What is the best cover ever made?

DJ Dingo doing Lady in Red? I don't think so...

The best?

Redirect if needed...what am I talking about. You'll be redirecting me before I post this. :)

The most overplayed would be Alien Ant Farm's cover of Smooth Criminal.

Fiona Apple, "Across the Universe." I think I like it better than the original. Plus, it has a better music video.

Metallica does do a decent cover of this song, but I think the fashion in which they did the song takes away from the concept of the song and what makes it great. The song is about being out on your own and when Seger performs(ed?) it, he basically did it all alone. He was on the stage just like the song, all alone, playing the star again.

HOLY SHIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I saw the White Stripes, live, and they did Jolene, and I about pissed myself!!!
You know what I loved the most? I hate it when people do covers and they change the words to fit their sex. Like if a girl originally sings it about a guy she'll say "he" or whatever, and vice versa and the people doing the cover change it to "she". I am not sure why, it's just a pet peeve of mine. But they (Jack and Meg) didn't change a word. So I just stood in the dark, surrounded by a haze of smoke, smiling staring into the night air. It was awesome.

As far as the Sonic Youth cover of Madonna,  they did it as Ciccione Youth in the late 80's,  but my best cover for the last 20 years... Patti Smith's "Gloria" but many others are great but escape my grasp...and my moment. A little too much Saumur... live life.

Morrissey would always leave the original gender intact in covers such as Twinkle's "Golden Lights," Cilla Black's "Work is a Four-Letter Word," and The Cookies' "I Want a Boy for my Birthday."

what about PEARL JAM!!!

i think pearl jam is one of the bands that have made more covers...and i think theyre great! sometimes the song sounds much better!...and hearing those covers alive is just...just....

i saw them on july 17 and 19 here in Mexico City.
the last concert (that was also the last one of the whole tour) was just amazing. They played some covers:LAST KISS, YOUVE GOT TO HIDE YOUR LOVE AWAY,KEEP ON  ROCKING IN THE FREE WORLD, I BELIVE IN MIRACLES, HUNGER STRIKE (i dont know if i can call this last one a cover....but it was awasome)and some of them with the help of sleater kinney...
they also play with a "mariachi" LAS MAÑANITAS (a birthday song) because of stone gossard's birthday; they wore "el santo" masks....it was incredible. one of my favourite concerts.

http://www.pjvault.com/coversA_H.html

another great cover is "heroin", cover of The Doors by The Velvet Underground.
and Patton!!!...well...i dont have anything more to say about him, youve said it all.

even though i love mike patton to death, it kinda sucks that he takes so much credit all the time. as far as i know then fanthomas is the only project of his that is fully his own, while in bungle and fnm he had no bigger creative control than any of the other members, everything in tomahawk is written only by the guitarist, and i think that most people see that as mikes group.

every bungle fan should give secret chiefs 3 a listen, which is basically mr bungly without patton and the saxophonist. they're really really great.

Jimi's version of "Watchtower" is the obvious choice, but then there's also Jeff Buckley's cover of the Smith's "Boy With The Thorn In His Side", Mayfield Four's cover of Marvin Gaye's "Inner City Blues" (BEYOND good... absolutely amazing), and A Perfect Circle's version of "The Nurse Who Loved Me" might be the best song I've heard in the last two years.  Of course, most reviews I've read of the album didn't even know the song was a cover.   :?

I remember when I first came to America, I was like 13, and I went to the mall's record store 'cause I wanted the top gun soundtrack.  I didn't remember the name of the movie so I just told the guy I was looking for music from this old movie that went like this: "dah dah dah dah dah" as I hummed the first five notes of "Take My Breath Away" and the guy went "yeah sure" and then came back with Sister Act ("I Will Follow Him.")

Quote from: bluemindedwhat about PEARL JAM!!!

i think pearl jam is one of the bands that have made more covers...and i think theyre great! sometimes the song sounds much better!...and hearing those covers alive is just...just....

i saw them on july 17 and 19 here in Mexico City.
the last concert (that was also the last one of the whole tour) was just amazing.

Definitely. Pearl Jam has done mega covers. I absolutely love their versions of Driven To Tears (The Police), Fortunate Son (CCR), Sonic Reducer (Dead Boys), Crazy Mary (Victoria Williams), Baba O'Riley (The Who), and of course all the songs you have already mentioned.

Other covers:
Stone Temple Pilots - Dancing Days (Led Zeppelin)
Stone Temple Pilots - Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Pink Floyd)
Black Crowes - Hard To Handle (Otis Redding)
John Melloncamp - Wild Nights (Van Morrison)
Joss Stone - Fell in Love With a Boy (The White Stripes)
The Eagles - Ol' 55 (Tom Waits)
Bruce Springsteen - Jersey Girl (Tom Waits)

Like every artist has covered Bob Dylan- Knockin' on Heaven's Door or some other Dylan tune. Dylan rules all.

Morrissey has recently been including a pretty fantastic cover of Raymonde's "No-One Holds a Candle to You" in his set list.

Other Moz covers:

w/ The Smiths:

-"What's the World?" - James
-"Golden Lights" - Twinkle
-"Work is a Four-Letter Word" - Cilla Black
-"His Latest Flame" - Elvis Presley

Solo:

-"East West" - Herman's Hermits
-"That's Entertainment" - The Jam
-"Trash" - The New York Dolls
-"Skin Storm" - Bradford
-"Cosmic Dancer" - T. Rex
-"My Insatiable One" - Suede
-"Drive-In Saturdays" - David Bowie
-"Nothing Rhymed" - Gilbert O'Sullivan

...and of course, Nancy Sinatra has recorded a cover of "Let Me Kiss You" from You Are the Quarry

Santana-"Black Magic Woman" ( Fleetwood Mac)
Ray Charles-Georgia On My Mind (Hoagy Charmichael)
CCR-I Heard It Through the Grapevine (Gladys Knight & Pips)
Aretha Franklin-Respect (Otis Redding)

In regards to more modern covers,  I can't believe I didn't see a mention of Nirvana's Unplugged album which is almost half cover songs.

I'm sure it's been mentioned, but I don't want to wade through 9 pages. Ryan Adams covering Wonderwall is unbelievable.

Also Metallica's Garage Inc is amazing, especially covering Queen's Stone Cold Crazy.

I'm sure you've all seen the new Levi's commercials advertising their skinny straight leg jeans with someone covering Johnny Cash- Walk The Line.  I googled the shit out of the commercial trying to come up with the artists and came up with this:

"It is a modern version of the Johnny Cash song "Walk the line" the female version is sung by Megan Wyler, an American singer, she does not have any commercially released work as of today. The male version is Adem IIhan, who performs in the British band Fridge."

I like both.

my least favorite version of Walk the Line is by those three brothers, Los somethingrather.  that sucked.  my favorite version, don't think is the best version, is by dolly parton.

Thinking about putting together a cd of cover songs, even better if they're live cuts.

i was thinking about stuff like John Frusciante's Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow, Jolene by the White Stripes, Comfortably Numb by Van Morrison (I know this is still Pink Floyd too, but you get my point......)

Any suggestions?

First, I'd suggest...

http://xixax.com/index.php?board=17.0

Then I'd suggest a cool cover of "What a Wonderful World" by Nick Cave and the Flaming Lips.  Also, the "Moon River" cover by Vincent Gallo, John Frusciante and PJ Harvey.
