What do you think?  If yes, what do you think it would be for?  Writing?  Directing?  Producing?

writing, sadly he wrote magnolia at the same time as american beauty. any other year and he probably would've won....unless he was against Pedro.

I think he will, and it will be for writing.

I think he will for directing.  It may be some time (as he matures in style and ceases to end his Scorsese-Demme-Altman worship) but he will.

So he'll never quit it?

I doubt he'll ever win an Oscar.  It'd be nice if he did, but he's another Altman or Scorsese.  The kind of films he makes just aren't ever going to resonate with them -- at least until the dinosaurs there die off.

ignoring the double negative, (which ono already called u on), by ur corrected logic PDL should've won an oscar.

I think he is beloved enough by the acting community that he writes for, that he'll earn a Best Original Screenplay Oscar some year.

He's gonna need another Boogie Nights type film to have a shot at Best Director. Something that resonates with both the critics AND the general populace of moviegoers. And it probably can't be about porn.

i've seen Hard Eight few weeks ago, and it was great, more than great
for a first movie. Boogie Night made him famous, but it was a good movie, Magnolia was close to winning but the year was spectacular, PDL was too much for the people that awarded Beautiful Mind. If he makes weak film like Beautiful Mind, the statue is his. If he makes a movie like Magnolia, or PDL, he'll be praised, but the award isn't a sure thing, even though the film might be great. The thing is, if a director wants to get the Oscar, he has to tailor his story very carefully to avoid "dangerous  neighbourhood".

You got me there.

I don't see the double-negative in which you speak of.  I was simply stating that when (and I do believe he has the potential) he breaks free of his "mentors" and begins to develop the "definitive" PTA style, he has a shot.

It's funny because they love him in Cannes, probably their favorite young auteur. I guess he reminds them of Truffaut.

The European film community in general is really taken by his work. Oscars are important but when you think of guys like Stanley Kubrick or Alfred Hitchcock never winning an oscar (Kubrick won for S.E on 2001 but it doesn't really count at least to what he deserved.) Well it just makes you think the Oscars need to get better.

Anyway there's a lot to say on the subject but returning to the question I think he will win eventually. Although who knows. The Academy seemed to like him in the BN-Magnolia era. But with PDL, they completely ignored him. Before last years nominations in a press conference in Portugal; they asked him if PDL would get nominated or even win something. To what he replied: "Not this year they're still giving Oscars to little Ronny Howard for a Beautiful Mind"
And the academy is very sensitive towards that shit...

And between writing, directing or a best picture, before PDL, I would've said writing. It depends on what new direction his career takes, but he should win one for directing and writing.

A question off the subject... as usual...

Has he ever commented on David Lynch? Do they ever hang out?  Reason is Lynch was president of the jury when he won best director at Cannes 2002. Both chain-smokers and quirky-scallywags, I think they're both into movies to...

I think he will win by the way. Maybe a few colleagues in this forum will be part of the Academy in a few years voting for a PTA public service announcement....

.....i have always wondered this myself......there are similarites ..but i think that Lynch is not into films in a cineaste way like pta or tarantino......
everytime greg ask for questions i ask him this also......

Of course it would be nice if he won, great if he got the double for writting and directing - but it may be some time yet. And of course, we have no idea what kind of stuff he's gonna come up with in the future. And yeah, any other year and he'd have won for Magnolia. PTA does have a point though about all the Oscars 'Beautiful Mind' got. That's one thing I hate about the Oscars; it's just vote for your friends - like Renee kept getting nominated until she won. And LOTR this year - yes it was an amazing trilogy, but surely some *other* films deserved to win in at least one of those catergories this year...?

Send the abuse to the usual place...  8)

He won't win an oscar, and frankly I doubt it is even that important to him. Oscars are for people who care about whats being worn at the show. I doubt pta cares about that stuff. He'll always get nominated but will never win, sooner or later he will just stop showing up. And his movies will get better and better as he becomes more of a recluse.

From the portuguese edition of PREMIERE magazine of March, 2003:

Q: The Academy Awards are near. Would you like to win an Oscar?

A: Yes, sure.

Q: As a director or as writer?

A: I don't care, I just want to win one. It would be great to have an Oscar.

You can't win if you don't make movies, Mr. Paul Thomas Malick.

Post by: kassius on December 30, 2004, 11:23:31 AM
I don't think he'll ever win, until his movies become more mainstream and successful at the box office.  Because I think the true concept of the Oscars has gone down the crapper... like the Grammys.  There was a time when great musicians would win, now your record has to be in the top #10 to stand a chance.  It's like a Billboard awards... "mmm. I wonder what record is going to win for Album of the Year". duhh!!!

It used to be about who was the best... but the Oscars, like everything else, has become another huge night for Hollywood to rake in the dough.  ABC, CBS, FOX... all the big networks want this one because it draws a crowd.  They want to see the big directors, the sexy Hollywood stars, everything that makes it into a huge night for people who don't really even give a damn about the films. If it was about great films, and Joe Blow would come up to accept his award, who'd watch??? They want people in films that have captured audiences all year and created fan bases, so their fans watch and cheer them on.

I take more faith in Cannes, then I do the Oscars. There is a lot of butt kissing, and a lot of people winning because of demand and not talent.

Don't get me wrong, I'm sure the "Lord of the Rings" films are amazing. I hate fantasy, so I refuse to watch them, but I'm sure the academy had their doors knocked down for Peter Jackson to win it each year. And that is just more thing that pisses me off.

Quote from: ckad79They want people in films that have captured audiences all year...
yeah, uh cause that's like, what they're supposed to do. Who cares about the politics behind it, for the most part it is about great films. Lost in Translation was all over the damn show last year and yes, it was a hit but by word of mouth from critics and I know tons of mainstream moviegoers who hated it. And why does the Peter Jackson thing piss you off. You refuse to watch his movies, so you have no idea why he and the film raked in the nominations each year and won the final.
And also, if it "used to be" about who was the best, then how come Scorsese has never won.
And for my two cents, hell yes I think PT will one day. The man has miles to go and his best is no doubt yet to come.

Today in my ADVANCED screenwriting class someone actually asked "what was up with the piano?"  I explained and tried as hard as I could not to roll my  eyes when I did.  Advanced screenwriting, mind you.  PTA will win an Oscar some day bue it will be for the worst movie he ever makes.  That's how the Academy works.

There's a lot more I enjoy in Lost World than I do in Hook: I think the trailer/cliff scene is a great exercise in suspense, especially the glass cracking; the waterfall turning blood red when the guys gets eaten; the amazing shot of the rapors cutting through the tall grass; the dog house dangling from the T-Rex's mouth...

Like Batman Returns, I like how the tone shifted darker (almost black-comedic) from the first film to the second one. I'd even put Lost World above 1941.
