The ones that aren't as obvious work the best, in my opinion. By that I mean the ones that don't haphazardly grab attention through the composition, "Their Day" being the biggest offender. I like the ones that don't make me think about the process of taking the photograph. Unless I'm missing something, it's not like those stairs are any more remarkable by being placed in that juxtaposition with the two people in the far back.

I think one exception to this is "Life on Lombard" but mostly because the wall actually has something to add. The poster with the bicycler going across the Golden Gate and the guy to the right looking like a lost tourist on an otherwise empty wall...now that's a beautiful placement of objects. Not quite but almost as magical as this famous shot of Cartier-Bresson's, with the jumper's silhouetted shape mirroring that of a dancer on a poster in the background:


The most successful ones, then, are the ones where I get a sense of you just putting your camera to something interesting and getting a shot (as opposed to sitting there for a minute composing). "Three Pigeons", "Waking Life", "Sup?", "He Sees the World", "Busyness in the DT" are what I'm talking about. I think those are my favorites. I don't know why but I even like the sepia aesthetic (I normally really don't) - I think you use it to far better effect than most do nowadays, by making a "new" city look old and haunting.

Then there's "Everything In Its Right Place," which is just a beautiful image. The dark bird flying by turns a picture fit for a post card from the late nineteenth century into something else, something dramatic.
