Quote from: CinephileI'd be happy just to meet them, tell them they're doing such a great job, and that if they needed anymore volunteers/employees, that they can reach can reach me right outside their offices -- because that's where I'll be sleeping.

Why don't we bust out the KY jelly and get it over with? They're getting paid for what they're doing. Does everybody who does quality work have to be praised and awarded?

Yes, because quite frankly, some people just get through life working.  They do half-assed jobs that anyone can do, and they don't really get thanked for it because they don't deserve it.  Criterion, OTOH, really goes above and beyond to provide film geeks like us with constant, uh, cinematic arousal, if you will.  So yeah, break out the KY or something, if that's your thing.

Of course.

Some people get paid to do good. Some people get paid to do evil.

SoNowThen

Plus, most of the people who do good get paid a lot less.
Those who say that the totalitarian state of the Soviet Union was not "real" Marxism also cannot admit that one simple feature of Marxism makes totalitarianism necessary:  the rejection of civil society. Since civil society is the sphere of private activity, its abolition and replacement by political society means that nothing private remains. That is already the essence of totalitarianism; and the moralistic practice of the trendy Left, which regards everything as political and sometimes reveals its hostility to free speech, does nothing to contradict this implication.

When those who hated capital and consumption (and Jews) in the 20th century murdered some hundred million people, and the poster children for the struggle against international capitalism and America are now fanatical Islamic terrorists, this puts recent enthusiasts in an awkward position. Most of them are too dense and shameless to appreciate it, and far too many are taken in by the moralistic and paternalistic rhetoric of the Left.
