Technically released in many parts of the world in 2009, Asghar Farhadi's About Elly got an American release this year at the Film Forum. I will consider it a 2015 release but am dumping this subject here since XIXAX has many members abroad. Still, it's a masterful thriller. Similar to he anxiety potential of Cassavete's A Woman under the Influence, the film is the slow unwinding that happens after a friend goes missing at a weekend getaway amongst families and friends. Drawing on drama of playing out a situation to real time anxieties in a confined space, Farhadi shows his mastery over storytelling and filmmaking here. It's also a humble storytelling and filmmaking effort compared to what he will do later in A Separation, but still a wholly effective and great work. One of the best of the year.
