I was trying to think of a few, and I can't get past Crimes and Misdemeanors and George Washington.  I haven't seen Sophie's Choice in a long time and I've never seen Ordinary People though I've heard it's a good movie about guilt.  There is also Map to the Human Heart but it relies heavily on exposition in the dialogs to get the point through, and not particularly visceral.  I really liked Herzog's The White Diamond, but I am looking for a movie that can capture the sense of guilt without much talking, where it can really inhabit the space around the actors.  Yeah?

Obviously what you are doing right now is called (in my upcoming book of psychology at least) validation. I think it's a normal thing to do. People will reply, say anything, and then you're gonna do what you were subconsciently thinking of doing all along.

one of my all time favourite themes. so, to start off..

when you say "inhabits the space around the actors", is there a reason why you need it to be dispersed like that? cos i think deniro's face in RB is the definition of guilt. scorsese has a lot of good guilt movies. even cape fear which is i guess about the destructive force of denying guilt.

this is a different kind of guilt, i think closer to what you describe:

World of Glory (1991), a swedish short film by Roy Andersson (songs from the second floor).. the movie is strictly an external world of guilt inhabited by all, until you get a sense of it seeping through their skin. it's really amazing.

it used to be on youtube. i've since found with french subtitles. i've glossed the entire thing (15mins) below. however don't worry too much about dialogue, there is very little of it, used mainly to punctuate the pervasive atmosphere of guilt. so it fits both your criteria. it's also really funny in parts, despite first impressions. the humour is bluntly presented yet extremely layered.. notice the scenes in which he raises his voice, this guilt is intergenerational and deeply spiritual. is there any escape? the truth is as unsettling your own laughter at these moments. (sc2, 3, 14)

watch the first scene without the translation, then if it helps, refer to the gloss at the bottom of this post.

better yet, if you need to show it to a whole bunch of english speakers, or if any of you need this in your life permanently, it was released in a short film collection as part of a series called cinema 16 along with other great shorts which don't hav much to do with this thread..
