"This will be closer to the version that played Sundance in 2001," Kelly tells Fango. "It will contain a lot of deleted scenes that were included on the DVD, and stuff that people have never seen before. We're adding pop songs that we weren't able to use the first time, and new visual effects we couldn't afford the first time around. This edition will also have more answers to the questions the film raises," he promises.

Oh god. George Lucas Jr. This guy's just fucked his own movie.

Well at least he's putting in more music...I don't like the fact that he's adding more visuals and trying to "answer" those questions the film raises.  I like being able to interpret things my own way, not have it crammed down my throat.

As a late reply to this thread, you should be able to find the latest info on Richard Kelly (including the Donnie Darko Director's Cut and Southland Tales info) on a new fan website:   www.richard-kelly.net

Does anyone else find that site mildly annoying?

Southland Tales

For writer-director Richard Kelly, the natural follow-up to 2001's wacko Donnie Darko was this sci-fi-thriller-comedy about a three-day heat wave in L.A. in 2008. Kelly's "musical designed for people who hate musicals" has an eclectic cast that includes Sarah Michelle Gellar, Seann William Scott, and Janeane Garofalo, with original music by Moby (and Kelly hopes, Trent Reznor). Quote from: Xixaxhow many of you were duped into "DYING to see that movie!!!" when the Volkswagen "Mr. Blue Sky" commercial aired in theaters this summer???

That would be me.      I was absolutely bummed when it wasn't a film.  I saw the commercial 5 or 6 times, though-  I have to say it was one of the better ads I've ever seen (not that ads should be shown in the theater in the first place!).

Kevin Smith on Richard Kelly's SOUTHLAND TALES
Source: AICN

I attended a Q&A with director Kevin Smith last night at the University of Connecticut.  It was fun long, and informative.  Barring a few ridiculous questions to guest Jason Mewes, it was a great time.

I managed to sneak up to a microphone and churn out a question for Mr. Smith, regarding his involvement in Richard Kelly's upcoming film 'Southland Tales,' and the commentary he is doing on the 'Donnie Darko' director's cut DVD.  Kevin explained a bit about where he met Richard and how they came to be friends.

While Kevin didn't reveal much about Southland Tales, he did say that Richard sent him the script, and it completely blew his mind.  He said it was a sort of combination of elements from 'Pulp Fiction,' 'The Player,' and 'Magnolia' (only the good parts of it), that is still nonetheless a Richard Kelly script.  He described it as a sprawling epic that he cannot wait for people to see.  He also added that Richard wants to completely change Kevin's look for the film.  He wants him to lose fifty pounds, shave his head, and his beard.  Kevin said that there was no hope on the fifty pounds, and since he is already going bald, he doesn't want to hasten the process by shaving his noggin.
Christopher Nolan's directive was clear to everyone in the cast and crew: Use CGI only as a last resort.

I have been reading up on Southland Tales a bit, lately.  Donnie Darko Director's Cut is out next week, I guess that's why.  I remember the quote somewhere on Xixax where it was said Kelly wrote Southland Tales (nice title) to cheer himself up during the Donnie Darko troubles.  This reminded me of someone who read some scripts of his, a friend of a friend who worked in Hollywood last summer said this of it:
Quote"Southland Tales"- This is Magnolia meets Pulp Fiction with an end of the world twist thrown in. Basically a struggling troupe of actors, the movie star they attempt to kidnap, a spoiled, white-boy thug and his friends, the porn star dating the movie star, two crack-head gossip journalists trying to blackmail the movie star, and the cops trying to figure everything else out are ALL interconnected though they do not realize it. Lots of back-stabbings, double-crosses, strange connections, near-misses with each other, and prophecies about a doomsday movie script coming true. Very weird. This is Richard Kelley's next movie, though IMDB.com lists it as a Comedy/Musical, it is anything but.

Also, three other scripts he's read of Kelly's:
Quote"Knowing"- A thriller in which a time capsule from 1950 is opened, and a little girl predicted the deaths of JFK, Martin Luther King, and others, and some large events that are set to happen very soon.

"Bessie"- What seems to be a spoof on Jurassic Park, a script about a genetically engineered upright-walking, talking cow, and a team of experts who is brought in to ease her reveal to the public. Thigns go wrong, and, well....yeah it's really weird.

"Domino"- A script about a tough female bounty hunter and her team as they go through double-crosses, mob bosses, and the FBI while trying to save their necks from a setup. Tony Scott, Ridley's younger brother, looks to be directing this next. They are hoping Keira Knightley will star.

This is from July of last summer, just didn't think to post it then, so who knows how much of it is still accurate.  I see some brief stuff on Bessie and Domino was posted a while back.  This is a bit of elaboration on Southland Tales, at least.

Kelly launches Darko Entertainment
First film will be Abe Sylvia's 'Dirty Girl'
Source: Variety

On the eve of the release of his offbeat musical "Southland Tales," Richard Kelly has joined producing partner Sean McKittrick and financier Ted Hamm to form Darko Entertainment.

The entity, named for the writer-helmer's cult hit "Donnie Darko," will aim to back modestly budgeted, director-driven films.

First up is "Dirty Girl," skedded to start in November under the direction of tyro Abe Sylvia. "Dirty" is a co-venture with Killer Films, with longtime Killer associate John Wells serving as exec producer.

Killer is unveiling Sylvia's pic on the heels of a busy Toronto, where its "Then She Found Me," starring and directed by Helen Hunt, netted one of the fest's big sales, a $3 million North American deal.

Its Todd Haynes-directed Bob Dylan pic "I'm Not There" also unspooled to largely positive response after netting Cate Blanchett an acting prize and Haynes a special jury prize in Venice.

Also under the Darko banner is "The Box," a psychological thriller starring Cameron Diaz that is in pre-production. Pic is drawing on a recently announced fund from Media Rights Capitol.

Kelly's "Southland," a rough version of which preemed in Cannes two years ago, has been retooled and bows Nov. 9. It stars Justin Timberlake, Dwayne Johnson and Sarah Michelle Gellar.

With the Darko venture, McKittrick said, "Our goal is to get behind filmmakers with unique voices and take advantage of the Darko brand to help independent films reach a much wider audience."

While "Darko," a smash at Sundance, never became a "Little Miss Sunshine"-scale hit, the enigmatic film developed a sizable cult following. Stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Drew Barrymore and Seth Rogen have helped drive DVD sales.
