Title: QUENTINS TOP 10 OF ALL TIME
Post by: modage on June 08, 2003, 11:17:14 PM
just in case anybody hasnt seen this list.  i thought you tarantino fanatics might be interested to know the mans Top 10 (well, technically 12).  but if you wanted to get a hint of his influences here they are...

-THE GOOD THE BAD AND THE UGLY (Leone)
-RIO BRAVO (Hawks)
-TAXI DRIVER (Scorsese)
-HIS GIRL FRIDAY (Hawks)
-ROLLING THUNDER (Flynn)
-THEY ALL LAUGHED (Bogdanovich)
-THE GREAT ESCAPE (Sturges)
-CARRIE (De Palma)
-COFFY (Hill)
-DAZED AND CONFUSED (Linklater)
-FIVE FINGERS OF DEATH (Chang)
-HI DIDDLE DIDDLE (Stone)

interesting that Howard Hawks is QTs favorite director.  this list is from Sight and Sound.

I think it is hilarious that he voted for Coffy on Sight & Sounds list.

yeah, it is.  but its kind of cool that he doesnt try to put on a snobby like "foreign films are the only films" type thing and just gave his HONEST top ten favorite flicks.  very cool.

On Charlie Rose, he said Blow Out (De Palma) was one his three favorite films of all time so hmmm. I personally hate Blow Out but that's just me.

In all fairness, my "top ten" changes every time I say it. Not that I like the earlier movies less...its just I name off the first 10 movies I love that come to mind. I'm sure it's the same for QT. Before he said that, they were discussing Blow Out which is no doubt why it was on his mind.

Blow Out was such a dissapointment for me.

As a note: A lot of people voting for Sight and Sound never really give their personal top ten lists because they know many movies they think are the best stand no chance with this poll and alter their list in accordance to what has been popular in Sight and Sound past so their vote counts more.

Blow Out is a great film and I always recommend it.

Blow Out is De Palma's best film and one of the best films of the eighties, an era where not many had the imagination to goof on Hitchcock AND Antonioni and create something so full of zesty cinematic life in the process.

Nancy Allen was like a breath of fresh air from another era; a snappy comedienne possessed of both sex and a great sense of humor.

Great list.

I've seen all but "Hi Diddle Diddle". Just saw "The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly" on the big screen @ Film Forum a few weeks ago. It's Leone's director's cut. Amazing film!

Poster Boys
Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez, the B-movie-loving auteurs behind ''Grindhouse,'' show EW's Chris Nashawaty -- and now the rest of us -- their 10 favorite movie posters

Quentin Tarantino picks: Coffy (1973)

''Not only is it a great image of [Pam Grier], it's got great type — it's the epitome of a great exploitation poster... and every version of it in foreign countries rocked,'' says Tarantino, who, more than two decades after Coffy, directed Grier in his own Jackie Brown.

(https://xixax.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg2.timeinc.net%2Few%2Fdynamic%2Fimgs%2F070321%2Froadwarrior_l.jpg&hash=208a832aa8e37ee5abff188f9fb78d9eecf23b68)
Robert Rodriguez picks: The Road Warrior (1981)

Otherwise known, of course, as Mad Max 2, the action flick starring then-up-and-coming Aussue Mel Gibson.

(https://xixax.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg2.timeinc.net%2Few%2Fdynamic%2Fimgs%2F070321%2Fwhereeagles_l.jpg&hash=4cb545e88ccf5c9fb51dcd12d77ce5ecb6e7c077)
Tarantino picks: Where Eagles Dare (1968)

''I love the great drawn action posters,'' says Tarantino about the one-sheet for this WWII flick, starring Richard Burton and Clint Eastwood.

(https://xixax.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg2.timeinc.net%2Few%2Fdynamic%2Fimgs%2F070321%2Fscanners_l.jpg&hash=53c0d661878eb845e104efcb83b43a0824cac3d2)
Rodriguez picks: Scanners (1981)

David Cronenberg's sci-fi/horror flick about a ruthless group of powerful, mind-controlling psychics hell-bent on world domination.

Tarantino picks: Dark of the Sun (1968)

Also known as The Mercenaries, this one stars Rod Taylor and Jim Brown as — you guessed it — mercenaries, who travel across the Congo in search of a fortune in diamonds.

Rodriguez picks: Escape From New York (1981)

It's the dystopian cult classic that introduced the world to antihero Snake Plissken (originally played by Kurt Russell, a star of Grindhouse); will the poster for the planned remake (to star 300's Gerard Butler) be as cool?

Tarantino picks: Thriller (a.k.a. They Call Her One Eye) 1974)

In 2003, Tarantino told EW this Swedish revenge flick provided the primary inspiration for his Kill Bill, and was directly referenced in Daryl Hannah's one-eyed assassin. ''They actually have XXX scenes in the movie,'' said the director, who gave it to Hannah to watch. ''And Daryl said, 'Quentin! You gave me porno to watch as homework!' I was like, 'They're only certain scenes. And they weren't sex scenes. They were just degrading.'''

Rodriguez picks: Dawn of the Dead (1978)

No surprise that Rodriguez — the director of Grindhouse's zombie half, called Planet Terror — finds inspiration in George A. Romero's classic zombie movies; this poster touts the series' second flick, considered by many to be its best.

Tarantino's pick: It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963)

Simply ''a classic,'' Tarantino says of Jack Davis' poster, which features all the characters from the madcap ensemble comedy.

(https://xixax.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg2.timeinc.net%2Few%2Fdynamic%2Fimgs%2F070321%2Fevildead_l.jpg&hash=9a06551e4b09a05d2abad0b780e4eaaba15782fb)
Rodriguez picks: The Evil Dead (1981)

Sam Raimi's fantastically gory cult horror film, starring Bruce Campbell.

PS, here's Tarantino listing his Top 20 movies since he started to direct in 1992. If you remotely find him hubristic and obnoxious, you might want to skip this or you might just want to strangle your computer. The best part of it might be when the director calls, M. Night Shyamalan, "M. Night Shamala-ding-dong." Tarantino says "Matrix 2 & 3" "ruined the mythology" of the Matrix films and therefore bumps down the original "Matrix" on his list because of that and the only filmmaker to find two slots on his list is Boon Jong Ho ("The Host," "Memories Of Murder").

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wz4K-Rxx2Bk

Here's his picks, "Battle Royale," "Anything Else, "Audition," "Blade," "Boogie Nights," "Dazed & Confused," "Dogville," "Fight Club," "Friday," "The Host," "The Insider," "Joint Security Area," "Lost In Translation," "The Matrix," Memories of Murder," "Police Story 3," "Shaun of the Dead," "Speed," "Team America," "Unbreakable."

as far as the Asian ones go...

no chunking express?
his supercop choice was also questionable.
but it's true, The Blade is one of the greatest movies ever made.  Good on him.

The American choices are kinda funny.  I think it's just weird that he's picking such big movies when in other interviews he likes to drop festival films or cult films.

The Hollywood Reporter had a chance to ask Quentin Tarantino about his favorite films of 2009, and the filmmaker responded with the following eight movies...

1. JJ Abrams' Star Trek
2. Sam Raimi's Drag Me To Hell
3. Judd Apatow's Funny People
4. Jason Reitman's Up in the Air
5. Prachya Pinkaew's Chocolate
6. Jody Hill's Observe and Report
7. Lee Daniels' Precious
8. Lone Scherfig's An Education

Tarantino admitted that he has yet to see James Cameron's Avatar, Peter Jackson's The Lovely Bones or Clint Eastwood's Invictus, and that he needs to revisit films like Bright Star and District 9, as they might have the power to rise into his top 8. He also agreed that his film could not qualify for his list.

I'm happy Tarantino chose Star Trek as his number one. When I first watched the movie in theaters, I was coming to terms with how much it wasn't like Star Trek, but having recently watched it again and been able to distance myself from my original feelings, I actually really think it's great entertainment. An atypical reverse on my part, maybe, but I had the same thing happen with L.A. Confidential originally because the book outmatched the movie in every way, but a little time allowed me to come around to changing my opinion. Now between Mission Impossible III and Star Trek, J.J. Abrams is separating himself from other Hollywood filmmakers and making action blitzes that are pretty memorable.
Title: Re: QUENTINS TOP 10 OF ALL TIME
Post by: Stefen on December 15, 2009, 02:19:11 PM
I guess taking into consideration it's QT's 'favorite' films of the year and not the 'best' it's cool that he has Star Trek at the top, but I don't think great entertainment should be the sole basis for judging the best film of the year. Favorite is fine, but even then, I think Up is a far better favorite film. All Star Trek did was reboot an ailing franchise, sex it up, cool it up, make it younger and more hip, then play it by the numbers.

The list is just a safe list.  Maybe I'm just naive for wanting something provocative and off the wall from QT these days, but most of that list reads like People Magazines best movies of the year.

that list kind of angers me. he's ignoring so much. and so much relatively trashy genre stuff is clogging the upper levels.. like the 17 year list. the thing that really bugs me is the amount of attention such a crappy list will get.. tarantino sucks at lists.

Toy Story 3 Tops Quentin Tarantino's Best of 2010
Source: Thompson on Hollywood

Quentin Tarantino has posted his favorite movies of 2010, all twenty of them. Unlike many critics, Tarantino has no problem with citing movies that are popular hits. And he's seen his share of obscurities as well. Tarantino is an Academy member, though not a typical one. His taste is catholic, ranging from specialty and foreign films to raunchy comedies, animated family fare and big-budget actioners. His most surprising choices are two critical and box office studio failures that are as well-directed as they were commercially misguided: James Mangold's Knight and Day and Ridley Scott's Robin Hood. Wow.

1. Toy Story 3
2. The Social Network
3. Animal Kingdom
4. I Am Love
5. Tangled
6. True Grit
7. The Town
8. Greenberg
9. Cyrus
10. Enter The Void ("Hands down best credit scene of the year ... Maybe best credit scene of the decade. One of the greatest in cinema history." – QT)
11. Kick Ass.

And the runners up are
12. Knight and Day
13. Get Him To The Greek
14. The Fighter
15. The Kings Speech
16. The Kids Are All Right
17. How To Train Your Dragon
18. Robin Hood
19. Amer
20. Jackass 3-D

the guy always mentions films by his friends, he has no credibility with this shit. it's different when he speaks at length about a particular film he liked, but just making up a list as random as this one means nothing. that said, you can see he means the first 11 and then uses the "runner ups" to be friendly with some people. robin hood was bad any way you looked at it.

via Vulture (http://nymag.com/daily/entertainment/2011/01/tarantinos_20_favorite_movies.html):

"Notably not making the cut is Sofia Coppola's Somewhere, which was awarded the top prize at this year's Venice Film Festival by a jury headed up by Tarantino.

At the time, the Italian press speculated that favoritism had been in play, given that Tarantino and Coppola are friends and exes. Tarantino denied this, saying, "I wasn't going to let anything like that affect me at all ... I was just going to literally respond to the film. ... [Somewhere] enchanted us from the first. Being her friend didn't affect me or make me sway the jury in any way. We kept coming back to it, as one of us said, because 'it's a great fucking movie,' all right?" So either despite being a "great fucking movie," Somewhere wasn't as great as the twenty movies on his list; or it was never actually that great and Tarantino was playing favorites; or it was never that great, but Tarantino still thought it was better than the other movies at Venice, so he wasn't playing favorites; or he just forgot to include it on his list. "
Title: Re: QUENTINS TOP 10 OF ALL TIME
Post by: Stefen on January 03, 2011, 02:18:41 PM
Or it could have just been because Somewhere sucked. Which means Tarantino probably just forgot to put it on his list. At number 1.

And I saw Knight and Day and enjoyed it for what it is, but no way it belongs anywhere near a best of the year list.

and I'm glad Big ideas liked Repo Man too, and judging by his list this year, who gives a fuck what influenced him? That movie stands on its own as a classic without celebrity endorsements.

I don't care if Quentin or anyone endorses it, it's just that there are multiple Tarantino elements in that film where it's very hard to believe he never saw it - unless they were influenced by mutual older films? If not for the age or anything that ties it to 1984, I'm sure you could convince a lot of people that it was a Tarantino film in one way or another.

that, the general tone of the picture, the shoot out, the two criminals sipping on their drink straws, musical choices. that's all i can think of off the top of my head without watching it again.

from brief reading something like the trunk goes back to an earlier film though.

i don't see how it could taint your opinion of the film, it came out before QT, so it could only taint anything QT.

Why the fuck are you talking about repo man in this thread? Why even bring it up? This is not a chat room, man. Try to concentrate please, we are laughing at QT here, not pondering about the influence of repo man on him.

Where the hell is P anyway.

-Because this is a thread about QT's favorite films, which likely would thereby influence him.
-Because I just watched it and then this thread was magically reinvigorated.
-Any other questions?

If I may, I have one:
Why is the Sofie/QT Twitter thread already gone?

Quentin Tarantino Explains — and Regrets — Leaving Somewhere Off His Top 20 List
Source: Vulture

Quentin Tarantino's list of top twenty films of 2010 was greeted with much ado, not so much for the films that were on it (the list was topped by Toy Story 3 and The Social Network) as for a conspicuous omission: Despite raving about Sofia Coppola's Somewhere and handing her the Golden Lion at the Venice International Film Festival as president of the jury, that film was nowhere to be seen on Tarantino's list. So what happened? Since the September festival, did he decide that Knight and Day (No. 12) and Robin Hood (No. 18) were actually better than Somewhere? Vulture contacted him in California, and he stressed that his list gave the wrong impression. "I'm a little embarrassed by it, actually," Tarantino admitted. "Because it was never meant to be a dig against Somewhere, or Sofia. I simply didn't consider any of the films I'd seen in Venice for the list."

He says he avoided the Venice films because, "The world knows how I feel about those films already ... I put them in a separate box — I was on official duty at that time, not seeing the films theatrically, independently." In retrospect, he regrets not including Somewhere on his list. "Now I wish I'd put it on there — I didn't think anyone would pay attention," Tarantino admitted. "If I'd known it was going to get out, I'd have put it in my top ten." Tarantino declined to say which film on his current list would be dropped in favor of the Coppola pic — but surely the makers of Jackass 3-D (No. 20) are happy he went with his instincts.

let's face it- he would only rave about one of her films if he was trying to get in her pants, and he's jealous of Nolan and Aronofsky

I doubt he even saw Somewhere. It's obvious Tarantino doesn't watch any movies. His time in Venice was most likely spent doing huge amounts of yayo and contemplating his tenhead.

A curious omission from this list: Machete.

Alright, maybe "curious" is a bit of an exaggeration, but you'd think with all the collective dick stroking RR/QT participate in, and the fact that an additional Grindhouse property was made at all, the motherfucker would put it on his list. Maybe it's too blatantly in his wheelhouse to even necessitate mentioning.

I'm fairly certain they are both fake, still, it was pretty interesting and it's not like the thread existing puts the universe on hold.

I'm intersted in if the screenplay was any good, because you have to think there is some intelligence there to go that far - to take 2 fake Twitter accounts, post fake dialog between them, slip your screenplay in there, and then take it down pretty quick knowing anything once on the internet can be saved.

Kinda like taking two pieces of recorded music you don't own and mashing them up and then becoming a famous producer a la Danger Mouse.

I can't imagine anyone willing enough to write 124 pages just to put someone else's name on it.... as a joke?
What a waste of time that would be.
If some unnamed soul was bothering to write an original script such as this, i imagine they'd want credit for it, but they also need a proofreader.....

I guess they were hoping it was so good that the industry would start asking Sofia about it. Then when she said that was not her and asked who it was they would emerge from the shadows.

Quotenot a horrible list, kinda safe though.

I kind of thought differently. Wouldn't 'safe' be if his list had the same movies we keep seeing over and over again in most Best Of lists? I might not agree with him, but I think it's a little ballsy (funny, too) that he had Our Idiot Brother tie with The Artist.

Quentin Tarantino's Top 10 Films of 2013 – SO FAR
Source: Tarantino Archives

You might remember Quentin's list of favorites of 2010 and 2011, and so many of you have mailed us and asked about last year. Mostly because of Django Unchained, of course there was none such list for 2012. So a lot of you even made your own lists and sent those, which made for some interesting reading. I think last year was a great year for movies, and 2013 so far continues this upward trend, aside from the usual fiascos (not naming names here). So it's the fall, Scandal is back on (Kerry Washington is amazing as usual), and it's time to take inventory.... drumroll...

As an exclusive gift during the government shutdown, we're happy to present you with Quentin Tarantino's official list of his top 10 films of 2013 – so far. Bear in mind that the cinematic year isn't really over yet and the list is in alphabetic order. To my own personal shame I have only seen one film on that list so far, I will reveal which one further below.

1.  Afternoon Delight (Jill Soloway)
2.  Before Midnight (Richard Linklater)
3.  Blue Jasmine (Woody Allen)
4.  The Conjuring (James Wan)
5.  Drinking Buddies (Joe Swanberg)
6.  Frances Ha (Noah Baumbach)
7.  Gravity (Alfonso Cuarón)
8.  Kick Ass 2 (Jeff Wadlow)
9.  The Lone Ranger (Gore Verbinski)
10.  This Is The End (Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg)
So what do you think? Have you seen all of them yet? Post your thoughts in the comments below. The only one I've seen so far is This is the End, and I thought it was totally hilarious, one of the funniest movies I have seen in a long time.

I assume there's a possibility of an update to this list once the year is over, maybe even ranked, as this list is in alphabetic order. I am really looking forward to Gravity, I have heard a lot of great things about it, and it might be time to revisit IMAX, which I haven't experience since I was a kid. Thanks for reading, amigos. Make sure to follow us on Facebook, Google Plus and Twitter to stay up to date with the latest scoop on Senor Q, and a bunch of other movie bits we post there constantly, for example the pending release of The Big Gundown on BluRay....

naw he takes lists far to seriously to be so dismissive and contentious. however i think he can be very reactionary to popular opinion, like if something is shit on and he genuinely likes it, i could see him saying he loved it.

Here is QT's quotes from a playlist article on Lone Ranger:

"The first forty-five minutes are excellent," Tarantino stated about "The Lone Ranger" before conceding, "...the next forty-five minutes are a little soporific. It was a bad idea to split the bad guys in two groups; it takes hours to explain and nobody cares. Then comes the train scene—incredible! When I saw it, I kept thinking, 'What, that's the film that everybody says is crap? Seriously?' " So far, so good, but then the helmer gets into what didn't work for him."

"That being said, I still have a little problem with the film. I like Tonto's backstory—the idea that his tribe got slaughtered because of him; that's a real comic-book thing. But the slaughter of the tribe, by gunfire, from the cavalry, it left a bitter taste in my mouth," he said, continuing: "The Indians have really been victims of a genocide. So slaughtering them again in an entertaining movie, Buster Keaton style... That ruined the fun a bit for me. I simply found it...ugly."

"Making fun of this, when America really did it, it bothered me...That doesn't stop it from being a good film but they could have done without that," he added.

When the interviewer points out that "Django Unchained" had its fair share of gruesome depictions of slavery, Tarantino offers up a slight defense. "I didn't make 'Lone Ranger'...that's two different things. I did an examination of America. I tried to juggle with different things and, frankly, I think I did it better than them," he said. "I don't know, let's just say that it was ugly. And violent. And boring. And it happens right in the middle of the film's bad part, anyway. [laughs]"

Tarantino: Israeli flick 'best of 2013'
At South Korean film festival, iconic director gushes over 'Big Bad Wolves', calling it year's finest movie
Source: The Times of Israel

Quentin Tarantino is certainly not afraid of the "Big Bad Wolves." In fact, the neo-noir kingpin was so enamored with the Israeli thriller after viewing it at a South Korean film festival over the weekend that he took to the microphone and declared it the best film of 2013.

"Big Bad Wolves," from directors Aharon Keshales and Navot Papushado, is a gritty story of a vigilante cop (Lior Ashkenazi) chasing a child murderer. It's one of the darkest films to ever come out of the Israeli film industry, and it's been praised for its sophistication and subtlety.

The film, which played in official selection at the Tribeca Film Festival, was screened on Friday at the Busan International Film Festival in Busan, South Korea. Tarantino was at the fest to hold a talk with iconic South Korean director Bong Joon-ho. The talk, which was moderated by Variety's chief film critic Scott Foundas, focused on the duo's mutual admiration for each other and their work.

On Tuesday, Tarantino released his annual "10 Best" list, providing a run-down of the ten pictures the Academy-Award winning director feels lead the pack over the past twelve months. He had obviously not yet seen "Big Bad Wolves," however, because after popping unannounced into Friday's screening in Busan, he took the microphone at the post-film Q&A and peppered the directors with questions before gushing, "This is not only the best film of Busan, it is the best film of the year."

Kwenton Bellette of twitchfilm.com, a Canadian film news website, posted afterward that he was at the screening and agreed with Tarantino's gushing review.

"We love the film on Twitch and are so happy and excited to share Tarantino's praise and goodwill for the film," Bellette wrote. "I spoke briefly with Navot [Papushado] who was extremely giddy and excited."

Tarantino on Batman (if anyone cares):

"Batman is not a very interesting character. For any actor. There is simply not much to play. I think Michael Keaton did it the best, and I wish good luck to Ben Affleck. But, you know who would have made a great Batman? Alec Baldwin in the '80s."
