilco
Post by: tpfkabi on June 23, 2004, 10:07:48 PM
i've had a burned copy for a while, but i finally listened to the real deal all the way through today at work........it is a great album.......i don't think it's as cohesive as any of their other albums.......i imagine it will get some bad reviews just because reviewers will be taken back by a 10 min + song as track 3 and then a 15 min song later.......i think if they recorded Spiders like it was live, the album would get better praise......buttttt, i think they probably did it Neu! style because they had lived with it for so long.......so why not deconstruct it?.....it is THEIR song after all............when i listened before, i skipped Hell is Chrome, thinking it was Wilco on cruise control, but for some reason it's the one i want to listen to most right now.

is the studio version of Kicking Television online anywhere?

1.]at least thats what you said-i love the typical start a song slow then crank it up..and jam.the 2:00 mark is bliss ...........just phucking rock n roll...don there that much anymore.........so its refreshing.......

2.]hell is chrome-this is just a good lazy sing along song ......lyrics are funny in an onomotopeia/metaphorical way.........

3.]spiders <kidsmoke>-love it......the loop is catchy and i like the surprising jam in the middle...

4.]muzzle of bees-

5.]hummingbird- awesome ..reminds me of the beatles white album style..

6.]hanshake drugs-best song title  i have heard in a while....the song itself is great.goog melody.it reminds me of wilco s attempt at remaking lou reeds <im waiting for my man>

7.]wishful thinking-

8.]company on my back-a great standard ditty...

9.]im a wheel- the last three songs are great this is just a fun song.....

10.]theologians-....MY FAVORITE TRACK.......seems like leftover foxtrot....

11.]less than you think-

12.]the late greats-great closer.......humorous......

to me, this album is a quicker study than YHF because this album is not so tightly crafted.....the sounds they're creating may be more strange, but i guess the reason it comes off as an easier listen is because there aren't as many layers to the production...it's more like listening to a concert, as the band members have alluded to

everything about this album feels right, make two brilliant records, go through some hardship with the band, come to terms with addiction, then lay down the next one with a little soul and emotion, a raw and brilliant flexing of their musicianship

'hell is chrome,' 'hummingbird,' 'handshake drugs,' 'company in my back,' and 'i'm a wheel' are all fucking great. and somehow jeff tweedy manages to come up with better lyrics with each cd. except i think 'i am trying to break your heart' best lyrics of all time. has anyone heard his cd with jim o' rourke called 'loose fur'? its really great as well. it seems like the perfect transition between yankee hotel foxtrot and a ghost is born.

Hmm I gave this band a try, I don't dig it. The guitar parts, particularly the 'solos' are so sloppy and random, not good music in my book. There are some songs with a bass/drum beat repeating for minutes on end. And it's too quiet, where's the energy? Quiet music can still have energy. The album I'm referring to, btw, is A Ghost is Born

thats because your working backwards.  AGIB is probably the hardest album to 'get into'.  you should start with Being There and work forward.  (particularly SummerTeeth and Yankee Hotel Foxtrot).  you can see the band as its much more conventional beginnings get progressively weirder and more experimental.  the new album doesnt really sound like anything before it although it does have a handful of great songs.  i would liken it to someone picking up the latest radiohead without hearing how they got there.  you may like it, but if you dont you should try listening to earlier stuff and working your way there.

AGIB is their second best, but you can't listen to it first.

Once you're into them, though, you'll wish you had never publicly dogged the solos... the first track on AGIB is one of the most passionate solos ever recorded in the history of music.  It blows me away that something so sloppy could be so amazing and full of feeling.

I started with AM, but I didn't get into them until Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, so you may want to give that a try.

AGIB is most definitely not the place to start.

this is confirmed?

I listened to A Ghost is Born first and I like it more than Yankee Hotel Fox Trot. Maybe you just have to like their music or not. I'm not a believer in "warming up" to things.

well, i still say you're going at it backwards.  think radiohead.  you're starting at the end, the weird experimentation.  it goes down much easier if you know where they've been.  summerteeth and being there are clues to where theyre going but dont sound ANYTHING like the newer albums.  it also took me more than a year for yhf to become my favorite album over summerteeth.  i got it when it leaked listened to it for a long time, stopped, the album came out and i started listening to it again, saw them live a few times forgot about it, THEN when i dug it out for a few spins i realized i liked it best.

I suggest starting in the middle (Being There or Summerteeth) and then working your way through the other stuff.  I started at Being There and it was still a difficult beginning.  I then got A.M. but haven't really begun to enjoy it until just recently.  Now I see the greatness in each album...I don't really have a set favorite (although Yankee Hotel Foxtrot is probably the masterpiece), I have favorites at different times.  There's so much good stuff there, even on A.M., the album newer Wilco fans (YHF and post-YHF Wilco fans) don't seem to want to get into (I have a number of friends who love Wilco  but won't even pick up A.M.).  Tweedy's songwriting -- lyrics and melodies -- are so good: direct, honest, insightful, poetic, sometimes ironic but always worth hearing.  It's on A.M.; it's on A ghost is born.

To help the process of "getting" or "getting into" Wilco, I would suggest seeing the film I Am Trying to Break Your Heart and making it to a Wilco show if they come around.  I Am Trying... really helped me appreciate Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, and seeing Wilco live a couple of days ago has really given me a new appreciation of A ghost is born.  Sometimes it really does help to hear the songs in a little different context than the album.

I wouldn't suggest The Wilco Book to anyone who wasn't already a fan with a pretty good knowledge and appreciation for Wilco's songs and artistic process.  That said, I really enjoy it.

i am a casual fan and here is my two cents.

i like YHF the most. its the masterpeice. nothings gonna eclipse it.  then i like being there next.  i love the sound of that bitch. its raw and acoustic-like.  far, far away is beautiful.  just really good chilln shit.  then AGIB is next for me.  its good.  really good. but falls short IMO compared to the other two mentioned.  i use to own summeer teeth.  and its kind of cheesy.  and too poppy.  all the songs sound alike.  if you like the rembrants(i'll be there for you song) then you will love summer teeth.

i need to listen to a.m.

summerteeth is my second favorite and holds a special place as it was the album that introduced me to them in 1999.  its only 1/2 poppy.  shes a jar, we're just friends, pieholden suite, how to fight lonliness, via chicago, my darling, and in a future age are all pretty dark and not poppy at all.  (which is literally 7 of 14, half the album).  but, really i think its when the band turned a corner artistically and especially with jeffs lyrics getting more from a storytelling point of view like "i dreamed about killing you again last night and it felt alright to me" - pretty dark stuff.  and it doesnt really sound like any of their other albums so i appreciate the wilcopop of it.  i'm seeing them for the 6th (and maybe 7th) time on wednesday (and maybe thursday) this week.  we'll see what they're like this time.

yeah, you got a point there.  i forgot via chicago(that is really good).
and i didnt mean to be like "oh, if its dark and depressing then its cool/good", "if its poppy then its fake/ghetto"  i hope i dont come off like that.   :?    but i guess i am just venting because after i heard YHF which i thought was brilliant in every way, i got amped up and bought summer teeth and was let down.

Wilco is my favorite band. They have been for the past couple of years. I started with Yankee Hotel....then i saw I am Trying to Break your heart, that Sam Jones documentary. I didn't look any further into their catalog until a friend of mine bought Being There. Now Summerteeth is my favorite...sort of. Its impossible for me to name a favorite, but i don't like A.M. as i'm sure most fans don't. But i just recently saw their show in Oklahoma City and i will be a wilco fan until the day i die. They were incredible. Anyone who's ever said that they're a slow depressing band MUST see them live. Hands down the best concert I've ever been to in my short existence. They rocked the house in every way possible. Spiders(kidsmoke) from a ghost is born was the highlight of the evening while Nels Cline (their latest touring guitar player) stole the show by vamping up every one of the staples and adding some much needed cock to the tracks from A Ghost is Born (Kingpin and the Late Greats were especially surprising) The motherfuckers played THREE Encores, i've been to a lot of shows and unless its panic, cheese, phish, or the dead i don't even expect one encore. I can not wait for this live dvd/cd to come out and i'm going to do everything in my power to see Tweedy and company again ASAP.

PS. I'm so glad Wilco's thread and Sufjan Stevens's thread are at the top of the list, you guys have impeccable tastes in music

Uh, so I just got my introduction to Wilco last week when I bought Summerteeth and Yankee Hotel Foxtrot simultaneously. I think they're both pretty great. I really liked YHF right off the bat. Summerteeth was a little harder for me to get into, which is sort of weird considering it's the poppier of the two. Anyway, I love them both. Next, I think I'm gonna get the newest one, or perhaps Being There.

Loose Fur is a trio comprised of Jeff Tweedy, Glen Kotche and Jim O'Rourke. i don't know how much you know about the band so:
Tweedy - lead singer of Wilco
Kotche - Wilco drummer
O'Rourke - producer of YHF and AGIB

i think another album is in the works.

"jammy"?
it's not like the Grateful Dead or anything.
at least it's not like long solos and stuff like that.
the songs do go on longer than your average Wilco song though.
the 3 songs sung mainly by Tweedy could easily be on the last two Wilco albums i think.
O'Rourke's voice took a little getting used to.

Wilco Reveal Release Date, Tracklist for Live Album
Source: Pitchfork

Last May, Wilco treated local fans to four nights of music at Chicago's Vic Theatre. The mini-series sold out almost immediately, tickets bringing in outrageous amounts of moola on eBay only minutes after they hit the box office. Though this isn't anything new to a band who pulled two Grammys earlier this year and is treated like deities in its hometown, surely the speed of the sales was fueled partially by the fact that the performances would be recorded for future release on both DVD and CD. Who doesn't want to be on TV?
Well, kiddies, your time has come. Redecorate the kitchen with some stainless steel appliances and then fill them with space food, 'cause the future is here! Or sort of, anyway. While we're still in the dark on the DVD, Wilco has announced the November 1 Nonesuch release of Kicking Television - Live in Chicago, a two-disc audio set capturing highlights from those four May evenings. The tracklisting runs through a significant portion of the band's catalog, in addition to a cover of Charles Wright's "Comment". Alas, no Kiss covers, beautiful and stoned, though.

>>Disc one
01 Misunderstood
02 Company In My Back
03 The Late Greats
04 Hell Is Chrome
05 Handshake Drugs
06 I Am Trying To Break Your Heart
07 Shot in the Arm
08 At Least That's What You Said
09 Wishful Thinking
10 Jesus, Etc.
11 I'm the Man Who Loves You
12 Kicking Television

>>Disc two
01 Via Chicago
02 Hummingbird
03 Muzzle of Bees
04 One by One
05 Airline to Heaven
06 Radio Cure
07 Ashes of American Flags
08 Heavy Metal Drummer
09 Poor Places
10 Spiders (Kidsmoke)

In the spirit of the live album, Wilco will be playing a handful of shows this fall, beginning this Sunday with Farm Aid. The band will be joining the likes of Willie Nelson, Neil Young, John Mellencamp and Dave Matthews at that charity event, which benefits farm families affected by Hurricane Katrina. They're also opening for the Rolling Stones in Atlanta, and Jeff Tweedy will be performing a few solo shows in November.

Just saw them thursday in Tulsa...what a great incredible unspeakably awesome display of humanity. During their last set a friend of mine stumbled up and declared with a finger pointing at the Tweed: "There's the Jesus Christ of rock n' roll man!" I saw a 2 year old groovin' on his dad's shoulders and i saw a 60+ year old woman cutting a rug in the middle of the crowd the entire show. Tweedy spoke up during "Kingpin" after he broke a string and declared something that could summed up as "America sucks now like it never has before". Stirrat was sporting a mountain man look and Nels was doing some amazing things with that guitar (if they want to make an album that could surpass Yankee hotel's greatness, they better have Nels on board). They played for close to 3 hours and they included some new material (one song that included lyrics like "I'm a-walking, I'm a-singing" was just fucking incredible and as soon as they post the setlist on Wilcobase i'm gonna know the name). They closed with a woody guthrie song called "Jesus Christ for President" and it blew my mind, the last thing i expected. Via Chicago was particularly moving. And on misunderstood it was pretty cool to hear the huge crowd scream "You still love rock and roll" and see a giant grin pop up on the whole band's face as if they genuinley were surprised. All in all, one of the two best concerts i've ever ever seen (the other being the other Wilco show i saw in april).

Thanks, I had to go to Chicago the day after the show on business and guess what just happened to be across from the hotel where the conference was?
I only had time to take the picture, didn't get a chance to sneak in.

btw... the show was completely amazing.
The opening act was a complete bore, but once Wilco came on, it was pure magic.

The first handfull of songs are kind of a blur because I was so amazed that I was seeing Wilco again.  I was pretty close, but not so close that it hurt... it was about ten of us there and we were all really excited and we were able to find a spot all together so we could predict next songs, etc...

I had told myself that I wouldn't take a moment to piss until after either Jesus Etc... or At Least That's What You Said and about five songs or so in, they played ALTWYS so afterwards, I went to the porta (during War on War since that's not my favorite) and while I was headed back, they started Jesus Etc... which sucked because that's like one of my wife's and my songs, but after that the whole concert clicked like no other.  I was so into every single song... even the ones that I don't normally enjoy as much.  I wasn't disapointed with any of the songs they played as long as they just kept playing... and they did for quite some time.

anyway, great concert.

"The Lonley 1" is the greatest song...but so is every song from that album. If Wilco keeps the live incarnation that they have now...then this new album will fucking rule, lately they've been playing a couple of songs, "Walken" and "On and On and On" at their live shows so, if either of those end up on the new lp...or the rest of the album sounds anything remotely like that...its going to be Yankee Hotel/summerteeth great!

I just got back from seeing Wilco in Nashville and hot damn, Wilco is a fucking good band. Logan said something about them seeming kind of bad or boring live on that I Am Trying to Break Your Heart documentary, and that's true. But that's almost a completely different band. It's still the core three guys (Jeff Tweedy, Glen Kotch, John Bass Player) but they've also added a new keyboard player, another guy who plays keyboard and guitar, and Nels Cline. Nels Cline is the coolest guitar player I have ever seen in my life ever and holy shit he was so awesome omg. Jeff Tweedy's actually really good at the guitar too! There were about three new songs played and I'm really excited about this new album, because all three songs were great. Especially Walken. It's not like, a big step forward or anything, but it's a really fun, groovin' rock song.

Highlights!

- Jeff Tweedy's guitar solo on Hell is Chrome.
- At Least That's What You Said and Sunken Treasure puttin' tears in this old bear's eyes!
- Spiders was so fucking perfect. I love that it's such an unruly sounding song and there's just weird, crazy stuff going on all over the place, but the changes were all done perfectly and were really rockin'.
- During the little call and response breakdown of Kingpin, Jeff stopped to explain to us what to do and exactly why we were doing it. When he would say, "How can I?" we were to respond by screaming. He explained that we were screaming to cleanse our bodies of bile or something or other. It was a ridiculous reason but I sure did have a good time hollerin'.
- For the last encore (of three), Jeff Tweedy came to the front of the stage and sang Acuff Rose (an Uncle Tupelo song) acoustic and without the mic, so of course everyone was as quiet as possible and it was perfect and I love The Tweed.

It's tough for me to say that this show was better than the Devendra Banhart show I saw a few months back, but I think it was. The Devendra show was incredibly intimate, but god damn. Fuckin' Wilco. So as of right now my top three shows ever are:

1. Wilco, Ryman Auditorium in Nashvile, 3-17-06
2. Devendra Banhart, Exit-In in Nashville, October of 2005.
3. Ryan Adams, Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, November of 2004.

Here's a setlist I nabbed from viachicago.org that looks about right:

Sunken Treasure
Mountain Bed
Airline To Heaven
At My Window Sad and Lonely
Forget The Flowers
When the Roses Bloom Again
California Stars
Muzzle of Bees
Hell is Chrome
Spiders
Jesus Etc
Walken
Handshake Drugs
I am Trying to Break Your Heart
Shot in the Arm
At Least That's What You Said
Late Greats

Encore 1
Hummingbird
Either Way (new song)
Theologians
I'm the Man Who Loves You
Kingpin

Encore 2
Passenger Side
War on War

Encore 3
Acuff Rose - Jeff acoustic unplugged

I saw Wilco last night and it was amazing.  The biggest highlight was definitely ALTWYS, Hummingbird was also really good.

The Early Day Miners opened, and they were really good (though I wouldn't associate Wilco with them, whatever).  The real downside of the evening was that this guy in the audience screamed "Tigers 3, Yankees 0" between songs.  I was annoyed, but I dealt with it since it was between songs.  Later that night, during a slower song that I hadn't heard before and was getting into, the guy screamed "Tigers 5, Yankees 0!"

I was sufficiently pissed.

we skipped Sunken Treasure...

i don't understand why people go to Tweedy's solo shows and shout like that. my friend went to the Nashville show not too long ago and it was ruined by some guy shouting things over and over.

my first listen through on the way home - i felt disappointed.

next day to now - i love it.

as an 11 song album minus Leave Me* i think it'd be perfect.

Shake it Off DVD is great as well.

favorite bits on the album right now:

-glenn's cowbell hits during Shake it Off
-the repeating one note guitar towards the end of Walken

*not bad, but it feels like an AM era b-side.

So, a year ago if you asked me what I thought of Wilco, I would tell you "I don't get it" and would go on about how Jeff Tweedys voice is one of the worst I have ever heard.

1 year later they are my favorite band and Jeff Tweedy is my favorite songwriter, and currently has my favorite voice in music.

What is it about Tweedy's voice? I mean, it's not good, but it's fucking great. It's raspy and at times hurts your ears, but it sounds so fucking good.

Jeff Tweedy's voice is a paradox.

Anyways, Sky Blue Sky has about 4 AMAZING songs and the rest I can't even remember. If any other band released Sky Blue Sky, it would make top 5 lists and most top 1's of the year, but since it's Wilco, it doesn't even crack most top 20's.

It's got alot of great songs, and some forgettable ones. Isn't that 99% of music anyways?

I am writing a paper on tweedy, and I've checked a few search engines trying tons of different variations...anyone know any good cites that have bio info, or maybe a site that's all wilco info?

I need pretty much whatever i can get, the paper in strictly informative

I'm sure this is frowned upon here, but any suggestions?

yeah i'd say that's the best source for wilco info from tweedy's youth to uncle tupelo to a ghost is born. its a quick read and it goes great with jim derogotis's "staring into sound" flaming lips book.

just glancing through it i've formed a larger outline...thanks, any helpful websites, like imdb style that would do such a thing for music?

wilcobase.com has a list of every show they've played. I'm sure if you're looking for their recordings they would'nt be too hard to find on any torrent site.

any thoughts on the new DVD?

i don't have it yet.

i tend not to go back to live documents audio or video like i do studio albums, but audio even less.

the Jeff Tweedy DVD was nice though and I Am Trying to Sue* Your Heart.

I get it, too.

I got the new DVD yesterday. It's pretty decent. I don't imagine I will watch it a lot, but it is still very well done. Very similar to the Tweedy DVD and, just like that DVD, you can download MP3s of all the songs perform... which, along with the film,  totally makes it worth the purchase.

I've listened to (The Album) a few times now.
I think I really dig the first half or so, but don't care too much for Country Disappeared or Sonny Feeling.
It's really nice hearing Tweedy's voice doubletracked on Solitaire and Bull Black Nova is amazing.

^^

Black Bull Nova IS amazing.  That was my favorite song when I was listening to that album.

Almost 5 years since anyone has cared.  Wow.

They had a new album a couple years ago that no one seemed to care about (though it was decent), Tweedy had a guest spot on Parks and Recreation, and now he's joined up with his son for a band called Sukierae.  So at least they'll win the award for worst name for a new band in 2014.

I like Wilco when they rock or are experimental, but whenever he does the slower stuff, he tends to put me to sleep.  Which can be good or bad.

This forum has been pretty dead for the past year or so, leaving me to wonder if anyone musics anymore.

I musics every damn day.

Wilco is a band which I overall appreciate but I prefer watching live videos of them. God, I wanna see them live. They have a great lineup currently, especially with Nels Cline who is one of the best guitarists alive right now. I feel like Tweedy should step back on the albums and let the others contribute more heavily in the writing, you'll probably get something really special out of that.

Fantastic performance here:

But i just recently saw their show in Oklahoma City and i will be a wilco fan until the day i die. They were incredible. Anyone who's ever said that they're a slow depressing band MUST see them live. Hands down the best concert I've ever been to in my short existence. They rocked the house in every way possible. Spiders(kidsmoke) from a ghost is born was the highlight of the evening while Nels Cline (their latest touring guitar player) stole the show by vamping up every one of the staples and adding some much needed cock to the tracks from A Ghost is Born (Kingpin and the Late Greats were especially surprising)

HA! This was 9 years ago.

Still one of the best shows I've ever seen. (Tom Waits will always be No. 1)

Also, I was a giant tool in 2005.
