Oh man. This makes me realize how little new music I've bought this year.
1. Speakerboxx/The Love Below
2. Dear Catastrophe Waitress
3. Hail To The Thief
What's sad is that if I had bought all the music I've been meaning to buy, those second two, while excellent, might not even make it on the list. I'm just certain that there are other albums, yet unlistened to by me, that would take precedence over anything else I've bought this year, so I can't with in good heart complete a list of five.
I totally agree with you - There's heaps of other albums I would have liked to have bought - but lack of money and pure laziness has stopped that I guess.
Also, I've bought heaps of other cds that weren't released this year - ones that I've sort of caught up on.
Damn, I want a $50, 000 gift voucher to a record store!
yeah well that's why u gotta steal them (ie. use the interweb)..

I really haven't bought many albums this year. But from what I have got:
White Stripes 'Elephant'
The Strokes 'Room on Fire'
Beck 'Sea Changes' (did that come out this year??)
and I really like what I've heard of the new Radiohead and Outkast; so yeah, pretty typical choices across the board for me.
Hail To The Thief - Radiohead
Love Is Hell - Ryan Adams
Take Them On, On Your Own - BRMC
Youth And Young Manhood - Kings Of Leon
Room On Fire - Strokes

is this any good? i saw them twice when they opened for the strokes. thought they were okay. i really liked "california waiting" so i came home and downloaded that which has been spun a bunch of times, but other than that it didnt really grab me too much. change my mind.
wow...2002 and 2003's music has seemed to have blended together....weeeeeeeird

I really like it. Then again, if it sounds nice and retro, and the songs are hummable, I'm pretty much a fan. I just really like the sound and the mix. It's by Ethan Johns, the same guy who did Gold for Ryan Adams. I think the album is pretty cheap, it's definitely worth a buy for a rock fan. Imagine the rock-ey stuff of early Bowie and Velvet Underground mixed with a heap of Rolling Stones...

Not really. Those are just my favorite five albums of the year so far. I guess I could come up with plenty of ways each entry on the list is markedly different from the next, though.
although limited...
1.) Hail to the THief - Radiohead
2.) Room on Fire - The Strokes
3.) Elephant - The White Stripes
only other albums I have bought that are 2003 releases are Andrew WK's The Wolf, Zwan's Mary Star of the Sea and Pete Yorn's Day I Forgot.
How's Zwan? never did hear much from them? But I did love the Pumpkins..
...that is billy corgan's band, right??

was, they broke up. its worth a listen. its kind of like if the smashing pumpkins made a concept album about being happy in the 70s. i like "el sol" and "come with me" the best. give it a download.

Counterfeit 2 - Martin Gore
Paper Monsters - Dave Gahan
Make Up The Breakdown - Hot Hot Heat
1) The Mars Volta - Deloused in the Comatorium

4) The Shins - Shoots Too Narrow

did it? i thought it was from last year. then add it to mine. because 25 mf's can't be wrong
The only reason I know is because I finally bought the actual CD (as opposed to the downloaded tracks I've been listening to) and it said 2003 on the case. But I've been listening to their music for...over two years now, I think.
i got Absolution by Muse the day before yesterday. good stuff, good stuff.

Out Of Season didn't get released until this year in the states, so you can count it if you want.
I can't quite figure out why I never picked up Elephant. It's topping most lists, and I liked the singles and their last album. Curious. Maybe I'll pick it up tomorrow.
i completely forgot this one:
As with every year, it's very tough to narrow down to five, I'm not sure who ever came up with that number.

You should. It's amazing. It's definitely my favorite of this year, although i haven't explored a lot of what is out there in 2003, but for what's readily available to me, it's the best.
It far exceeds their last album.

that's a very Jack White attitude. nothing wrong in that.

Elephant is a pretty good album, but I say it doesn't top their debut or
