I looked for a thread similar to this and couldn't find one. I'm a student, and this site is fucking with my ability to study. Who wants to take notes on Fascism when I can debate moral objectivity?
I'm beginning to anti-social and I don't think my friends understand this new found addiction.
Need a support group I think.

Sure it's the reason I can't finish my script, but I would never have been given a life similiar to the one I have here, full of friends I would never have met and opinions I would never have shared or been given by the people here. It's a place of acceptance and understanding; laughter and sorrow, and I'm grateful to have been here from the beginning and wouldn't want to miss one day of being a part of it all until the end.
If xixax is an addiction, I don't ever want to go cold turkey.
We're definitely one big dysfunctional family here. Sometimes, we fight like brothers and sisters in the back seat on a long road trip from hell. But it's usually worth it.
I find that not only Xixax, but the 'net in general, is a huge time-thief. Happily, there's that little clock in the corner of my screen letting me know exactly how much time I'm wasting online... though that's not always motivation enough to stop. :?
Xixax encourages it. Real life can be a bitch, though. Today I got rejected for an Advanced Fiction class. There were 22 applicants, 15 spots, and one alternate. I know one other girl who applied, and her story kicked ass, so I wouldn't be surprised if she got in. But my story kicked ass, too (in my not so humble opinion). And last semester most of the class I wrote it for at least enjoyed reading it, and there was only one who didn't like it, it seemed. Yet I didn't make the cut. Really sucks. Second time this has happened, but I guess one has to get used to it.
The worst part of it is, I e-mailed the woman who kind of does administrative stuff for the department. She was the one who broke the good or bad news to us by e-mail. I asked her who the professors were who made the decisions so I could ask them what I could do to improve for next time the applications come around. She told me that was confidential, and that my only real option was to ask my current professor for help and advice. Really pissed me off. They're fucking with people's minds, and their future educational paths, and they aren't the least bit accountable for their decisions. What makes it worse is that the process is so subjective, so there's really no clue as to what they want from you except for "good writing," which, in itself is so incredibly vague.
Just had to get that off my chest. So instead of Advanced Fiction, I will be taking Playwriting in the fall. Bleh. I've got one more chance to make that class. Not that it matters now. My hopes of graduating with honors were shot to hell when I didn't make the cut last semester. We're a support group, eh? Well, I need support, not a circle jerk. That's the hard part, too: finding people who can be constructive on your work, especially after you've worked so hard on it.
And I identify with you, Thrindle, for what it's worth. I can't stand conventional education. Only one more year of this shit before I can get out there and do something hopefully a bit more worthwhile.
Xixax for the sake of Xixax (chronically reloading until there's a new post) can be distracting.... but in moderation, Xixax is information and inspiration.
Moderation being measured in hours per day.

Nah, not really. Of course there are times I just feel an urge to go xixax, but it doesn't really come in the way of anything. What I'm really fucking thankful for, are all the great movies I never would've discovered had it not been for their mentions on Xixax, at least not this early in my life. I used to come here religiously, then things were getting too dramatic, and I'll say I was swept up into it. I think I'm drawn to it, as it can be pretty enthralling to get into a thick debate about nothing rather than checking DVD release dates and all that.
I've been coming less often because I've been working on scripts, and posting on other boards as well. Trying to divide schoolwork, scriptwriting, and meassage board checking/posting. Sadly the first part of the equation is usually subtracted.
I love Xixax. I've said it before and I'll say it again, this is a damn fine message board.
Xixax is fun; I try not to be here for too long in a day, though, because it distracts from schoolwork. If anything it's helped my motivation, though. This year I've seen more 'films' (I learned from Xixax that they're not called 'movies') than any other; and sure, this could be due simply to my maturation into the wide world of film, but since reading the Xixax forums I've felt a yearning to really learn about film as art, and delve deep into the history of film. I've recently broken the barrier by 'experiencing' my first respective Fellini and Godard films, and I hope to continue watching the classics and learning about them. Moreover I've learned to look at films in a new way since joining Xixax, analyzing everything about them, the technique with which everything was carried out, and most importantly how they really affect me, as I watch them.

A-men! I couldn't agree more. My taste has changed dramatically since I first ran across this place. And I also believe it has expanded my DVD collection 10 fold and killed my wallet in the process.

Speaking of DVD collections, I have a question for Mac...
How many copies do you have of the same DVD? With all the special editions and what have you out there, you must have bought two of the same a few times, right? Just curious...

I have, but that's why I trade 'em in for store credit at places like Wherehouse (3 used for 1 new) or my local record store, like I will when the new Panic Room comes out. But some DVDs (like the two editions of Monster's Ball, Dances With Wolves, Memento, Almost Famous, Alien) have completely different commentary tracks and/or extras that are both worth hanging on to.

Xixax is the only board I have ever been to that I know what the members think on any given topic. It's cool. Also, it's the only board where people don't annoy me to death. Even the most annoying aren't so bad (i.e.: me)

you'll have to be brave and limit your time - an hour when you finish what you set to do for a day. It's easy to lose yourself in this internet thing when it fulfills some desires you can't in "real world".
