Sigur Rós

I'm looking back on nearly 500 posts, and asking myself "Am I a nerd?"

Are we, the members of xixax.com, nerds?
:?

If you aren't then prove it.....

SoNowThen

Absolutely, totally. You know how excited I got when we did our "movies you wanna see on Criterion" posts? That's gotta be a nerd alert.
Those who say that the totalitarian state of the Soviet Union was not "real" Marxism also cannot admit that one simple feature of Marxism makes totalitarianism necessary:  the rejection of civil society. Since civil society is the sphere of private activity, its abolition and replacement by political society means that nothing private remains. That is already the essence of totalitarianism; and the moralistic practice of the trendy Left, which regards everything as political and sometimes reveals its hostility to free speech, does nothing to contradict this implication.

When those who hated capital and consumption (and Jews) in the 20th century murdered some hundred million people, and the poster children for the struggle against international capitalism and America are now fanatical Islamic terrorists, this puts recent enthusiasts in an awkward position. Most of them are too dense and shameless to appreciate it, and far too many are taken in by the moralistic and paternalistic rhetoric of the Left.

Of course, before that, I watched "George Washington" with her and tried to explain to her why it was brilliant, so I'm straddling the fence just a little bit.

I think "cinephile" or "passionate" or "devoted" or even "obsessive" are much prettier words than "nerd," but when it comes right down to it...
""Money doesn't come into it. It never has. I do what I do because it's all that I am." - Morrissey

"Lacan stressed more and more in his work the power and organizing principle of the symbolic, understood as the networks, social, cultural, and linguistic, into which a child is born. These precede the birth of a child, which is why Lacan can say that language is there from before the actual moment of birth. It is there in the social structures which are at play in the family and, of course, in the ideals, goals, and histories of the parents. This world of language can hardly be grasped by the newborn and yet it will act on the whole of the child's existence."

I don't know... some people give me a rather awkward look when I tell them that I watched a 4-hour-documentary (Chung Kuo, an very interesting movie) or even Sancho Dayu by Mizoguchi. ("A japanese film? With subtitles and so on?").
What shall I say?  I couldn't live without movies. Does that make me a nerd? I don't think so. Perhaps it depends on the perspective.

I prefer the term 'socially challenged' to 'nerd'.

Yes, to dance beneath the diamond sky with one hand waving free, silhouetted by the sea, circled by the circus sands, with all memory and fate driven deep beneath the waves, let me forget about today until tomorrow.

Nerd definition #2 = Me. Exactly. Hmmm.

I think people generally mean the single-mindedness and forget (or, more likely, don't know) the rest of the actual definition. I think single-minded pursuit is pretty admirable, but I people who actually use words like "nerd" or "geek" as an insult are frightened by anyone paying too much attention to/thinking too much about, well, anything, really. It only serves to show up the fact that they're complacent conformists who wouldn't go out on a limb and risk being called a name for something they really cared about.
