I don't see the meaning of the sentence "we don't much care for hitler" (of course we don't). I don't know...that name always disturbs me and I think it's somehow inappropriate for a place like this. Just an opinion.

I thought maybe the hitler thing was a joke, like that's the one and only thing we might all be able to agree on.

Well, I don't think it's funny. This name shouldn't be used in jokes. But I cannot explain this rationally.

I think the hitler thing is pretty funny...anyway, I think jokes about hitler can be funny sometimes...my sense of humor is pretty dark, though...I can see why someone would be offended by the banner, but I don't think that that's the intention.  I think Godardian's right in that that is one statement that we can all agree on...basically the only statement we can all agree on.

I will now tell a joke but if you don't want to hear a joke about hitler dont read it....

I guess I figure that if Ben Stiller and Mel Brooks can treat Hitler lightly, it's probably okay. He deserves no deference. I think it would've made him feel like more of a failure for us to laugh at him than to give his name some sort of wide berth befitting intimidation.

Don't be so sensitive, Chris Kelvin.. When Wendys took away the Monteray Ranch Chicken Sandwich, I was upset. No, upset is the wrong word; I was heartbroken. Not only was I shocked, and offended at Mr. Thomas' decision, but I was depressed. I thought maybe I could go and start a picket line in front of Wendys, but I figured it's a waste. They'll probably bring back the Monteray Ranch sandwich one day, and when that day comes, I'll be waiting for it. I really miss that sandwich actually. These days I get the spicy chicken sandwich, which is great, but I really miss the days of that Monteray Ranch chicken sandwich with large peppered french fries, and a sprite. It puts a big smile on my face just thinking about it. The salad dressing on a chicken sandwich is really an innovation. Speaking of chicken sandwiches, does anyone here eat at Chick-Fil-A? They claim to have pioneered the chicken sandwich, but that's just a gimmick. Some farmer probably did it hundreds of years earlier. Still though, you gotta love Chick-Fil-A's french fries. I think their fries are their real innovation. They look like little mini-waffles, and they're so delicious. I don't buy chicken sandwiches from Chick-Fil-A, I usually get chicken nuggets and barbecue sauce (but I make it a habit to get their large fries). I actually haven't been there in months though. It's never been a priority, you know? I know that Chris Kelvin knows what I'm talking about.

well i can understand the whole issue but come on, its not a "pro hitler" kinda joke...

this is something that always annoyed me when i was in college. you cant even mention hitlers name without having a uproar, regardless what is said about him. that and mentioning that im part german.

we must never forget the past. never mentioning his mame or the war and acting like it never happened not only stops us from understanding past mistakes and making sure we dont make them again, but i also feel its disrespectful to those that the war affected.

You see, that's exactly what I wanted to say: once Hitler's name is mentioned, a lot of people immediately start joking, mostly in a provoking, sometimes even childish way. The issue is not wether it is funny or not, and I certainly agree with cecil b.demented that it should above all not be considered as a tabu subject, but it is rather an unsensitive approach to a not so far away part of history.

I think we all know your political standpoints. At first, a comparison between the situation in 39 and today's Middle East is ridiculous and dangerous as well. Second, I was only talking about the fact that some people deliberately lied right at our faces in order to obtain their political goals, wether they are acceptable or not. And I don't like that.
Title: the marquee
Post by: SoNowThen on June 26, 2003, 01:13:56 PM
Fair enough. It just seemed like you were trying to make the comparison, that's why I jumped in there with the heavy sarcasm.

To contribute to the actual topic: I do think we should make fun of Hitler. Humor is often the best (and sometimes only) way to deal with some of life's greater atrocities and injustices.

have you considered that this statement on the banner i made might not be sarcastic or joking at all---in the sense that we really don't like hitler?  or do you believe that we should never speak of hitler again because he was such a horrible person, because i do know people like that.

Well, I don't really like South Park, so I don't like their parody of Hitler. (I think it was the little fat one who wore a Hitler disguise, right?)
And I don't know who SNL is.
The only Hitler parody (I don't like to use this expression) I "like" is Chaplin's in "The Great Dictator". As always, Chaplin is marvellous. Yet, he said himself that he hadn't made this film had he kown about the concentration camps. I think I agree with him. Chaplin was one of the greatest. Is there a category for him in "Director's Chair"? He deserves one.

I have already said that I don't want to declare Hitler as a tabu subject, not at all. (Again, we shouldn't use the name as representing evil itself, for Hitler had a few million little helpers...)
I don't think the banner was intended to be serious. A lot of people wrote that they find it awfully funny. Anyway, the banners on the top have always been an area that doesn't necessarily deal with issues like these. But I don't want want to criticize you, don't get me wrong. If most people like it, keep it up there. I don't want to be undemocratic.

Quote from: themodernage02so sphinx, what are the actual origins of that statement?  what were the artists intentions behind it?

after having visited the republic of south tanganea and questioning its inhabitants about their living condition, they presented me with six large baskets of partially melted wax and mangoes which they thought was gold.  this assumption was based on the fact that ny'jub had left an obscene amount of mangoes on several naturally growing cubes of wax because he had heard that a new girl was coming into the village at around that time, and he wanted make his best impression on her (for we all know that mango pickers are almost at the middle of society

- king
- king conditioner
- apprentice
- gift tender
- minister
- musician
- mango picker
- banana grower
- fish catcher)

so he skipped off to the center of village to meet the girl.  meanwhile the mangos (far away from any animal's reach atop the cubes of wax, with the exception of the birds who were busy eyeing the new girl in town to see when she would drop dead) began to rot in the sun as the wax melted.  the two substances fused together to form a muddy orange/yellow solid when night came, and when the locals found it (except ny'jub) they absolutely went berserk.  ny'jub had been murdered several hours after his mangos had began the rotting process as the girl was really a hired assasin who mistook him for a korean arms trader named randy trumpeter.  his corpse was stashed in the volcano and she continued to live a long, happy life in the village after that incident.  the birds ate her when she died.  anyhoo, the locals found these slabs of what they assumed was gold, chopped them up finely into power and placed them in six identical baskets as a gift to the king.  the gift tender, whose son was the mango picker was frantically looking for his son and thus could not supervise the gift giving to the king.  in his absence, the baskets of gold were mistook for a basket of condoms which had fell off a double hijacked plane (MIT graduates planned on making a condom airstrike at their own campus, so they hijacked an army storage jet, accidentally took three lefts instead of two at the mountain, ended up above mexico and were hijacked once again by a group of communist parachuters who took the plane by storm and shot all the grads in a ritualistic style, except for the pilot who they forgot about.  as one of the communist parachuters entered the cockpit, a fight ensued and several buttons were pressed, one of which opened the cargo bay doors.  the grad shot the communist parachuter in the arm, he collapsed in pain over the control and the plane began flipping.  this box of airtight condoms that had fallen out of the plane remained remarkably intact, landed in front of the minister's house who assumed it was a sign from god, and put it in his sacred shrine of signs from god.  the plane crashed into his house (he lived on the other side of the volcano where no one lived, nobody really noticed anything other than a faint boom).  the box of condoms flew high over the volcano, and landed directly beside the gift tender's house.  the king was delivered the box, which he used all 362 condoms for preserving different kinds of legumes.  i, on the other hand, was waiting by the shore, just about ready to leave on my boat.  i lugged all six baskets of wax and mango (the stench was awful), and not wanting to be rude, i wished everyone good luck.  the king presented me with a legume, so i decided to eat it there, and at the sight of the volcano erupting behind everyone, i choked in surprise, and a portion of the legume landed in my lung.  this portion happened to be infected with a moderately nasty little bacteria who ate away at your bronchial tubes.  and not wanting to disturb the locals, i told them nothing about the erupting volcano (fearing they would want my boat) and i set off back to north america.  halfway through my journey, i began coughing violently (on account of the bacteria) and had very little gas left in my boat.  i realized that i could travel further by dumping all the baskets off the boat, so i moved them all to one side, and decided that i would start throwing them off.  unfortunately i had balanced the boat perfectly with all six baskets, so at this time the boat began to tilt at an angle i can only describe as uncomfortable.  at the point i was unable to breathe even though i was above water (my bronchial tubes were almost demolished), and the next thing i knew, the boat had capsized and i was underneath it.  the baskets began to sink down, and in doing so, all the powder exited the baskets when the flaps opened in a violent motion.  still keeping above surface although unable to breathe, i noticed all the powder had floating to the top, forming a foamy surface free of any water.  wanting to see sunlight in my last few seconds of life, i tried to take one last gasp of air while going under the surface, and in doing so i inhaled a good section of the powder on the surface.  the salt in the wax reacted with antitoxins in the mango, killing all bacteria that had multiplied in my lungs.  i surfaced on the other side coughing and hacking, and collapsed onto the top of the boat.  after several of hours of sleeping on top of the boat (seals had come and stolen my wallet moments after initally sleeping), i awoke and detached the motor from underneath.  realizing it was a dangerous but entierly necessary thing to do, i straddled the motor, put my feet on the front of the motor, and pulled the cord.  exactly one and two thirds of a mile later, i slipped off the back of the motor, the blades sliced one-two-three-four-five-six times into my tailbone, and the motor went flying off in a million different directions at once.

blood, sure, severed tailbone, definetly, true love?  no.

i don't like communist parachuters.  i definetly do not care for hitler.

Probably because of his weak lyrics. She probably left him for Mr. Popenheimer. Now that guy has got skills.

my sophisticated tastes are offended by the banner on the top left.  just because we dont have a foreign films forum, do we have to make light of it?  i mean, thats discrimination.  and its not funny.  couldnt we just say something like

XIXAX: for the average-pulp-fiction-lovin joe.

or maybe just

XIXAX: no foreigners!

i dont know.  but the way it says we have something and then revokes it, bothers me.

I referred to the expression "euro trashy" as being commonly used by non-Europeans, no let's say by Americans, in order to show their contempt for the old continent. Yes, that really offends me. That's called xenophobia, which we Europeans have experienced a lot in hundreds of years. And yes, Europe is scarred by past evils. But scars are constant reminders of things you shouldn't repeat. As for our present evils, I think we have no more problems than the rest of the Western world . Additionally, I would like to inform you that there are not "lotsa skinheads" around here. I've actually found that the Communists I've known watch wayyy more movies than, say, the Christians (with the Christian Communists falling somewhere in between), but, um, I don't think I'll be submitting a banner saying "Christians don't watch movies."

That Communist banner should only run with a cap from an Eisenstein film, or something from Bertolucci or late Godard. Now that would be funny!

I didn't realize that an untiring capacity for critical thought and analysis was equivalent to being oversensitive... but I'm definitely not going to stop thinking. I found the celebrated joke lame and unfunny- does having an opinion mean I'm oversensitive, too?

:?:   Some people find anything that challenges their opinion to be "whiney," which is a complete (and likely purposeful, judging from the source) mischaracterization of the tone of my posts. I guess if opinions contradicting yours force you to get small and stoop to name-calling, that's your business; it only reflects poorly on you.

That is surprising, but... I definitely don't find it nearly so clever as some of the banners that have been popping up. The problem iwith banners is that there is no context... it can only say what it says, and it would have to be meticulously worded for any irony to come through. Anyway, I'm not saying to remove it or anything remotely like that- some people were exploding with "LOL"s and I saw fit to give my opinion. That is all.

Sorry if you took it the wrong way GT. Respect you in every possible way, and enjoy pretty much everything you write, even if I don't always agree with you. I consider my poke harmless fun, sorry if you didn't, though I realize your third person critique of yourself might be a little sarcastic.

Anyway, some new considerations:

The only problem I could have with your label is with the French part, but I thought they had some of the best movies of last year so I can't complain. Now, if you said "Hollywood Elitist", I may have some problems.

No, I got it from an SNL earlier this season which, as a pleasant coincidence (i.e. one of the funniest episodes of SNL in ages) reran last night.  ;)  Christina Aguilera has surprisingly good comic ability.

Gotta say, though, the "Xixtinguish Your Passions" banner?  Not really good, considering the nature of the site.

True, PTA is so few years ago.
Paul W.S. Anderson on the other hand...

Xixax.com: Your mother sucks cocks in hell.

How about clever wit about the flicker films of Paul Sharits?
Or the experimental works of Brakhage.

"We know what Dog Star Man is about."
"Mothlight is mainstream."
"We liked Brakhage before he sold out."
"We sat through N.O.T.H.I.N.G."

Eh, I'm tired and procrastinating.

Xs

X is the thing, and S is the word-final morpheme that makes a thing plural. apostrophe denotes ownership or partial abbreviation. it is not a plural marker. same mistake is made commonly with numbers. 90s -- that's how you write the nineties. not 90's. the confusion there is that an apostrophe is needed before the number, '90s, cos you are abbreviating "19". but anyway, that was the joke.

Quote from: wikipediaIn the US, it is generally accepted to use apostrophes to show plurals of single lower-case letters, such as mind your p's and q's. However, this is far from universally accepted practice, and instead of writing "ps and qs" which may look slightly confusing, many editors recommend "Ps and Qs" or "Ps and Qs."

So I tried to Googlizinate it and found that's how most people were writing it (didn't hit Wikipedia though, shoulda).

I know, I know, it's spell check, not grammar check.

GT is becoming one of my favorite posters on here... I don't care if he hates everything the rest of us love. He's intelligent, informative, and has the balls to say it no matter how it sounds... The latter last of those is the reason why he's like Bill O'Reilly. But I despise Bill O'Reilly and I'm starting to love GT....Awwwww....

On another note I'm feeling much more positively about the world and my enviorment lately. Starting to love myself again...."ewww you're sick Silias"

yep, i saw it on TCM last night. incredible film.

the one frame with the Beaver is pretty cool. i might like the socks with the red tips more though.

btw - i'm beginning to the The Man Who Knew Too Much is in the public domain - i think that might be the most played Hitch on TCM.

If there's anything good from the last few months that people wanted marquee'd and we didn't get around to it, let me know and I can make some more.

Jerome you got some pretty good classic stuff in there! No Peckinpah and Kurosawa is pretty evil.

also, really funny the people who go: ''look, really sorry... like, I don't want to say it but... I've never seen any film from Gloder Van Vorkenson... yikes!''

...... guys.........

fuck this is just unforgivable.......

ah shit I'm sorry ok I know I talked shit about these films and I know I pretended I saw them ok.

I've never finished a Quentin Tarantino movie. I started Jackie Brown I think. The rest I just talked about by reading IMDB. I just hate Tarantino ok!

So yeah... pretty awful I guess  :yabbse-undecided:

Not at all. In fact I did read the entire thing cause I still needed a bit more context, and it was kind of everything you'd want in a thread. Funny, revealing, down right heated at times. And you guys didn't mention all the other marquees that were born unto the thread: how to steal dvd's, gone with the wind, spaceballs.. a couple others? That was an awesome idea an Pas' part. But shit, Boogie shut off halfway?  haha Damn.

Also, the more I read old threads and sorta come to recognize peoples' likes and dislikes/personalities etc., the more I realize, I'm starting to really like this place

ehh, you know what? I'm not even gonna bother with taking the screenshot, too much time and effort when all I need is a simple answer. So, assuming that one of you admins put the picture up, you must know what movie it's from, correct?

Here, I'll describe it:

A shadowy figure is in the foreground, holding a knife. In the background stands a scared, curly headed kid. They seem to be surrounded by lockers or something. The sun is shiny and desaturated outside.

for the longest time, this picture screamed Rob Zombie's Halloween to me. It reminded me of the scene when the Spy Kid gets his ass whooped after school, but that wasn't the grown up Michael who did it, and not with a knife.
( Plus, most of you guys hated that 'Halloween' so no way it's going up there. ) So, kindly tell me what movie this is so I can go out and rent it, thanks.
