It's really not worth it. I tried it twice and no responses. In his book, you'll be just another fan.

from what i recall from a long time ago, someone did get a reply back and posted their letter....it was a letter written on a sheet of white paper with a red marker...said something to the effect of 'keeping on verbing, noun!', don't remember what the verb or noun was but it was signed pta

slice is saying the letter said nothing but the usual pep-talk sentence., keep on ___, ____. u know, "keep on trucking, man!" or "keep on fuckin, dirk!". verbing, noun, is just filling in the space for the type of word that would go in there. verb is an action, noun is a name.

thats why you need to write him a letter that you will be his assistant for free and you will clean his house for free and shit so he can let you work with him.

although I love PTA's movies, and I know you guys hate the man I'm about to mention, but Kevin Smith is super cool about keeping in contact with his fans.  That is why he will probably always remain my favorite director.

yeah kevin smith is about a million times cooler with his fans than pta. that's a fact.

but i don't watch films to make friends. so i guess that's the difference.

i don't think that should be a reason to make a director good...  just a good and funny public personality. same (kinda) with Roger Avary.  they keep in touch with their fans and constantly update their respective websites but they're not delivering too many goods.

i've heard some mean stories that ocurred on the set of Jay and Silent Bob, tho..

maybe it's propaganda, i don't care, but it's  on www.jayandsilentbobstrikeback.com

haha, classic (and so true)

At any rate, I wrote Paul a letter after Magnolia. It was kinda gushy and almost fanboy, and of course I called Hard Eight "Sydney"... whadda ya gonna do, I was in film school, depressed as hell, and the only thing that made me consistently happy was Paul's movies. At any rate, I told him that one day I hoped to make a film that he would enjoy as much as I enjoyed his. And blah, blah, blah. I didn't expect a response, and didn't get one. But it made me feel good to write it...

No, it isn't enough to make a director good but it is enough for him to remain my favorite.

Some people make films for the art, some for money and others for the fans.  It just kind of feels good to know that the person's whose movies I love actually cares that people like me loves his movies and shows that.

try answering your fan letter yourself, and then try doing that for every single letter, start with just 10 letters for the beggining. It's pure masochism.

the next time someone meets him they have to scrawl XIXAX on a piece of paper and take a picture of him holding it.  actually, that should go for any directors that anybody meets.

Dear Paul Thomas Anderson,

I love your movies.  They make me giggle, flirt, fuck, cry, laugh, fantasize, skank, and yell.  I have seen Magnolia 2,345 times, Boogie Nights 7, 001 times, Punch-Drunk Love 1,555 times, and then Hard Ei Sydney 32 times.  I also started smoking cigarettes and  talking more using my hands more because of you.  Please make me proud and keep up the most exellent work.  I wish my organs were as good as yours-mine suck.

P.S.  What do those frogs mean?

I think it's quite cool that PTA is willing to answer just about any question asked from people on this board.

I really wouldn't ask for anything more than that ^.

What if everyone sends a letter to PTA that has some questions or comments and its sighned xixax at the bottom everyone then he will know that he has a big following here? good idea or not?

bad/pointless idea.

at least 3 ppl hav already mentioned xixax to him, that guy who got him to autograph to us, mike D when he would call him to ask him if he was posting at C&C, and Greg who mentions us when he sends him the REGULAR EMAIL QUESTIONS we compiled not too long ago.

so, i think we got enuff fan interraction going with that dude, if u send one to him u would hav to send one to fincher, crowe, wes, scors, kubrick., i mean, we are not a pta site anymore.. and shouldn't label ourselves as such.

I have never tried to write PTA, but I have had luck contacting other people through the WGA.  Or try the DGA.  You could also try to contact Robert Elswit through the cinematographer's union.  You're more likely to get a response from someone like him than PTA.

As for Kevin Smith, I have mixed feelings about his films, but I think the diary he posts on his site is great.  I can't think of any other major filmmaker who chronicles the nuts and bolts of the filmmaking process the way he does.  If only PTA and QT would do the same thing.

Yeah, cinematographers are super-cool about contacts. I emailed this guy at the asc website once, asking a question about one scene in The Limey, and he sent back "why don't you ask Ed Lachmann about it..." and gives me Ed's email. I was too much of a pussy to email my stupid question to Ed, but all the same, pretty cool...

I searched for a thread on this topic for a while. It's too bad no one got a response. I was being way too wishful though. I bought one of these: http://shop.mrshabba.com/products/there-will-be-blood (http://shop.mrshabba.com/products/there-will-be-blood) and was hoping to get it signed but I don't think they would have even opened anything bigger than an envelope anyway. oh well it will still look great framed.
