Us foreigners usually get stupid movie titles.

In Mexico, for example  we got these:

Thelma & Louise - Un Final Inesperado (An Unexpected Ending)
Jerry Maguire - Amor y Desafío  (Love and Challenge)
Top Gun - Entre Penas Y Glorias (Between Sorrow and Glories)
A Few Good Men - Cuestion de Honor (A Matter Of Honor)
Frida - Matices de una Pasion (Hues of a Passion)
Adaptation - Ladron de Orquideas (The Orchid Thief)
28 Days Later - Exterminio (Extermination)
Rush Hour - Una Pareja Explosiva (An Explosive Couple)
Heat - Fuego Contra Fuego (Fire Against Fire)
Pearl Harbor- Entre El Fuego y La Pasion (Between Fire And Passion)
Full Metal Jacket- Cara de Guerra (War Face)
The Nightmare Before Christmas -  El Extraño Mundo de Jack (Jack's Strange World)

Metro - El Negociador (The Negociator)  , which was fun, because when  The Negociator came out (bout two or three years later) they had to call it  El Mediador "The Mediator"

it'd seem that people here wouldn't know what biopics are about if they just had the name of the person at the title, therefore  we need an explanaiton at the title, too.

And in France,  Bringing Down The House is called "From Bronx to Bel-Air"
context, context, context.

El Duderino

when i went back home to france in november, "Kill Bill" was "Murder William" but i only saw the poster once.
Did I just get cock-blocked by Bob Saget?

Bwahahaha!  DAHAHAHAHA!!!

These are very entertaining.  Keep 'em coming.  Sorry I can't contribute (not a foreigner).  My favorite so far is Thelma & Louise = An Unexpected Ending.

The Orchid Theif one makes more sense though.  A lot of times wordplay doesn't make sense--Adaptation works as biological and social adaptation as well as book adaptation, so they just went with the book title that it was based on.

But most of them made me "lol."

Adaptation - Ladron de Orquideas (The Orchid Thief)
Full Metal Jacket- Cara de Guerra (War Face)

..............i think that these would be better than the US titles..........

cron

regardless,   don't you think it's a little unfair against the author/artist/director  that made the film?

baptising a movie musn't be easy, and watching how a  title gets (most of the times) butchered must be  tough.

I JUST remembered:

Mulholland Dr. - Sueños, Misterios y Secretos (Dreams, Misteries and Secrets)
context, context, context.

rustinglass

Shit, I've got tons.

Full metal Jacket- Nascido para matar (Born to Kill)
Brave heart - O destino do guerreiro (destiny of the warrior)
Heat - Cidade sob pressão (city under pressure)
Breaking the waves - Ondas de paixão (waves of passion)
romancing the stone- em busca da esmeralda perdida (searching for the lost emerald)
toy story- os rivais (the rivals)
eraserhead - no céu tudo é perfeito (in heaven everything is fine)
a few good men and the nightmare before christmas are the same as the spanish.
lost in translation- O amor é um lugar estranho (love is a strange place)... i guess it lost something in the translation.
My favourite:
Beverly Hills Cop - Caça polícias ; now this is a wierd one: you take the term "busters" in the sense of "ghostbusters" and make "copbusters".
"In Serbia a lot of people hate me because they want to westernise, not understanding that the western world is bipolar, with very good things and very bad things. Since they don't have experience of the west, they even believe that western shit is pie."
-Emir Kusturica

cine

Oh I thought this was for the band, Foreigner. My bad.

Bruce Lee

(us)The Rundown - (uk) Welcome to the Jungle
(us)Return of the Dragon - (real title) Way of the Dragon
(us)Chinese Connection - (real title) Fist of Fury
(us)Fist of Fury - (real title) Big Boss

pete

die hard - an ultimate cop
the rock - the ultimate mission

and in taiwan every arnold movie has the word "devil" in it, because he was known as "the devil" arnold (some kinda reference to his body?) so,
the terminator - the devil terminator
total recall - the devil total recall
kindergarten cop - the devil king of kids
"Tragedy is a close-up; comedy, a long shot."
- Buster Keaton

ElPandaRoyal

The Royal Tenenbaums - Uma Comédia Genial (A genius comedy)
Rushmore - Gostam Todos da Mesma (Everyone Likes the Same  :? you don't get it? Neither do I)
Kill Bill - A Vingança (The Revenge)
Requiem For a Dream - A Vida Não é Um Sonho (Life is not a dream)
The Ladykillers - O Quinteto da Morte (The Death Quintet)
....
Si

those are not inadequate.

Actually, I like "Way of the Dragon" more than "Enter the Dragon".

It is more consistent with his philosophy and his system of fighting.

.. way of the intercepting fist ..

sweden:

the producers (det våras för hitler) springtime for hitler
swingers (du, var är brudarna?) dude, where's the babes?
chicken run (flykten från hönsgården) escape from the chicken farm
bowfinger (knubbigt regn) chubby rain
ferris bueller's day off (fira med ferris) celebrate with ferris
reservoir dogs (de hänsynslösa) the ruthless ones
running scared (skjut inte på min kompis) don't shoot at my buddy
jay and silent bob strike back (stjärnor utan hjärnor) stars without brains

Hah, you silly swedes. In Norway, all of the silly sounding ones on that list are the original titles :-D The rest are basically the same as the swedish ones.

Norwegian ones (from memory):

This is Spinal Tap: Hjelp vi er i Rockebransjen/ Help, we're in the rock industry

Also, all of the "...Vacation" movies with Chevvy Chase are called "Hjelp vi er på ...ferie"/ "Help we're on ...vacation"

Believe me, there are tons of early eighties comedies with the "Help...something" title.

Raiders of the lost ark: Jakten på den forsvunne skatten/ The hunt for the lost treasure

Jaws: Haisommer/ Sharksummer

Treamors: Marksommer/ Wormsummer

Once upon a time in the West: Ondt blond i Vesten/ Evil blood in the West

Same with OUAT in America.

Die Hard: Aksjon Skyskraper/ Operation Skyscraper

Alien: Den Åttende Passasjer/ The eight passenger

These last two, along with many others have with recent video releases and TV showings had their original titles intact. Also notice how they are practically all eighties movies. We don't really have a huge problem with badly translated titles now a'days.
