Title: UC Berkeley Q&A Session - Mar 9th
Post by: Trent on February 25, 2006, 06:25:07 PM
(https://xixax.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ocf.berkeley.edu%2F%257Esuperb%2Fimages%2Ffilms%2Fpta_full.jpg&hash=31367dc6f4d91fdcd6e4ae02ae1f9dcf0a241973)

I can't go to this, but it would be fantastic if someone brought in a video camera or audio recorder and posted the content or a transcript online afterwards for everyone to enjoy. I'd pay for a tape if anyone here COULD record it. I'm interested in hearing this, so would anyone want to try this out?

Got my ticket!

THANK THANK THANK YOU for posting this.  I will look into possibly bringing a camera or some such thing, if I can, and if it's allowed.

Do they generally allow video cameras into this sort of thing?  There isn't a film screening, so I don't see why not.

I think if I wore or made an XIXAX t-shirt, he would either definitely answer my questions, or definitely avoid me.  I'll think about it.  Or better yet, a t-shirt that says: "I am matt35mm from XIXAX.COM, the film forum for which your (unofficial but still most official) website was the genesis, Sir." or something to that effect.  Dude'll know wassup.

Eee, I'm excited!

I went to "An evening with Robert Towne and Paul Thomas Anderson" at Cal State Northridge right before Punch-Drunk Love came out and was so pissed that I didn't bring a camera.  I don't recall noticing any video cameras but there were plenty of stills.  Got to meet and greet with him afterwards where a point and shoot or camera phone -- ANYTHING would have come in handy.  But all in all, shaking his hand and chatting with him for a few seconds could not be beat.

Also, I stood in line to ask a question but didn't get my turn, so get on that right away if you really want to.  It really sucked actually because I was nervous through most of the thing thinking of what to ask which ruined my enjoyment.  Matt or Sal, I say you go balls out and ask him if you could be a P.A. or just that you want to be a part of his next venture in some small way.  He may respect and grant your wishes... or... not.  It could go both ways really.

please whatever you do dont ask him to be involved with his next film.  at EVERY SINGLE EVENT these guys go to somebody asks them to help get them into the biz.  its annoying and a waste of a question/his time.  it puts them in an awkward situation and he cant possibly help out the hundreds of people who ask him that favor.  its just like when you see a musician and everyone passes them their demo tape, its just not cool.  and during a q&a it's an especially groanworthy question for the rest of the audience.

The music engineer/producer Steve Albini has done a lecture/Q&A at several universities, and amateur video of every one has been on the internet. Video from different angles of the auditorium, even! I think you should call or go into that place and ask someone soon, so you can plan your recording.

There were a lot of great guest speakers as my shit school and it always depended on the guest whether or not they would allow it to be taped.  Kevin Smith = no.  Chuck D = yes.  I would call and please do your best to tape, it's for the good of the land.

Polkablues, I will think about asking if he'll sign your penis.

I'm still thinking about whether or not I want to ask a question.  That line I'll have to stand in sounds like a bitch.

I suck for not checking this forum often enough and therefore not finding out about this until this morning, but I just bought my ticket. Matt, have you found out about taking a camera yet? If I can, I'll try to borrow my friend's camera (the one that he keeps the tape of him having sex with his girlfriend in, but don't tell him I know that).

The reply I got said "no recording equipment."  You can take that to mean what you want, but I'm pretty sure still cameras are allowed.  They may say no flash photography, but I'm sure that after the Q&A, he'll likely be taking pictures and signing autographs and such, similar to the David Lynch Q&A at UC-Irvine a few months back.

I definitely plan to get some pictures.

It was Paul Thomas Anderson's first feature film although I heard he often refers to it as "Sydney".  I'm not exactly sure why... I will definitely be asking him about it on Thursday night.  I also want to know about that cool song he uses in all his films and what the frogs meant in Magnolia.  It should be a great night!

He hasn't seen Crash.
He hates parrots.
Someone asked about the frogs.
He likes Five Corners.

Other tidbits:
Somebody pulled the PA-on-his-next-movie stunt and it seemed to work.
PTA tollerates excruiatingly bad questions and comments very well.
Everybody feels the need to give their biography prior to asking their question.
It was a really nice and surprisingly intimate setting.  Not a huge room and I was pretty close.

Overall:
There were a lot of fun moments, and I could listen to him talk forever, but due to the difficulty of coming up with questions that he hasn't already answered in previous interviews, there wasn't a huge amount of new insight (except for when he relayed his experiences hanging out with Altman, including right before and after Oscar night).  A fantastic night, though, and a fantastic guy.

Yeah, somebody said that Crash was very similar to Magnolia and PTA made a comment about how similar Magnolia is to Short Cuts.  Then he asked the audience what they thought of Crash.  From where I was sitting, it sounded like more dislike than like, but there were some people around who cheered for Crash.  Then PTA said something like "It divides people." which produced a lot of laughter.

I'm sorry, but I don't think any of us took notes or anything, so we can only remember in bits and pieces as they come to us.

The other thing I remember is that in addition to Daniel Day-Lewis (with whom Paul said he'd like to work with again and again forever), There Will Be Blood will also feature Kevin J. O'Connor (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0640413/bio).  Other than that, it's a small cast with no one that anyone has heard of, he said.  So it doesn't look like he's re-teaming with any of his previous actors for this one.

He also said that the film will not feature the Hollywood segment from the book, even though he likes that section.  Otherwise, the film does take place near the Valley, which he likes.  It's his first time adapting, but he's got it to a point where it definitely feels like his now.  As was said before, it's a very loose adaptation.

He doesn't know what happened with Extraordinary Machine, and Ricky Jay is the coolest motherfucker except when he whines about small things, which he apparently has a habit of doing (PTA's example: "Ehhh, this coke is warm.  Are these bagels old?")  He also sees Altman as a father figure and has nothing but praises for him.

He came in very nervous, but later got pretty comfortable.  It went from about 8:10 (this is when he actually came out) to... 10:40 or so.  A good 2 hrs and a half, I believe.  Then he spent another 20-30 minutes signing stuff and shaking hands until he finally went backstage.

Oh, he had a coke and his day was "okay." (a question that was asked)

*One possibly psychotic attendee went up to the mic, threw his leather jacket to the ground, and proceeded to mumble incoherently about the "giant cock" in "Boogie Nights."  PTA, like the rest of us, looked a little perplexed.  The guy finally got around to asking PTA's opinion about digital vs. film, to which he replied that film will always be around, but that he enjoyed M. Mann's work in "Collateral."  He also mentioned a scene in "Collateral" which he thought was the "stupidest fucking moment" in the film, though I can't remember what it was (someone help me out here).

The scene with the coyote running by.

Quote from: Lucid on March 10, 2006, 04:53:13 PM*One fan gave him a list of movies he thought PTA might enjoy.  I'm drawing a blank on all of the films listed, though I know "You Can Count On Me" was on there - which we know Paul loved.

Songs from the Second Floor, Grave of the Fireflies (watch this one first!), Written on the Wind... there's more I think.  The only one of these three he'd seen was Written on the Wind, which he likes.

Quote from: Lucid on March 10, 2006, 04:53:13 PM*Another fan gave him a really awesome picture book of sorts w/images of Bjork, Kubrick on the set of "Full Metal Jacket," a record of Henry Gibson singing a song from "Nashville," and some random animations of a girl doing dance stretches.  He thought it was priceless, and said he'd see if things would work out with the dance images when he got back to his hotel room.

Shit, I wish I'd seen that.  I had to leave early, around 10ish.

I don't mean to sound completely ignorant, but I haven't seen Battle of Algiers (I plan on it) but what exactly is the connection between it and Boogie Nights? Somehow a film about, well, the Battle at Algiers and one about the porn industry in the 70's and 80's seem as disconnected as two films can be.

shit. i just realized that i forgot to reply to that PM about meeting up with you guys.

It was pretty cool overall. Like matt said, not a whole lot that you probably haven't heard/read somewhere else prior, except for the details about how he writes. He mentioned several times that he "practices" writing, just to keep himself sharp. He says that sometimes he'll watch a movie and then later that night he'll sit down and try to write one of the scenes in script form just to see how he would write it. Or sometimes he'll just sit down and start writing nonsense dialogue between two characters just to see how he can make it develop.

I hated that crowd though. Everyone seemed really god damned cocky and snobbish. Especially whoever the hell kept scoffing everytime someone would introduce themselves "Hello, I'm _____, and I am a writer/director/filmaker..."

Yes.

PTA ended up signing one shoe and drawing a nice little heart and arrow on the other.  (I was kinda lingering around all throughout the signing)

I think the stupidest thing about Collateral is how Jaime Foxx was nominated for Best Supporting Actor when he was the protagonist, the lead of the fucking movie and was in EVERY SINGLE SCENE!!!!  How in the effing world is that supporting???
Ok, so that's not really the movie's fault.

I wish I could have seen PTA live, but I don't live in California.  Can anyone who was there get really specific about how he writes?  It's been mentioned that he talks about this, but I'd love to hear even more about his writing habits if there is any.
Title: Re: UC Berkeley Q&A Session - Mar 9th
Post by: elpablo on March 12, 2006, 01:09:04 AM
I'll try to write what I remember and someone else will hopefully come along and add some more and you can piece together what you will.

I already mentioned earlier that he likes to practice writing sometimes just to keep his writing skills sharp and fine tuned. He said that his favorite time to write is in the morning right after he wakes up so he's still in a half-awake dream state. He likes it because he hasn't showered and stared at himself in the mirror and is still too tired to be self-conscious so he can flow better when he writes. Then when he's more awake he can go back and smooth it all out. When it comes to writing, he likes to keep his schedule routine. It helps him focus better. If he thinks the routine is slowing him down, he'll do something crazy like turn his desk around. Someone asked a question about how he channels his own pain and suffering to inspire himself to write. He replied that unlike a lot of writers who use their pain to drive them, he finds being busy, both literally and emotionally, to be distracting. It draws his focus into his own problems and away from the problems of the characters in his story, hence the desire for routine. He wants his world to be as close to perfect and non-distracting as possible so he can devote his undivided attention to the world in his story. He generally tries to stick to one story at a time. he doesn't like the idea of having too many ideas for different stories at the same time as it can get confusing and distracting.

The very first question was about how he developed the characters for his story (i.e., does he come up with a character and then write a story based on how that character would behave or does he come up with a story and develop characters as the need arises). He responded that since character and story are so closely related, it depends on the situation. Sometimes he will come up with a character and think about what he/she would do and then the story comes, other times a character will develop as necessary.

On the subject of developing his stories, he's not an outliner. He would much rather start with an idea of a sequence of events or characters and just start writing with out knowing where he's going. He thinks that if he knew how his story was going to end, it would "deflate" the experience. He likes the challenge of making progress with his stories and if he knows how the story is going to end and writing just becomes a process of expanding and bloating an outline, his career would not be as exciting. I liked this idea because having an ending in mind before the story is completely developed creates problems like deus ex machina - a writer has to force himself to the end. PTA likes his process because it makes for a more organic story.

The last thing I can remember is that he open to improv, he doesn't follow his script like scripture.

He might not have said all of that plain and literally, but that's what I gathered he meant from his responses, so anyone else who was there correct me if I'm wrong. He didn't seem like the kind of person who can be put on the spot and easily come up with answers and a lot of questions were answered with long "umms" and "I don't knows."

Yeah, surprisingly.  No films shown.  No questions from the moderater.  He just came out and started taking questions.  Super accessible.  We were all pretty close to him.  It wasn't a big stadium or anything.  It was smaller than a lot of classrooms I've been in.  I'd call it pretty intimate.  A couple of people walked right up to him during the Q&A to hand him something.  It was a pretty comfortable atmosphere, but still always a special moment.  And that was pretty amazing, because for me, this was as big a "celebrity meeting" as could be.  He's probably the biggest hero of mine, and I really enjoyed finding him to be so approachable.  It was inspiring to me, actually.  I think it always is when you meet your hero, and be able to poke through that mythic cloak and see him as a person.

The room wasn't totally packed.  And it felt like maybe 2/3rds of the people were Berkeley people who just enjoyed his movies and thought what the hell, might as well come see him, and then 1/3rd were die-hard fans, who travelled many a mile to see him for just a couple of hours.  I guess he's not as generally well known as I had thought...  For most of the people in the crowd, this was a pretty cool way to spend the evening, and for a select few, this was a night that would generate untold good vibes that could basically radiate throughout their life in a one-good-thing-leads-to-another sort of way.

Hopefully that conveys the mood of the evening for you.  The more I think about it, the more important and special it was to me.

P.S.  He did not specifically mention Maya's name.  A couple of people mentioned his "girlfriend," respectfully.  His mention of Fiona was only in discussing Extraordinary Machine (what happened with Brion and Apple during that, to which he replied "you'd have to ask them."), the Paper Bag video, and the show with Elliot Smith.
