I did listen to the Bryan Cranston interview on WTF. Wonderful interview. I've always liked Marc Maron, and he's a great and completely unique interviewer... the only problem is that his interviews are usually too intense for me. I feel emotionally drained after listening to them. Am I crazy?

Also, people need to listen to Pop Culture Happy Hour already.

This episode (http://www.npr.org/blogs/monkeysee/2010/09/17/129929400/pop-culture-happy-hour-meat-dress-90s-sitcoms-and-the-dog-bed-of-repose) is still my favorite.

Maron digs deep and doesn't shy away from the questions that are in the forefront of his mind, but not in an asshole way like Howard Stern. He seems to focus on people's insecurities and shortcomings as really juicy topics. You get the feeling that he's experienced enough failure and rejection in his own life, and now that he's becoming somewhat succesful he's just itching to hear those stories come out of someone else in a way you wouldn't expect.

Many of them are emotionally intense, but there are plenty that are less serious. The live ones are fun, and generally I've found that his interviews of improv comics aren't as dark as some of his interviews of stand-up comedians.

Todd Glass came out on WTF (http://wtfpod.com/) today. Really good episode. Possibly the best ever?

This is Todd Glass, BTW

Marc Maron is a goddamn interview wizard.  Why is he squandering his powers on comedians alone?  He should be out there making world leaders cry and confess their secrets.

Also, David Steinberg is already attempting to rip off his idea with a television show:

That's so bizarre. So it's not actually an interview show... it's a fictionalized interview show, possibly in the style of a sitcom? What?

I love Maron and have been listening to him off and on since episode 1 (even saw his live WTFs a few times).
I don't think, however; that he'd necessarily be able to pull the same out of non-comics.  He has a connection with these people.  They feel more comfortable with him because he's got the experience that he does and they know him and can open up for him.

I think if he got a show on TV that was interviews only, he'd have to start with mostly comics and branch out once his reputation got big enough for people to feel comfortable with him.  I also don't think that's exactly what he wants to do.  He's still a comic and he's a funny guy and he wants to be able to be creative and funny and not locked into just doing interviews.

Also, I love Todd Glass and while I'm not surprised, I am really glad he's gotten this stuff out.  It will only make him a better comic.

Yeah, exactly. He found his legs talking to comics, writers, actors, and directors. No need to sacrifice entertainment for the greater good.

Ira Glass was a fellow radio host.

Ugh... you got me there.

Still, you really don't think he could pull it off? Ira Glass for example was really guarded and even nervous in that interview, but Maron managed to get all sorts of things out of him. And not because of radio host camaraderie (IIRC).

He did great interviews with Jon Hamm, Bryan Cranston and Anthony Bourdain, all non-comics. I think he can pull it off.

I'm a Maron addict now, thanks to you guys. Can't wait to listen to Todd Glass.

By the way, I assume most of you caught the Patrice O'neal podcast a few weeks back that he reposted when Patrice passed away? I love his comedy but man was he a shamelessly misogynistic son of a bitch.

Yeah, he was shamelessly racist and prejudiced too. As misinformed as he could sometimes be, I just loved his don't give a fuck attitude. On O & A (http://struff.com/oaaudio/PatriceONeal-WorstOf-2006To2011/), he would often go on some tangent about women or race that would make me so pissed at him, then turn it around and have me laughing by the end.

I wonder what people's favorite episodes are? Conan's interview was the first one to draw me in and show a different side of his personality that just made me so excited for this show. I wish I could get WTF premium, there are too many episodes that I've missed.

Bourdain considers himself a comedy writer of sorts, John Hamm is part of the UCBWest comedy scene, and Cranston's roots are in comedy.

STILL, I'm not saying he wouldn't be able to handle non-comedy, I'm saying that it wouldn't be as natural as it is with the comics AT FIRST... the man's pretty amazing and I'm sure his reputation alone would eventually make a lot of people at ease with him.  Comedy aside, there's something about being able to open up to someone who is so openly neurotic.

He could have a show where he sticks to interviewing performers/artists. It's a pretty large category and a pretty deep well, and none of that would be a stretch for him, even at this stage.

But mostly, I'd like to see him in a shorter, better-produced format.

He's my favorite podcast personality right now between 'Legion of Skanks' and 'The Bonfire' (although the latter is legit radio). I'm not sure of one to recommend, there's an entire episode where they rip Tom Hanks' rapper son 'Chet Haze' a new asshole.
http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=nF2IQpOyXlw

pretty much just awesome broadcasting down the line, though. I haven't heard anybody riff like these two in years.
Here's a collection of them: http://m.youtube.com/results?q=the%20bonfire&sm=1  the most recent one was centered around 'Christmas memories' with a large chunk of the discussion devoted to action figures.

I wanted to post here that Paul Dano's interview was really good yesterday. Just going through his career up until this point, he seems like one of the luckiest actors of his generation with the parts he's landed. I appreciated his openness in talking about his process as opposed to John C. Reilly's seemingly walled off talk the other week. He doesn't want anyone to think they know the real him because then we might be able to see though his characters if we know every aspect of his personal life, spiritual beliefs, politics, etc... Definitely an approach that's working for him but with a guy who plays such endearing people onscreen you kind of wanted a sense of chumminess in that interview which totally didn't happen. Slight detour, but Dano is a very thoughtful dude and he seemed willing to explore anywhere the conversation went. There's a little chunk on There Will Be Blood, no stories from the set or anything but he mentions how much of an uber fan of Paul's he was before then and that Punch Drunk Love is one of his favorite films

Ron Perlman's recap (http://www.wtfpod.com/podcast/episode-741-ron-perlman) of working with Brando on the Island of Dr. Mureau is fucking hilarious and had me in tears. It starts at the 1 hour 18 min mark.
