Title: Flying Lotus

Okay, there should be a FlyLo thread. Giving it a bit of a think, he has to be one of my favourite active musicians right now. He has always provided quality work ever since his very early material (July Heat) and now he's truly elevated himself above...pretty much everyone else. Cosmogramma was a remarkable work which caught me off guard with how unique it was and then he released my favourite album of 2012, Until the Quiet Comes which was unbelievable. Main reason why I have decided to start this thread is because he's gone into promotional mode for his new album You're Dead!.

Artwork for this album was done by the demented and talented Shintaro Kago. He's revealing the tracklisting through art pieces by Kago. Known album guests include Herbie Hancock and Kendrick Lamar, which is awesome. The official tumblr page where he's posting all this occasionally decides to screw up on me every few seconds though.

Anyway, I'm excited about hearing this album- he says it's like nothing else out there right now, it's weird and proggy, Captain Murphy will make appearances, it's darker than his previous work but there's a balance and a sense of humour to it. It's also his jazziest album yet (UtQC was  pretty much electronic jazz),  more on the jazz:
QuoteI felt like I wanted to hear jazz go in this direction. I've been wanting to make a record that's like a contemporary jazz record, not like what you hear in coffee shop jazz records. I wanted to make something that if Miles Davis could imagine what music would be like [today] it would be like this. I want it to be something that wouldn't let him down. I wouldn't want it to be some shit that sounds like him, I want it to be some shit that be like, "Wow, what the fuck are they on over there?" That's a pretty bold statement, right?

So overall it's pretty exciting and I can't wait to hear it. A sample or something, whatever. Some new material he performed live earlier this year:

Here's some of his earlier work:

With his old live band:

As his rap alter ego Captain Murphy (a lot of people, me included, are waiting for his full length album to come out):

He also runs a record label called Brainfeeder, which features great artists like Thundercat, Azizi Gibson and Taylor McFerrin.

No, I don't think so but there was a disturbing lack of thread in light of You're Dead!

Yes Punch!

I think Kahlil Joseph needs his own page, once the Kendrick Lamar short film, "m.A.A.d" with Fly Lo music/score drops, or heck maybe now as it just premiered at Sundance NEXT? For now can I take a liberty and post Kahlil's Shabazz Palaces short film here, and then a Fly Lo in-store performance I shot back at my favourite London record shop when I was a crazy Fly Lo fan. (Deal Real Records RIP)

Not so much a big fan anymore, although I will say 1983 and Los Angeles were dope and Cosmogramma starts off in the wow zone and peaks with the Thom Yorke track before dipping into stuff that for me, was a bit meh, and had me reaching for his auntie's back catalogue, especially Universal Consciousness and Journey in Satchidananda. Anyways, i'm glad he's making music, and will most definitely check the new LP and related short movies.

On some other memory lane ish, I found myself listening to Prefuse 73's One Word Extinguisher this week. What a trip! It still holds up and is still full of mischief and fun...

That's interesting because while I enjoy all his work, I thought he became truly special on Cosmgramma.

And here's FlyLo, Kahlil and Lamar at the first meeting which led to M.A.A.D.

Oh Shit! The gangs all there! Cool photo of the braintrust. They all look so serious though. Thanks for that Lottery. Make no mistake, I do rate him. I just think that album is a bit overrated.

Punch, I think he should be in the directors chair, is that cool despite his lack of feature films? I'm trying to imagine what a full length movie from him would feel like...a lot of inter-dimensional drift and float, with some dream anthropology, black mythology and great music???

....totally off topic, what the hell happened to Chris Cunningham??? Cinema needs him....off topic part 2, on a naughty steal-music-website, Shabazz Palaces were not filed under 'hip hop' or 'experimental' but 'mystery'. I think that's a pretty cool genre to be in...

FlyLo lends his talents to a short film starring Noomi Rapace.
Quote
Noomi Rapace by Aitor Throup

A portrait of the Swedish actor, scored by Flying Lotus

Today we launch a new NOWNESS with a film directed by British artist and designer Aitor Throup. The portrait of Swedish actor Noomi Rapace, soundtracked by mercurial artist Flying Lotus, is the result of an intense collaboration that sees the Prometheus star sculpted by Throup, and is based on his New Object Research concept. Ahead of the forthcoming Warp-released record You're Dead, Flying Lotus creates a cosmic score with a hypnotic ambiance for this seven-act piece. Read below for the artist statement from Aitor Throup's studio explaining the inspiration and nuances of the filmic trinity:

The film not only depicts a three-dimensional portrait of Rapace being intricately sculpted but also acts as a portrait of her by acting as a metaphor for the various chronological steps in the actor's process. Throup illustrates this personal and symbolic interpretation by splitting up the film into seven acts, each given a title which suggests an alternative interpretation of the sculptor and model as director and actress. The work depicts the actual casting and sculpting process developed by Throup over the course of 10 years to make his signature black mesh figures. Captured on location at the artist's own studio, this gives a real insight into this unusual and at times intense process.

Flying Lotus, the acclaimed, forward-thinking musician and producer provides an exclusive soundtrack. The material of six previously unreleased tracks was born out of conversations between Flying Lotus and Throup at the beginning of the project. The result is an extremely personal, hauntingly beautiful and subtly brutal documentation of a subject through the use of various layers of physical, literal and metaphorical processes—reflecting the complexities of not only the protagonist, but of all three artists involved.

He actually made some really cool beats for this (which isn't a surprise or anything).
