Title: Wolf Parade Lives! Also, Operators & Moonface (RIP Sunset Rubdown/Handsome Furs)
Post by: ono on March 26, 2009, 05:42:04 PM
I looked.  I coulda sworn someone started a Sunset Rubdown thread aeons ago.  Guess it was just a post somewhere.  Anyway, these guys deserve a mention (even though Stefen chose to hate 'em).

http://wolfparade.nonstuff.com/

Yep, they're at it again.  Hot off their 2007 album Random Spirit Lover, the best album of the year that no one listened to, they've got DRAGONSLAYER coming in June.  I've heard a lot of the stuff that'll be on the album live, and it's shaping up to be great (if a bit short).

Handsome Furs' FACE CONTROL leaked earlier this year, and was released a couple weeks ago.  Plague Park was pretty awesome as well.  And of course, Wolf Parade rounds out the trifecta with their classic Apologies to the Queen Mary and less-than-stellar but still strong At Mount Zoomer (with Frog Eyes there, but lagging a bit behind).

Naw, I like Arcade Fire.

I dislike most Canadian indie bands because they come off as very pretentious and the music they make isn't even something they should be pretentious about. Arcade Fire are mad pretentious, but they can back it up. Bands like Black Mountain, Wolf Parade, any variation of Broken Social Scene (Carl Newman, Faust, etc), Sunset Rubdown, etc are a lot of fun, but they're almost a little too ambitious for their own good.

I'm specifically talking about those bands I've mentioned and don't mean to pigeonhole ALL Canadian indie into the same criticism since I haven't even heard Handsome Furs or Magic Weapon or most other Canadian indie bands.

I agree with you about the pretentious thing, but only about the Arcade Fire, ironically enough.

One of the most obnoxious things I ever saw was the lead (don't even know his name) performing on SNL the song "Intervention".  Dipshit had the nerve to SMASH his instrument after the song.  Listen to the song.  Then imagine some jackass smashing his instrument after performing it live on national television.  Yeah.

As for "too ambitious for their own good," can't agree with you there.  When has ambition ever been a bad thing, especially considering how prolific Spencer Krug has been?

Do yourself a favor, get some Handsome Furs at least.  I seem to recall mod really liking them (not that that means anything :)).  I saw Magic Weapon live (opened for Sunset Rubdown).  Very impressive on first hear, and that's an accomplishment considering how hard it usually is to take in unfamiliar music live.

(Hey, neon -- haha, after all this time, you're still neon.)  I wouldn't know about the two you mentioned.  I've only listened to BSS briefly and never the other one.

I meant they act like they're too cool for school when they're really not. Maybe it's just that all Canadian indie bands are interchangeable, but I'm just not feeling most of the scene. It all sounds the same to me.

For the record, Apostle of Hustle's National Anthem of Nowhere made my top 5 in 2007.

EDIT: haha, I actually just rechecked my list http://xixax.com/index.php?topic=9770.msg247226#msg247226 (http://xixax.com/index.php?topic=9770.msg247226#msg247226) and I even roasted Canadian indie bands in my review of National Anthem of Nowhere.

QuoteNormally I hate Canadian bands cause they come off as self servicing (they give themselves blowjobs) and cheezy but this band is one of the lone exceptions. If someone says "What's indie music?" give them this album because it sounds like the quintessential indie album. The production is great too.

haha, can't say I'm inconsistent.

100% on you with that. I haven't heard of some of these bands. But, with arcade fire i know exactly what you mean.  My friends came to me with neon bible in hand and swore to fucking god on it.  I gotcha, I was just unaware of this collective Canadian, meaning, I didn't know that all these bands were from Canada.  But, that's because I really don't give a damn about them.

With that  being said.  If anyone wants to PM me some links for some shit that you would suggest. or throw them up on here, whatever. I'm definitely interested in seeing/learing more about this conglomeration.

You might be thinking about that time I asked about all the various Wolf Parade connected bands in the Now Playing thread.

I wanted to buy Face Control but the digi-pak in the store looked bent to Hell.

Swan Lake has a new one, too.

I could never get into that last BSS - I bought it when Best Buy had one of those cheap sales on indie type artists.

Um, just hear it all.

Sunset Rubdown might takes a while to click.  You could start with Shut Up I'm Dreaming, but I don't know if it'll take the first time around (except for They Took a Vote, Us Ones in Between, and Shut Up... (title song)).  Random Spirit Lover is a little bit more accessible, but it's also very rich, and I find it's easy to get lost in.  Every track on that one is strong save one or two, though.  Once you've taken to it, Shut Up will make a lot more sense.  So yeah, those two.  And then Apologies to the Queen Mary for Wolf Parade.  From At Mount Zoomer, Kissing the Beehive is all that REALLY matters.  Everything else is just okay, though I admittedly haven't listened to it as obsessively as Apologies.  For Handsome Furs, get Plague Park, then if you like it, check out their new one, Face Control.  Is there an echo in here?  Yeah...  If you really start to dig Sunset Rubdown, they have some b-sides and live stuff that's great, too.  Ditto for Wolf Parade.

Wolf Parade's got a new album June 29th.  Expo 86 is its title.  I just love that two such talented guys have so many things cooking, and nothing ever seems diluted.  Makes the wait in between projects all the more tolerable, especially since Sunset Rubdown just had a new (albeit slight) album last spring.

i streamed those two new tracks from Pitchfork and read the brief interview - i'm anxious to hear it as they say it was mostly recorded live, with only vocals done later.

i don't think i was ever totally knocked out by the Swan Lake and Sunset Rubdown albums last year.

Two weeks ago my brother and I saw Handsome Furs in Raleigh right before they were about to head out to another tour overseas.  They love it, we love it.  They're one of the best, most energetic and enthusiastic live acts I've seen, throwing themselves fully and physicaly into every song, giving such a memorable performance.  Dan came out clad in jacket which he lost after one song 'cause he was so hot.  His wife, Alexei looked all kinds of hot, complementing Dan's thrashes with her own jumping and bopping as she played her synth/drum machine and then crashed to the stage with (faux?) exhaustion after each song.  The couple actually remembered my brother and me from their earlier concert of two years ago in a nearby venue in Chapel Hill.  So before the concert, he snuck backstage and chatted him up a bit, and then when she came on stage, it registered with her again that yeah, you guys look familiar.  Dan's super friendly too.  Shook our hands, and we chatted for a bit.  Forget most of it, though.  Said though that their new album Sound Kapital had leaked, and this concert would be mostly new stuff.  Unfortunate, 'cause I love Plague Park so very much.  It's excellent driving music, especially through mountains and old cities.  Anyway, Sound Kapital -- check it out.  Like all projects from these group of guys, it's a unique beast to be absorbed and appreciated.

Oh yeah, and Expo 86 was just delicious.

Yes, love Handsome Furs. Saw them a few weeks ago for the 7th(ish?) time. I heard that Wolf Parade might be nearing the end so that looks like Dan's fulltime gig starting soon.

Their unreleased new album has leaked?

Is she wearing undergarments in that photo? I'll never forget her topless photo in the Face Control pictures. It's pretty small on the CD version though.

7 times?  That's pretty fortunate/lucky.  Dan said they were probably going to swing by again after the album releases and they're done with Europe.  He also said Wolf Parade isn't done.  I think they just need a break, but I seem to recall him mentioning about starting that one up again at the end of the year.

bigideas: Yes, it leaked.  I got it from my bro who probably got it from someone at the Nonstuff forums.  I ... was not privy to the Face Control photos.  Any links?  Strictly for scientific purposes, I assure you.  Anyway, http://wolfparade.nonstuff.com/ is where I go for most news/goodies.

Though I listed Random Spirit Lover as my favorite SR album (and favorite ever, basically), I can't help but love and appreciate what Spencer Krug did with Dragonslayer.  RSL only elipses it because there are two very weak songs on DS.  BUT, You Go On Ahead, Nightingale, and Dragon's Lair are especially magical.  See the former:

"When me and the boys were out, we killed a thousand butterflies so I put their wings into my mouth and said a prayer for our safe arrival. And then a big black car crossed our path and I wondered whether or not that shit was empty!  YOU GO!!!"  The ending is even more transcendental.  Six outta eight isn't bad for that behemoth of an album.

No links to the photos. One day I saw the Face Control vinyl at Hasting's in the Reduced bin for $3, I think. I didn't figure anyone around here knew who they were, so I didn't get it. Later it was gone. I already have the CD, but part of me wanted to see if the photos were blown up/bigger.

I wonder if they made some sticker to cover up the cover nudity for stores. Hopefully Hasting's carries this one.

Has the Moonface album leaked? I haven't looked into how that differs from Sunset Rubdown. Swan Lake may be due another, too.

Kaputt was received really well, though it seems to have already dropped from the public conscious.

Anyone heard the iTunes bonus track, Agony?

Yes, the Moonface album has leaked.  It is very different from Sunset Rubdown, and I don't know if I care for it yet.  Only one listen.  Shit-Drums EP was so great.  I'm always wanting artists to branch out, experiment, try longer tracks, so I'm trying to keep an open mind.  We'll see.  I do know that the odd-track out, the bonus one "The Way You Wish You Could Live In The Storm" is pretty amazing, though.  It's nothing like the album itself, which is one reason I perceive it as better.  Favorite on the album: ...I really can't say.  There's only 6!  It's between "Return to the Violence of the Ocean Floor" and "Fast Peter", but that'll probably change.

Well, not exactly "leaked" per se, but:

Quote from: wolfparade.nonstuff.comMoonface has a new song up for instant download called 'The Way You Wish You Could Live In The Storm' over at Moonface.ca. Here's his description of the song:

Here, take this. It's a song that was cut from the record – an angry duck that didn't get along with the other songs on the Organ Music LP. That is not to say it's a bad song (though not to say it's a good song, either), it's just something I made that I don't know what to do with. It's more techno, or something, than the rest of the Organ Music LP. Less silky. But still, I thought it was worth sharing, for anyone who cares. It's more than a pile of wet leaves. Maybe it's something you can listen to while you do the dishes, or draw, or teach your baby to dance. So if you're inclined, click on the link provided here and do with it what you will. The actual album, Organ Music Not Vibraphone Like I'd Hoped, is due out August 2nd, as planned, and that one I will demand your love for.

   Thanks,
   everyone and anyone,
for caring enough to get even this far.

   sincerely,
   Moonface

Handsome Furs is no more.  Dan Boeckner has teamed up with Britt Daniel (Spoon!) and some other dude to form Divine Fits.  New album coming later this year.

What's Spencer been up to?  Writing songs about hearbreak with Siinai, a second album for Moonface, which was released in April.

Alexei, left out in the cold.  Their six year honeymoon over?  Wolf Parade still on hiatus, but what they come up with while apart is interesting to see.

Julia with Blue Jeans On came out on the same day as Arcade Fire's Reflektor.  Julia is better.  Spencer's really matured and pared it down to the basics here.  I really miss the glorious excess of Sunset Rubdown, but this is something new and fresh.  It's just his raw, uplifting voice as he pounds away at the keyboard.  Barely a drum or guitar in sight.  It's a wonderful experience.  A slow burn.  A dreamy summer.  And yeah, black is back in style.

I'm still wondering why Pitchfork hasn't reviewed it yet. They even had the full album stream on Advance. I think this would be the first WP offshoot that they didn't review if they don't get around to it.

I don't get it either.  In doing a search to see if the article is up yet, I saw the first bits of some review stating that Krug has walked away from two critically acclaimed bands.  This much is true.  Wolf Parade and Sunset Rubdown are no more.  Krug was at least 1/5 responsible for Wolf Parade (all right, 1/2 if you only count songwriting), and like 90% of Sunset Rubdown.  I wonder where they would have been if he'd have kept at it with either of those efforts.  Clearly the acclaim means nothing to him.

Meanwhile, you have bands like Arcade Fire who have the same spirit, but have fine tuned their sound.  Think about it: if you looked at the state of things in 2004 when Arcade Fire first did Funeral and Wolf Parade was just awakening, would you really dream that Arcade Fire would ever go as mainstream as they've managed to go?  The pretention of Arcade Fire bothers me because their sound has become so mediocre.  Yes, Reflektor (the title song) is catchy as hell.  But Julia will stand the test of time as something heartfelt and meaningful.  And Spencer's doing it all alone now.

Definitely check out With Siinai.  Goes without saying.  But I'd equate it to Random Spirit Lover.  So yeah, Julia would be his Dragonslayer, too.

Dan Boeckner, teasing us, playing This Heart's On Fire with Japandroids earlier this week in Canadia. Do we know if Dan and Spencer hate each other now or just got really into doing their own things? Clearly, Dan still has some love for the old material, but I'm wondering if the inevitable reunion tour is gonna be strictly for the money or if its gonna be for the love of playing some of their best work together again (and the money). Either way they are getting my money.

Thanks for this thread btw, it got me into Handsome Furs and then Wolf Parade a few years back. Sound Kapital and Apologies in particular were a pretty big deal to me for a (not-so-good) stretch of time.

No problem.  This is great, thanks for the heads-up.  I'd heard about Operators a few days ago, but didn't realize they played This Heart's On Fire.  One of Wolf Parade's best songs.  Their live act was amazing.  Saw 'em twice.  Miss 'em greatly.

As for Dan & Spencer, probably just a matter of doing their own thing, growing artistically, and growing apart.  Almost as sad is his splitting with Alexei.  I can't get over how great a duo they were onstage as Handsome Furs.

Dan Boeckner's new project is Operators.  They performed on KEXP and it was amazing.  Their EP, creatively titled EP1, is out now.

Spencer Krug is at it again, too.  He holed up in Helsinki for a while and came out of it quite changed.  I miss Sunset Rubdown greatly, but he's definitely branched out and created a unique body of work in Moonface alone.  Here's a vid from his new EP, City Wreckers:

I'm still mourning the loss of Handsome Furs (had 3 of their songs played during my wedding) but already had a chance to see Operators once and they're pretty great.

Seeing them live was like crazy deja vu as Dan's new beau looks strikingly similar to his Alexi but the addition of live drums adds something cool to the mix. Not crazy about the EP yet but looking forward to what they do next.

My favorite thing about it is that they did it on the very last stop of their marathon, world-conquering Reflektor tour, back in Montreal where it all began. Must have been quite a moment for them.

"I have some friends that got famous, la la lala la la lala"

Whenever I hear that line I think of Arcade Fire, though I have no idea if that's who they are referring to.

Wolf Parade has reunited.  They have a four-track EP out now.  Here's one little ditty:

Others can be found off that one.  Available on Amazon and Google Play now.

Operators released an album a few weeks ago, too.

And Moonface also has an album coming up in June.
