Has he ever played Metal Gear Solid? Or any video game for that matter? And how's the adaptation going?

Amazing! Best PTA press tour ever?

Surely we need to ask him how to pronounce Xixax?

This is the most aggressive PTA tour ever. Can we assume;

1. He really, really needs a hit, and the studio realizes beyond DDL, he is the draw here?
2. He's really proud of this one.
3. He needs the money?

It seems like a mix of all three, but it also seems like he's been more outgoing and public the last few years. Even beyond press tours for his own films, the many, many music videos he's made along with the DGA Q&A's for other directors films point to a much different attitude than from the PDL/TWBB days.

Maybe the subject matter of the film got to him, too.

You should have seen the amount of press he did for Boogie and Magnolia.

In all fairness the man has 4 kids to feed.  I'm just happy he is coming out of the woodwork.  Life is better when we hear his voice.  The xixax community is a happier place when he shows his face.

How many hours is it left til this? So it's 15:00 ET tomorrow? // Swedish noob.

Someone posted that link on Reddit and it seems to work just fine:
https://timee.io/20180116T2000?tl=PTA%20scheduled%20to%20do%20an%20AMA%20on%20Reddit,%20Tuesday,%20January%2016th,%202018,%2012pm%20PT

It's 9 p.m. today in Central Europe i guess.

I have lots of questions but judging from the interviews there are slim chances he would answer them directly without being elusive. I know there will be hundreds of questions so chances are slim anyway but still struggling with what kind of questions I should try with. Anyway, I hope people will come up with some good ones and he will be willing to answer them so we will get something different.

I like this: "[DDL and I] wrote a lot of it in Ireland as a matter of fact! Just the two of us sitting at the Kitchen Table. Long walks and naps and lots of daydreaming. A great memory to have with me when I think of making this film."

Placing all of this here for easier reference, partly out of boredom. Also, people sometimes delete their questions later on, which can make the context a bit uncertain.

PTA's AMA:

Hi Paul! Do you have a go-to "comfort" movie?
The Birdcage! or anything by Steven Spielberg.

Hey Paul, big fan!
1. Actor/actress you want to work with, but haven't yet?
2. Which of your own movies are you the most proud of?
3. Favorite Stanley Kubrick movie?

1. Tiffany Haddish
2. The Master 3.DrStrangeloveLolitaFullMetalJackTheShining - all one word

What's your favorite memory of David Foster Wallace?
He turned me onto Don DeLillo. And he looked at us like we were all failing him....sweetly.

Hi Paul!
What was the main lesson you took away serving as your own (collaborative) DP on Phantom Thread? Will you continue to shoot your own movies in the future?

My main takeaway was hire extreme proffesionals to surround you and point like you have a lot of confidence and know what you're doing. Would I do it again? I think I might.....but I also wanna work with Chivo, Bob Richardson...tons of others...

we all know you love some goood screenplays--- who are some of your favorite AUTHORS (short stories, poetry, novels...)??
Chester Himes! Thomas Pynchon (obviosuly) john o'hara..John Steinbeck...George Orwell....Shirley Jackson! Caroline Blackwood

Paul!
Huge huge fan. Thank you for doing this. Saw Phantom Thread last night, listening to the soundtrack as I type this (holy shit Jonny), astounding stuff. I have a few questions:
1) How much of yourself do you see in Reynolds Woodcock? I was troubled by how much I identified with him by the end of the film.
2) Are you currently working on (or are there any plans to begin work on) any new editions with The Criterion Collection? I want to buy them all.
3) We're you at LAX the week of May 22nd of last year wearing a SF Giants cap? If so I'm sorry for staring, I wanted to come say hello but I could've sworn you were a Dodgers/Angels fan.
Thanks again for doing this, and for all of your work.

1) I see lots and a not much. I'm not as fussy but I do like to be in charge 2) No Criterion plans. would be nice to do another one... 3) I wouldn't be caught dead in a SF Giants hat. I bleed blue.

Hi Paul!
You wrote a draft for a RDJ-led Pinocchio movie. Have you written or doctored any other scripts in between your directorial projects?

We talked about doing it - and still might - it's a great idea but very hard to get right. I'm an RDJ fanatic. Here's hoping.... I don't have much that I haven't filmed already....one or two things....(that should probably stay hidden in a drawer...)

There's a song credit at the end of Phantom Thread for a Jonny Greenwood piece called "Puck Beaverton's Tattoo" (obvious reference to Inherent Vice) that doesn't appear on the release of either OST.
Any story here? Just a left-over piece from IV?

Well, yes.....good spotting....it's an Adaption of an old cue....Jonny took it and played it with an orchestra - instead of his computer....we fleshed it out and made it sound spooky ....

Hi Paul, proud three time owner of TWBB here.
Early last year I spoke to a crew member on the set of Phantom Thread and essentially begged them for a job as a runner.
It didn't lead to anything unfortunately, but it did motivate me to go and make my own short film that I'm now about to put out into the world.
My question is, when you were first starting out how did you go about breaking into an industry that is seemingly closed off to outsiders? Is there a way you think would still work in today's age for getting noticed? (One better than walking onto one of your sets).
Stoked to see PT!

It seems to be that the most sought after position in Hollywood with the least amount of competition is...writing....writing is the best job if you can get it....people are hungry for scripts...keep writing. Writing, writing, writing....

What was it like making Junun? Did you like the digital filmmaking process and making a documentary for the first time?
It was so much fun. I loved working with my little Blackmagic camera and filming people pay music...it was stress free and inspiring...more of a home movie than a documentary. I"m so happy you saw it - wish everyone would see it. I'm really proud of that film.

If you could go back, what's one thing you'd tell yourself while making Magnolia?
Chill The Fuck Out and Cut Twenty Minutes

What made you switch between anamorphic lenses on your earlier films, and the spherical lenses on the later films?
Nerd Questions! My Favorite! Well, the first time we shot spherical was on the Master...it seemed like a good fit, evoking the old 50s films like Vertigo and North By Northwest...large format films but in a boxy frame....it was a nice change from the earlier films....I wanna shoot scope again though...maybe next time..

Did Daniel Plainview ever truly love H.W or was it always just a facade?
For sure he loved him. for sure, for sure. don't you think? He just didn't know what to do when HW grew into his own man....

What are some 2017 movies that stood out to you?
Call Me By Your Name. City Of Ghosts. Wonder Woman. The Post. Lost City of Z. Star Wars. Baby Driver. I'm missing some and haven't seen a lot....I"m still catching up....

Hi, Paul! I wanted to ask you about romantic love in films. How do you show relationships in movies and people falling in love without going into cliched elements like montages? How do you portray love and how is it influenced by other artists?
Thanks in advance, I'm looking forward to seeing Phantom Thread when it premieres in Colombia.

I think Hitchcock had a good idea - he said shoot Love scenes like Murder Scenes and Murder Scenes like Love Scenes..maybe he felt that falling love was scary as shit.....? I think we've all felt that way sometime...

You have expressed interest in working with Tiffany Haddish. Any specific plans in mind?
Thinking.....thinking...thinking....

When you're writing scripts on MS Word do you use the screenplay template or do you write out the characters names every single time?
P.S. That scene in the Master when Freddie rides off in the desert is hilarious.

HA! I write their damn names out every time! Feels good.

Why don't you participate more in the blu-ray releases for your film? Why is Boogie Nights the only movie you ever did a commentary for?
I'm lazy and the sound of my own voice makes me ill....
But I recorded a 5 minute commentary for the Phantom Thread disc!

What was Thomas Pynchon like when you met him (if he's actually real)?
Who?

Hey Paul, Phantom Thread was a Beautiful film. I was lucky enough to see a 70mm screening of it.
1) why did you choose to shoot in 35mm and then blow it up to 70mm?
2) Jonny Greenwood's score gorgeous, maybe his best yet. I noticed that there are 1-2 pieces of non-original music that you used in the film: some oscar peterson and debussy's string quartet. Those pieces blended in really well, to the point where if i didn't know jazz and classical i wouldnt have noticed that they weren't Jonny's music. Was this intentional? did you pick the Debussy quartet? i was really excited to hear it pop up!
3) I love those "Thom, Jonny and a Cr78" videos that you made with radiohead. What was their reason for making those? What was the process like? How much work did thom and jonny do to prepare those new musical arrangements?

1) We didn't want to shoot 70 in the first place - not the right feel for this one. Blowing up to 70 gives you a really nice grain structure and a sturdy print - and there are lots of great places to play those prints now thanks to the master, hateful 8, dunkirk - it's the new 35! 2) thanks for that compliment.....yes, it's nice that they sit side by side together well - that was the idea - but also to have a little break here and there from jonny's score was good too - i picked debussy...it's a good one 3) those are my favs! great memory of filming in my backyard when they came through town on tour - just a couple cameras, a couple takes as the sun went down - the real reason was for posterity - and fun - maybe we should do some more....

Where can you get the best sandwich in LA?
Wallys!

Hiya PTA! You're known to be one of the premier directors working in the industry today that balances Hollywood-esque appeal and art house sensibilities. Would you ever consider leaning more towards traditional art films or do you feel at home in the position you're in now? Thanks!
Traditional art films? You mean, like, weirder than they already are? I wouldn't mind doing that.....but I can never tell....sometimes I think we've made a blockbuster and other people say, "no this is the weirdest one..." oh well.

Do you ever watch your old movies if they come on TV?
usually for a split second ...and then....switch....

Hey Paul!
How did you and Jonny Greenwood first meet and decide to collaborate? You're both geniuses at what you do and this ongoing collaboration is an absolute treasure.
Big fan of your work, keep it up.
PS. Favorite Radiohead album?

Favorite Radiohead album...........ugh...i Hate this game. today....In Rainbows....tomorrow....something else...KId A perhaps?

Hi Paul!
You once said Magnolia is the best film you will ever make. Do you feel you have since topped yourself? If not, will you?

Junun is better!

Are there any plans for Hard Eight Blu-ray release?
No. That would be great wouldn't it? I'm working on it - have to find some elements hidden deep in the basement....it'll happen, just need some time to dig it all out....

Hey PTA.
When I think of dialog, it sounds good in my head. But when I put it on paper it becomes garbage. How would you solve this problem?

hmmmmmm. good question. what's it sound like when you say it out loud? it doesn't need to look good on the paper if it's a script....a novel maybe, but a script is just a temporary thing....good for the actors, not for reading....

I have always enjoyed the "Transportation" Documentary you made on the set of Sworn To Vengeance as a PA. Who was behind the camera doing all of the filming? A number of internet sleuths think it is John C. Reilly, but I didn't see him listed on the credits. Also, are there experiences and lessons you remember from being a PA and working on sets that impact how you make films today?
Phantom Thread comes out in my town this week, and I can't wait to see it. I'm a huge fan of your films, thanks for all the years of great movies.

A HA AHA AH! Yes, that was filmed by a guy named Devon who worked on the crew with me....I hadn't met John C Reilly at that point....

I love you Paul. Have you ever heard about Lisbon & Sintra Film Festival in Portugal? Would you consider visiting Portugal in the near future?
I love Portugal was there a few years ago.
was in Porto many years ago and loved it. ever heard of the festival - but it sounds nice - i'll bring my bathing suit.

Have you reconciled with David Fincher and Kevin Smith?
We're all good.

Hi Mr. Anderson! I'm the manager of a non-profit art house theatre in Princeton and we would love to have you visit us during a screening of Phantom Thread (or any film you'd like!) if you're ever in the area.
Additionally, what has been your favorite movie-going experience in a cinema?

Don't get out too much but thanks for the offer.
My fav movie going experience? ARGH. Um......... Raiders of the Lost Arc at the La Reina Theater. 1980. Friday Afternoon. Opening Day.

Hey Paul, You're a huge music fan and it shows through your films, so I'm curious what the record was that meant the most to you in your teenage years?
I loved listening to John Williams music as a teenager. (nerd) I loved Oingo Boingo, X, The Specials, The Motels -- all the great new wave stuff here on KROQ in Los Angeles.

Exactly how close did you get to filming Freddie decapitating Master?
Deep Cut Question! I forgot about that.
We didn't get very close at all. Ditched that idea in pre production.

Hi Paul. You've worked with a lot of the same people since your early 20s (Bridges, Elswit, Tichenor, Sellar etc). Did you pick these people very carefully out of admiration for their work, or was it more coincidental? Especially with Elswit - did you immediately know this was your guy?
Elswit was the only one who had a resume. The rest of us all found each other and started getting to work - big dreams and all...
Elswit was nice enough to work with me and teach me everything. He was and is my hero.

Paul Thomas Anderson, the only God I believe in. Do you have any advice for a near broke 18 year old filmmaker?
Get a job? Make some money? Get a haircut?

What is your favorite cinema and why is it the Castro Theater in SF? (Norcal represent!)
I"m kinda partial to the Aero. So Cal represent. Against all my better judgement I like the Castro....because I love San Francisco..but hate the Giants. I"m sorry, but that's just the way it is....

hello paul! huge fan. who is your fav female director?
Kasi Lemmons! Kathryn Bigelow.

Who is the Master? Is it Freddie or Lancaster?
Peggy!

Hello Paul! So excited to read your responses to these great questions.
1) What do you think the filmmaking industry will look like in 50 years? Do you care?
2) What's your favorite film from the silent era?

Lemme get my crystal ball........
it says, we'll all be watching movies in Movie Theaters...on film....weird.
2) Sunrise!

What was the first concert that you ever attended? Bouncing off of that, what's the BEST concert that you've attended? I'd love to know since music is such a key element in your films.
I tased along with my older sister and went to an Adam Ant concert. Gulp. Yep.
I'd say Radiohead at the Greek Theater. many years ago. 2000? Kid A time.

Werner Herzog says you can't be a great filmmaker if you don't read, read, read. Any books currently sitting on your nightstand?
The stack next to my bed is embarrassingly High. the one on my desk right now is "3 Ingredient Cocktails" by Robert Simonson. Great Read!

Have you ever had a milkshake with Daniel Day-Lewis? If so, did he try to drink yours?
He'd drink mine for sure.

What made you choose Brahm's Violin Concerto in There Will Be Blood?
It's fucking rad! And sounds great played loud.

How much of a role does the person who chooses the music/sounds/songs that are in your movies play? How much final say do they get? Also, what are these people called?
I think it's the Director's Job to pick the music. Dylan, the editor i work with has a strong say and veto power....JOnny gets a vote too.

Paul, I've always loved your story about leaving film school and the films you've made since then, so I have three tough questions for you:
Was Phantom Thread primarily inspired by your marriage?
Would you ever consider making a television series?
What does a PTA story need to have?

1) Inspired by my marriage? Not really. But kind of sort of....we're not that weird.
2) Yes, television. sounds good. but....I like makin' movies more i think.
3) What does it need? hmmmmm. Characters. good venue. and some tasty tunes by Jonny G?

If you could raise one actor from the dead to work with, who would it be?
Oh ! Oh ! Humphrey. Cary Grant. Ida Lupino. Joan Fontaine. Charles Laughton. Myrna Loy. Carole Lombard. James Mason!!!!!!! We don't have enough time to play this game. Jason Robards!

Thoughts on "Lady Bird"? Maybe cast Greta Gerwig in your next film?
I haven't seen it yet - but it's next in the que. Greta I love! Greta Greta ! she's amazing.

Hi, have you ever been to Ireland, did Daniel invite you when you were working on Phantom Thread?
Great question! We wrote a lot of it in Ireland as a matter of fact! Just the two of us sitting at the Kitchen Table. Long walks and naps and lots of daydreaming. A great memory to have with me when I think of making this film.

What's your favorite Altman film???
Nashville!

How often does Maya make you fall over laughing?
every day

Why is Tarantino such a hack?
Well, he's no "Bad Pussy Slayer," I like your films so much better...

Favorite David Lynch movie?
Blue Velvet Wild At Heart

What is your favorite DDL performance? (other than TWBB and Phantom Thread)
Bill The Butcher!

Any advice for the lazy aspiring writer?
keep sleeping.....then get off the couch.

I love the way he randomly capitalizes certain words and phrases...

"Movie Theater"
"Director's Job"
"Kitchen Table"

I recall him doing the same thing in his scripts for emphasis, especially in dialogue.

But he seems to care and be proud of Junun more than one may think. Wrote that he is glad the person asking about Junun had seen it. In one of the recent podcasts he said something about "nobody seeing it" with regret in his voice, sort of.

Some nice answers, not very revealing. Great to see he has done commentary for Phantom Thread. Would love to get some extras on bluray. Name dropping Chivo and Richardson was unexpected for me. His possible collaboration with especially the former sounds amazing. Also, glad to know he is most proud of my personal fav - The Master.

Agreed - just saw it again on 35 (at Metrograph), and though I've seen it a million times by now and can recite it word for word, I had a totally unexpected gushingly emotional reaction to it, the likes of which I haven't experienced in years. Magnolia is such an integral part of who I am, it's impossible to be objective about its alleged "flaws". It all counts in adding up to me. I wouldn't change a frame.

Imagine being so fucking cool that Magnolia is the thing that embarrasses you?

I think one of the best bits of news to come out of this thing is the revelation that Pinocchio might still happen. I love that Robert Downey Jr. is so passionate about this project -- there's just something great and surprising about focusing on Pinocchio of all things, even amid the other remakes of The Lion King and The Jungle Book and whatever.

At one point, Anderson was reportedly the director and writer, and then, suddenly, Ron Howard became the director? Given PTA's comments, I wonder what's currently going on. Perhaps there's still a chance for him to helm the project after his next movie, at which point RDJ may be done with his Marvel movies, especially if they end up giving his Iron Man character a heroic end or something.

Me too. Saw it last year at Lincoln Center uptown as part of a Steadicam series (with Boogie Nights) and theatre was maybe a third full?
Went to the 8:30 Tuesday night Magnolia screening as part of a PTA series at Metrograph and it was sold out! I couldn't believe it. (And they're showing it a handful of times.) I was also shocked that the audience was like almost entirely super-young 20s film nerds (and Tavi Gevinson). I've never felt so old.

I definitely see the film's flaws now but it'll never not be one of the most important (if not the) movies of my life because it showed me that movies could do anything.

Don't think PTA is really ashamed of it per se, but probably feels like it's so nakedly personal for him that it feels like looking at an old yearbook photo or something. Still can't believe he was only 29.

This right here. It remains his most personal and ballsy movie. I'm sure he pivots from "I can't believe I did that" to "I'm so happy I did that.""

I'm surprised The Master is the film he's most proud of.

I guess that ashamed is too big a word here. To be honest I haven't seen it in at least a year or so. While there are no bad parts I think it can still be trimmed. Well, if he believes it's too long (which he said before several times), it's too long!;) The paradox is that while I am never bored with his films and never want them to end, I sometimes start to wonder if they are too long while watching them. Even The Master which is probably my all time favorite. Not so much with Magnolia. Too often with Boogie. But modage may be right - the ashamed aspect may be more about being too personal.

For sure he loved him. for sure, for sure. don't you think? He just didn't know what to do when HW grew into his own man....

I feel like we're burying the lede

I often think it's his very best movie, so it was interesting to read that. Punch-Drunk Love might be even better, though, but I switch back and forth all the time. I've always regarded the movies that came before PDL with admiration, and a lot of enthusiasm in certain respects, but I'm much fonder of the post-PDL work, which really seems like a string of varied masterpieces.

Agreed - just saw it again on 35 (at Metrograph)

I second your "...never felt so old..." comment.  There's a mini-PTA film series this month where I live, too.  Out of curiosity, I scanned the crowd before "Boogie Nights" and "There Will Be Blood" started:  Almost 100% youngsters.  (It was also the case when I saw "Boogie Nights" at a hip, outdoor screening at the Hollywood Cemetery last Summer.)

And I agree that "ashamed" is probably the wrong word.  I think it's arguably his most personal film--and perhaps "embarrassed" is a better word?  Not from a skill standpoint, but more from how much it reveals about who he was and what he was going through at the time.

If PTA were to ever really do a follow-up to one of his own movies, my vote would be for the continuing adventures of Doc Sportello and Sauncho Smilax.

I'm not sure if the tweeted questions are quite as prone to the same kind of disappearances that happen with AMAs, but just in case, here. I don't want to lose the context to some of these great and hilarious answers. I was going to move this over into the other post, but it looks way too long that way.

Just in case it ever vanishes, the "have you ever seen this?" question is in reference to Julianne Moore's appearance on Billy on the Street, in which she acted out some of her dialogue from Magnolia.

Also, am I mistaken or did someone from these forums show PTA their artwork and actually got a response? Congratulations to Rooty Poots.

PTA's Twitter Q&A:

Hi PTA, I was wondering which emerging filmmakers and writers are you digging right now and would recommend others to check out?
Hi Michelle - well I really liked this movie from a director named Alexi Pappas - called Tracktown.   it's good. Lemme think of more...

What is the most promising young filmmaker in Hollywood? @DSChazelle? @BarryJenkins? @JordanPeele?
I think they're past promise and in full blown explosion mode.  I cannot wait to see what they do next.  It's so exciting to have filmmakers to look forward to their next ones....feel like that hasn't happened in a while.

Okay. I've got this script. It's rock solid and no one can direct this thing but me... but I've only ever made short films and can't just do this thing with friends.
What now? How do I convince them I'm their guy?

Sounds like you need a Corner Man. and if you don't have one, you gotta be your own Corner Man.  I'll be your corner man....don't worry about convincing. just get on with it. head down. eyes on the road. good luck

Huge admirer of your work Paul, I know this might be a long shot but could you watch this brief clip of my portrayal of Tennessee Williams (https://twitter.com/RichieCerda/status/953718106370830337)?
Richie - nice one. thanks for that.

Hi PTA! Knowing the facts that Daniel Day-Lewis keep his caracter all the shooting time. Which one has been the more easier to work with? Daniel Plainview or Reynolds Woodcock
Well, I liked being in the wide open spaces with Plainview digging for oil.  Reynolds house was a bit claustrophobic.  I think Plainview would kill me, however, while Reynolds would just stab you with his wicked tongue. Plainview was less fussy, so I say Plainview

Hi Paul! Could you suggest a lens to use with my Blackmagic Pocket cam that'll help give a coarser/grainier image?

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Taylor-Hobson-Cooke-Speed-Panchro-32mm-f-2-ser-II-arriflex-no-rear-element/322882500314?hash=item4b2d4bf6da:g:t0YAAOSwvflZVqdF

You'll need an adapter...this might not be exactly right, but something like it...

Hi, Paul! I wanted to show you the artwork (https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DTxKLg_V4AEivmE.jpg) I made for Phantom Thread! Also, did Punch-Drunk Love really ever have an alien-related storyline and set designs that were taken out of the film?
lovely. thank you for showing me.
no, no aliens in punch drunk...always thought of some of it a sci-fi kinda way though. just the weird aliens landing vibe of the beginning. like emily w. was dropped into his lap from a spaceship.

Will you make more documentaries like Junun,I've seen it many times,it's great
maybe maybe.

Hi Paul! I´m a huge fan of your films! I see that frequently there are slab plates around your characters (https://twitter.com/DiegoR91/status/953681300308807681). Do they have a special/hidden meaning for you or they´re just a set decoration detail? @Phantom_Thread
holy shit, that's cool. looks like we like our plates. never noticed before.

I notice in a lot of your scripts you leave certain scenes open for TBD improv on set (https://twitter.com/jackdignanfilms/status/953593419191889920), like these ones from Inherent Vice. Did any moments in Phantom Thread derive from on-set improvisation, or any that got cut? And will you be releasing the script online?
This happens here and there. a feeling that you need a scene or a moment but not quite sure what it is phantom thread had a few but I'm blanking on what they are. the script should be online somehow, somewhere. not sure about that one. maybe i'll ask focus to put it out

Hi Paul! What was your favorite film you watched this year?
Call Me By Your Name

Hello, PTA.  Hope to see your next film soon.
You were open to discuss the filmmaking process in your early days, but around PUNCH or BLOOD, you became more elusive and let the films speak for you, even now.  What motivated you for that change?

always been happy to discuss my filmmaking for anyone who cares. i just took a few years off between those films - didn't have much to say then i suppose.

Are you a member of the PTA at your children's school?
of course i am. i'm the prez.

was wondering whether
1- Are there any cool movie ideas just hanging around your head at the moment?
2-Did you have any crushes on the set of Boogie Nights???
Please work with John C. Reilly again. Love your work

1) Yes i think so
2) my on set crush on boogie night was john c reilly

What do you think are the best elements to making a great short film?
i have no idea. short films are impossible to make well. make it funny? shorts that are funny are always good. serious ones usually kind of suck

what advice would you give to young, aspiring filmmakers + artists?
go to your desk and write and be quiet. and if that doesn't work lay on the couch and daydream.

How do you take a bus from Torrance to Reseda?
BUSTED.

Loved Phantom Thread, what was it like shooting on film in London Vs. in the US? Do you think the process will evolve as it re-emerges?
I loved having in London and can't wait to go back. great crew. great fun. great tea. nothing but A++++++ from me. i get to go back next week and i'm counting down the days

france is the best country for fashion, art house movies, and romance. and yet, you're not coming here to introduce your art house movie about romance in the fashion world. why do you hate us?
I'll be there January 30th. get the wine and cheese ready, please.

hello paul just wondering why you were carrying around a copy of thirteen reasons why. did you read it & if so what are your thoughts?
OH MY GOD LOOK AT THE HAPPY COUPLE. what the f is this? we look like we're going to kill someone.    i don't know what that is in my pocket. probably the back of a magazine? holy jesus. can we remove  this picture from the world?

Hey Paul! What's your favorite soundtrack moment in a Demme film? Thanku!!
SOMETHING WILD

when is HARD NINE coming out
Memorial Day Weekend

Oh also, what're the odds we'll ever see you direct a full-on horror movie? Asking for most of Film Twitter.
5-1? 3-2?

Hi PTA, thank you for this beautiful movie. Can you have Maya send us a video reviewing the film as Whitney Houston (https://twitter.com/tarynbrooks/status/953725224725303296)?
that's funny

In There Will Be Blood, are Paul and Eli Sunday definitely two different people? Some people have said they might not be! Such a great movie
two different people.  looks like twins to me, too.

PHANTOM THREAD is so closely aligned with REBECCA that the two films are almost in dialogue. It goes beyond merely influential. How would you describe that relationship?
Incestuous.    Kissing Cousins.       Rebecca is that great grandmother in the picture that you never met that looks just like you but isn't you.

What is your favourite Robert Altman movie? (A difficult question, I know)
Nashville

What was the last project you coloured photochemically? Would you think about doing it again?
Have never NOT done it this way. As long as they're making the chemicals, i'll be using 'em.

will you work with adam sandler again please
yes, sir, my pleasure.

what is your favorite Charles Bronson film of the '80s?
errr....death wish? I don't know. never saw one of 'em to be honest. i liked him in Great Escape and Once Upon a Time in the west and indian runner

Do you watch this (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7EMZ2HdYMbs) every year on your birthday?
that's funny and cringy i can't watch that . o lord. hilarious.

When is Boogie Nights 2: Electric Boogie-loo coming out?
Memorial Day Weekend

Hi PTA! What are some movies you wish you had the chance to see for the first time in theaters?
P.S. I got to see Phantom Thread in 70mm at the Music Box Theatre in Chicago and it was an amazing moviegoing experience. It made me so happy and inspired, thank you!

Great question. North By Northwest. I heard it opened at Radio city Music hall. also the godfather at radio city.  wish i'd seen 2001 when it came out. wish i could have gone to A Place in The Sun opening day. i love this game.

If you'd wish you had directed the first 40-min of 'Saving Private Ryan', why in hell aren't you writing a 140-min war epic we can all be excited about?
Cause i'm fucking around on twitter.    you're right, emilio.

What do you think about Twin Peaks: The Return?
halfway through it. amazing.  some of it is hard to watch at night

What's your favorite Brian de Palma film?
The Untouchables.

my friend won't watch Magnolia because it's too long what do I do. Also, Magnolia might be the greatest film ever made.
Just tell her/him that it's 90 minutes long. just lie. if it's too late for that, I'd suggest watching Nashville. it's only 89 minutes long

Is there anything you practice outside of filmmaking/writing etc? And why is it creating the illest rap beats?
I need some hobbies.

do you have any plans to work with Joaquin again in the future?
Always.

What would you have cut from Magnolia?
nothing, i just like whining about it. it's great.

Do you buy into the concept of "Prestige TV"
is that a thing? that words makes me paranoid. i'm not really into prestige anything. Unless it's Prestige Worldwide.

You're a champion of physical film (and it shows on screen!), but are there any filmmakers you think use digital particularly well?
Fincher. Soderbergh. Chivo.

Hi Paul, what are your feelings on broccoli?
I pretend to like it more than i do.

One major thing the universe is missing out on is a 'Saturday Night Live: Best of Maya Rudolph' compilation DVD...if you could ever put this together (hint hint) what sketches/characters would make the cut?
This is some bullshit. they don't have that? Whitney. National Anthem.Charo.

Will you make another comedy again?

Lewton, who is a literal angel, updated his post to include the tweets that came after his initial post.

my Call Me By Your Name situation is unique to me. at first i thought i should see it, then before i saw it i was convinced i wouldn't like it, and i found all the reasons i wouldn't like it. but it's been building itself back up for me, owing to being praised by Lowery, then i learned of Sayombhu Mukdeeprom, then i learned of André Aciman, and now PT keeps praising it. so i'm fighting against my natural impulses before engaging with the movie, which i haven't done before. fighting my impulses is rather new to me in general.

Hilarious, yeah.

I liked how he went along with those Parent-Teacher Association jokes, too.

There's also something vaguely funny about "looks like we like our plates." That was a good question.

I can't decide if his response to the "Get Low" question was earnest or sarcastic/playful, but I'm currently leaning toward the latter.
