Title: Anyone seen any good shows lately?
Post by: smash on September 21, 2004, 12:48:39 AM
Well, this weekend I travelled to Minneapolis with my friend Sarah.  The original purpose of this trip was to see The Fiery Furnaces play at the 400 Bar, but this show only allowed 21+ to enter.  We still went to the venue and try and find a way in, but instead of confronting the 'ID Checker', Sarah and I just waited off to the side until we were ready to try something.  Then, we had the greatest luck in the world.  Matt Friedberger of the Fiery Furnaces walks out of the bar to make a phone call.  Really fucking excited, I jump up and walk up to him and say, "Hey Matt" and he responds with a "Yeah, hey".  Then I explain to him what was going on with our situation of a 4 hour drive and the inability to enter.  So he says, "Yeah, I'll see if they allow a guest list and then I'll add you guys to it so you can enter in."  So he enters and we wait.  Then, there's a van door that opens and Eleanor stumbles out.  I run up to her and tell her about our situation as well and she sympathizes, "Oh man, that really sucks,  I'm sorry you came all this way.  I'll go and talk to the bar guys too."  So we continue to wait.  After a little while Matt returns outside to talk to us, "Yeah, I'm sorry but they won't allow us to bring you guys in.  They're worried about their liquor license and stuff.  But, maybe later on you guys can slip in once some other bands are playing."  So at this point, I thank Matt for trying for us and that we'll just wait out here and hope something happens.

So we wait.

We listened to the opening act (The French Kicks) from outside the bar.  They sounded good, but they are the kind of high energy act that isn't properly portrayed on their album, so sitting outside the bar doesn't do them justice.  But after their set White Magic begins to set up and Sarah and I are just chilling outside.  It's about 10:30 at this point so we've been waiting for 2 1/2 hours outside already... thank god for the decent weather.  So then Matt walks out of the bar towards us and says, "Here, just a second."  He shuffles to the van and takes out a package of CDs.  Then tells me, "Go wait by that side door."  So, Sarah and I chill by the side door for a second and Matt comes by and opens it so we can enter!! We walk into the bar and we're really fucking ecstatic... we almost left at 8:45 because it seemed hopeless.  We stand really close and watch White Magic set up and play.  They did a great job with the first few songs, but I became a little tired of their mostly similar songs.  During the White Magic set Eleanor walked by us and said, "Hey guys, oh wait, I'm not supposed to know you."  As stupid as it sounds, little things like that were really exciting.

So then the Furnaces set up to play.  It was a 4 man band, Eleanor on vocals, Matt on keyboards/guitar/backup vocals, then one tour member on bass/keyboards, and the touring drummer.  They played all of their songs at an increased tempo so the show was a much higher energy than I previously anticipated.  They also strung their entire set together so the performace was, in reality, one long song.  They played little segments from most of Blueberry Boat and a few selections off Gallowbird's Bark.  They did an amazing job with the cohesion of all these songs.  It was very fluid and they performed it essentially flawlessly (little keyboard malfunction, but they worked around it).  After they finished Sarah and I hung around the bar to wait and get their autographs like they had said they would.  So I purchased a Gallowbird's Bark LP, a Fiery Furnaces t-shirt, and another Blueberry Boat CD for them to sign.  We talked to Eleanor and Matt a little more as they signed our crap and we thanked them for putting so much effort into allowing(sneaking) us in to the show.

Once we were ready to leave we hopped into Sarah's car and drove around aimlessly trying to reach our hotel.  We got lost for about 45 minutes.  But eventually we did reach the hotel at about 2AM... and as we walked towards the door I saw a bizarrely familiar figure.  The Fiery Furnaces were staying in the same hotel.  Eleanor sees us and exclaims, "No shit!" Then in the morning at around 11 we left the room to head home and we run into them AGAIN... they were leaving for a show in Wisconsin at the same time as us.  Never before would I have expected to meet the Fiery Furnaces but to meet them... 3 times in 1 day is just weird.

So, it was just amazing to be able to talk to the Fiery Furnaces and actually have them recognize and seek us out.  It was an amazing event.

Autographed Blueberry Boat Scan (http://www.asymm.net/images/temp/ff.jpg)

Sorry it's such a long story... I was just overly excited as I wrote it :)

HEY!  funny story.  i just drove 3+ hours to see Wilco play in Norfolk VA and the Fiery Furnaces opened!  i'd never heard them before, and they were weird as hell.  (so were wilco by the way, who on this 5th occasion of seeing them were more NOISED OUT than ever).  but anyways, when checking out of the hotel this morning, who were in the lobby, but THE FIERY FURNACES!  it was pretty strange, especially since i had just read this story and was pretty sure it was the same band.  we didnt talk to them since we had nothing to say like "good show" cause i didnt care for them and i dont like to be a liar, but i did hold the door open for the singer who seemed nice.

my concert event was less amazing since we tried to meetup with wilco at some weird bar called Hells Kitchen afterwards but since they were BLASTING pantera and metallica, it was not wilcos scene.  oh well, maybe next time.

Heh, crazy coincidence.  Too bad you weren't interested in their music, but that's okay, I bet Wilco was amazing

Anyone seen any good shows lately?

I saw Animal Collective a couple weeks ago and it really wasn't anything special. It was fun, but kind of annoying.

Best part of the night was this hipster chick who was wearing this short dress and when she would sit down I could see she was going commando. Pretty awesome.

Next Wednesday I'm going to see Battles, which should be fun in a nerdy, introverted kind of way. Already special ordered my Texas Instruments T1 calculator.

I get to see The White Stripes in October on the last day of their North American tour so it's either going to be a great show where they give it their all or they will be on auto-pilot just wanting to finish the tour.

I never understood what was so great about Interpol anyways. Their like a serious version of The Killers, which makes it even harder to take them seriously. Plus, the singer sounds like Ben Stein.

their first album's great. this is cliché by now now, but it's got a great mood about it. other than digging the general sound of it, they've got a great rhythm section. they're not overly flashy or proggy by any means, but it's nice to listen to a rock band that isn't so riff oriented or whatever. listen to "obstacle 1".

antics doesn't do a whole lot for me as a whole, but "next exit" is probably my favorite song of theirs. it lacks the atmosphere of TOTBL (mostly because of clearer and "stronger" production and a lack of slower songs like "untitled", "nyc", "hands away") but it's got some nice tunes on it.

Turn On The Bright Lights was the second album of theirs I heard after the Precipitate EP. And this was AFTER Antics had come out.

It was the song PDA that really got on my nerves, some of the worst vocals on both versions of both albums.

Plus, that bassist Carlos D always has his face plastered everywhere like a dickhead. Just don't like this bands 80's sound or overall look. Maybe if I was younger I'd get it.

My taste sucks though, so I'm probably wrong.

Just saw Battles a few minutes ago.

AMAZING. I was worried it was gonna be just to drone on parts of Mirrored, but luckily the fat was cut off (they saved all that for the encore)

I think every New Mexican hipster came out for this one. Place smelled like organic bathing soap (body odor), ramen, and chap stick.

This one chick kept elbowing me in the balls. She must have been about 4'10.

Kids kept doing the hipster dance, but I didn't care cause I was pretty buzzed by then.

How come at every show, and every downtown where the young people hang out and drink, there is always that one person trying to find their way outta town? Their like "Hey buddy! Listen, I got stuck here and I'm trying to raise some money for a greyhound bus pass! Any help?" Anyone else run into these types ALL THE TIME?

Had a pretty swell time at the Nashville Bright Eyes show last month. Gillian Welsh (sp?) and some brilliant guitarist opened and played a few songs with Connor. He's all hippie now with the long unwashed hair, etc. The Ryman (aka the original grand ole opry) is the sweetest venue in Nashvegas by far.

Some douche behind me kept screaming, "Connor, I wanna have your baby!". Other than that, no complaints.

aimee mann is cool. her between song banter is fun. she kept taking off her clothes and calling her outfit "boobalicious." she played all but one of my favorite songs. she and her band hate john mayer, jewel, and bob seger (who she called a "singing hernia"). at the end of deathly, she changed the lyrics around to a song i didn't know, but it made her keyboardist crack up. i had fun but nobody dances anymore.

no, i get really annoyed when people are constantly snapping photos of a show. i have it in my head, i'd rather not get some crappy blurred photo where she barely takes up 1/20th of the frame. besides, everybody else brings their stupid cameras, i guarantee you if you search for last night's show, by tomorrow you'll be able to see hundreds of pictures.

and she did look really good. i was fairly close, everything seemed to be holding up just fine.

Battles was phenomenal when i saw them a couple weeks ago. the keyboardist/guitarist blew me away the whole show, as did the bassist.

Junior Boys were also very good live. i'd never heard of them but they were fantastic and the music was instantly enjoyable. i found myself clapping and jumping like i'd seen them a few times before. possibly the highlight of Pitchfork for me.

Jamie Lidell was awesome but his songs kind of dissolved toward the end.

The band I most anticipate seeing again is Grizzly Bear. simply amazing.

Califone was okay, but when I see them again I definitely want to go to an indoor venue. A hot, windy outdoor concert really sucked for their music.

My summer:

Dirty Dozen Brass Band - I dunno what to say.  there aren't too many soulful acts left in this world, and I'm glad these guys are still around.  everyone was a virtuoso and they combined funk, soul, r&b, salsa, afro-cuban and gospel into this one amazing thing that is uniquely new orleans.  Everything was wild, everyone was dancing.

Squirrel Nut Zippers - I only went to see them because of high school nostalgia.  They were good but not outstanding.  I went with Lucid and got her dancing just a little bit, so mission accomplished.  Katherine Whalen and the band did a beautiful rendition of "you you you you you" for the encore and that kicked ass.

Circus Contraption - a Seattle based Circus act and rockabilly band.  The circus stuff was pretty average, but the music was amazing.  Too many smelly hippies though.

Maneja Beto - mexican traditional meets indie rock from austin.  good shit.  spun a few super tall latinas on the dance floor.  I don't remember much from that night except I went in with a little Venezuelan girl but ended up being dragged around the dance floor by this 6 foot tall mexican lady.

Alice Smith - a sultry new soul singer with a voice only to be rivaled by her booty, had a rocking band backing her up.  She was really new but completely blew everyone away.  She had an amazing range and really funny/ intimate lyrics.

Trombone Shorty and the Orleans Ave. - saw this kid last saturday night.  Nobody in his band is older than 23, but these kids tore it up.  They combined New Orleans funk with classic rock-influenced grooves.  Good idea, great execution, and a puzzling large number of single pretty girls who went by themselves.  A student of mine was a Katrina survivor, and his grandma would always tell me about the great music coming out of there, while on the verge of tears.  I shed tears for them when the band did some old timey New Orleans tunes.  They also introduced to stage this hot girl named Lilla D Moane.  She did some marvin gaye and such.  She was hot and she could sing, but not much else I guess.  Still, look up this girl if she comes to your town.

Daniel Johnston - It was awesome seeing him last night.  He wasn't in the best shape though - his hands were quivering the entire time, looked like side effects from anti-depressants to me.  His broken heart cannot be touched.  He just came out with this little backpack guitar and blew everyone away with his lyrics and singing.  Then a much better guitarist came in to back him up, doing really beautiful renditions of songs like Living Life.  The place was packed.  I had two friends who couldn't get tickets, so they came in with a felt tip marker and had one of them doing exact replicas of my hand stamp and my buddy's.  It was pretty amazing.  He only lasted about 50 minutes - did three songs by himself, three songs backed by the guitarist, two songs on the grand piano, and then a handful of quickies backed by the opening band.  It was pretty rock'n'roll but the band wasn't that good at backing him up.  He told great stories and jokes between the songs and the sets too.  It was really moving; everyone's waited for a long time to see him now, I think.  The hipsters in this city tend to be more hostile and townie-esque, but last night they did pretty good.  Nobody left without goosebumps.

For comedians I saw Louis CK, Arj Barker, and Todd Barry.  All of them hilarious.  Louis CK is a comic virtuoso though.

i saw the misfits last week. intense crowd, intense sound, but the band itself is probably more dead than the characters in their lyrics. jerry only's singing is total shit. anyway i got to meet him outside the venue while the support acts played and he's a really decent dude. and we got to hear some nice black-flag-songs since dez cadena plays guitar.

Saw Scout Niblett last night.

I LOVE going to concerts in these tiny venues where your heroes are just wandering around among the crowd while the opening bands play, instead of being hidden until showtime.  Then you get to be 4 feet from the heroes as they play, shake their hands, and thank them for the great show.  I got to do that a couple of times with Jason Molina/Magnolia Electric Co., and this show with Scout as well.  She was surprisingly beautiful in person and sounded amazing.  The opening bands, as a lot of bands do when playing live, sounded muddy with indecipherable singing.  Then Scout comes on, asks the sound guy to turn everything up as high as it can go, and sounds incredibly pure, allowing you to be enveloped in gorgeous, sharp, haunting music instead of just being blasted with sound.

(sigh)

It's difficult not to fall in love with a beautiful girl that's singing your favorite songs a few feet in front of you.  I can't wait to see her play again.

I hate the venue (Bill Graham) because the way it's set up usually creates a such a feeling of distance anxiety-ridden fear and panic.

Yeah, I really hate that place, as well. It's a cement nightmare, hollow and gigantic.

Though the Bob Dylan show I saw there last year was pretty neat.

Then I saw The Flaming Lips there and it made me miss Bimbos.

Friday is Jesus and Mary Chain, indeed.

November 5th is Hold Steady and Art Brut!

the past few months i saw tool and ryan adams.
the tool concert was awesome, the venue sucked (stay away from winston-salem, nc)
they played most shit from 10,000 days. the highlight was wings 1 & 2.
jmk has an incredible voice.  everything was note perfect like the studio versions.
im always impressed when a band recreates their sound live just like in the studio.
the fans were great.  i had really good seat (i payed alot for them) which is why i was broke,
for a while.  as for ryan adams.  it was the second best show i've ever seen (first was broken
social scene).  the show was right after he came back from the states after playing
w/the cowboy junkies.  after his "meltdown"...   he was very cool and played for nearly 3 hours.
im searching the .org for a bootleg daily.  if anyone knows where i can find
a copy of the 10/13/07 show, please holla (soundboard, no AUD.  sorry to be picky)
the venue was perfect.  its called the north charleston performing arts center. there is
not  a bad seat in the house.  we had orchestra seating.  the acoustics/sound=perfect.
highlight songs were wildflowers, bartering lines, magnolia mountain, and dear john,
(a lil secret?  dear john live is way better than the version w/norah jones...way better).

alchohol:  at the joel-lawrence colisieum in winton-salem, make sure you drink
alot in the parking lot.  they stopped serving inside right as the second set started,
during the tool show.  be warned.  in charleston alchohol was served up until encore.
and by drinks i mean beer, liqiour, and wine.  good stuff.

Just came back from the excellent double bill of Spoon and Feist. Spoon opened; coming out and plugging and tuning as the atmo music was still playing, then the music stopped, and they went right into Japanese Cigarette Case. They played for just under an hour a great deal from Ga, Ga..., tracks from Fiction and some older stuff, so it was a nice greatest hits compliation playlist. In between changing sets, a lot of Smiths tracks were played, so I was in Heaven. Then the lights went dark and Feist took the stage looking incredibly gorgeous and making hilarious banter with the audience. And she kicked some major ass as she rocked the house. She completely brought The Reminder album alive; an all-out, rockin' rendition of Sealion being the highlight.

The other week I saw Saul Williams, and he was amazing - but it was made particularly great by the way it happened.

At about 8pm I happened to realise that, because Saul had a new album out, there was a very slim chance that he might be touring in the UK sometime soon. So I went to his myspace to check. I discover that he has a gig in London THAT NIGHT that is about to start in about an hour's time about an hour away from me. I ring up the place and they've obviously sold out. I think, fuck it, this is clearly fate: I'll get down there and buy from a tout for a ridiculous price.

So I get down there and there's no one selling any spares. So I'm pissed off and bitching to the bouncer, just having a cigarette, wasting time outside. Just then this girl comes out for a smoke. The bouncer tells me that she's the daughter of the promoter and that I should ask her if she'll get me in. She does. For free. I buy her a drink in return.

Once inside, I discover it's Saul doing just spoken word stuff - which I've never see him do before. Then I realise that I have some left-over MDMA in my pocket, which I obviously take. So there I am, high as a kite, thinking Saul Williams is the deepest man ever born, and he's amazing and profound, and innovative, and HILARIOUS. Then afterwards I get to meet the man and shake his hand (he gives me a slightly weird look 'cos I'm chewing like a bastard, mumbling about "fuckin' aweshome shiit", with my eyes almost entirely closed). Then I meet some cool guys in the club and go back to their flat to smoke and be introduced to various underground London hiphop artists, till about 6am. Best Tuesday ever.

I don't know what's going on, but for some reason some really good bands are finally making their way to my neck of the woods.

The Liars and Stephen Malkmus are both coming here in the couple months and are playign the venue a block away from my place.

You guys should check out the calendar here http://launchpadrocks.com/ and tell me if there are anybody I should be checking out.

Ever since I got a 360, my music listening and movie watching has fallen off. I just smoke pot and sit on the couch playing video games all day. It's like I'm 16 again. I gotta get out of this stupid rut.

Oh, I do. But I only listen to old music and haven't found anything new because I'm to burned out to put in the work and discover. That's why I want you guys to do it for me.

On the movie front, I'm watching movies, but only stoner movies. Early Linklater type stuff. Tried watching A Woman Under The Influence but it just wasn't happening. Too complicated, man.

oh, as i mentioned in the LOST thread, i saw Joanna Newsom at BAM last week with the Brooklyn Orchestra and that was pretty amazing.  i had 2nd row center aisle seats, which i completely lucked into.  i have never before and will never again have better seats at a concert.

Just got back from seeing Jon Brion at Largo. Two words: Simply Amazing. Walking in, he just started playing the piano, and it looked and felt like he was composing something original right in front of you. The guy is a one-man band. He would start on drums with a beat, record it on a loop. While that was going on, he moved to the piano and do the same. Then he would go to the guitar, and strum and sing; getting so into it, his eyes would roll back as he was rocking out. You have to see it to witness how magical it was. He took requests and played There Might Giants's Don't Let's Start and Bowie's Life On Mars.

Later he took requests to do old standards in a non-standard way. So Somewhere Over The Rainbow was turned into a Jimi Hendrix-esque rendition. Night And Day was done in a White Stripes-esque way. Then he said, "Fuck it, Cole Porter songs the rest of the night." Anything Goes was played rock-a-billy. He ended the night by putting the lyrics of I've Got You Under My Skin to the music of Strawberry Fields Forever.

I was in awe of the man the entire time.

So, remember how I told you guys that there was a really great venue for indie music right down the street from me and how I liked going there since good bands always came and it was the only good thing this town has going for it? And also cause I could walk there and get plastered and walk home, so it was pretty much perfect?

Well, it just burned down to the ground and is no more.

saw she & him when they were here--had no idea this thread existed.  jason schwartzman jumped in for a couple songs, and they covered "bring it on home to me" and "i put a spell on you" during the encore.  really fun show, zooey is awkward (and hot), m. ward is robert downey jr.'s gay little brother but he'll melt your face.  caleb deschanel was in the audience.  i think i saw one of you give him your reel.

bummed i'm missing nick cave + cat power + spiritualized at the hollywood bowl, but i did get a ticket to my bloody valentine in new york.

I'd like to see them stick to covers... I saw Deschanel at Largo a little over a year ago... she had a beautiful voice, a great personality, and picked terrific covers... then I heard She and Him and it was bland, bland, bland. The kind of thing that gets the lovely ladies of the Target Department Store excited.

But Bring It On Home To Me and I Put A Spell On You? Sounds fun.

He's on some serious Madonna stadium tour bullshit. The Palladium is NOT a venue I would ever pay that much to see anyone at...under any circumstance. I love you Tom but I'll stay home and watch Domino and wish I was there with ya and then get pissed that I'm watching fucking Domino...sure I could watch Coffee & Cigarettes, but I'm not gonna. I will pay $20 to see Ladytron and Datarock at said Palladium.

Absolutely.

Worth every goddamned dollar.

I saw him, in the middle of the afternoon, in an amphitheater filled with folks either more interested in John Mayer, or getting impatient waiting for Metallica and Tom Waits commanded every one of those motherfuckers respect. YOu could almost hear a pin drop. The frightened fled to the beer tents, and everyone else watching in awe.

He really transformed that place into something special. He used floorboards, his voice, guitar, and piano to create a world I didn't want to leave.

He told jokes and stories, and lies.

He was amazing.

I'm considering a road trip across many states to see him... so if you've got the opportunity to see him in your very own county.... or anywhere near it. Do it. Do it. Do it.

Tuesday we went to see Destroyer because we were going to miss him during the festival.  It also put us in the concert going mood.  Like his albums, 40% of the show was great.  Then came the festival.  It began with Fleet Foxes and Fleet Foxes were definitely one of the real treasures of the whole weekend (they would play again when The National showed up late).  If you haven't seen pictures of the Gorge (why would have you have really) and you are going to read this post you should take a peek and see what an amazing view was just behind all these bands, by the way.  But so it began with Fleet Foxes who were amazing.  Then I think we went and watched some UCB for about an hour.  There were mic problems that made things awkward and painful (me being sensitive).  We saw Beirut.  I'm not a fan.  Then we took a break and bought t-shirts and whatnot until The National, catching the tail end of Ozomatli's set and a bit of Joshua Morrison's because he was by the merch table.  The National didn't show and Fleet Foxes played again.  They were amazing.  The National not showing until later kind of fucked up the day's schedule, for us.  The New Pornographers were next and they were a real fulfillment of expectations for me but Stephanie thought they didn't sound as good as on their cds.  We skipped M.I.A. (her decision...) to watch some ASSSSCAT.  The mic problems had been fixed and everyone was really funny.  Then we saw The National who had shown up, and they were okay for three or four songs.  We went to watch some Modest Mouse which turned out to be a good idea because everyone was going bonkers and dancing and they played that Float On song and literally (perhaps) all the people there, all these thousands of people, were dancing.  That was a great feeling.  We climbed the hill during the song, surrounded by dancing people, to see The Breeders.  The Breeders were one of my favorite live acts.  The night ended with R.E.M. - who totally blew Stephanie and I away.  Now we're on this minor R.E.M. kick.  The next day we went we decided to stand up front all day to have close spots for Flaming Lips.  First was Dyme Def.  We ate our food during their set.  Yeasayer was the first good band of the day but they seemed kind of out of place outdoors, and following them was Matt Costa who is a professional musician for reasons I can't ascertain.  But when The Hives played next everyone was reeled back into the festival because of their limitless energy.  Great performers The Hives are.  All that energy was on standstill during Built to Spill.  Built to Spill is a great band but a perfect example of a disadvantage of a music festival lineup is Built to Spill following The Hives.  When I thought about Built to Spill's set later, like driving home, is when I really appreciated it for what it was.  It was okay.  Rodrigo Y Gabriela brought a ton of energy as well, which led into Flight Of The Conchords, who are seriously funny.  Then an entirely different direction with The Mars Volta (the set actually started crazy and built my enthusiasm but that died off).  The Flaming Lips played last and they brought with them a memorable, intimate and exciting show.  They also had women dance naked.

It was a lot of fun but House Of Blues needed to make that shit LOUD! It was cute to see a number of the metal fans there that didn't seem to really get any of the irony of the show but there was also this great communal vibe since many different people were there for many different reasons but everyone got what they came for. I did see room for improvement in actually involving the audience in what could essentially be a live episode. All in all I had a great time...I think I was the only person drinking Grey Goose and tonic at that show.

i did. saw the flaming lips live for the first time in a amusement park in copenhagen called 'tivoli'. unfortunately the volume of the show had to be restricted due to the place is outdoors and the neighbors would be angry or something. anyways, it was a fantastic show.

next up, two mogwai shows in november.

The Hold Steady about a month ago.

Fucking amazing. Superlative superlative superlative.

I've got some shows coming up, but I probably won't see anything that good until November...

Hold Steady and Drive-By Truckers. Collision of awesomeness. If you enjoy beer and guitars, and that billing finds it's way to your town, do catch it.

Frank Black earlier tonight.

Dude was on autopilot. But Frank Black's autopilot rocks harder and with more conviction than most bands can muster with all their youthful energy magnified and combined.

Bizarre crowd, though. It was a six dollar show at a horse track in Southern California. Most of the people there were sunburnt and drunk as hell yelling out Pixies songs.

Yeah I saw Frank Black a couple weeks ago and it was pretty sweet.  First time I ever saw a legend perform with nothing but a guitar.  very intimate and very good.

I recorded a taste:

Went to redeem my beer bottles for $ cash $ money $ at the local recycling center this afternoon and who do I see in the terminal next to me? You guessed it on your first try. Thurston Moore. Asked him if he wanted to come back to my place and jam in the basement but he politely declined. Could have been an awesome show.

Man man opening for Okkervil River as a sideshow for ACL Fest (which I'm skipping this year)

First time I ever saw Man Man was opening for OR, right before Six Demon Bag came out.  It was in a tiny room and I was right up front.  Now it's a larger venue and they're both bigger bands and I've seen them individual at least six times since, but I'm still super excited about the show.

No shit! You weren't kidding. Mogwai had my ears ringing at least three times more than NIN did. NIN was excellent. Hadn't seen them in a loooong time. Heavy on the Teeth/Zero/Slip albums; not much love for Fragile, but the Machine/Broken/Spiral songs were the showstoppers. The lights & screens displays were amazing to watch. Truly made the concert feel interactive. Trent's comment on the election: During Hand That Feeds, had a photo of Bush slowly morph into McCain.

My first time seeing Mogwai, and they were incredible. The Wiltern is a relatively small, intimate venue, so I had a great spot. It also meant that I was in the middle of and, thus, blasted by, all the speakers. But Batcat sounded so fucking good live. Had a great crowd of fans, and they played a great set. I was also impressed with Fuck Buttons. They were fascinating to watch.

Fuck... even captured in a minute long cell phone clip, that performance sent a little chill down my spine.

I saw him with full band, performing only the last two Black Francis albums. The band was tight and FB was a total professional. No pandering, no filler, no nonsense... just an hour and a half of loud, fast rock and roll. No Pixies songs, though, you lucky duck.

Just saw Built To SPill do Perfect From Now On. Real good stuff. And I was just reading about Neil Young's band on this tour... should be a fine show. MBV and Malkmus ain't too shabby either, of course.

October and November is always a real good stretch for shows. I've got The Hold Steady/Drive-By Truckers, Randy Newman, RObyn Hitchcock performing I Often Dream of Trains, and whatever Neil Young's Bridge School lineup is to look forward to.

Also the best free festival to look forward to all year: http://www.strictlybluegrass.com/

I'm terrible at remembering set lists and it doesn't get any better when you've been drinking. I do remember The Hollows giving me goosebumps like I never thought possible.

Now for some pictures from Ratatat(which I did attend) and Mogwai/Fuck Buttons(I ended up not going to this show but since I bought tickets the venue still sent me these photos.) I am still very very pissed about not seeing Mogwai but if you feel the need to make me feel worse, please go right ahead.

oh man, sorry if i pour salt in thee wound but here's what mogwai felt about the gig:

"we arrive in dallas to the natural symphony of hot storm rain on our pale island skin. the hurricane is flirting with us but isn't really up for going all the way. we find out that one of the guys who works here as crew was there when dimebag darrell from pantera was shot dead at a concert in ohio. indeed this guy we met was shot 4 times in the leg too but survived. a legend no less. the theatre we play is old and has just been bought over a year ago by new folk who are extremely nice, good luck to them. i hear it was a porn cinema for 3 months too, by the way. we go and get some breakfast at what is supposed to be a legendary burger joint where i opt for coffee (which comes tepid) instead of the "cheeseburger salad" (???) and the rest of the boys get stuff they don't like either, all served lukewarm. so i get dropped off at the hotel and i'm told i can go for a swim there so i get my trunks on and walk down to the "pool". it's shaped like a brand new avant garde letter of the alphabet and is thus completely useless for swimming in so i mope back up to the room, get washed and wait until i can get a lift back to the venue. we soundcheck and do the usual stroke inducing boring wait for the show to begin. i am having trouble remembering if this was a good gig or not.....did someone stagedive? i think they might have (i write this stuff a good few days after the event and my memory has more holes in it than cummings' and braithwaite's jeans combined). so, the wind picks up a little and we get on our merry way to the wonderment of atlanta, georgia. it's a long drive but patrick bane, our super-driver will get us into atlanta by 2 or 3 pm tomorrow."

don't worry though, i'm sort of sure they will return to your area next year. if not, please don't shoot me because my body aches after two hours paintball session last night.

edit:

here's the show uploaded at archive.org which i haven't heard yet:

I can just picture the drummer looking out into that Dallas crowd, not seeing my face and then clutching his chest and struggling through the tears just to finish that show. not long, surprisingly enough.  but it could be that my brain's adjusted to my now irrevocably damaged hearing and now considers it normal.  i tried to go as long as i could without the ear plugs because it was so blissful being blasted by them.  18 minute "you made me realise" was transcendent.  one of the best (if not loudest) shows E V E R.

i went saturday and sundar to the acl...never been to austin before, i thought it was great, i gotta admit thought, the grinch part of my personality has a hard time adjusting to so much good vibes from strangers. i like it rough, you know...

saturday:

josé gonzáles was ok but i was too far away to actually enjoy it.

drive by truckers was fun but it's not my cup of tea.

man man: i was already on my fourth beer and my first joint so it was the perfect moment and these guys owned it. the audience were divided between those jumping to the music and those watching with a smile on their faces, stunned with the crazy shit the band was doing up there. every song felt perfect.

erykah badu: although i roll my eyes everytime some celebrity talks about how cool the zapatista movement is, the show itself was great. i never stopped bouncing.

nachito herrera all stars: i danced like a mad man to these guys.

beck was INCREDIBLE. there was a lot of energy to his show, despite him being still the whole time. the songs from modern guilt, specially chemtrails, sounded amazing, maybe with the exception of the title track itself. loved to hear midnite vultures stuff in there. wished he had played tropicalia or something from mutations.

sunday:

okerville river, yeah i could see them rocking out the house but i was midway through their stage because i wanted to be near when the raconteurs started. anyway i know some people get offended by this, but i put okervill in the 00's category of "faggy rock". i don't know how else to explain it, but it's getting tiresome.

the raconteurs were aesome from moment one. jack white looks pretty bad though, he seems to have health problems or something. i only listened to five songs and went running to catch gnarls barkley, and they were great too. this was the hard moment for me during this thing, to have to get away from one great show to another.

the big surprise for me was galactic. people were insane over them. they nailed every beat, every song, every little thing. my plan was to leave early to get a nice spot for foo fighters but i couldn't. they were too good.

foo fighters was foo fighters. funny and appropiate to leave the fest in a high. loved the drum solo and the triangle solo...

i'm seeing antony at the johnsons at the Walt Disney Concert Hall on the 14th, and then seeing the Flaming Lips on the 18th  with a bunch of other bands, Nine Inch Nails and The Kooks and Stone Temple Pilots. It's going to be intense.

I performed at FFFFest so I got an Artists wristband (backstage and free booze) which made the festival that much better.

Got to say I wasn't really into deerhoof.  I think they are just not my cup of tea it would seem.

national was good, but not as good as the other times I've seen them, which sucks because they said that would be thier last show for a good while.

Dan Deacon I only caught some of because he decided to take twenty extra minutes to set up, which ate into his set a lot.

Pretty sure that was at KK's request since he was Kool Keith AS Dr. Octagon there.
He played some of the first DO album, which made me pretty happy.

Tim and Eric was maybe my favorite part of the whole festival though.  Islands were great too.

I did "enjoy" how the stages seemed to go in no particular order and 2 was particularly out of the way. Keeping Austin weird all the way down to randomly numbered and placed stages. It was also so very Austin that the one BB-Q stand had four vegan options and only two non-vegan options. The road is truly paved with marijuana in that town.

I do like to mix business with asshole. Nah, I'm just visiting some friends and enjoying the city. I saw CC not too long ago and it was a crowd of maybe 150 and I had just the right amount to drink, so it was a great show to me. We'll see if they've stepped up their game since then.

Saw Fucked Up last night with a friend. It was a lot of fun. I never go out on work nights, but I'm trying to make a conscience effort to get out more whenever a band comes around. I usually never go, then end up regretting it.

I was pondering the lack of concerts I've attended in a while, and almost instantly a bunch swooped into my radar.  My choices are among:

Goblin Cock
Pelican
Crystal Castles
Ratatat
Simian Mobile Disco

Are there any particular live shows among these that I cannot afford to miss?
Title: Re: Anyone seen any good shows lately?

I've only hear Ratatat and Crystal Castles. Or is it Crystal Antlers I heard? Maybe Crystal Stilts?

Whatever, regardless, it's always good to get out and support anyone you're interested in when they come to town, but If you could only choose two, I'd choose those two only because they're the only ones I heard.

I always try and buy some merch but usually by the end of the night I've spent all my money on booze. :o(

I bought an awesome Fucked Up cassette a couple weeks ago. It was all I had enough money for.

Dave Rawlings Machine has had a pretty extended residency at Largo for the last couple months and I've been attempting to catch them as often as I can.

For those unfamiliar, DRM is Rawlings on lead and Gillian Welch doing backup - with guest accompaniment for the likes of Jenny Lewis, Jon Brion, Benmont Tench, the Watkins Family Sebastian Steinberg, and others. Usually two hours of Rawlings originals and inspired covers. If you have the chance to catch them (and you're into that sort of thing) do so. It's rare, and beautiful, and fucking exciting.

For the Northern California inclined, they're playing next week at the Great American in SF and the Rio in Santa Cruz. I'm going to both and they are both going to be fucking amazing.

^ I would have loved to see that. I'll have to catch DRM next time they come to the Southwest.

I saw No Age on Saturday. They played in this tiny little suite. It was like a dentists office. It could hold about twenty people but we had it packed 70 deep. I had to leave midway through for two reason. 1) there was no booze. 2) 70 hipsters/hippies packed shoulder to shoulder filled the little bit of fresh air we had in the place with the foulest stench EVER. I think I was surrounded by hte 5 smelliest mofo's ever. Like sweat and ass drenched with sun dried mayonnaise. AWFUL.

When I walked into the House Of Blues on the sunset strip on March 21st after a devestatingly boring saturday, I was a bit, well....apprehensive. I held some reservations because most tribute bands are well, lukewarm. but I had heard that these guys (Led zepagain) were as close to the real thing that you will ever see in your life. I have only been to the HOB on sunset once before and that was only briefly for my job. Its velvetly curtains and three bars that ring around the stage like prowling wolves around a dead baby bird carcass is quite interesting. I was unaware at the revelation, the spiritual experience, the musical intensity I was going to feel that night.

I thought the concert started at 8:00PM and ended at 11:00PM because that was what was on my ticket. I got there at 7:42PM and in line 5 minutes later, worried as all hell. You know me. So, I thought it was going to be at the most three hours of music. Boy, was I ever wrong.  Thank goodness for that. The concert I was told by the bartender as I ordered a jack and sprite. 'What Mikey?!?!" Yes, a jack daniels and a sprite. They didn't have seagrams. Stopped serving it.

Well, I guess Led Zepagain is only going to play one hour of the setlist of the legendary '77 world tour, since I knew there was going to be a doors cover band (Peace Frog). I relaxed and took a sip from my drink and waited. After a few moments, I went down and struck up a conversation with a couple of groups of people. One group was two ladies that were around my age, casual dressed. Upstanding sexy. Naturally beautiful. Naturally they weren't from Los Angeles but Pasadena. And so (yet again) naturally they were NOT single. The second group was a noted group of heavy hard rockers. They go to any and all rock concerts. After a chat with them, the lights dimmed and it was time for Peace Frog, the doors tribute band.

Peace Frog had the attitude and the music cued up for the experience. They had a hell of a set and he lead singer playing Morrison had his personality to a T, drinking Beer, screaming and cursing. Hating and getting off on the audience. He didn't pull out his dick but he did everything else. They didn't do any of the doors hit singles though...

Peace Frog's set closed and at 10:05PM Led Zepagain took the stage and opened with saying "Are you ready for over two hours of Led Zeppelin music. They rocked the fuckin house. It was the best concert I've ever been to in my life. That includes elton john and billy joel, rolling stones, bob dylan, kid rock, and the fucking beach boys. They had the look, the power, ingenuity, the heart, the skill and the energy of Led zeppelin in their seventies prime.  Oh fuck, it was wonderful. I've never felt more at home with the people there than I did in a long time. They ended their set at 12:37 and my god it was wonderful.

The set list for the night (I believe) was:
"The Song Remains the Same" (Page, Plant)
"The Rover" (intro)/"Sick Again" (Page, Plant)
"Nobody's Fault but Mine (Page, Plant)
"In My Time of Dying" (Page, Plant, Bonham, Jones)
"The Ocean"
"Since I've Been Loving You" (Page, Plant, Jones)
"No Quarter" (Page, Plant, Jones)
"Ten Years Gone" (Page, Plant)
"The Battle of Evermore" (Page, Plant)
"Going to California" (Page, Plant)
"Black Country Woman" (Page, Plant) / "Bron-Yr-Aur Stomp" (Page, Plant, Jones)
"White Summer"
"Black Mountain Side" (Page)
"Kashmir" (Bonham, Page, Plant)
"Out on the Tiles" (intro)
"Over the Top"/"Moby Dick" (Page, Jones, Bonham)
"Guitar Solo" (Page) / "We Gonna Groove"
"Achilles Last Stand" (Page, Plant)
"Stairway to Heaven" (Page, Plant)
"Whole Lotta Love" (Bonham, Dixon, Jones, Page, Plant)
"Rock and Roll" (Page, Plant, Jones, Bonham)

Got tickets for Pitchfork Festival this summer. Went to see Crystal Castles last night in Dallas and the doors were supposed to open at 8pm and they made everyone wait outside until after 10 before canceling the show. I know a guy that works at the venue and apparently they were just too fucked up to go on. Looks like success may have finally gone to their head, or up their nose, or in their veins.

*Update...the venue at the Crystal Castles show refunded everyone's money AND gave out a free ticket to an upcoming show of your choice...so I got a free ticket to see Grizzly Bear in June because C.C. are a couple of fuck-ups.*

I just went to this thing here in Oklahoma called the Norman Music Festival last night. I played a show at 3pm to about 250+ people and spent the rest of the day getting shit-faced and chatting it up with Honus Honus from Man Man and Kevin Barnes from Of Montreal. Of Montreal were alright. Not the biggest fan but man man was fucking incredible. Wasn't sure how their sound would translate to main-stage epic-ness but it totally did and was totally amazing, inspiring, magical. I ran into barnes on the street and he showed me some of his pictures on his iphone that he had been taking around the place. Nice fella. In the hospitality tent i ate brisket with friends in bands like the Evangelicals and Other Lives. I did a video interview shortly after our set and i'm embarrassed to say that i was extremely hammered for this and i probably look like a tool but between this in Norman, and another festival called D-Fest in Tulsa...oklahoma fuckin rocks.

Who was it? I saw a few comedians while i was there.

just saw tv on the radio last night.
great show.

a method, the wrong way, wolf like me, staring at the sun were the best.
shitty sound though. this venue has always sucked for sound. in 2002 i saw modest mouse there and i remember issac brock screaming at the sound guy "i'm going to fucking kill you."

it was a good time but i still kinda wish i woulda saved my thirty bucks.

I saw them on Friday night.  The sax guy was my friend from back East so I saved my 30 bucks.  I thought I was gonna get to hang with the band but they packed up immediately and left for portland right after.
my favorite was Crying.
and my venue had shitty sound as well, everything sounded echo-y, no matter where you stood, at the Fox Theater.  I saw M. Ward there the weekend before and K'naan a few months before that, all the same.

Live Nation nixes some ticket fees
Surcharges dropped on Wednesdays this summer
Associated Press

Live Nation Inc., the world's largest concert promoter, is opening the summer season with a promotion every Wednesday that eliminates some ticket fees, the surcharges that have caused fans to revile its soon-to-be merger partner, Ticketmaster Entertainment Inc.

Live Nation is scrapping fees for U.S. amphitheater lawn seats this summer in a 24-hour sale on its Web site starting at 12:01 a.m. in every local time zone on Wednesday. Fans will save around $9 to $12 on a ticket that typically costs $20 to $25.

Artists playing at the 43 Live Nation venues covered by the promotion include Aerosmith, Coldplay, Phish, Nickelback and Kid Rock. Five million tickets are up for grabs this Wednesday.

The company plans to continue the promotion, though on a smaller scale, every Wednesday this summer.

"We know people hate fees," said Live Nation's chief executive of global music, Jason Garner. "We just want to have one day to say to fans, 'We've heard you loud and clear and appreciate your support. Escape and enjoy a great show."'

Despite the recession, the company said in May that ticket sales for its summer concerts were ahead of last year's pace. Still, there's room to sell many more tickets. Live Nation says about 40% of all concert seats go empty. And for a typical summer concert, more than half of the 13,000 lawn tickets at a 20,000-capacity venue are left unsold.

Ticket surcharges usually help pay the ticket-selling company -- often Ticketmaster -- and the venue owner. The artists typically collect most of their revenue from the base price of the ticket.

By launching its own ticketing Web site in January, Live Nation became able to cut the surcharge in hopes of making that money up in other ways from people coming to the venues it owns.

Live Nation's move to sell its own tickets also threatened to take a 15% bite out of Ticketmaster's annual sales. But the companies announced merger plans in February. This proposed combination of the largest ticket-seller and largest concert promoter sparked an antitrust investigation that is still ongoing. The companies expect their merger to be completed in the second half of the year, assuming regulatory approval.

Ticketmaster experimented with its own kind of no-fee tickets starting last year when it baked the surcharges into the price of tickets for Eagles concerts.

After the merger, Garner says, the combined company might adopt the promotional formula Live Nation is trying.

"If it works, everybody benefits," he said.

TV On The Radio @ Central Park Summerstage

I bought these tickets 3 months ago thinking "wow, June.  Summer!  That will be great." But the night of the show it was 50 degrees and pouring rain.  I hoped it would be cancelled but it wasn't so we stood in the rain, got completely soaked and I just kept wishing I could enjoy the show because they were awesome.  Luckily they're playing Prospect Park in Brooklyn in August so I get a do-over.  I hope it doesn't fucking rain.

i went to Cinematic Titanic at the Inwood in Dallas on Saturday.
there was some music performed so it qualifies barely for this thread.

unfortunately, the sound was horrible so i didn't hear any of the movie's dialog and missed a good deal of the riffing.

oh, and i did get to see a local Eisley acoustic show with Max Bemis of Say Anything as well (he's married to one of them).

someone else here knows their music but i don't recall who.

I went to this (http://calendar.walkerart.org/event.wac?id=5005) tonight, and it was amazing.

It went like this. Solid Gold at 4:30. Local band, sort of has a dark electronic/psychadelic feel, good melodies. I listened to their album a few times. They were pretty good live. Yeasayer was next at 5:45. I liked them more than I expected to. Very odd band with some fascinating instrumentation, but I can only get into a few of their songs. Calexico was next at 7:00. Not a big fan, but I loved the trumpets/cornets (and not much else). Their music is conventional mariachi/western stuff. Nothing too exciting. The frontman being embarassingly full of himself did not help. He did these "I'm the man" hand gestures and quasi-dance moves. He also tried to do several call/response bits with the crowd, all of which failed thoroughly. Solid Gold and Yeasayer were much better.

Then, at 8:30, as dusk begins to descend on Minneapolis, The Decemberists start a full contiguous performance of The Hazards of Love. Let me tell you, they have come a long long way since Austin. They are precise and have a metric crapton of energy. The vocal performances are album-quality. I think it helped that the sound engineering was pretty much perfect throughout the day. Everything was very well balanced. (I should have yelled some compliments at the sound guy since I was standing next to the sound tent, but I didn't want to distract him, and I'm not good at yelling.) The mics were good, which was not the case at SXSW. Possibly the biggest difference, however, was Chris Funk's electric guitar playing. At SXSW, he was shy, and his guitar was awkwardly quiet. Tonight, he was playing like a rock star. He has seriously developed some skill with that instrument. During some of the noisy parts, he was clawing at the guitar like a madman, creating some seriously unique sounds. The songs rocked more than they do on the album, which was entirely appropriate for the live context. It's like they spread a delicious layer of rock-flavored jelly on top of, well, everything except "Isn't It a Lovely Night." The chemistry between the crowd and the band was remarkable throughout. It became obvious that the vast majority of the audience was there for the Decemberists. After Hazards, they did a half hour of old songs including a crowd participation piece that totally worked. They ended with a rocking Shara Worden / Becky Stark duet of "Crazy On You." (Yes, really.) The classic rock power vocals are to be expected from Shara Worden, but I had no idea Becky Stark could sing like that. The whole thing blew me away. Rock The Garden is supposed to be a 4-band package, but at the end of the night it felt like 3 bands had opened for the Decemberists. They stole the show in a more show-stealing fashion than I thought was possible.

Last night I saw Bill Callahan at the Parish.  Holy shit!

I've seen him a few times and it's always been good, but this was absolutely amazing.  It should have been a disaster... it was really hot so he kept asking if they could lower the lights and for some reason the light go crazy when that happens and they turn on and off at random.  There was also a drunk d-bag next to us screaming things out and flailing around during even the slow songs.  Those things didn't really end up mattering though.

I hope he keeps touring with strings.  I think he was so into them that he just put more into what he was giving.

The set list was so great that I wanted him to play a song I didn't like just so I could go to the bathroom.

Two incredible Jon Brion performances in the Bay Area last weekend.

The first opening for Of Montreal. Some rock solid originals, sprinkled with some mighty fine covers of Billie Holiday, My Bloody Valentine, The Beatles, Screamin' Jay Hawkins, and Daft Punk.

The next night at Cafe Du Nord... further affirmation that, as many times as I see him, he still comes up with ways to amaze and move me. Covers of Cole Porter, Roxy Music, Emitt Rhodes, and Brian Eno.... along with some exceptionally chosen originals.

His sets now include a video projector and a host of video clips that he layers, loops, and manipulates live while scoring. He played an old Felix The Cat cartoon, scored it and merged that score into an almost ragtime version of Lithium.

Finished with a epic and devastatingly beautiful cover of Voices, by Cheap Trick, accompanied by old footage and sounds of a theramin being played and a mariachi band playing a song about longing and loss of a former lover who was far away.

My girlfriend captured a couple videos throughout the night... something I can never bring myself to do during a show, but appreciate watching when someone else can. I'll post 'em when she posts 'em.

All you LA folks who haven't been to see him, or haven't seen him in a while, should find your way out to Largo at the Coronet and see what he's up to nowadays.

Saw the Decemberists week before last at Marymoor Park, outside Seattle.  Great venue, fantastic show.  Andrew Bird opened, along with a band called Blind Pilot, of whom I was not familiar.

The Decemberists played the entire Hazards of Love album (which is positively epic live), walked off stage for ten minutes, then as half the crowd is filing out, Colin Meloy comes back on stage and goes, "So... we're gonna play a bunch more songs."  And then they played for another hour or so.  Great rapport with the crowd, they played songs other than the obvious ones you would expect, and they threw in a badass cover of Heart's "Crazy on You" with the two female singers from Hazards of Love.  Good times.

So, the ACL festival was this weekend and because of a number of factors (including the weakest lineup they've had in a long time), I decided not to go this year.  But I did catch a couple shows that came through because of the festival.

The first was Broken Social Scene.  The best thing about this show was that it was a free show put on at an old power plant here in Austin.  It's a really cool building and they lit it up real fancy.  It looked great and BSS was really great despite being stripped down (for them).

That would have been the highlight of the weekend, but I also just got back from seeing Bon Iver.
I'm not exaggerating when I say that was one of the best... if not THE best concert I've ever seen.
Because of some luck (and a friend who works for the ticket processor, I was able to get front-row center tickets at the paramount (which is a great venue for this type of show... amazing acoustics).  I'm sure that played a small part in how much I enjoyed the show, but it really was the band.
I kept wanting to pull out my iPhone to video some of it just to prove how amazing they were, but I couldn't bring myself to put anything between me and the band.  Unbelievable.  Seriously... even if you only kind of like this band, if you get a chance, see them live.

anyone else go to the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival this past weekend? It was amazing!
highlights:

Steve Martin,
Aimee Mann,
Billy Bragg,
Galactic,
Robert Earl Keen,
Dr. Dog,
Emmylou Harris and Robert Plant!

i plan on going to this thing every year from here on out...

also, Dr. Dog rocked the shit so hard that i ended up driving to Santa Cruz to check them out again last nite with Jeffery Lewis... i recommend that no one pass up one of their shows, awesome band.

Yep. Missed some of the artists you mentioned, but caught Okkervil River, Old 97's, Nick Lowe, Gillian Welch/David Rawlings, Robyn Hitchcock, Billy Bragg, Aimee Mann, and Neko Case.

Pretty fun sets by everyone. Welch brought out Old Crow Medicine Show and Emmylou Harris for a cover of "The Weight", 97's did a couple duets with Jon Langford and Exene Cervenka.

U2 at the Rose Bowl. Pretty awesome. Didn't blow me away or leave quite the impression that the Zoo TV tour did (the last time I saw them), but they still make the concert interactive and make a huge venue seem intimate.

Just saw Why? and Serengeti and Polyphonic in Texas a few hours ago. Just got back (its 5am) felt like i had to share with someone. My bandmate sent me with the mission to document all the equipment and sound techniques they were using and strangely enough i got more out of serengeti than i did why. Why has turned into this badass rock band. much different than when i saw them 3 years ago. Still a rocking, badass, awesome show...

Saw Dirty Projectors on Saturday. They were incredible. They sound so much better live than on the cd, and when considering how technically difficult some of their music is, it's just amazing to watch. The only annoying thing: hipsters who think they can sing along. Not to this, girls. Not to this.

Random Thoughts:
I saw them open for Jarvis Cocker a few years ago and thought they were one of the most obnoxious bands I'd ever seen.
At that same show one of the girls in the band threw her beer at a jock heckling them.
I like the new album okay but when I saw them open for TV On The Radio a few months ago still thought they sounded pretty bad.
Stillness is The Move was really underwhelming live.
The touring singer looks like Rose Byrne.
When I was jamming with some dudez in Brooklyn last year I saw the DP's on the street because their practice space was prob near ours.

Dudez?

One of the girls told people to quit smoking or else they wouldn't be able to sing. They were far from annoying other than that. Why do you think they're obnoxious? They were fucking pros when we saw them, completely destroyed the crowd. That weird vocal thing they've been doing is just mind-blowing. And they were so technically on their game, way better in fact than their recordings, I can't imagine them actually playing badly. I'm surprised you think they're bad live. Their music comes alive in person.

I just went to this thing here in Oklahoma called the Norman Music Festival last night.

So they're doing this again this year in Oklahoma in April and i just found out I'll be playing the main stage (probably sometime in the afternoon) and later in the day The Dirty Projectors will be playing the same stage.

Fuck. Yes.

Just got back from seeing Why?. They were awesome as usual, but what made it special was the fact that Andrew Broder (Fog) was touring with them, which in turn meant that they were able to close with Hymie's Basement's motherfuckin' "21st Century Pop Song": one of my favourite tracks period, and one which i never thought I'd get to hear live. And as a direct result I am pretty damn happy right now.

I realise this won't mean much to many, but I know there are some Yoni fans who will at least will know what I'm talking about.

This beat is so bonkers. One of my favorite songs of all-time. Anytime anyone questions Yonis MC skills I put this on. Then I put on Crushed Bones, then Good Friday, then I get the apology in writing.

Broder did the repeat backing vocals for the "Our-font-will-crush-your-font" section. Awesome, awesome, awesome. Thanks for entertaining my enthusiasm guys!

So this is kinda of a LA-only recommendation, but is really a suggestion to anyone with a bit of initiative.

Last week I saw the Paul F. Tompkins show at Largo. I've caught it with the semi-frequency of anyone who doesn't live in LA, but ends up there more often than not. It's a great show... two hours of sketches, stand-up and music that, even when it doesn't have you laughing, will at least have you smiling. It's "pleasant" in the best sense of the word.

Last weeks show included a "book club" sketch involving Ed Helms, a performance by the cute (but boring) Watkins Family, Tompkins singing "All These Things That I've Done" with full band, and a few covers of Pogues songs with full band - including Ed Helms on Banjo and "Weird" Al Yankovic on accordion. It was the kind of variety show people rarely do and, with even more rarity, ever pull off successfully.

He performs this show every month and, with the exception of traditionally closing with a performance of "Danny Boy", barely repeats bits or guests. If you're in LA or near LA, you should go see it.

If you're not in LA, and have an interest in seeing PFT, you should read this:

http://paulftompkins.com/blog_detail.php?id=47

Chances are, if you have any interest in Tompkins, you're probably already aware of this but if not... it's a pretty respectable idea:

Basically, if you can start (or join) a Facebook group promising to attend a PFT show in your area, he will book one. This will make for a more committed rewarding experience for both him and the audience, because you both know you're there to see the show and not just for something to do with your evening. It connects fans with artist, and fans with other fans. It's a great idea that more people - comedians or musicians - should attempt.

Tompkins is the kind of comedian that has yet to really be properly represented in his television appearances. If you've seen him on Best Week Ever, or on stand-up specials, you might be able to appreciate that he's clever and has an enjoyable presence... but seeing him live is a completely different experience full of  stream-of-thought rants, failed jokes, and absurd little moments that usually don't get to be represented on TV. See him if you can, you'll like it.

Apologies if any of this is too long or unnecessary. I'm tired and drunk and, at least for the moment, this seemed worth sharing.

No question that Paul is playing at the top of his game.  Best stand-up working now.

Just to be clear, the Facebook 300 thing is just for his stand-up, not the PFT show.

Our theater is sponsoring bringing him to Austin in June.  Should be a great show.

Yeah, I should have properly articulated the difference between the two... either way, PFTs stand-up is just as great.

Like you said, "best stand-up working now".

No he went backstage with them. The joke was that he gets BJs anywhere as long as it's in the back/hidden area of a location. The same joke was made when he quoted kotte's classic confession about the fellatio that almost took place in the woods behind a big rock, he said it would be the name of his next album and i said it would also be the location of his next BJ. The running gag to me has never been that he just gets random BJs at any time, but that they've all been closely linked and in a way determined by location. He HAS to find a back room like superman has to find a phone booth, or in lieu of a back room a suitably exclusive area far away from the main focus in whatever context. Such that the woods and especially behind a rock becomes the back room to the main urban front desk/stage. So yeah, zing.

I went to go see Shearwater at the Parish (My favorite place to see a band in Austin) over the weekend and they were great and everything (I always prefer their live stuff to their albums), but the opener, Wye Oak was incredible.  Bought two of their albums immediately after.

Two piece band... great singer/guitarist chick and her drummer who plays the drums and Keyboards at the same time.

Rahsaan Roland Kirk was blind, too.  And just now when I wikipedia'd him to spellcheck his name I read this:

QuoteAt times he would play a number of these horns at once, harmonising with himself, or sustain a note for lengthy durations by using circular breathing, or play the flute through his nose.  A number of his instruments were exotic or homemade

He's only playing 4 songs off the new LP, (Pow Pow, I Can Change, Drunk Girls and All I Want).  He's playing 5 off SoS and 6 off his first LP(!)  That seems pretty backwards to me cause I REALLY would've liked to hear Dance Yrself Clean.  (Also: not playing North American Scum or Watch The Tapes.  :( )

I know it's his last tour and everything, and he wants to play the fan favourites, but I can't imagine "Dance Yrself Clean" being anything but FUCKING INCREDIBLE live. Really hope he plays it during his set at Sasquatch! this weekend, though i doubt it since it's a pretty long song and they only gave LCD Soundsystem an hour long set  :yabbse-undecided: But if he closes with (or even plays) "New York I Love You, But You're Bringing Me Down" I'll totally lose my shit.

Oh and Sasquatch! is going to be awesome, btw.

So, okay, Sasquatch.

This was the best weekend of the year, possibly of my whole life. There were ton of campground adventures and shenanigans, but lets stick to the music.

Saturday:

Mumford & Sons: They were great, play with incredible energy. Never seen a guy rock that hard on a banjo before. I know alot of people can't stand these guys, and i was lukewarm on them before, but this performance sold me on them.

Portugal. The Man: So talented, also amazing energy.

Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros: Total singalong fest. Really fun, though the spoken word part of "Home" was super awkward.

Broken Social Scene: Now we're getting serious. Probably the most talented group of musicians I've seen. The new stuff off Forgiveness Rock Record sounded fantastic. Closed with "Meet Me in the Basement" which is guaranteed to be a staple of future live shows.

The National: THEY FUCKING KILLED IT. This was the best setlist i could (realistically) expect. Played the best stuff of High Violet ("Afraid of Everyone," "Bloodbuzz Ohio," "Conversation 16," "England," and closed with a GODLY performance of "Terrible Love"), Matt went into the crowd for "Abel." Played "Apartment Story," "Fake Empire," and "Mr. November." They did not fuck us over.

Vampire Weekend: Huge dance party on the hill (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eYfSgiFdVT0). So much fun.

My Morning Jacket: I need to see them again. Opened with soem of my favourite songs of theirs ("One Big Holiday," "Gideon," "Off the Record," "Touch Me I'm Going to Scream, Part 1," "I'm Amazed"). Played an awe-inspiring 15 minute or so version of "Dondante." Had an amazing finish and encore ("Wordless Chorus," "Highly Suspicious," and closing with "Steam Engine"). Couldn't have asked any more from them. The only bad thing was the crowd seriously depleted at around 11 when people started leaving for Deadmau5. Still, it was amazing.

Deadmau5: I only caught the last half, but i was seriously disappointed. Just didn't feel like he was giving it his all. Made the same drop about 3 times. Maybe it was because I was coming down from my high, or maybe it was because i was surrounded by sweaty guys, but i just wasn't feeling it.  His light show was pretty spectacular though (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kT57qPrBmYg).

Sunday:

Local Natives: Had to catch them from afar, but they sounded great. For a new band they sound extremely tight.

Tallest Man on Earth: I love this man. Dylanesque voice, amazing lyrics, incredible performer.

Cymbals Eat Guitars: It's a shame when the crowd looks disinterested (or literally aren't there at all) during a fantastic performance. Seriously, these guys shredded up there.

Kid Cudi: THE party of the weekend. The pit was absolutely packed I could barely move. I don't care for his music much, but he sure can put on a pretty decent show. A true showman.

The xx: Only caught like 3 songs from them, but damned if I didn't want to stay. Sounded great.

LCD Soundsystem: yeah, fuck the xx, I need a good spot in the pit for LCD, even if it means suffering through Tegan & Sara. This was probably the best show I've ever seen. I can't imagine what a full set would be, we got 9 songs and it was amazing. I'll sum it up by saying I got to sing "All My Friends" with all my friends. Oh, and  this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rNN1teHYIZ8).

Pavement: Classic Pavement. Classic Indie rock. Malkmus swinging his guitar around, acting like an asshole, arguing with the band, stopping the show multiple times, going over time, opening with "Cut Your Hair" and "Trigger Cut." What more could I ask for?

Massive Attack: Talk about light shows, holy fuck. I would like to tell you all about it but all i can remember is numbers flashing in the background and Martina Topley Bird's red dress. Totally Mind Blowing.

Booka Shade: These guys are fucking sweet. Danced my ass off. Craziest drum set-up i've ever seen.

Monday:

Temper Trap: Probably the only band that didn't blow me away. Still, it was decent, chill music for laying on the hill.

Drive-By Truckers: Wish i was in a better (ie. more sober) mind set for seeing them, but I can't say they weren't great.

Passion Pit: DANCE! DANCE! DANCE!

Japandroids: Total rock stars. Love em.

She & Him: Aw, I just love looking at Zooey. Even if they sucked i would love it. But they didn't, they were awesome. M. Ward is such a badass and they played a sweet cover of "Roll over Beethoven"

Band of Horses: Soooooo good. I forget how loved these guys are all over. They played the favourites and the entire crowd was singing along. I didn't know Ben Birdwell looked so fucking haggard though.

MGMT: Went into it not expecting much, hearing they suck live and their sound doesn't translate, blah blah blah. Dedicated the set to fallen soldiers (it was memorial day after all) and opened with a tasteful rendition of "Pieces of What." Then they RIPPED SHIT UP. They were absolutely great. All their new stuff is so great live, and they played "Time to Pretend" "Electric Feel" AND "Kids." MGMT had made it their mission this year to distance themselves from their first album (they didn't play "Kids" at Coachella, and rarely play it on tour), so it was pretty amazing they played all three of their biggest hits for us. Plus, did i mention they fucking rocked? The crowd looked like it was expecting a dance party when really it was a rock show. They broke it down pretty well during "The Handshake." Really, really surprised at how awesome they were.

Boys Noize: Intense. Never in my life have i been that covered in sweat.

Missed out seeing: Ween, New Pornos (arrgh!), Public Enemy (Double arrgh!), Mountain Goats (triple arrgh!), Dirty Projectors, Girls, Why? Dr. Dog, No Age, Past Lives, The Heavy, A-Trak, Neon Indian, Tame Impala, The Heavy, Fruit Bats, and Patrick Watson, but still, what a weekend.

Wow. This post was awesome.

Ha. I saw Pavement tonight in their hometown of Stockton, California - calling Stockton a suburb is generous, it's a desolate town ninety minutes east of San Francisco... creepy and strangely beautiful at the same time.

The band was incredible and, though they didn't open with "Cut Your Hair," all the other details remained the same. SM swung his guitar around, acted like an asshole, argued with the band, and went over time. It was all pretty fantastic, actually... it was an impeccable performance. I'm seeing them again tomorrow in Berkeley with Quasi opening - though I'm almost more excited about seeing Quasi.

Notable moment of the set: original drummer Gary Young came out for an encore of Slanted and Enchanted songs. He was nearly  incoherent, shirtless, and looked like a wreck BUT... that motherfucker is still a pretty solid drummer. The enthusiasm he brought to those songs was unrivaled.

I went to a free show for Casiotone For The Painfully Alone.  He got to the end of his set and said "I got through this faster than I thought I would... anyone have any requests?"

I was in the front, there weren't even many people, and I shouted "Hey, Eleanor"!  He ignores me and asks again, someone shouts out another song of his that I didn't know.

Then looked to me and he said: "I'm sorry, but I hate that song."

some part of me says, "hey that's a neat moment! I'm glad that happened in my life."

and another area says, "who in the fuck do you think you are?  You're welcome for my fucking money and also for supporting your god damn dream."

But that's cool dude.

To give him the benefit of a doubt, I hope that he just has some horrible memories attached to it and wanted to avoid the rush of emotions it would make him otherwise feel.

I was worried about seeing them at MSG which was by far the biggest venue Ive seen them in (of my 4 times) but it was great.  It was actually better than a smaller theater because with GA you could get right up front. Going to Chicago today for Lollapalooza, never been, excited to see them again Sunday.

I just saw The Wall live with Roger Waters, best concert ive been to, it goes hand in hand with Water's tour in 2007 when he played dark side of the moon.

any kids here saw him in the states? if not, you really missed it.

as a teenager I used to dream to see this album live, and now it came true, the concert was off the charts.

I saw Bright Eyes in Stockholm for not so long ago. It was a concert that only an obsessed teenager could experience and everything that I expected. He was rude, drunk as hell and amazing. He also tried to stage dive from the stage after the concert, and failed dramatically. It was pretty fun. I think he crushed some skinny emo girls who stood at the front (I became quite jealous at them).

I would rather have seen him live around 2002 instead, though. All their earlier songs were much better live.

I went to go see godspeed you! black emperor at lee's palace in Toronto this past sunday. It was great. I've seen them 4 times between 97-02. I felt honored attending their last show before they broke up. So, I was very excited to go see them since it had been almost a decade. They were on top form but the venue isn't the best. They deserve a good auditorium with seating and great acoustics. Anyone else see them this tour?

sweet! My show was great, but the best performance/show i ever went to was when they were in Montreal in '99, they were touring and selling "lift your skinny fists..." slightly before the street date. I'll never forget listening to "storm" for the first time and feeling some form of transcendence. utterly beautiful.

While everyone else  was seeing Weezer's Pinkerton show last night, I went to see The Antlers.
What a great show!  A lot of the live versions of these songs are so much better than the album versions.  So good!
Oh, and they actually LIKE playing the songs they came to play (unlike Weezer).

The new album has really grown on me lately.

I never really remember this thread, but I just came from a Ryan Adams concert and it was great. The dude's a bit of a douche, but he's also funny as hell, and when a guy can change so quickly from songs about the pain of love to an improv about nose boogers, or Jesus, or cougars, he has to be good, right? Great show, really liked it.

A couple of weeks back I also saw Sufjan Stevens, and it seemed to me like the closest I've been to a religious experience these past few years. It was such a long, yet magnificent concert, with great visuals on stage and, of course, great music. Listening to the epic Impossible Soul or Chicago live is a wonderful experience. I'll try and remember to check this thread more regularly.

Saw Modest Mouse back in May or so.  They are taking FOREVER to get their new album out.  Kinda ridiculous.  Show was decent, but I'd seen them three times or so previously, and the set they played wasn't quite my favorite and the audio was kind of bad (could barely hear vocals).  Skipped going to Spoon even though they have a really good new album out.  May see the New Pornographers in the next month or so when they come around.

RUBY YACHT show at The Airliner last night.

Holy shit... After a set from DJ Nobody during doortime, JPEGMAFIA opened (one of my favorite producers and lyricists across any genre) the support, followed up by easy-listening beach jam band BÜR GÜR. I thought they were fun, not my usual bag. Brian Miller of Deathbomb Arc schools me a bit when he notices my whinge. This has happened to me at the Smell, too. 5Ever humbled by his words in that moment. "They're all friends."

Next up was Kenny Segal, the fucking wizard. He made love to an entire rack of stickered SP101 and 404s. Orgasmic music as always from Kenny S. SB the Moor traded his usual rap persona for an electric guitar-only set. Twas cathartic! You could tell he was just having a good time playing with feedback while stoned.

Then the man we were all there to see, milo. milo played mostly tracks from his latest LP 'Who Told You To Think??!!?!?!' but he also brought out guest stars Open Mike Eagle and Busdriver to do some oldies. Watching Busdriver freestyle while milo's eyes twinkled ... Legendary...

The T.A.M.I. Show is a 1964 concert film released by American International Pictures. It includes performances by numerous popular rock and roll and R&B musicians from the United States and England. The concert was held at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium on October 28 and 29, 1964. Free tickets were distributed to local high school students. The acronym "T.A.M.I." was used inconsistently in the show's publicity to mean both "Teenage Awards Music International" and "Teen Age Music International".
