Title: Spy Kids 3-D - Once Upon A Time In Mexico
Post by: MacGuffin on February 11, 2003, 11:46:44 AM
Sly Kids

Stallone will play villain in next ''Spy Kids.'' The third installment will be in 3-D

Sylvester Stallone will face off against his smallest opponents yet in his next movie, and he's likely to get his ass kicked. Still, it'll probably be a hit for the actor, whose career is badly in need of one. It's the third installment in the ''Spy Kids'' franchise, in which, Variety reports, Stallone will play a villain called the Toymaker.

In "Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over," Stallone's baddie traps young heroine Carmen (Alexa Vega) in a virtual-reality game, and the rest of her secret agent family -- brother Juni (Daryl Sabara), their parents (Antonio Banderas and Carla Gugino), and their grandfather (Ricardo Montalban) -- must come to the rescue. Director Robert Rodriguez, who shot the first two action spectacles on a budget and reaped a total of $196 million at the U.S. box office, only just started filming, but he expects to get the movie into theaters on July 25. ''I've always been a big fan of Sylvester Stallone,'' he tells Variety. ''His larger-than-life persona will be a great addition to the 'Spy Kids 3-D' universe.''

As the title indicates, the movie will be in 3-D, but it won't look cheesy, Rodriguez promises. ''The technology has advanced significantly, thanks to the advent of high-definition digital moviemaking,'' he said last week in a statement. The 3-D effects are an outgrowth of the virtual-reality plotline, he said. ''Once the characters go into the videogame, the audience puts on the glasses, and it's in 3-D,'' Rodriguez said. In the game's universe, ''anything is possible. In fact, Ricardo Montalban, at 82 years old, gets to lava surf and ride an ultra-cool motorbike.''

They are, of course, shooting that here, in Austin.

Maybe I'll catch Rocky on 6th street sometime.

That can only mean a return of MIKE JUDGE!

Who, I believe (along with Christopher Guest perhaps) is the funniest guy in film today.

It's been too long since the last big 3D movie (Jaws 3-D?).

I'm oddly curious just because it's in 3D and I'm a sucker for gimmicks.

Last one I remember in the actual theater (you know, not counting Captain Eo and all those Six Flags movies) was the tail end of Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare.  It was in 3-D, but oddly enough, it wasn't the final nightmare.  Wes Craven had a new one.

Oh yeah. Final Nightmare is one of my favorites, how could I have forgotten that? Love how the 3D glasses are in the DVD boxed set and you can watch the original 3D ending.

Not as amazing as that underwater 3d ride in Vegas. That blew away every ride of its kind I had ever been on. 3d, motion, surround sound... It was amazing.

Robert Rodriguez - Spy Kids 3 preview

So, who's back in Spy Kids 3?
Everybody who's ever been a Spy Kids movie is back. Everybody, even people from the first movie show up again.

How will the 3-D work in regular movie theaters?
It'll play in all theaters because I'm using an anaglyph system. This [Ghosts Of The Abyss] is a polarized system where you can only see it in a special theater. I'm using the same cameras but I'm outputting it so it'll be in digital theaters, it'll be in regular movie theaters, you'll have colored glasses that you get when you buy a ticket and you'll see it in red and cyan.

Was Tron an influence here?
Tron, Escape from New York, it's kind of a mix of all these time limit type movies. It's a lot of those sci-fi ideas mixed together. Very Matrix.

How is the tone different from the first two Spy Kids films?
The first movie was very like Willy Wonka, James Bond. The second one was a very Ray Harryhausen type movie. This one, I don't know. It's a different thing. It's in that family of pictures, that sort of humor, but the level of imagination is really great because since they're in a game, anything can happen. They do unbelievable things in there, and in 3-D, so that's what's really fun. I'm having the most fun on this movie than on the other two. I think it'll be the best of the three by far.

I take it lots of stuff comes out at you?
All the time. It's one thing after another. Cleverly thinking of another way to throw stuff at the audience. My kids, I show it to them as we're making it. they're reaching for the screen all the time. That's all people want is eye candy, and then it's got a really good story.

Will it still be in 3-D on video and DVD?
On DVD. On VHS it won't work because it's just such a low-res medium, it just wouldn't look good. It would just be so frustrating, so I'm going to put it out in 2-D. But on DVD, yes. We did some tests. It looks great.

Are there any sets or is it all digital?
Before they enter the video game, we have some sets, but mostly it's all digital sets. All digital props because they're in the game. They're surfing lava, walking on top of a huge rope. They do unbelievable crazy things. Very Sci-fi. They're in a game, but they're in the game. You're like, 'Wow, I wish I could go do that.' My kids flipped out on it. I'm having a great time.

Is this really the last one?
Yeah, I couldn't think of a way to top it. This is like the ultimate third movie.

What's next for you then?
I have Once Upon a Time in Mexico coming out. I have several other ideas of things I might do.

I thought that was done. Why was it delayed?
I shot it early because I had a window to shoot it, but I told them I wasn't going to be able to actually finish editing it. Then I had to learn how to score so I could score it. I did the score. 85 piece orchestra score. I had to learn orchestration. They were originally going to put it out in March but then they liked it so much they wanted to really sell it in front of their big summer movies, so the trailers are going to go up in front of Bad Boys 2, Charlie's Angels and I'll put it out at the end of the summer. I just finished the mix this weekend.

What is one big action set piece from that?
There's a bunch. There was one cool one where Antonio and Salma are handcuffed together and they have to scale down the side of a six story building by swinging each other down while people are shooting at them. That's really cool.

I work in downtown Austin and we recently got an email about street closures this Sunday.  Evidently they're closing a large chunk of downtown (on Congress st.) all day for filming.

I'm gonna show up and watch, but I'm debating whether or not I want to take my camera and look obnoxious.

Before I got married, I decided to get an expensive haircut and ended up with the same stylist/barber who cuts Robert's son, Rebel's hair.

I saw this last night. It's definitely the weakest of the three Spy Kids movies, so if you didn't like the others, stay far far away. I really liked them, so this movie was tolerable, but the 3D was awful. It's the old school red-blue glasses technology, which makes everything look ugly and monochromatic, and its headache inducing as all hell. It was projected digitally with a hidef projector, and since it was shot in HD too, the 2D scenes looked almost 3D themselves. I'd have rather just watched the whole movie that way.

It was cool to see giant robots attacking downtown Austin, though.

Awesome!

Yeah, I showed up for all the Downtown footage... took some pictures... until they asked me to leave.

I was actually supposed to go to the premier of this, but didn't go.  When did you see it?  And Where?

I was surprised to see what little downtown footage they used in the trailer looked so CGed that you could hardly tell they had ever been there.

It was cool to watch them gearing up the 3-D shit.  They had to callibrate the equipment using this cool neon cube.

I saw it at a press screening in Dallas last night.

I know Rodriguez keeps finding ways to work around the low quality CG (last time it was a Harryhausen homage, this time it's a video game), and that's fine, but the first film was so great and it didn't rely nearly as much on CG. But it's all still fun. The giant robots look fake, but they've got a really cool design, and watching them climb over the capital building was just neat.

Man, when do we get to see Once Upon A Time In Mexico? I can't wait to see him get back to his roots.

yeah i really liked the first one.  but i agree.  the second one looked so fake, and the story wasnt nearly as involving, i got so bored i just started reading a magazine while my girlfriend finished watching it.  i was excited about the third one because i was reading about the "great NEW advances in 3D technology", so i thought this one might be fun, and atleast be cool 3D.  but hearing this is really disappointing.

also, really excited about OUATIM, but i had heard some bad advance word on this one too.  like, the reason it hasnt come out yet, is because it sucks. does anyone else know why its taking so long.  he finished it before he started spy3 and thats already coming out?

I heard the same thing...the buzz from the Austin test screening last fall was sort of quiet, although there were a few very positive reviews. But we shall see. That was a really rough assembly cut, and Rodriguez had to put the whole post process on hold while he shot Spy Kids 3.

There was originally supposed to be a trailer on Charlies Angels 2. That didn't happen, so I'm guessing it'll be on one of the big Sony movies in the next couple of months. That means either Bad Boys 2, SWAT or Underworld (or maybe Gigli, but I doubt it).

So, is Rodriguez finally done with this Spy Kids shit?

I'm sorry.  I can't dig it like some of you guys seem to.  It's just utterly stupid to me, no matter how self-conscious or tongue-in-cheek it really is.  I'm not even sure I want to see anything ever again by Rodriguez.  I'll just sit here quietly and pretend he made more films like Desperado.

Markums, you should really read Rebel Without A Crew if you get the chance. I used to feel the same way about Rodriguez going from indie god to hollywood kids movie bitch until I read his book. It really explains a lot about where he comes from and how he was pulled in to the whole indie thing. I still wish he hadn't gone the Spy Kids route, but at least now I understand why he did.

good book.  pretty much every starting out filmmakers dream.  no expectations for debut film, which becomes unexpected festival hit and is acquired in major studio bidding war, only after being wooed in hollywood by every major studio with deals to distribute and make future movies/sequels.

I can appreciate the Spy Kids movies for the simple fact that they're tolerable for adults. As a dad of three, it's really hard to find something that everyone can go see that doesn't cause mom and dad to claw their eyeballs out. Pixar can usually be counted on for a good time, but other times it's a crap shoot. MIB2 was so bad that I very nearly walked out. But the Spy Kids movies have had a certain amount of charm.

If for nothing else, for the Mike Judge sightings.

And Carla Giglio. MeeeeYOW!

Latino Review was alerted that the trailer that was shown on Entertainment Tonight from Robert Rodriguez's final installment in the El Mariachi movies is now online. The trailer will be attached with Bad Boys 2. Once Upon a Time in Mexico opens nationwide on Sept 12 and stars Antonio Banderas, Salma Hayek, Johnny Depp, Willem Dafoe, Rubén Blades, Eva Mendes, and Mickey Rourke.

The saga of the mythic guitar-slinging hero, El Mariachi (Banderas), continues in Robert Rodriguez's bold, non-stop action epic "Once Upon a Time in Mexico". The new adventure is set against a backdrop of revolution and greed. Haunted and scarred by loss, El Mariachi has retreated into a life of isolation. He is forced out of hiding by Sands (Depp), a corrupt CIA agent. Sands recruits the reclusive hero to sabotage a plot by the evil cartel kingpin Barillo (Dafoe), who is planning to assassinate the president of Mexico. El Mariachi has his own reasons for returning - retribution and revenge. Now, together with his capable cohorts Lorenzo (Iglesias) and Fideo (Leonardi) the legend of El Mariachi attains new levels of excitement.

I thought it was a great trailer. It was cut a little too quickly for my taste at first, but once there's that quick push in on Banderas as he makes the sign of the cross with the pistol, and the guitar strumming starts up, I got really excited. I'll bet this was cut with the premonition that 'Pirates' would be a big hit, since Johnny Depp gets the most screen time in it.

Also, the HD photography looked real nice (I saw it on the big screen). One of these days, the technology will be commonplace enough to forget that it's being used, but for now it's always nice to see someone taking advantage of digital video.

Title: Spy Kids 3-D - Once Upon A Time In Mexico
Post by: MacGuffin on August 23, 2003, 06:23:36 PM
From Entertainment Weekly:

Did anyone really ask for another ''Desperado'' -- a film too few saw the first time? Maybe not, but early word on ''Mexico'' is that Depp, fresh off his box office swashbuckling in ''Pirates of the Caribbean,'' steals the show.

It's hard to begrudge Robert Rodriguez's desire to crank out a trilogy of family flicks for his sons to enjoy. But now that the ''Spy Kids'' franchise has run its cuddly course, we're pleased to see the director back where he belongs: blowing stuff up for the grown-ups.

Ostensibly a sequel to 1995's cult bloodbath ''Desperado'' (which was itself a sequel to 1993's equally culty ''El Mariachi''), ''Once Upon a Time in Mexico'' owes its existence to the biggest cult drooler of all, Quentin Tarantino. "When we were doing 'From Dusk Till Dawn' back in '95, Quentin suggested I do a third 'El Mariachi'/'Desperado' movie and it could be like my 'Fistful of Dollars' trilogy," says Rodriguez, referring to Sergio Leone's '60s troika of spaghetti Westerns: ''A Fistful of Dollars,'' ''For a Few Dollars More,'' and ''The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.''

Rodriguez sparked to the idea, but it wasn't until years later when he was finishing ''Spy Kids'' that he turned to Antonio Banderas -- the Eastwood to his Leone -- and asked what he thought about picking up his explosives-packed guitar case again. Recalls Banderas, "I asked Robert if he had a script and he said, 'Give me three weeks, I'll come up with one!'" Rodriguez needed only one.

The south-of-the-border saga kicks off when a psychotic CIA agent (Johnny Depp) hires Banderas' shadowy Mariachi to whack a ruthless cartel lord during Mexico's Day of the Dead. But it's not as simple as it sounds. From there, Rodriguez jackknifes into more double and triple crosses than a bag full of pretzels. And even Banderas admits, "I'm in the movie and I don't even know who's a good guy and who's a bad guy."

The Killer Moment: Depp's rogue CIA agent, after having his eyes gouged out, seeks payback in a blind pistol fight.

I saw OUATIM this evening, and it's a heck of a lot of fun. I'll get the bad stuff out of the way first: Rodriguez is not a good writer. I couldn't for the life of me tell you what the plot of the movie is, and it's not for lack of trying. It's convoluted beyond hope; it's hard to even figure out who the villain is. This means that there are passages of expository dialogue that, since they don't actually explain anything, are just boring.

But they're pretty infrequent, and the rest of the time, the movie is like the antithesis of Bad Boys 2. Lots of action, graphic violence, and a sense of grace and playfulness. Rodriguez still hasn't run out of imaginative ways to stage an action scene.

Other things worth mentioning: Johnny Depp's eyes, Johnny Depp's lunchboxes, Johnny Depp's tip at the cafe and most of the other stuff involving his character.

Also, I couldn't believe this was shot on HD. The trailer must have been from partially uncorrected footage -- there were a lot of giveaways there, but none in the movie itself. The movie looks a gazillion times more vibrant than many 35mm features (and way better than any other HD movie to date). ILM did the color correction and transfer, so I guess there's a reason for that.

EDIT: all of this is restated and added upon in my full review (http://www.road-dog-productions.com/onceuponatimeinmexico.html).
