Title: Post your DVD Deals
Post by: SHAFTR on November 17, 2003, 11:44:42 PM
I know that most people here are dvd collectors.  I think we should help each other out.  If you find a deal at a major store (Best Buy, Circuit City, Target, websites), post it on here so we can all know about it.

This week until 11/29, Best Buy has 20% off selected Box Sets and Paramount films.

Amazon.ca has great deals. DVDs are 30% before they're released. So Criterions are very cheap if you pre-order them :-D

I only go to scamazon when I can't find it anywhere else. They definitely don't have the best prices even with their free shipping for orders over $25. I usually save about $4 for music DVDs at Deep Discount compared to scamazon.

Deep Discount DVD (http://www.deepdiscountdvd.com) - the best prices anywhere with free shipping. Be aware of older versions like std formats. They have the Deranged/Motel Hell 2 PACK for $9.36 and Reefer Madness for $6 all shipped free. I know lots of you are dying for those   . Seriously, lots of mainstream and rare movies with great prices!

Columbia House (http://www.columbiahouse.com/cl1/ch/welcome?&club=3&stype=CLUB&dt=1069192721011&pin=62&bak=NONE) for the staples

Adult (http://www.adultcddvdvideo.com/dvdmain.asp) cheapies

I actually have to vouch for amazon canada. free delivery, and like someone else said, if you pre-order you get great deals on the more expensive stuff, like Criterions.

also, I just ordered Once Upon A Time In The West for $18 Canadian. I dunno how good that is, but it seems pretty decent to me...

also, if you order with them, every couple months they send you a $5 gift certificate, which is kinda nice.

Twin peaks season 1 including the pilot R2 £17.99 at  play.com (http://www.play.com/play247.asp?page=title&r=R2&title=107802&p=57&c=&g=72url). I urge anyone in Europe to snap this gem up. I got the R1 version when it came out and it is the best quality picture, colour and sound of any DVD I’ve watched as well as being one of the most intriguing TV programs I’ve ever watched! Now they have to put me out my pain and release season 2!!!!

Its still too expensive also... the avarage cost of about 28 bucks each buying the entire collection is not really a big discount... considering that already in eBay you can get several titles for 20-25 bucks...

I also wouldnt buy ALL the films... unless there's really an amazing price...

So I just pre-ordered Slacker from Amazon.com and the thank-you page has this offer I've seen before where I can send e-mails to friends and if they want to buy the same product, they can get 10% off.  The sender also gets some sort of discount on their next purchase.  So I thought I'd post here so you all can taken advantage of this.  Anyone who wants Slacker and plans to order it from Amazon.com should PM me their e-mail address (probably the one they use at Amazon) ASAP so I can submit this offer to them.  Slacker is $27.96 right now at Amazon, BTW.  Also, anyone else ordering DVDs from Amazon should post here, too, if they get that offer.

DVDPlanet has Slacker for $25.97, but I imagine they get you on shipping, whereas Amazon's is free.  With the 10% off, at Amazon it's $25.16.

EDIT: Too late now, for Slacker, from me.  But it still stands for other offers.

All month, Borders is running a "Buy 3, get the 4th free" deal on all DVDs.  I don't think there are any exceptions.  Check it out.  With the right math, it could be a great deal, even though Borders overprices some of their DVDs compared to online places.
Title: Re: Post your DVD Deals
Post by: eward on January 12, 2005, 09:46:48 PM
borders doesn't overprice nearly as bad as barnes and noble or virgin records.  some of their prices are just ridiculous.
Title: Re: Post your DVD Deals
Post by: ono on January 12, 2005, 10:20:36 PM
Agreed.  Where there are some things I will buy at Borders (sometimes they have really good deals on new titles, and on unpopular ones, too), I make it a point never to buy at Barnes and Noble.

Trying to compete with Borders, no doubt.  And failing.  Miserably.  From where I'm sitting anyway.  I imagine they do some business, because they haven't closed up DVD shop yet.  It's too lucrative.  I just wonder why more people haven't realized where the real deals are, and how certain stores can get away with charging such insane prices.

Blockbuster does this thing where if you are late with your movie, they just charge you for it then you keep the movie, and they charge you like 12 bucks minus the price of the rental. So it's really like 8 bucks. I'm in the process of going to all the blockbusters in my area and renting all their out of print criterions. After I was charged for them I went in there and they gave me the coverboxes and artwork and everything. These are all 10 bucks. I only have Robocop cause thats the only one I was charged for, but im waiting on Rashomon, Carnival of souls, and a few others, notably a silence of the lambs (which I already have) and a straw dogs that is out of print. And i've only hit up one blockbuster.

no sir, the title of the thread is "post your DVD deals" so Mac posted his DVD deal, hence doing exactly what the title of the thread commands. he posted a DVD and the price for which he was selling it (quite a deal, i might add) and then said "PM Me" if anyone wanted to buy it, etc. THEN someone tried to redirect him to the "DVD swap" thread, but Mac was like, "hold on muthafuckas, i didn't say i wanted to swap anything, i want to SELL this" thus, he did the right thing, end of story.

that was weird.

From what I read, it only appeared to hit random stores.  No regular pattern.  W may be right that he never encountered it at his store.

It also appears that this mishap only lasted a day or two because there were reports of stores pulling the DVD's in question off the shelves until the pricing was corrected.

Yesterday I also found Friends season 4 for $5.99.  That one's going on eBay.  The rest of the sets I scanned on the price checkers rang up at normal price.  Some said "item info not available."  I doubt the deals are still there in any Targets right now.

yes i do work there and i hope to be transfered soon to a store in chicago.  but i don't think i will buy any of those dvds.  nothing really interest me and the titles that do, i already have.  the last pay check i gave back to them was when i bought the new director's label dvds.

They also had Dr. Strangelove Superbit 2-disc and Lawrence of Arabia LE for $14.99.  I wouldn't buy LOA, since I have the superior Superbit, but I might pick up Dr. Strangelove.

The DVD Talk forum people are pretty pissed.  I guess DDD is raising a lot of the mainstream titles by enough that the titles will actually end up being more expensive during the sale.  Stuff like The OC Season I, The Andy Griffith Show, Mallrats SE, etc.  Right now the under the radar titles haven't had price increases, but there's definitely pessimism in the air.

Synopsis:  I'd price check before you buy to make sure you're getting a deal, and there definitely will be deals to be had.

Im really surprised on how BestBuy turned out to be the best place for me to buy DVDs... they always have new releases at 14.99-16.99, and they have a shitload of movies at 9.99. They are starting to have more and more movies at 5.99 and 7.99, and every other week they have a 3 for 20 deal on their website, or a buy 2 get 1 free. Not to mention the reward zone points, which it takes a while, but I just got 145 dollars worth of coupons monday which I happily spent on DVDs.

i don't have a dvd collection that i'm all that proud of. i don't own many movies at all. i saved the money i would have spent on dvd's for my computer, so there are a ton that I'd like to own but dont, including most of my favorites.

DDD is having a $5.98 sale with a surprising amount of good/unusual titles.

I went through and these piqued my interest:

Spider
Betty Blue
The Man Without a Past
The Experiment
Broken Wings
Walk on the Wild Side
California Split
The Dreamlife of Angels
Obsession (De Palma)
Baadasssss!
The Red Dwarf
Timecode
Le Dernier Combat
Homicidal
Solomon and Gaenor
Safe
Fat City
The Harder They Fall
The Front
Gas Food Lodging

And there may even be more.  A lot I hadn't heard of.  I haven't made my purchase yet because I want to see if you guys have anything to say about the titles.  Hell I'm not going to buy that list I made either, so if you have anything to say about them please do.

"The Front" is a really good, underrated movie.. I haven't seen it in several years but from what I remember, it's a funny and almost scathing little time-capsule of that fearful, paranoid era.

This is a good sale.  It is still going on, actually.  I just made a purchase for a few of these titles last night.  The deal is that these are Sony DVD Releases and are going out of print (some are already unavailable).  So, if you have any interest in owning something like Spider, Safe, Fat City, Timecode or California Split, you should probably act soon while they can be had (and at a great price).

I've actually obtained a lot of titles from the sale, some omitted from the recent sales thread, some included.  When I'm at a store I find myself flipping over the DDDVD titles and finding $25 price tags and going back to the site to purchase.  Really random, really good titles available.  Ones in which I thought maybe a standard price reducation was entailed and then to find out that no, DDDVD is on the ball.

I suggest looking through the titles.

Purple Noon I give my highest recommendation.  The best $6 I've spent on the site.

Tower Records to be liquidated

Tower Records has played its last tune.

On Friday, after a 29-hour auction, most of the bankrupt music retailer's assets were sold to liquidation firm Great American Group, which bid $134.3 million. The company outbid Albany, N.Y.-based retailer Trans World Entertainment by a mere $500,000.

According to Tower attorney Peter Gurfein, Great American was set to begin liquidation and going-out-of-business sales Saturday.

An internal e-mail to employees from Tower CEO Joseph D'Amico said the company's Web operation, Tower.com, its label 33rd Street Records and its real estate holdings were sold separately.

D'Amico -- a bankruptcy specialist who succeeded outgoing CEO Allen Rodriguez in July -- said in his message, "My heart goes out to each of you who have poured your hearts and souls into this great company."

The sale sounded a bitter final bar for Tower, which operated 89 U.S. stores. Once the dominant music retailer in the country, the 46-year-old company attracted consumers to its spacious stores with flashy merchandising and a focus on deep catalog in a breadth of musical categories. Its store on Hollywood's Sunset Strip was a legendary music-biz hangout. But Tower's fortunes waned in the late '90s as severe price competition from big-box merchants, the growth of Internet sales, piracy and some ill-advised international expansion eroded sales.

The disappearance of Tower's familiar red-and-yellow logo will leave a gaping hole in the landscape of American music retailing. Los Angeles-based Virgin Megastores, which operates 20 Virgin Megastores, now will become the most prominent deep-catalog retailer.

One veteran industry observer noted that Tower might have accounted for 40%-50% of some niche-genre labels' business.

The largest surviving specialty retailers, including Trans World and Amarillo, Texas-based Hastings Books, Music & Video, are predominantly mall-based, hit-driven operations with a highly diversified product mix.

The sell-off of Tower's inventory, valuations of which run as high as $200 million, could have a wide-ranging impact on the music business at large. The company's West Sacramento, Calif., warehouse is filled with product from the vendors of its independent distribution company, Bayside Distribution, and its accessories suppliers. Companies with a high degree of exposure could be dealt a serious blow when their product is returned for full wholesale cost.

The court-supervised auction of Tower climaxed two months of drama, which began in early August when word surfaced that the retailer's major suppliers were refusing to ship product to the chain after it was unable to pay its bills. Estimates of Tower's total debt ran as high as $200 million. The troubled company -- 85% ownership of which shifted to its bondholders following a February 2004 filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection -- had been on the sales block, but a sale to a group of unnamed investment firms reportedly fell through during the summer.

On Aug. 21, Tower filed a second petition for Chapter 11 protection (HR 8/22). Tower asked the court for a prompt sale of its assets so that a new owner would be in place before the critical fourth-quarter holiday sales season.

Sixteen companies -- ranging from Trans World (which had bought up several similarly distressed competitors) to music wholesalers and real estate operators -- subsequently entered bids on Tower's assets; Great American turned in the top early bid of $90 million.

Many had hoped that Chicago-based Radius Equity -- a "white knight" bidder that had pledged to keep the chain's stores up and running on a stand-alone basis -- would win the bidding, but the company withdrew after it failed to assemble financing in time for the auction.

The family of Russ Solomon, who founded Tower in 1960 as a music department in his father's Sacramento pharmacy, remained a 15% shareholder. Solomon did not enter a bid for the company.

In an e-mail circulated Friday to Tower's staff, Solomon said, "The fat lady has sung ... she was way off key. Thank You, Thank You, Thank You."

On Friday, hours before the Great American acquisition was announced, Tower employees held a barbecue at the West Sacramento headquarters. More than one source described it as "a wake."

the problem when i went in there is that it seems that they raised the prices on everything, so the discount does not seem that much

They still had a fair amount of CC films left. They had Sword of the Beast, Samurai Rebellion,Early Summer, Crazed Fruit, The Wages of War, Elevator to the Gallows, Young Mr. Lincoln, and Bad Timing. These were eitherr 15 or 20 dollars a piece.

wow, that's crazy.

Does Deep Discount also have an annual Criterion specific sale? I'm thinking they have some 40% off sale, maybe around tax return time.

Mac, you deserve some commission.  :yabbse-grin:

Luckily, I remembered in time. The site was sorta slow so there must be a lot of last minute buys. I'm not sure what time zone the site goes by, but I remember once waiting until 12 Central and it was too late.

I saw the new Costco passport to savings and July 16 there's going to be $20 off HBO boxsets.  Deadwood Seasons 1-3, Sopranos 4-6.1 (or whatever), and Band of Brothers were listed.

So that'd be $30 for the new Deadwood season

Way early this morning Amazon had this going on:

An Angel at My Table -14.40
A Canterbury Tale - 14.40
Border Radio - 14.40
Equinox - 14.00
Flowers of St. Francis - 10.80
Green for Danger - 14.00
Jigoku - 10.00
Monsters and Madmen $28.80
When a Woman Ascends the Stairs - 14.40

Pretty freaking awesome.

Most of them are adjusted now, but I just rechecked and I know that Monsters and Madmen box, Border Radio, Woman ascends the Stairs, St Francis, are still alive but double check your cart right before you hit submit in case it changes (that has happened to a few).

Thanks for the heads up.

I've been wanting Border Radio for a while, but never for the price usually asked.

Picked up When a Woman Ascends the Stairs for good measure.

Almost got greedy and picked up copies of the other two even though I own them. Because I am American and cannot refute a deal.

Really wish I would have been on this earlier, though. I want Green for Dangerand Jingoku quite a bit.

In the new City Beat there's a 40% off coupon for Second Spin used dvds.

And Second Spin's policy is absolutely no scratches.  And they don't charge extra for unopened used products.  So it's completely legit to purchase used from them and this is my deal of the year.

Note to self:

If you order from Deep Discount and half you order is backordered, you'll get an e-mail saying the first part shipped that will show an all messed up address from what you have entered in Your Account. DO NOT e-mail them and make sure they have the correct address on the mailing label. They won't really read or understand what you're saying so they'll cancel the rest of your order even when you explicitly tell them you DO NOT want to cancel your order. Afterwards, when you point out the two errors they've made in dealing with you, they'll politely ask you to reorder the items, but will refuse to give you the same 20% discount.

thanks. i looked at a borders site, but i don't remember beta in the address.

even though this is essentially a 1/3rd off sale (assuming you get 3 like priced items) i'm not sure it beats the DDD 1/5th off sale as all the DVD are marked at full retail price - Criterions $20 something at DDD are $40 at Borders (at least ones i was interested in).

Incidentally, picture-in-picture enhanced commentary.... wholly useless bullshit.

All me baby! I don't think I like anyone enough to bestow that much Frasier upon them. I've watched the show religiously for years and have been waiting for the right moment to pounce and buy them all at the same time. The only thing that sucks is I goofed and told them to condense the order into as few shipments as possible and a couple of the seasons have a two week wait so I'll just be watching Lifetime until then.

Hello everyone. I thought about you guys when I heard about this sale. I've got a reliable source at DVD Planet in Huntington Beach, CA, and this person told me that there's going to be a Criterion Sale going on for two weeks at the store: a Buy-One-Get-One-Free-Criterion Sale. This sale applies to all Criterions, even the Eclipse Series.

So if you're around the Orange County, CA area from the 15th through the 28th of July, come through to the store and pick up some Criterions. I can't make it because I don't have any more credit cards to max out.

Christmas in July folks.

does anyone go ahead and order the out of stock things?

They also have The Billy Wilder DVD Collection (The Apartment / Avanti! / The Fortune Cookie / Irma LaDouce / Kiss Me, Stupid / One, Two, Three / Private Life of Sherlock Holmes / Some Like It Hot / Witness for the Prosecution) (9-DVD) for $40.  And a lot of great movies for $7 including Kiss Me Deadly, Compulsion, Planet of the Vampires, etc.

I own so many of these, and bought them all for moderately higher prices, that it makes me sick.  I'm sure this has to do with Blu Ray related inventory clear out because I've never seen a DDD sale that went on "While supplies last[ed]."

A ton of great titles, some already in better editions and some not.  All $6.

I'm thinking of Cutter's Way and Bound for Glory for myself.

I'm going on Wed. to the City Of Industry store. Silias?

Circuit City closing 155 stores
Associated Press

RICHMOND, Va. -- Circuit City Stores Inc. said Monday it is closing about 20 percent of its U.S. stores -- cutting thousands of jobs -- in an effort to return to profitability as it finds consumers reluctant to spend and its vendors less eager to give it credit.

The nation's No. 2 consumer electronics retailer said it will shut 155 of its more than 700 stores and leave at least a dozen markets entirely, including Phoenix and Atlanta, by Dec. 31. It will lay off about 17 percent of its domestic work force, which could affect up to 7,300 people.

Stores in Southern California that will be closed include those in City of Industry, Compton, Escondido, Fontana, Foothill Ranch, Mira Loma, Moreno Valley, Murrietta, Pomona, Riverside, Thousand Oaks, Santa Barbara, Santa Maria and Vista.

Circuit City also said it will further cut back on new store openings and plans to work with landlords to renegotiate leases, lower rent or terminate agreements while it deals with tightening credit from its vendors.

The moves renewed the specter of bankruptcy hanging over the Richmond, Va.-based company as it heads into a holiday shopping season that could determine its future, amid slower consumer spending that has even the least vulnerable retailers worried.

"The weakened environment has resulted in a slowdown of consumer spending, further impacting our business as well as the business of our vendors," James A. Marcum, vice chairman and acting president and chief executive said in a statement. "The combination of these trends has strained severely our working capital and liquidity."

Marcum called the decision to close stores "difficult, but necessary."

Based on nearly 43,000 employees as of Feb. 29, 17 percent could be up to about 7,300 workers. But the company said the number would likely be lower in part because employees in some markets may become employed at other stores. It would not give further details.

Circuit City shares, which have traded under $1 for more than a month, rose 10 cents, or about 40 percent, to 36 cents in midday trading Monday.

The company said it expects the stores it is shuttering, which generated about $1.4 billion in net sales in fiscal 2008, will not open on Tuesday and store closing sales will begin Wednesday.

Circuit City spokesman Bill Cimino said the decision to pull out of 12 markets was based on store performance.

"There are some markets where we have more competitors, there are some markets where we have less competitors, in all, we're closing 155 stores that were underperforming," Cimino said.

Circuit City also noted restrictive actions taken by its vendors, including limiting credit for purchases. The company said it is working to secure support from vendors, but the "current mix of terms and credit availability is becoming unmanageable."

It also said it has been unable to collect an income tax refund of about $80 million that Circuit City believes it is owed from the federal government.

Standard & Poor's Equity Research analyst Michael Souers told investors that Circuit City's decision was "rational and necessary to attempt to conserve capital," but said restrictive measures by some vendors may "ultimately prove too challenging."

"We think there is a fair chance (Circuit City) will be forced to file for Chapter 11" bankruptcy protection, Souers wrote.

The company has had only one profitable quarter in the past year, posting a wider second-quarter loss in September with a 13 percent decline in sales at stores open at least a year. Its results have weakened as the company faces significant declines in traffic, heightened competition from rival Best Buy Co. and others and a weakened brand position.

Circuit City, which is exploring strategic alternatives, has also been working with advisers to determine how to substantially improve its operating and financial performance.

The company said last week it received a warning from the New York Stock Exchange that its stock price is not high enough for continued listing. The NYSE said the shares had an average closing price of less than $1 over 30 consecutive trading days as of Oct. 22, falling short of the exchange's requirement. Its shares have closed under a dollar since Sept. 30, when they fell to 76 cents. Shares have traded between 17 cents and $8.24 in the last year.

In order to regain compliance with the NYSE, Circuit City's common stock share price and the average share price over a consecutive 30-trading-day period must both exceed $1 within six months of it receiving the notice.

A major Circuit City shareholder -- Classic Fund Management AG, a Liechtenstein-based asset management company -- also said last week that it cut its holdings to 8.2 million shares, or about 4.8 percent of the company, from 9.5 million shares, or 5.6 percent.

Circuit City has been under new leadership since late September when Chief Executive Philip J. Schoonover agreed to step down. He was replaced by Marcum.

does anyone experience very bad customer service at Cir City?
every one i've ever been to there are always tons of employees standing around, but none will ever check you out. i only go there when the sale is significantly greater than other stores.
this is not just my experience at one local location, but locations in different cities and towns as well.

i wonder if there is a complete list of all the shut downs anywhere.

Circuit City closing 155 stores

Not worth it. Only 20% off DVDs and CDs; and when you add in tax, you're only saving about half of that. Cheaper to wait for the DDD sale.

I got my battery changed at Wal-Mart today, and while killing time I saw the 5 movie Scorsese box set there for $13.

Is this old news?

btw - does that contain all the best dvd versions of those films or has there already been new versions of any of them?

I just checked Amazon and it's down to $23.99, so not as big a dip as I was thinking, but still significant if you don't have it (like me).

If it's the MGM box, they've since re-released New York, New York claiming it has an new anamorphic transfer, but it doesn't. The features on the new edition seem interesting but negligible...

If it's the Warner box, you've got the latest and best editions available (minus Blu-Ray).

either way, you won... you lucky duck. I'm sure I payed much more than that when either box was initially released.

Circuit City, R.I.P.

The troubled 60-year-old electronics chain tried its best to survive bankruptcy, but to no avail; now, it will liquidate its merchandise and close all 567 remaining stores.

Bloomberg reports that Circuit City Stores Inc. has hired a quartet of liquidators to sell off its existing merchandise, pending a green light from the courts. If everything goes according to plan, the fire sale will start Saturday and continue through the end of March, according to CNNMoney.com.

And unfortunately for Circuit City's 30,000+ employees, unemployment awaits.

The biggest consumer tech chain in the U.S. besides Best Buy, Circuit City filed for bankruptcy protection back in November. As Bloomberg notes, the struggling company had been looking for a buyer as late as Thursday, but failed to find any takers.

Of course, news of the Circuit City liquidation sale will draw plenty of bargain hunters, but (as I've blogged before), buyer beware.

Typically, closeout sales are final: no refunds or exchanges, so think twice before snapping up a big-ticket item like an HDTV. Also, keep in mind that closeout prices often aren't as rock-bottom low as you'd think; make sure to comparison shop online, and don't be fooled by big "75% OFF!" signs on items that have been marked up.

Finally ... a deep bow to Circuit City in general, where I've spent countless hours of browsing (and drooling)—and if nothing else, when it comes to tech retailers, less competition is never a good thing.

I thought Circuit City mostly sucked - every store I'd ever been had generally bad customer service (there'd be 20 employees standing around talking and no one would ever come over and check you out) - but they did beat out Best Buy now and then and have some cool little exclusives with movies sometimes.

It's around the same roughly; matters of dollars and cents. B&N gives you free shipping (expedited too) on orders over $25, but they also charge tax to every state that allows it. I say go with B&N if you are planning to buy in bulk, and are tired of DDD always being sold out. Order will ship quicker too. However, the sale Criterions at B&N online are on selected titles (My Dinner With Andre, for example is not on sale).

Then I remembered that Criterions are twice the price of affordable DVD's, so really I wasn't really saving too much at all.  If anything.

But the real-life story didn't star two-time recipient of the National Association of Theater Owner’s Star of the Year Award Christopher Atkins.  So it sucks.

Barnes & Noble 50% off Criterions:
http://video.barnesandnoble.com/u/DVD-The-Criterion-Collection-of-Special-Edition-DVDs/379000756/?cds2Pid=32128

Warner Bros. changed their insane DVD2Blu program so you can send in literally ANY DVD for ANY MOVIE and exchange for a new Blu-Ray for like $4.99-$6.99.  It's sounds pretty awesome, we'll see how long they take to ship.

It's actually not.  The 6 movies I'm getting on blu-ray would be $87 plus shipping on amazon.  I paid $37 including shipping and sent in some old movies I've already upgraded that I didn't need anymore.  $50 savings, still a good deal!  If you're doing like 1 or 2 movies it's probably not worth it but for this particular batch, its really good.

i don't remember if anyone already posted this (though i'm sure if someone did i would've been all over it then) and i'm too lazy to go back and check, so...

9 disney blus for $90... well, $89.70

www.disneyblurayclub.com

enter code: 14366

$ 1.00 for 5 Disney Blu-Rays (20 cents each)
(optional) $11.95 for Bonus Blu-Ray #1
(optional) $ 8.95 for Bonus Blu-Ray #2

$21.90 Total for 7 Disney Blu Rays (shipping is free on first order)

after that, you need to purchase 3 Blu Rays within the next 24 months to fulfill the commitment of the membership.  the first bonus counts toward said commitment, so that makes 2 you need to buy at membership price within two years, though from what i understand they must be at least $29.95, $3.95 shipping charge per blu-ray.

comes out to $89.70 ($9.96/blu) for nine disney blus.  this includes animated/family films (pixar!) as well as "grown-up hits."

i just signed up.  my membership hasn't processed in full yet but my first 7-for-$22 are:

toy story 1 & 2
ratatouille
a bug's life
the prestige
the rock
nixon

i would say that this is a pretty ridiculous deal that's too good to pass up.  disney blu-ray prices coast pretty steadily in the upper tier without any significant drops, even during major holiday sales, and certainly not down to $10 a pop.

there is, of course, a hook.  the disney movie club sends you buying opportunities with featured titles and whatnot.  you get a minimum of 10 days to respond to these notices, after which you automatically receive the title and are billed for it.  so a heads up for those who decide to go through with this.  check their emails diligently.

I have been reading over these posts trying to understand how this works. For example, I have Eyes Wide Shut on regular ray. If I sent it to them it used to be they'd send back the exact Blu-ray copy. Now if I send them, say The Notebook regular ray, they'll send me Eyes Wide Shut?

Hmm.  Pretty much everything they're offering that I would actually want, I've already bought because they've been selling them at Best Buy for $9.99.  There's still a couple in there I need to grab, though.  And I definitely have the shitty unwanted DVDs to trade for them.  I knew that accidentally buying the pan-and-scan version of Minority Report at a garage sale that one time would pay off someday.

Correct.

Picked them both up. Magnolia at $9.49 is a steal and that's the best price I've seen for Boogie Nights. I'm still on my Amazon trial so I've been buying crap for a whole month, but this makes it all worth it.

At Amazon, Magnolia Blu-Ray is $9.49, Boogie Nights Blu-Ray is $12.99.

Finally time to upgrade Magnolia, then. I was at Best Buy over the weekend and I got excited when I saw that the Magnolia blu-ray had a sale tag underneath it. It was marked down from $24.99 to $24.00.  Fuck you, Best Buy.

Oh, Best Buy is the WORST!  Over Christmas I was there with my brother just marvelling at how expensive everything was.  I was going around with my Amazon app on the iPhone where you can scan the barcode and it'll bring up the price and EVERY SINGLE Blu-ray that we scanned was cheaper online.  Between like 3 and 12 dollars cheaper.  It was crazy.  As I said on Twitter (http://twitter.com/modage/status/17288861986070528),

Best Buy: we're fucking you because you waited too long to order from Amazon.

Yes, Black Friday. They were the only store in my area offering a sale like that. I have a friend who works at moviestop, and even his discount wouldn't have saved me as much.

Amazon had the same deal (http://xixax.com/index.php?topic=4523.msg298453#msg298453).  Sales like that are the exception for BB, but that's the only time you can consider spending money there.

Does anyone have Amazon prime? I'm on the trial and thinking about paying the $79.99 to have it for the year.

When I buy from Amazon, I always wait until I have $30 worth of stuff to qualify for free shipping and usually end up getting things I don't want. With Amazon prime, it's been awesome. If I want something, I can order it and get free two-day shipping and usually the item is shipped on the same day I order it.

No, you can have different credit cards on your profile and multiple destinations. When you get to checkout, you just have to say which card and location you are going to use. I have two locations and three different credit cards on my Amazon prime account.

Just got this email from Criterion

Quote
We will be announcing new Blu-ray and DVD editions of Solaris as part of our May lineup. We now know that the black-and-white scenes in the film were meant to be tinted blue, and we have updated the feature accordingly. The supplements from the original DVD will not change.

The old DVD edition is officially out of print. However, we are offering it at a 65% discount from the SRP at criterion.com (use the promotion code RHEYA at checkout). We have a limited supply and will fulfill orders as soon as we can.

If anyone wants to pick up the soon to be out of print (but is going to be reissued on a new DVD and BD) double-disc DVD it can be has at the Criterion store for less than $14.

Where do you americans buy the cheapest dvds online? I don't mean cheapest good movies or cheapest new releases or criterions or whatever. I mean a place where you browse through a list of 3000 shit tiles and find 3-4 that look not that bad and they cost like $3-4US?

Does that exist? I read in the papers this morning that DVDs are on average 28% more expensive in Canada than US even though our money is worth more than yours. And I can find 5ish bucks dvds here if they are shit here so....

That's a crazy good sale. I have most of them already and the ones I don't have, I'm not really interested in. Thinking about getting Blow Out, Kes and the Double Life of Veronique, but they would all be blind buys. Really want Modern Times. Grr.

Everyone else should do yourselves a favor and pick up that America:Lost and Found boxset. It's one of the best sets I've ever seen and at that price it's a steal. Cheapest I saw it before was at $65 (which is what I bought it at). 7 movies (some good, others great) at that price is ridiculous. It's worth it for Easy Rider, Five Easy Pieces and especially The Last Picture Show alone.

Fucking piece of shit Amazon is charging me 50$ for shipping of my 8 blu ray order (including the america lost and found, so 15 blu I guess)

This is so fucking annoying because if I take the order from Amazon.ca it's free shipping but the prices are 200% higher or more. Newsflash: the canadian dollar is WORTH MORE THAN THE US DOLLAR. And this is gonna stay like that for the next 20 years, deal with it damn it.

Oh well, still a 15ish$ average price for each blu which is awesome.

Probably because the Canadian dollar is worth 0.0476 more than the American dollar, which is slightly less than a 200% difference.  And Criterion is owned by an American company I'm sure.

What? No offense but go do your economy class again.

If americans sell to americans something for 20USD, they make MORE money by selling it to canadians for 20CAD. So when they sell it to canadians for 40CAD, it's just screwing them over. (What I mean is amazon.com=20USD and amazon.ca=40CAD for the same blu ray)

Also don't talk to me about shipping because if they warehouse is on the east coast it's way more expensive to ship to California (which they do for free) than to Montreal. And if it's on the west coast then it doesn't matter because they'd still charge me the same awful price if I was living 30 miles north.

Title: Re: Post your DVD Deals
Post by: Mr. Merrill Lehrl on April 26, 2011, 06:59:12 PM
I imagine you have considerable more experience in these matters than myself, agreed.  I was simply working off personal experience, i.e. the rare times I purchase an imported Canadian blu-ray (Cannibal Girls for example) and pay more, which I assumed (yes I know the expression ass u and me) had something to do with importing or fees or godknows what.  And simply the tiny bit of difference between currency rates doesn't seem to offset these matters.  Also Amazon.ca doesn't appear to be running a sale.

Though I know for sure it's not 'way more expensive' to ship to west coast USA compared to east coast USA because it's a national rate based on weight and has nothing to do whatsoever with travel distance (is it like that in Canada?  bizarre).  So, you know, don't talk to me about USA shipping, and no offense but go to your USA shipping class again, sassy.

Hahaha ok got me on the shipping thing I guess: canada is mileage+weight

as for currency: when the canadian buck was worth 0,70usd it was the same difference in price between borders. So basically americans now make 30ish% more selling to canada than before

we're even I guess, forgive the rudeness, getting raped makes me irritable.

feeling strangely magnetized by "classic dude movies." classic dudes are so industrious you can't bother them, because then no work will get done, you know, they're the ones doing all the work, classic dudes stay busy doing work and kissing babes. that's the tradition. here's the sale roster:

Robocop Trilogy Collection $13
Rocky Heavyweight Collection $19.50
The Mel Brooks Collection $22.50
Steve McQueen Collection $16
The Hannibal Lecter Collection $13
The John Wayne Film Collection $19.49

thinking:

rocky
what really can anyone say about all the rocky movies? has anyone traveled beyond rocky 1? what's that like? maybe asking about rocky movies is as hopeless as asking about godzilla movies

steve mcqueen
i know he's prettier than sly stallone simply because he talks less. i could use a quiet and beautiful hero. four times. THE GREAT ESCAPE / THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN / THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR / THE SAND PEBBLES. i've seen the great escape and i didn't like it. thomas crown affair seems guaranteed. i both definitely want this and i'm definitely considering rocky over this, for some reason

mel brooks
basically this is a jk. i've tried him, boy i've tried. his reputation is being funny in a contextual way, and he doesn't work for me, he's like family guy funny to me. something like that, something like family guy, in which i see what's happening and what's being used and everyone is so imaginative and playful and wonderful and i want to hang myself in the kitchen. this is cheap and i'm still ehhhhh

john wayne
if i buy the john wayne set i'll probably watch 1-2 of the movies over a period of 2-3 years, and i bet i'll have a thing or two to say about each movie. something to consider

Doesn't even sound like you're interested in these. Did you just come into an inheritance or something?

…or meet a classic dude you're trying to impress?

First off, Robocop 2 and 3 are NOT classics. Scratch that one.

I would suggest buying the Rocky collection over Steve Mcqueen, seems more like a sure thing. People reference the Rocky sequels all the time for their goofy moments. I haven't seen them, but I think you'll have fun.

Save your money, bro!!

You must be in your 20's or less, or grew up without cable TV to not have seen any of the Rocky sequels. I think I've only seen the original once, but I've seen 3 and 4 tons.
I watched 3 not too long ago and it was pretty fun. If you don't know who Hulk Hogan and Mr T are, it may not be as enjoyable. Eye of the Tiger didnt come along until 3.

this post is for wilder, I bet

this big deal that's getting online movie shoppers excited:

I'm going to reverse rationalize the purchase of two, I think, and I'm currently considering:

River of Death
The White Buffalo
Convoy
Miracle Mile
Deranged
Paris Blues
Gator
Late For Dinner
Woman of Straw

is anyone, including not-wilder, but also wilder are you familiar with any of the movies I listed?

Paris Blues but I can't remember it. Images from Miracle Mile look interesting but I haven't seen it. You should make Coming Home (http://www.amazon.com/Coming-Home-Blu-ray-Jane-Fonda/dp/B00MYMT9W2/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1438896933&sr=8-2&keywords=coming+home) a part of your life

this is less impressive but way more fun than making considerations during the Criterion sale. trailers --

The Emerald Forest, my favorite type of trailer because a hilarious version of this would be exactly the same
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hVsYLjEtWbY

Miracle Mile is an LA movie and my most likely purchase
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yK6th2tOqSo

Convoy is a Peckinpah movie I haven't seen, it deals with truckers and blue-collar friendly people, why am I waiting, what am I waiting for? realized Gator is the sequel to White Lightning and I should see those movies at some point too, but Convoy is the most pressing

The White Buffalo has pros and cons and I can't decide
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cp17j-fQkWE

Late For Dinner only has this one short odd trailer on Youtube, when I searched once

Went with: Coming Home, Miracle Mile, Cherry 2000

Miracle Mile and Cherry 2000 are both directed by Steve De Jarnatt, so I'm going to learn about him and I'm excited. I believe, through my current guessing, that more people in the past wanted to be and got be like Steve De Jarnatt. He wrote Miracle Mile as well. Cherry 2000 was written by Michael Almereyda, who also wrote Twister (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0096321/), which if you haven't seen Twister that's a life mistake you've been making if you're a fan of Harry Dean Stanton or Crispin Glover, if you liked e.g. Home (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1319569/).

Spent money which I wish I had more to spend. Almost got Harry in Your Pocket (http://www.amazon.com/Harry-Pocket-Blu-ray-James-Coburn/dp/B00VHAG2UE/), to save $2, but I felt like I could guess what kind of good that movie will be, and I lean toward Cherry 2000.

This screencap increased my interest in Zone Troopers (http://www.amazon.com/Zone-Troopers-Blu-ray-Tim-Thomerson/dp/B00X99C9LM/) and I hope to one day make it real:

Genuinely want to one day see Zone Troopers:

And it's not a part of the sale, but while clicking around in relation to this sale I was reminded I need to see Knightriders (http://www.amazon.com/Knightriders-Blu-ray-Ed-Harris/dp/B00C7E3EIM/) at one point, for varying reasons:

He also made the best film version of Hamlet (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0171359/?ref_=nm_flmg_wr_10), which doesn't get a quarter of the love it deserves.
