Title: has paul helped you with the ladies?
Post by: cron on November 13, 2003, 01:43:55 PM
we all love the guy but  when life is not xixax.com or ptanderson.com , we have to face reality.  or not, but  personally i found it hard to mix my likes and dislikes with the people around me ,  im guessing (and hoping) that you all too. .. here's a little piece of conversation i'm sure you've had at least once:

YOU :  so do you like movies?
x person: sure
you: what kind of movies'
x person: all kinds ,  scary movies.
you :  you know who paul thomas anderson is?
x person: paul who?
you: paul thomas anderson, pt anderson. PTA for short.
x person: never heard of him

(then the ever recurring phrase)
you: well...do you know fiona apple?
x person: i think so, yeah, she's kinda crazy.
you: he's her boyfriend.
x person: great
you: yeah, in fact, he has directed some of her videos.
x person: so listen... i gotta go, take care. bye!
you : uh, bye

aint that the truth...

if you answer this post, i'll tell you all a nice story.

A common response:

"Yeah, like, was that one with the frogs? Omigod, like, what was that all about? That movie was so strange. You like him?"

ok , the nice story goes like this:

like 5 months ago i  was about to leave mexico and my friends threw me a party and i met a girl in that party and we had the most indiferent chat (did you just said chat? )  and then i came to live on israel and i found out around 2 months ago  that i actually talked to her because she told a friend of mine that 'she thought i was cute'   :)
so eventually i tried to contact her and i started sending her e-mails and one day i found her  on MSN and started talking to her but she had to go.

and like 3 days ago, i found her again and we started talking about movies, and i dont remember why i brought up the subject of magnolia (i usually bring it when im drunk) and she said something like "but that movie is excelent!"  then she had to go....

which brings us to this....  im confused, should i think of marriage??

that's the most romantic thing....

if she's cute, and she's got good movie taste

yep, propose... now!

And I as well have had many conversations that go along the lines of people saying Magnolia was "too long", "wasn't about anything", "confusing when the frogs fell". I usually give them a look somewhat like I may creep into their bedroom that night and slit their throat while they sleep, then I walk away. I am not that respecful of others' opinions...

you're actually not gonna believe this , but here's an anecdote i heard from a friend of mine.

this father went to the movies with his daughter to see punch drunk love and after the movie was finished he went all pissed off to the box office and asked how the hell could they show crap like that, he asked for his money back because "it was responsibility of the theatre to present quailty works".

i remember going for the second time to watch it and i counted 7 persons in the room.   and that's me included.

that's kinda exactly what happened to me.

on my way in for my second viewing, some people from the previous show were demanding their money back. this one middle age lady advised that I not pay for that movie, because it was terrible and didn't make any sense. oh, she supposed that if you were a film school person you might like the camera and stuff, but any normal person would see how terrible it was.

I didn't really love PDL, so I couldn't freak out on her. But I tried to explain, and she started going on about "the same guy who did Magnolia", and how bad that movie was, and how she wished all movies were as great as American Beauty. I wanted her to die. But her friend (late 20's blonde) said she loved Magnolia. I think she was giving me the old eye. Maybe. I dunno. So I let the people walk away and went in to see PDL. As usual, some people walked out in the middle.

Ah, memories...

maybe I'm just a lucky guy, but at this moment, I can't remember one person I can call my friend who didn't liked magnolia, or boogie nights...

...or punch drunk love

I mean those films are so easy to like and get and enjoy. I've ha dmor eproblems with more complicated and ambiguious (how the fuck do you spell this?) films like eyes wide shut, a.i. and gangs of new york for people to understand why those are good...

well  my story kind of pissed me off because pdl is my favorite movie. but the thing that lets me sleep at night is that  i KNOW that if paul was all mainstream i wouldnt like him as much as i do right now.    even if his movies were the same but sold well and were en bogue,  my introvert personality would deny me to praise that stuff, even if excelent. it's a very stupid and selfish way to put it but  i can't help it! it's one of the only things im sure of

I tried to get my old roommate to watch Magnolia for an entire year. He did, finally, and turned it off when it started raining. I was so pissed at him. How could he invest himself in the film for that long and turn it off at the very end. Now he goes around saying the movie wasn't any good and I'm like You didn't even finish it you dumb bastard!

But, yeah, you should marry the girl. In Vegas if possible.

All of my male friends thought Magnolia was the coolest movie, and all of my female friends (including my own girlfriend) hated it... but she hates the Beatles too, so what does she know?

I have had that movie conversation with tons of people... its almost like i can't talk to people about movies anymore, because a PTA flick will eventually be mentioned, and then people will be scared by how much I talk about it... at school its funny... all of the professors hated Magnolia, and all of the students loved it (this is a film major, by the way)...

Actually, every girl I've ever met who enjoys movies, loved Magnolia very much. But it's a very respected and liked movie in Portugal, so it's kind of great that I'm far from beeing alone in my love for the movie around here.

YES!~~PDL TAUGHT ME THINGS ABOUT THA LADEEZ!~~
I saw it like a month after my last gf and I called the quits (meaning she tried to ignore me and I went "fuck!" alot) but overall the movie taught me that I too could stand up for myself, keeping in mind that I shouldn't be ditchin' da ladeez like Barry did without reason. Yeah, that last gf was sick and I went to a party, asked if she wanted to go, and when she said "no" went anyways. Estupido!
I also may be an angry fellow at times, but hopefully I can find those reasons also. I don't have seven sisters, but back in High School, I was surrounded by bastards. The ones who are nice people, right, but they can bug then ignore you 'til you want to rip their heads off, chew them up and vomit them across the room at another person just like him/her? yeah. That I could relate to.
I don't usually have vast conversations about movies that I really like with females that I know because usually they could give a rat's arse about that. They'd rather see a guy HIMSELF be creative instead of talkin' bout someone else who is sometimes. If they want to talk about one o' my movies, I'd be up for that. Give 'em all the reasons for mah love. I used to be even shy, oddly self-concious about showing people these movies, but I showed a friend of mine I thought would hate Boogie Nights and she thought it was hilarious.
PDL Though? If they someone doesn't like it, hey! It's got fuckin' SANDLER in it! They'll think about that instead of my tastes.
Plus, if someone doesn't like PDL at least once, I DON'T LIKE THEM! BAH!

i've come to learn that girls just say that they things you like if they think your cute/ have money/ or are known to put out... oh wait... anyway, yeah that to that kid who said that girl talked to him on the internet and then said she had to go: she was probably hey yeah that movie's really good i gotta go eat dinner bye. and yeah that wouldn't be cool. so what you should do is test her and see if she knows all of the charecters names and if you think that's too easy then give out two charecters in magnolia and demand her to tell you how they're related. example: jim curring and earl partridge: jim curring is dating claudia gator who's dad, Jimmy Gator, is the host of a kids quiz show named What Do Kids Know? which is produced by Earl Partridge. see what i mean? if she gets this right you need to knock her over the head with a bludgeon and put her on your shoulder and take her away. don't let girls like these get away... they are jubies.... i mean rubies

Has he helped me out with the ladies?

Considering the fact that my favorite movie of all time is Boogie Nights, telling a girl your favorite movie is a movie about porn isn't always the best pick-up line.

I would say I liked Boogie Nights, and they'd say "That's a dirty movie.  It's sick."

I would say I liked Magnolia, and they'd say "That didn't make any sense."

I would say I liked Punch-Drunk Love and they'd say "That was stupid, and it didn't make any sense!"

But my g/f hadn't seen any PTA movies before we dated, and I wanted her to watch them all in order, but I caved and we watched PDL.  She like it a lot, but thought it was very sad.  So I'm gonna have her watch Hard Eight, and probably this Christmas break, we're gonna watch Boogie Nights and Magnolia back to back.  Intense.  But she has good taste in movies.  It's so awesome.

Hahaha, that's exactly it!!

Back in grade 12, when my fav movie was Boogie Nights, this one girl said to a buddy of mine "Sean only likes that movie because it's porn". Not "it's about porn", oh no, apparently it is porn. And that's the only reason I like it. Oh, stupid, awful me. What a sick person I am.

Not to be condescending, but I would never go up to a friend...especially a girl...and ask them if they know who PTA is, I just wouldn't expect them to know or care. And personally, I've always liked it better when the only director a girl knows is Spielberg, that way you can have fun introducing them to everything else. I never have thought knowing a lot about film or being a fan of an obscure filmmaker would help me out with the ladies so I'm not mad at Paul, he's still a god.

Exactly man, I've never understood that either. Especially guy film geeks looking for girl film geeks, that's the weirdest of all I think. I mean, sure, you may very well have fun seeing the new current stuff coming out but you can't really introduce eachother to older stuff, they'll be too many fights cause chances are the person's already going to be somewhat familiar with (or worse -- disinterested in) what they're being shown and that would really suck for both people. See, I think film geeks are too obsessive, we probably see too much to be introduced to stuff that we'll like, either that or we're too cynical or arrogant to think there's anything good out there that we haven't already come across ourselves. I could be way wrong, but I think girls that don't know a lot about film would be the exact opposite - like I think they'd be open to it, I don't think you'd have to force it on them, I think they'd enjoy it all cause they don't know what to expect. It sounds really fun.

QuoteBut it goes both ways..let her teach you a few things too.  No matter the subject

Oh, of course. I'm never getting a girlfriend but if I ever was going to, absolutely, that would be a must, I agree.

Only by the broadest definition of the word "possible". As in, falling somewhere between the two extremes of astrology being real and Freddie being in the closet.
