Title: Worst Song Of All Time
Post by: MacGuffin on April 21, 2004, 10:58:37 AM
What's the worst song of all time?
For Blender, it's 'We Built This City'

NEW YORK (AP) -- Starship may have built this city on rock and roll, but Blender magazine is tearing it down, naming the band's "We Built This City" as the worst song ever.

Some tunes on the "50 Worst Songs Ever!" list were selected for their melodies, others "are wretchedly performed" and "quite a few don't make sense whatsoever," the magazine said.

The list, which appears in the May issue, includes songs by New Kids on the Block, Meat Loaf, The Doors, Lionel Richie, Hammer and The Beach Boys, among others.

Blender describes 1985's "We Built This City" as "the truly horrible sound of a band taking the corporate dollar while sneering at those who take the corporate dollar."

Starship lead singer Grace Slick says, "This is not me," when the magazine reminds her of the tune. "Now you're an actor. It's the same as Meryl Streep playing Joan of Arc."

Rounding out the top 10: "Achy Breaky Heart," Billy Ray Cyrus; "Everybody Have Fun Tonight" Wang Chung; "Rollin'," Limp Bizkit; "Ice Ice Baby," Vanilla Ice; "The Heart of Rock & Roll," Huey Lewis and the News; "Don't Worry Be Happy," Bobby McFerrin; "Party All the Time," Eddie Murphy; "American Life," Madonna; and "Ebony and Ivory," Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder.

Other songs on the list: Toby Keith's "Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue" (No. 22); Whitney Houston's "Greatest Love of All" (No. 30); Ricky Martin's "She Bangs" (No. 39); Billy Joel's "We Didn't Start the Fire" (No. 41); Simon & Garfunkel's "The Sounds of Silence" (No. 42); The Beatles' "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da" (No. 48 ); and Celine Dion's "My Heart Will Go On" (No. 50).

Yeah, to have that but not "The Hustle" is ludicrous. That goddamned "The Hustle"... once you get that infernal, cheap and horrible little melody in your head, it'll never leave.

I agree that whomever placed "Sound of Silence" on there should be killed, or, at the very least, have their ears sliced off.

Where's some of the horendous music like "In the Zone" by Britney Spear and that horrible song by N.E.R.D.? Plus this list need much more Celine Dion.

On a similar subject , the Guardian wrote:

The 10 novelty songs

Silly? Childish? Irritating? Well, yes... but who's to say that there isn't excellence in every field?

1 Bob the Builder: Can We Fix It? (2000)

It's no exaggeration to say that much of Bob The Builder's success as a programme was down to a cracking theme tune. The ready-made fanbase meant that 'Can We Fix It?' was bound to be a hit, but it boasted production values that no children's TV theme had known since the heady days of The Wombles. Much of its appeal was down to Neil Morrissey having a thoroughly decent singing voice. Indeed, heard away from the telly, on a child-appeasing car compilation, his oddly soulful depictions of camaraderie in the workplace were rather moving - at least if you allowed yourself to forget that he was singing about his friendship with some slightly camp road maintenance vehicles.

2 Paul Mccartney And The Frog Chorus: We All Stand Together (1984)

'Play the game/Fight the fight/But what's the point on a beautiful night?' Three heartfelt minutes in an otherwise sloppy decade for Macca. Clearly those old Rupert annuals meant a lot to him - although recent interviews in which he admitted he was taught to kill toads when a cadet suggest this may have acted as a kind of belated apology.

3 Splodgenessabounds: Two Pints Of Lager And A Packet Of Crisps Please (1980)

It's a mantra we have all forlornly repeated as last orders approach and the bar staff appear not to even register your existence. Note how the will to live gradually drains away from Max Splodge's voice as the song nears its conclusion. Lest we forget, the B-side to this was called 'Michael Booth's Talking Bum'.

4 Bobby Mcferrin: Don't Worry, Be Happy (1988)

A perfect example of how a song can be stupid and profound at the same time. McFerrin lists a number of unfortunate predicaments but offers no word of advice on how to solve them. Instead, he just commands you to accept the present in order to deal with the future - while at the same time making funny noises with his diaphragm.

5 No Way Sis: I'd Like To Teach The World To Sing (1997)

Given that Oasis always had an ersatz air, there's little to distinguish the crunchy guitars on this sole release by these Scots chancers from the real thing - especially as this is the riff which the Gallaghers were sued for using on 'Shakermaker'. Bizarre postscript: regular work in Saudi Arabia has made millionaires of them.

6 Falco: Rock Me Amadeus (1986)

Two years after Milos Forman's Amadeus, Falco brought his genius to bear on the life of Mozart. That he managed to compress into four breathtakingly over-the-top minutes what Forman took three hours to achieve is not to be sniffed at. Following up such arrant pop absurdity proved difficult, although his duet with Brigitte Nielsen, 'Body Next To Body', was a creditable attempt.

7 Joe Dolce: Shaddap You Face (1981)

Now resident in Australia, the Ohio-born Dolce was inspired to write this by childhood memories of his Italian mother. Two years later, Dolce returned with the slightly less inclusive 'You Toucha My Car, Breaka You Face'. Strangely, it didn't do as well.

8 Right Said Fred: I'm Too Sexy (1991)

Why do focus groups suck? Because no focus group in the world could ever tell you that a gay skinhead and his brother could reach Number One in the UK and US by listing a load of things for which they're 'too sexy'. Alas, they weren't too sexy for Bryan Adams, who kept them off the top spot for six weeks with his crap Robin Hood song.

9 Doop: Doop (1994)

Isolates the exact thing about big band music that makes it menacing, in the process creating a whole new strain of lysergic terror with it. On 1993's 'Didgeridoo', The Aphex Twin managed to achieve a similar effect with aboriginal pipes - to considerably great critical acclaim. But then he wasn't Dutch.

10 Jilted John: Jilted John (1978)

In which the future John Shuttleworth articulated a truth that most teenagers have to square up to at some point. Good-looking girls don't care how clever you are if you've got a face like a car crash. Such was the popularity of Jilted John's refrain, 'Gordon is a moron', that it prompted (the unrelated) Julie and Gordon to release flop riposte 'Gordon's Not A Moron'.

Speaking of Nickelback, there was a link about two months ago that had "Someday" play out of the left speaker and "This is How You Remind Me" out of the right.

The sounds synched up exactly. Even the pitches, rises and drum crescendos were the same. Talk about your cookie cutter music.

The members of Creed have confirmed that they will split after almost a decade together. The announcement comes three months after Creed songwriter/singer Scott Stapp told Billboard that his bandmates would take a break.

In a statement issued today (June 4) and posted on the band's official Web site, Stapp says, "Creed was one of the most amazing journeys through music and friendship I am blessed to say I was a part of."

Creed's last studio album, "Weathered," debuted in December 2001 at No. 1 on The Billboard 200 and has more than 6.2 million copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan. A spokesperson for the Wind-up Records act says the band's three albums have accrued worldwide sales to date in excess of 30 million units.

Going forward, Creed songwriter/guitarist Mark Tremonti will collaborate with the band's drummer Scott Phillips, original Creed bassist Brian Marshall and former Mayfield Four singer/songwriter Myles Kennedy on a new project called Alter Bridge. The band's debut album will be released Aug. 10 through Wind-Up.

"It's kind of sad to end a chapter of your life, but it's also exciting to be starting a new one," Tremonti says in the statement. "We'll always be proud of the music we made with Creed, but Alter Bridge gives me the opportunity to start over with a different perspective and a more evolved direction. This band begins and ends with the love of the music."

An Alter Bridge promotional acoustic tour of radio stations is planned for the summer. A worldwide tour will begin in late August or early September. The band has already established a Web presence at alterbridge.com.

As previously reported, Stapp will contribute material to a compilation of compositions inspired by the film "The Passion of the Christ." The set is due Aug. 31 via Wind-Up.

The singer will also continue to work with producer 7 Aurelius, best known for his work with such hip-hop heavyweights as Nelly and Ja Rule, on his solo debut. Canadian rock act the Tea Party has been tapped to work on the set. Stapp has also claimed his own Web space at scottstapp.com, which promises a full site is coming soon.

Finally, Wind-Up will release a Creed greatest hits compilation later this year.

lol. I kind of like the song. I heard it last week after the hoopla broke and it stuck in my head. I then came home and watched the video a billion times. I had to come home to watch it because I didn't want to watch it at work and have it on my history making me look like a pervert. I'm really not.

The best part is when Ray Lewis starts rapping.

I just clicked it to see what you two were talking about, not knowing anything about the artist or song.  I kid you not, as I watched it, the Dislikes counted up below the video.  It went up by about 400 or so by the end of the song.

The best part is that in the description of the video is a link to her twitter, titled "Rebeccafanclub."

So, is this a joke?

This has been happening for the last 50 years. It's just that with the internet, it's sped up to take place over the course of a weekend instead of years.

It got stuck in my head too with how awful it sounds, that's why I gave you fair warning. The chorus is so bad it's good, the rest of the song doesn't rhyme at all but I might have to learn it anyway. AGGGGGHHH! What am I saying?!?

Repetition and simplicity can be effective... It's mostly meaningless and cliche crap that bothers me. (Again, see: Train.)

Catching up on this thread...

I watched all of those videos. Obviously "Friday" stands out. So yeah, I'm not sure if I have a soul left. I was completely prepared to enjoy them, and if not enjoy them maybe be amused, but instead I find myself depressed... and it takes a lot to make me depressed.

Remember when people were shooting down Avril Lavigne's debut album? Holy crap, that is a masterpiece compared to this. At least Avril was sincere, and honestly I feel much better now about genuinely liking some of her songs. In the same way that Michael Pollan talks about "edible food-like substances," we need to call this a music-like substance. What disturbs me most is the soullessness of it. Not the soullessness in Rebecca Black's face, necessarily, or even the soullessness of the whole arrangement—it's the soullessness of the song/video itself. The whole vacuous fun/party theme has ruled pop music for at least several years now. I thought Lady Gaga and Kesha were the logical extremes of that... but no, it's this. When her ultra-nasal voice sings "fun fun fun fun" through that forced-at-gunpoint smile, I honestly want to start crying. The most fascinating part is that they seemed intent on culturally transplanting her into some sort of synthetic pseudo-ghetto, wherein 13 year old rich white girls say "my friend is by my right, eyyy" and "we so excited, we so excited, we gonna have a ball today." Also see: Kesha. (Seriously though, was cultural appropriation ever so blatant? And why is no one talking about this?)
Title: Re: Worst Song Of All Time
Post by: Pubrick on March 23, 2011, 10:02:19 PM
No one is talking about it because its last weeks news. are you under the impression that this is popular music? Its just some rich girl who got to pretend to be a pop singer for one day in one video and the only reason it got huge last week was because it SUCKED.

That's all... its an internet meme. Like a million other memes that appear every week.. it's irrelevant now, it never meant anything, it was never taken seriously even as a pop song.

Gifs were made, we all had a good laugh.. that's all it is.
Title: Re: Worst Song Of All Time
Post by: Jeremy Blackman on March 23, 2011, 10:58:50 PM
I get that. And I get that people realize it's bad. The reason it's troublesome is that it wasn't created in a vacuum. The pure nakedness of what they're going for (Party/party/fun/fun/randomvacuousgarbage? Check. Suburban white girl pretending to be black? Check. You can go on...) is almost gut-wrenching. This may be an absurd version, but it's not all that different. If the lyrics were better written, if she could put on a better fake smile, if the cultural appropriation were slightly better camoflouged, it would fit in nicely with what is popular. The fact that young people (teenage girls in this case) have accepted (at least on some level) that this is approximately what a pop star is, that this is roughly what you go for, that these are the legitimate ingredients of popular music... that is what's depressing.

Title: Re: Worst Song Of All Time

This is what I'm saying, in terms of comparison. (And it's especially stark when the "vocals" and lyrics are front and center.) Take early Avril Lavigne—some of her lyrics are (understandably) a little cliche-teen-angsty, but good God, at least she was trying to say something! Why aren't the kids into that anymore?

Furthermore, get off my lawn.
Title: Re: Worst Song Of All Time
Post by: Stefen on March 24, 2011, 12:29:38 AM
Avril Lavigne better have 1% better music. She has songwriters, producers, vocal coaches, pro tools, etc. All this girl has is a 13th birthday, her dads credit card and a couple of perverts with final cut pro.
Title: Re: Worst Song Of All Time
Post by: Jeremy Blackman on March 24, 2011, 01:19:15 AM
Yeah, but even in the earliest live acoustic performances, Avril doesn't miss a note. And she did co-write her songs (probably the lyrics more than the music).

Skill is not the issue anyway, though. The point is that at least she was trying to express something that was somewhat human. And Avril was certainly not alone in that at the time. Feels like a different era.

especially when your parents can afford to make you a pop star or at least a wanna be. What i like about rebecca black is that she doesn't REALLY seem to wanna be in the video but it seems like her parents made her. Jenna Rose seems like she demanded her parents front the $1,000,000 to make her a sensation and so i despise her dumbass and her weird mouth twitch.

its like when i was a kid and i demanded my dad build me a WWF wrestling ring in the back yard. He said no, and i'm a better person because of it.

1 - 5. There were more people buying CDs or paying for single Itunes tracks in the years 2000+ than there were hippies and teens buying records in the sixties or cassettes in the 80s and 90s. also elvis and Hendrix suck.

6 & 7. So what, they obviously had wider appeal.

8. marketing.

Sorry to report, I have a pretty solid nomination.

Fun test: If you can make it through the final stretch (from about 3:17) without killing yourself, you have a strong will to live.

Actually, the pretty girl licking her necklace is probably too much of a distraction (yes, that happens). It sort of mitigates the soul-destroying effect of hearing "way way way way too looong" whimper-croaked by Adam Duritz over and over again (which has an unexpected meta meaning). The best way to hear this is from the speakers in a home improvement store while you're trying to find something and have no power to turn it off.
