I recently heard some very vague word-of-mouth that he was writing his next script, and it again had something to do with time travel.

I can't wait to see his new stuff.

I'm sorry, I really enjoyed Donnie Darko, but at times the dialogue seemed amateurish and cliched. Occassionally, it made me cringe. It reminded me of how I used to write in 9th Grade. It was a wonderful idea, but definitely could have benefitted from a rewrite.

That was my impression also...especially Drew Barrymore's dialogue...I remember her whole performance being pretty bad.  I liked the idea of the movie, but I didn't really get into it.  I want to give it a second chance after hearing how much other people loved it.

But I think that was what was so good, the way the movie really seemed to speak from the point of view of a teenager, and since it suggested dream/fiction it would be appropriate to not be quite a thirty year old's view/mode of expression, but to use cliche and '9th Grade' level language and ideas. I do think it was intentional, because overall the film worked that line between sophisticated/adult and simplistic/immature (implying that the two couldn't really be separated for either the adults -eg Barrymore - or the teenagers) and Donnie's character and the tone of the film were convincing and charismatic because of it.

True, true, true! Donnie Darko had such a great use of music. I've always considered "Under the Milky Way" to be a haunting song, but the movie made it even cooler.

There are lots of great examples like this. PTA of course is great at picking music to go with his film.

And while I'm thinking about it, how many of you were duped into "DYING to see that movie!!!" when the Volkswagen "Mr. Blue Sky" commercial aired in theaters this summer???

speaking of the Mr. Blue Sky commercial, I thought it was kind of cheap that it got ripped off by those new Adaptation commercials with the same song

Nope, not that one. I was looking at it, and the Theater of Magic right behind it but didn't nibble on either one that day.

I do, however, own a Bally Revenge from Mars, a Bally Cirqus Voltaire ("I am the Ringmaster!"), and a classic Stern Trident, along with a couple of little known but sentimental video games. No pics of me posing with them though...

Well, you guys are missing the fact that TO A POINT the dialogue was supposed to be a touch campy and hokey like that. It was intentional. In the commentary, Richard comments on how the whole feel of the movie was to be a little bit "comic bookish". In fact, Jena Malone's character alludes to that when she teases Donnie about his name. She says something about it sounding like a superhero's name.

So that dialogue that's a little juvenile, in my opinion, was intentionally juvenile.

When you mix that very subtle overtone with stuff like the Smurf and Smurfette scene dialogue (which is one of the most brilliant dialogue moments I've encountered since Pulp Fiction), you've got real talent.

I can't wait to see what he comes up with next. I'd venture to say that he's one of my favorite filmmakers, even though he's only done one movie. There's no question in my mind that his future works will be phenomenal.

Xixax, I do like the movie, but I feel like after the first three viewings it loses something. First I'm watching it for the first time and I'm paying attention to the story, then I watch it again looking for what it all means, third time I'm focusing on the aesthetics. When I watched it again, it all seemed kind of like it was trying to do something special. The more and more I watch it it feels like he was trying to do something so special and cool, like he wanted people to ponder it over for weeks and say, that Kelly dude is a genius! But little things (like the Smurfette dialogue) seem out of place in the movie. Like it's TRYING to be clever. It's not a BAD film, by any means. I just feel that it doesn't connect with me. I'm the same age as these characters, and while I can relate to SOME of the things in the movie, I just feel like nobody I know talks like this. Nobody I know meets some chick and then decides to "go steady" with her after talking to her for 5 minutes, and I doubt that after those 5 minutes I would reveal my mental problems to this same girl. Also, I've been seeing a lot of Jake Gyllenhall movies lately and he's starting to get on my nerves. Sorry for anybody that LOVES this film - I used to REALLY love this film until I watched it and got to thinking. Now I only like it because the more I watch, the more the flaws are noticable.

Early Monday morning AICN's surly contributor named Quint reported a team-up many in the horror genre are already buzzing with excitement about.

Eli Roth ("Cabin Fever") and Richard Kelly ("Donnie Darko") are collaborating on a script adapted from a work by Richard Matheson.

For those of you who haven't seen Roth's film, believe us, there's no reason to put on some sort of faux excitement. This is a good thing. Roth and Kelly are more than capable to bring us the wet, gory mayhem.

We found out a bit more about this project from Corner friend Eli Roth himself. Here's some info we gathered from this up-and-coming horror talent:

The duo are currently drafting a script entitled "The Box." I'm not all that familiar with Matheson so if this title rings a bell, please let me know. Roth is going to helm the project with hopes to make it as eerie as "Polanski and Nakata." Strapped with full creative control and funded independently, the two hope to deliver something incredibly fucked up and violent...as long as it can garner an R-rating.

Im not looking forward to this, something about hearing abour a gory horror movie doesnt appeal to me, I dont really like that genre and wish Kelly would do some of the other 100 projects he has been reported to be connected to.

Donnie Darko Director's Cut Rerelease, Book, Frank the Bunny doll
Source: AICN

Donnie Darko book, figurine, special edition re-release announced at San Diego screening.

Richard Kelly, writer-director of Donnie Darko, attended a special screening in San Diego where he announced an upcoming book and Todd McFarlane figurine based on the 2001 cult classic, as well as a potential theatrical re-release in March of 2004.

The Q&A session, following a 4:00 showing on Sunday the 19th at Madstone Theaters onFrazee Road, was arranged by the San Diego Film Critics Society, who awarded Kelly Best Screenplay in 2002 while he was in Europe. The casual crowd filled three-fourths of the theater, an excellent turnout for an otherwise poorly advertised event. As much as 1/4 of the audience had never seen the film.

Immediately following the credits, Kelly, in jeans and grey T-shirt, made his way to the stool in front - he had intended to present the film, but his car had broken down and he had to borrow another. Following a brief introduction he immediately began taking audience questions.

* When asked how he marketed the unusual script, Kelly thanked his producing partner Scott McKittrick, who had shopped it to an assistant at a major agency, which led to him being signed with Creative Artists (CAA). Initially only the screenwriter, Kelly got his chance to direct when Jason Schwartzman of Rushmore fame showed interest and became attached to the project. He passed it to Drew Barrymore, who approached Kelly's agent at ShoWest and met with him on the set of Charlie's Angels. He offered her a part; she offered to produce.

* Kelly compared Darko's cul-de-sac ending to "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge," the Twilight Zone episode based on the Ambrose Bierce short story about a man about to be hanged who, in his final moments, imagines himself surviving and escaping.

* He sites Steven King, Philip K. Dick, Camus, Kafka, Graham Greene, and Dostoevsky as literary influences. He admitted not having read any of them since high school English and not knowing which way to pronounce Camus.

* Heís a big fan of Kill Bill and Quentin Tarantino, who he met at the premier. Also a fan of Paul Thomas Anderson and Spike Jonze/Charlie Kaufman. Apparently, when Kaufman turned in his draft of Adaptation, everyone in Hollywood wanted to kill him. Kelly tells another story about a screening of Being John Malcovitch: a producer who passed on it walked out claiming she'd dodged a bullet, and, later, at the Oscars, talked about how it was one of her favorite films of the year.

* The concept of the screenplay began with the jet engine. It was inspired by the urban legend of the block of frozen urine that falls from a plane and strikes a man dead - an idea, Kelly pointed out, that was also used in an episode of Six Feet Under.

* When asked about his struggles filming Donnie Darko and whether he expects his struggles to get worse, Kelly clarified that filmmaking is always a struggle. "There's always 20 bozos who'll screw it up," he complained. "They're not in it for the art at all; to them it's just a business." He discussed his next film, Knowing, which has been caught in legal entanglements; principal photography won't begin until early next year, due in part to the film's $15 million budget. (Darko, which was made for more that a third less, failed to earn back production costs.)

* On the scripts he is writing for other directors in the meantime, Kelly claimed he considers it work-for-hire, though he emphasized the importance of owning and protecting one's material until it is set to go into production. "They can cast Carrot Top," he warned. "You're fucked."

* When asked if he intended the faculty in Darko to be so blatantly incompetent, Kelly reiterated that the characters are supposed to be archetypes, but, yes, Kitty and the principal are "clearly nitwits," while the teachers played by Barrymore and Noah Wyle are the liberal progressive types he admired growing up in Virginia. If Darko has any message, he concedes it would be that public schools and suburban life in general can be so pointlessly damaging that it's no wonder kids are shooting up their schools.

* Most of the throwaway details in the film were written in the script - right down to the "God Is Awesome!" T-Shirt. Kelly admitted admiration for directors like Ridley Scott and Terry Gilliam who emphasize details, and pointed out that technicians appreciate it when you're real specific.

* Patrick Swayze is the nicest man in the world. The infomercial was shot on his ranch; his wife showed them his recording studio and brought out his "80's clothes." Swayze was very enthusiastic about the project: ìHe wanted to take a blowtorch to his image."

* Kelly got to USC on an art scholarship, and changed his major almost immediately. He got into the film department on the strength of his writing samples, and intended to continue as a screenwriter until his peers told him he was most defiantly a director. His dad was a scientist at NASA, and his whole family has a background in architecture and engineering, and after all, ìa director is an architect.î

* The Donnie Darko book - not a novel, more like a production book, like the Matrix coffee table book - is already available inLondonand contains the screenplay, including unproduced scenes. It will be available in theUSshortly.

* When asked, he defended Cherita, the plump Chinese girl, by comparing her to the Mike Yanagita character inFargo. All he does it hit on Marge and lie about his marriage - the studio should have cut the scene, Kelly claims. But when Marge discovers that he lied, it makes her wonder if sheís easily lied to - prompting her to question Jerry Lundegaard a second time. Yanagita was secretly crucial. Kelly failed to explain why putting on Cheritaís earmuffs was an important stage in the development of Donnieís character, but claimed it was anyhow.

As he got up to leave, the SDFCS representative reminded him of his special announcement: he is in negotiations with Newmarket Film Group to re-release Donnie Darko next March, including more pop music removed since it was shown at Sundance, and, more importantly - it will be a Directorís Cut. He claimed it may include stuff not available on the DVD. He did not specify how wide it will be distributed.

The SDFCS rep also reminded him to tell us that McFarlane Toys is working on a Frank the Bunny doll.

Kelly, though appearing tired, was willing to sign DVD covers and chatted with fans as they left the theater.

Madstone will continue showing Donnie Darko until the 23rd.

1. Great movie,

2. Do we need a re-release, though?

3. Won't this inevitably lead to another Super Special Edition DVD that we don't need?

4.

What an absolutely ridiculous thing to say. How many generations of kids grew up in the suburbs and in "pointlessly damaging" public schools and didn't shoot each other up?

5. I want a Frank the Bunny figurine NOW, Daddy!

Richard Kelly's Next: The man who brought us the odd but surprisingly edgy "Donnie Darko" is coming back to theatres soon with a vengeance. In an interview with About.Com (go here (http://romanticmovies.about.com/cs/donniedarko/a/rkellyint.htm)) this week, he went into extensive detail as to where his various upcoming projects stand right now - at present the guy has not one or two but NINE potential work avenues:

*Cats Cradle: Just to clarify, the project right now is sort of in limbo. I was hired by Appian Way...Hilly Elkins has control of the novel and they came to me and asked me to adapt it. I accepted their offer and I locked myself in a hotel room by the beach for about eight days and cranked out an adaptation of the novel. But it’s yet to be determined who is going to direct it, if it’s going to be Darren [Aronofsky]. I don’t know if it’s going to be Darren or not. I think that they’re still figuring out exactly what they want to do with the project. It’s very much up in the air and in flux right now, so stayed tuned on that one (laughing). I’ve taken significant liberties with the novel. I think I’ve done a very faithful interpretation. I tried to capture the essence of the novel. It’s a fairly radical adaptation ...probably more ‘inspired by’ the novel. I’ve tried to take some of his [Kurt Vonnegut] visionary ideas and bring them to a modern audience, and make them accessible to a modern audience. My hope is that, if this film is made, that a whole new generation will discover his genius.

*Knowing: "It’s been delayed four or five times due to budget, distribution, foreign distribution issues, casting issues… It’s seriously harder to get “Knowing” off the ground than it was to get “Donnie Darko” off the ground (laughing). We’re definitely hoping to start shooting the first quarter of 2004. There’s some legal entanglements involving the ownership of the screenplay and foreign distribution that have contributed significantly to the delay. It’s frustrating and I wish I could have already been in production by now, but I just want to get it right. You don’t want to rush into a situation where we can’t get enough money or we can’t get the right cast. I’m just holding out 'til we get it right.

*House at the End of the Street: That’s a project that Jonathan Mostow approached me about, and he’d murder me if I said anything about the plot. We’re still putting the finishing touches on it and going back and forth with the script. But I’m really excited about what’s going to become of that film, too.

Kelly is also working on a director's cut of "Donnie Darko", an adaptation of Richard Mathieson's "The Box" alongside Eli Roth ("Cabin Fever"), directing a project entitled "Southland Tales", developing a Kate Hudson-led actioneer entitled "Into the Great Wide Open", penning a bounty hunter biopic script entitled "Domino" for Tony Scott, and developing his Pulp Fiction-esque dream project called "Bessie". Whew, a busy bee indeed.

DONNIE DARKO special edition coming to theaters

If you never got a chance to see Richard Kelly's weirdly wonderful dark fantasy DONNIE DARKO in theaters—or even if you did—the writer/director has good news. He just gave Fango the scoop that original distributor Newmarket will bring the movie back to the big screen in a special-edition reissue this spring or summer.

"This will be closer to the version that played Sundance in 2001," Kelly tells Fango. "It will contain a lot of deleted scenes that were included on the DVD, and stuff that people have never seen before. We're adding pop songs that we weren't able to use the first time, and new visual effects we couldn't afford the first time around. This edition will also have more answers to the questions the film raises," he promises.

In the meantime, Kelly is gearing up to direct the Fox Searchlight chiller KNOWING and wrapping up THE HOUSE AT THE END OF THE STREET, a horror script he's writing for Jonathan (T3) Mostow to direct. "I'm putting the last revisions on the final draft," he reports. "I'm meeting at Universal this week about it."

Donnie Darko Director's Cut
Exclusive Interview With Richard Kelly
Source: Empire Online

Fans rejoice, because cult hit Donnie Darko will be returning to cinemas this year as an extended Director's Cut. Containing all-new footage, a re-mixed audio track and brand new visual effects, the new edit is being heralded as an all-new theatrical experience and we spoke to writer/director Richard Kelly to get the full story.

Whose idea was it to re-cut the film for a second release?
Well, I was in New York doing a Q&A at one of the midnight screenings last summer and Bob Berney from Newmarket was there. He came up to me afterwards and said 'Richard, we might want to think about re-releasing it.' I said 'well, if we're going to do it, why not let me do a new version of it and give people a real reason to come back to the theatre and see it again.'

They knew how much additional footage there was and they gave me the autonomy to finish the film how I'd always intended to finish it. This in no way negates the first theatrical cut though, I'm not dismissing it in any way; it's just a way for me to expand my vision for the film and give a more thorough version of it. It's letting me complete the sequences we didn't have the money to complete and put in additional plot music that we'd always wanted to put into the film but couldn't afford.

My original vision was always a kind of epic science fiction tale but it had to be condensed to come in under two hours. Ultimately I found it impossible to fully communicate the story in under two hours but now I don't have a restriction on running time, hopefully audiences will be able to re-experience the film in a completely new way. With the new visual effects and new sound design I think it's something the fans will want to see on the big screen.

Some of the new material was on the DVD release but you're adding footage that you originally held back. Did you always have a Director's Cut in mind?
When I made the DVD the first time around I knew that it was going to be a compromised DVD at best - in terms of the packaging. On the first Region 1 DVD I did finagle my way in with the programmers though and we worked with means well beyond our budget 'cause they were fans of the film. But in the back of my mind I did think that maybe one day I'd get to do a director's cut so I saved some stuff that would be a real surprise for people. In hindsight I'm glad that I did as this material is stuff that even people who've seen the DVD thirty times will still be surprised by.

Can you give us any specifics on the new material?
I kind of want to leave it as a surprise but I will say that this it will be worth the price of admission - it's not trying to cash-in on the fan-base, it's a wholly new theatrical experience. It will expand the meaning of the film and offer more clues and more solutions to the puzzle and create an additional layer of mystery for the audience. There really is a tremendous amount of new material - some of which will surprise even the most die-hard fans. One thing I am really excited about is the new sound. I was really unhappy with the mix that we had in the first cut. We never really had time to go in properly and design the sound. We can go back and really get it right this time. I'm very excited about the new sonic elements of the film.

How about the soundtrack, will we see some more classic eighties numbers?
There are gonna be some pop music surprises but I don't want to spoil anything. It's all good though - I'm not a fool, I haven't gone in there and botched the things that people love. Donnie does not shoot first - I'm not pulling a Greedo.

Will we get to see a UK release of the Director's cut?
Absolutely. Metrodome was really wonderful and helped contribute to some of our music budget. They were very aggressive about wanting to get the film back in UK cinemas. As to when, I think that's up to Metrodome but I would anticipate before the end of the year. They did well in the Fall of 2002 so that's pretty likely.

I dunno if it was 'amazing' but it was good, sure. I never understood why people always said: "Unhh...it's so confusing I can sit and watch it like 30 times and still find little clues." It's more complicated than your average film, but its not THAT complicated (certainly no Mulholland Dr.)

why did you have an expectation?  it was a little no-budget film from a first time director who before it was a nobody?

chest, i think its a little unfair to compare this to mulholland drive.  mulholland drive was a pilot with tons of unfinished threads that were being sewn for a potential series and often david lynch does things without a reason that could be interpted 100 different ways as clues, when sometimes they dont mean anything more than what they are.  donnie darko is a story that is self-contained and can be understood  because it was meant to be, not because its not complex enough.

You're probably right. This is one of those movies that I'm a little harder on because I hate the people that like it. It's not very fair of me, but those people irritate me so much. I also hate the whole thing with highschoolers these days where it's so "hip" to be a Tarantinian. Except that his are films leave a much grander impression on my mind so it doesn't reflect negatively on the films themselves. Either way, Donnie Darko was good, not great. I'd say it was a rather impressive first film, though.

I didn't see it when it first came out and then when it was released on dvd a bunch of my friends saw it at different times and said like "this is my favorite movie ever." or "Its a movie you'll really like."   So I finally decided to see it.  Thats where my high expectations came from.

From Entertainment Weekly:

The 'Chicago' Effect
Can lightning strike twice? Musicals line up for the big screen.

Southland Tales

For writer-director Richard Kelly, the natural follow-up to 2001's wacko Donnie Darko was this sci-fi-thriller-comedy about a three-day heat wave in L.A. in 2008. Kelly's "musical designed for people who hate musicals" has an eclectic cast that includes Sarah Michelle Gellar, Seann William Scott, and Janeane Garofalo, with original music by Moby (and Kelly hopes, Trent Reznor). Kevin Smith on Richard Kelly's SOUTHLAND TALES
Source: AICN

I attended a Q&A with director Kevin Smith last night at the University of Connecticut.  It was fun long, and informative.  Barring a few ridiculous questions to guest Jason Mewes, it was a great time.

I managed to sneak up to a microphone and churn out a question for Mr. Smith, regarding his involvement in Richard Kelly's upcoming film 'Southland Tales,' and the commentary he is doing on the 'Donnie Darko' director's cut DVD.  Kevin explained a bit about where he met Richard and how they came to be friends.

While Kevin didn't reveal much about Southland Tales, he did say that Richard sent him the script, and it completely blew his mind.  He said it was a sort of combination of elements from 'Pulp Fiction,' 'The Player,' and 'Magnolia' (only the good parts of it), that is still nonetheless a Richard Kelly script.  He described it as a sprawling epic that he cannot wait for people to see.  He also added that Richard wants to completely change Kevin's look for the film.  He wants him to lose fifty pounds, shave his head, and his beard.  Kevin said that there was no hope on the fifty pounds, and since he is already going bald, he doesn't want to hasten the process by shaving his noggin.

I have been reading up on Southland Tales a bit, lately.  Donnie Darko Director's Cut is out next week, I guess that's why.  I remember the quote somewhere on Xixax where it was said Kelly wrote Southland Tales (nice title) to cheer himself up during the Donnie Darko troubles.  This reminded me of someone who read some scripts of his, a friend of a friend who worked in Hollywood last summer said this of it:
Quote"Southland Tales"- This is Magnolia meets Pulp Fiction with an end of the world twist thrown in. Basically a struggling troupe of actors, the movie star they attempt to kidnap, a spoiled, white-boy thug and his friends, the porn star dating the movie star, two crack-head gossip journalists trying to blackmail the movie star, and the cops trying to figure everything else out are ALL interconnected though they do not realize it. Lots of back-stabbings, double-crosses, strange connections, near-misses with each other, and prophecies about a doomsday movie script coming true. Very weird. This is Richard Kelley's next movie, though IMDB.com lists it as a Comedy/Musical, it is anything but.

Also, three other scripts he's read of Kelly's:
Quote"Knowing"- A thriller in which a time capsule from 1950 is opened, and a little girl predicted the deaths of JFK, Martin Luther King, and others, and some large events that are set to happen very soon.

"Bessie"- What seems to be a spoof on Jurassic Park, a script about a genetically engineered upright-walking, talking cow, and a team of experts who is brought in to ease her reveal to the public. Thigns go wrong, and, well....yeah it's really weird.

"Domino"- A script about a tough female bounty hunter and her team as they go through double-crosses, mob bosses, and the FBI while trying to save their necks from a setup. Tony Scott, Ridley's younger brother, looks to be directing this next. They are hoping Keira Knightley will star.

This is from July of last summer, just didn't think to post it then, so who knows how much of it is still accurate.  I see some brief stuff on Bessie and Domino was posted a while back.  This is a bit of elaboration on Southland Tales, at least.

Kelly launches Darko Entertainment
First film will be Abe Sylvia's 'Dirty Girl'
Source: Variety

On the eve of the release of his offbeat musical "Southland Tales," Richard Kelly has joined producing partner Sean McKittrick and financier Ted Hamm to form Darko Entertainment.

The entity, named for the writer-helmer's cult hit "Donnie Darko," will aim to back modestly budgeted, director-driven films.

First up is "Dirty Girl," skedded to start in November under the direction of tyro Abe Sylvia. "Dirty" is a co-venture with Killer Films, with longtime Killer associate John Wells serving as exec producer.

Killer is unveiling Sylvia's pic on the heels of a busy Toronto, where its "Then She Found Me," starring and directed by Helen Hunt, netted one of the fest's big sales, a $3 million North American deal.

Its Todd Haynes-directed Bob Dylan pic "I'm Not There" also unspooled to largely positive response after netting Cate Blanchett an acting prize and Haynes a special jury prize in Venice.

Also under the Darko banner is "The Box," a psychological thriller starring Cameron Diaz that is in pre-production. Pic is drawing on a recently announced fund from Media Rights Capitol.

Kelly's "Southland," a rough version of which preemed in Cannes two years ago, has been retooled and bows Nov. 9. It stars Justin Timberlake, Dwayne Johnson and Sarah Michelle Gellar.

With the Darko venture, McKittrick said, "Our goal is to get behind filmmakers with unique voices and take advantage of the Darko brand to help independent films reach a much wider audience."

While "Darko," a smash at Sundance, never became a "Little Miss Sunshine"-scale hit, the enigmatic film developed a sizable cult following. Stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Drew Barrymore and Seth Rogen have helped drive DVD sales.

Edgar Ramirez To Star In Richard Kelly's 'Corpus Christi' Produced By Robert Rodriguez & Eli Roth
Source: Playlist

Oh hey, Richard Kelly, remember him? He's the director who came out of the gate with promise with "Donnie Darko, and then squandered that goodwill with the bellyflop that was "Southland Tales" and then the horror movie no one saw called "The Box." For the past few years he's been trying to get "Corpus Christi" off the ground, and in fact, just over a year ago he was hoping to pull together the financing to shoot it last summer. Obviously that didn't happen but a couple fellow genre specialists are helping him to get the movie rolling.

Robert Rodrigeuz's newly formed Quick Draw Productions will team with Kelly's Darko Entertainment and Eli Roth to back "Corpus Christi." And even more, "Carlos" and "Wrath Of The Titans" star Edgar Ramirez will take the lead. And if you think Kelly has had it with high concept fare, guess again. Set in the distant future of 2014, the film follows a mentally unstable Iraq war veteran named Paciencia "Patience" De La Rosa, suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, who forges a strange and dangerous friendship with Ralph Salverson, a Texas industrialist. Previous reports had the latter as the owner of a supermarket chain, but we guess that has been tweaked.

Well, we gotta hand it to Kelly -- he's certainly not taking the safe or easy route. Though this is apparently a "more traditional narrative" the logline suggests something that's anything but ordinary. Shooting kicks off in July.

Richard Kelly Says He's Planning Another 'Donnie Darko' Movie
via The Playlist

The story of director Richard Kelly is one of breakout talent, high expectations, a colossal crash and a fading away from the spotlight. In sixteen years ago this month when the filmmaker became the toast of Sundance with "Donnie Darko," and by the end of 2001, Hollywood was his oyster. Kelly used his cachet to make "Southland Tales," a sprawling, star-studded misfire that went into the Cannes Film Festival for its big premiere and never recovered from the reviews. Kelly would make one more feature, the forgettable 2009 horror "The Box," and he's since stayed out of the limelight. But he could be plotting a major return.

"Donnie Darko" is currently getting a major revival across the pond, hitting the big screen in a new restoration, and receiving a lavish Blu-ray release from Arrow Video. And chatting with HMV, Kelly teased that he could be returning with another "Donnie Darko" movie set in same universe as his most famous film.

"I think there's something much bigger and more ambitious to do in that universe. It's big and expensive and I think there's time to get to that. I want to make sure we've got the budget to do it justice and not to compromise anything. Another story in this world needs resources and we need to have that in place. I need to get my next film out of the gate and then we can go back and look at it," he said.

As you can tell, he's being very cautious and rightfully so. Kelly already received blowback for his director's cut version of the movie (many prefer the original theatrical cut), and "Donnie Dark" is still his greatest legacy, so of course, he wants to make sure he does it right. (And while there is 2009's "S. Darko," that sequel had zero involvement from Kelly). As for his next movie? He isn't saying just yet, but he could be shooting something before the year is out.

"I've been working on a lot of different projects. The trouble is they're all very ambitious and expensive so they take a lot of time to get in place. We're being very careful to set things up properly, but I'm planning to make up for lost time and make several movies back to back. It's nice to be able to bring people back to where we started, but I plan to be back behind a camera in 2017," he said.

I'm glad, and I hope this is true. Finally decided to check out The Box after seeing the Cannes Cut of Southland Tales, and this Dude Has Got It, when It is an absurd amount of PKD Love. I wonder if Kelly has communed with VALIS.

i like that you like PKD. not only is he a rare bird in general, but he's a southern California writer, as in south of LA, as in Orange County, specifically Santa Ana. the only other popular writer i know associated with OC is Dean Koontz. and John Steinbeck famously lived at 504 Park in Laguna Beach. well, famous in Laguna Beach. but OC isn't well-known for writers. but they had PDK so it's like whatever anyway, you know.

PKD made University worthwhile to me... His works gave me insight to any course I wanted to take, math, philosophy history, then I read 'Divine Madness' a psychobiography of Dick's life along with The Exegesis. His writing has an arc that resembles his life, one that I could relate to more so than, like,  DFW or Pynchon, who my friends were always talking about, so I read his entire available bibliography and related works in the library to have my own lit-obsession, I think.

His tales of OC in The Selected Letters of Philip K Dick are so colorful it made me yearn for the sun of my homestate, Texas. But I've got student loans to pay off, so I lugged it over to LA. Blerg. Maybe I'll warp into CSU Fullerton's special collections and read his manuscripts, once I work out the dimensional mechanics.

if you travel to Fullerton you'll discover where republicans live. like in the movie Milk, when he has the republican debate, where the crowd is against him, that was in Fullerton. it's another side of CA

The Lone Star state and that side of CA might have their similarities (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=daSKfSFJlo4)

Richard Kelly Reportedly Working On A Biopic About 'Twilight Zone' Creator Rod Serling
via The Playlist

If we transport ourselves back in time to 2001, you might find that filmmaker Richard Kelly had the entire world ahead of him. After the breakout success of his film "Donnie Darko," all eyes were on the filmmaker and what he might do next. Sadly, for Kelly, by the time 2006's "Southland Tales" arrived in theaters and was one of the biggest bombs of the year, his future became far more grim. But hey, even though he's yet to recapture the glory of 'Darko' (which was literally attempted in "S. Darko," with the filmmaker denying any involvement), Kelly has proven to be an interesting filmmaker that many are expected to triumphantly return at some point in the future.

Well, according to a report from Production Weekly (via Comicbook.com), Kelly's next feature, his first since 2009's "The Box," is said to be a biopic about famed "Twilight Zone" creator/star Rod Serling. As mentioned, Serling is best known as the creator-host of the iconic anthology series "The Twilight Zone." His legendary voice and calm demeanor introduced each and every episode of the acclaimed, groundbreaking series.

The report says that Kelly will not only write the script but put himself in the director's chair, also. As was alluded to above, the filmmaker has yet to reach the heights that "Donnie Darko" achieved in his later films, "Southland Tales" and "The Box." His last film credit includes a producer's credit for "Operation: Endgame" in 2010. Outside of that, Kelly has remained quiet until now, with this Rod Serling biopic perhaps being his first film in almost a decade.

Possibly the most boring comeback possible—so it has it chances to be real, this time...

"Southland Tales" arrived in theaters and was one of the biggest bombs of the year

Budget:$17,000,000
Cumulative Worldwide Gross: $374,743

13 years later and I still believe that Southland Tales is an excellent film.  At this point I'm just waiting for it to archive cult classic status sometime in the future.

:/

Quote from: Richard Kelly via Twitter"#SouthlandTales is a six-chapter saga. The existing film covers the second half. I wrote graphic novels with @brettweldele that cover the first three chapters. I have completed an ambitious new script that uses the novels as a blueprint for an ambitious new film. My hope is to direct a new #SouthlandTales prequel film using a hybrid of animation and live-action. This new film could be released in tandem with an expanded version of the existing film with significant new content. If it happens... the animated portion of the new film would cover the 2008 events over the three days beginning on June 30th, when Boxer Santaros wakes up in the Nevada desert w/ amnesia... and then embarks on a journey through Las Vegas before returning to LA. The live action sections of the new film would bring to life sequences from THE POWER, the bonkers screenplay within-the-film written by Boxer Santaros and Krysta Now. THE POWER takes place in the year 2024 and has significant importance to the story told in 2008."

Boxer in LV would be very funny. If this happens (doubtful? who knowz with this guy) I hope Sarah Michelle Gellar features in The Power.
