whatever happened to that Del Toro project (w/ Michael Mann) where he plays some sort of business tycoon in Los Angeles?

i remember seeing a trailer for it a year ago, but never heard about it again...

oh yeah, it was called Lucky Star.

edit: nevermind...

There are shadows in life, baby.

Mr. Brown

That was a car commercial sold as a trailer for a fictional i.e. not existing movie.

Though it was directed by Michael Mann i believe.

Nice!
I'm happy about that, Hunter S Tompson is the man!
But can it be anywhere near as good as Fear and Loathing?
"There was a fantastic universal sense that whatever we were doing was right, that we were winning. And that, I think, was the handle - that sense of inevitable victory over the forces of Old and Evil. Not in any mean or military sense; we didn't need that. Our energy would simply prevail. There was no point in fighting - on our side or theirs. We had all the momentum; we were riding the crest of a high and beautiful wave.
So now, less than five years later, you can go up on a steep hill in Las Vegas and look West, and with the right kind of eyes you can almost see the high - water mark - that place where the wave finally broke and rolled back." - Hunter S. Thompson.

Holy fucking hell-yes!  That's my favorite book!

mindfuck

Awesome to hear. I always wondered if Del Toro was going to try his hand at directing (again).

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl and Once Upon a Time in Mexico star Johnny Depp is joining the adaptation of Hunter S. Thompson's classic The Rum Diaries. Benicio Del Toro, who co-starred with Depp in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, will direct.

"Diaries" is about love, treachery and lust amid the palm tree-lined setting of San Juan, Puerto Rico, in the 1950s.

Joining Depp will be Josh Hartnett, Nick Nolte and Del Toro, who also will act in the project.
"Don't think about making art, just get it done. Let everyone else decide if it's good or bad, whether they love it or hate it. While they are deciding, make even more art." - Andy Warhol

this film just got better now that depp joined on.

Anachronism

While the prospect of Josh Hartnett in this film gives me some cause for alarm, Nolte, Del Toro and Depp are such phenominal onscreen catalysts that quite frankly I think we could safely say that even the prop-comedy/acting stylings of Carrot top could only but briefly distract from the overall accomplisment of the picture. I honestly can't wait, I think I may have to start stalking Johnny so I can get some advanced goodies.

Ghostboy

I think that, given the right project, Josh Hartnett can be very good. He was great in The Virgin Suicides and Blackhawk Down, and he's shown signs of being a really smart guy.

This movie has jumped to the top of my anticipation list.

Duck Sauce

Quote from: meatballWhy Josh Hartnett? His brow is so strong that it would beat me in an armwrestling match. No... really though, why Hartnett?

I dont like hartnett as an actor, and not for the snob reasons like him being in pop movies and being a heart throb and all.... he just seems like a very unnatural actor who is always reading cue-cards or just got finished reading his lines, briefly memorizes them, recites them and forgets them a second later... not my type

prove me wrong JH....prove me wrong

THIS IS THE COOLEST MOTHERFUCKING PIECE OF NEWS I'VE EVER READ!

Oh my god. Seriously, I'm crying of joy, I really am. It's too much to even dream, and well, there it is. FUCKING 'A! The director of my favorite fucking film, adapting a novel by my favorite fucking author.
