Title: Matt Is Doing A U.S. Road Trip And Wants To Meet YOU!
Post by: matt35mm on June 12, 2009, 09:20:12 PM
Dear XIXAXers,

I'm living in England until late October of this year.  I have to make my way back to California, but am in no rush, and have the time and freedom and funds to have a little adventure.  Therefore, I am going to fly to the East Coast (most likely Boston), and do a cross-country road-trip back to California.  I plan to spend 2-3 months doing this, and I want to meet up with y'all along the way.  I have a rough draft of what I'd like to do drawn out here:

(https://xixax.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi15.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fa385%2Fmatt35mm%2FUS-travelplan-draft1.jpg&hash=0bbd4d3bd5e9e71e16c0b40555913fa4b49d3526)

This'll be a good ol' living-out-of-a-backpack, bussing around, hitchhiking, couch-surfing type thing for the most part.  If you're anywhere around this route and are interested in meeting up with me, please let me know.  If I can stay with you (or if you know of some place I can stay), DEFINITELY let me know!  I have also posted this on my Facebook with some pretty positive responses, so I'll be getting to see some old friends and new friends, which is what I'm most excited about.  I don't really like staying in a place for just one day, so I'd especially like to meet up with people who can hang out with me for maybe 2 or 3 days, whether for the whole day or after work or whatever, but please let me know even if you can only meet me briefly, because we might be able to work it out.

So please let me know if you'd like to meet up with me.  Thanks, all!

Hell yeah bro. I'll meet up with you when you're in NM assuming we can make our schedules work. You don't seem to be coming around Albuquerque or Santa Fe but I can travel up North to have lunch/dinner with you if we can work it out.

Yes, avoid Mississippi and Alabama at all costs.  Heh.

I'm in NC, and it'd be interesting, a maybe.

This is something that I've wanted to do myself for a very long time, but I haven't the funds to pursue it. What a wonderful idea.
I'd love to meet up again, and if you can swing down to Columbus, GA (it's 90 mins south-west-ish of Atl), then you'll also have an incredibly comfy couch to crash on (speaking from plenty of experience).
Just let me know!

I'd give you the couch in my apartment to crash on for a few days, but you'd have to continue on through Ohio, all the way up Michigan to a little city right below Lake Superior, to get to me. Probably not in your itinerary of things to do, but awesome trip idea.

Yeah, the map above is a rough draft and is more about which states I'd like to hit rather than which parts of each state (for example, I will want to go to New Orleans even though I only drew the route to the middle of Louisiana).  I definitely want to go to Albuquerque, having read up a bit on the arts scene there, and I'd also like to visit Santa Fe.  We should definitely find a way to make it work.

I'd like to meet up for sure.  I would like to visit nearly all the states but I can't gauge what would be too ambitious for a 2-3 month trip, so at this point I'm assuming that I would have to skip some states, but you're probably right that I could include those states fairly easily.  I know you were sorta joking but now I probably will go to those states.

I might do.  Michigan isn't on this rough draft only because I've been to Michigan before, but really I've only been to the Kalamazoo area and the Lake Michigan bit, so I'm sure there's a lot more to it than what I've seen.  So it's a maybe, and as I work out the details enough to see whether or not there will be time to spend a few days in Michigan, I will let you know.  If I do get to Michigan, then I'll make the effort to come and meet up with you.

Thanks everyone for the positive responses.  Can't wait to meet you all!

Jefferson, I might well be going through Indianapolis and would be happy to meet up.  Bloomington also seems worth visiting.

Polka, I'll be going to Seattle and already have a place to stay with a friend lined up, so you won't have to house me.  Definitely want to meet up and hang out.

Pete, I'm fully prepared to be violated in some way while meeting Stefen.  I'll want to meet up again with you, too, when I get to San Francisco.

Yea, I was just putting it out there. I don't expect anything. My part of Michigan is a lot different than Kalamazoo, but my part is also 8 hours north of Kalamazoo so it's a big hike. I live in the northern region of the Upper Peninsula and it's as rural as you can get in this country. No major highways and no significant cities. Just a lot of wilderness and a population so small that the entire Upper Peninsula only has one congressmen. Thrindle compared the UP to the northern regions of Canada where civilization just dies off. The reason I am still around is because in the middle of this wasteland, there is a decent university with some excellent scholars acting as professors. When I'm done with that then I'm hopefully gone for good.

To give you more deterrance from coming up, it gets very cold up here very fast. People say Detroit has shitty weather, but that's a resort town compared to our normal climate. It's a crazy place to live, but the cool thing is that I live right on Lake Superior. It's the largest lake in the world as far as surface area goes. The look and feel of it is close to a major sea. There are other cultural knick knacks I take pride in with living here, but those things are meant to be experienced instead of spoken about.

Great idea!

Yeesh, GT.  I think you've successfully deterred me from going there.  I'm not even sure it's possible on the bus, which is the transportation that I'm taking, if it's as out of the way as you make it sound.  And if it is possible, then it will still probably take something like 20 hours on a Greyhound from Detroit.  Thanks very much for the offer, though.

RK, I will definitely be coming to Austin.  I've been there once before for a few days and I loved it.  It's one of the places that I'm seriously considering moving to next year.  Let's definitely meet up!

But Toronto is so faaaarrrr.  Oh I'll think about it.

... in which case maybe it would make more sense to fly from London to Toronto, then just start heading southward.

I'll think about it.

Thanks, Neil.  I'll probably be taking you up on that.  I'm assuming that "stl" means St. Louis?

Here's the new and improved plan.  I've been crunching the numbers and seeing what I can afford/have time to do.  I've had to streamline the trip to make it more, I dunno, efficient.  Some things that were too far out of the way (such as Miami and New Orleans) had to be done away with.  I still hope to go to those places, but this trip is just not the time.

I had to limit it to about 30 places, over about 75 days (avg. 2.5 days per place, but some places I'll want to stay more than that and some places less than that).  This is still packing quite a bit into the trip, so I'll be pretty damned busy.  Here's a list of the places that I'm planning to visit.

(https://xixax.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi15.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fa385%2Fmatt35mm%2Ftravel-plan-draft2.jpg&hash=19cc11a821d5c458b0b4391f7e5ee1e0b026fdf3)

boston, MA (couchsurfing or maybe staying with a friend of a friend)
somewhere in CT (staying with a friend)
new york city + nearby jersey (staying with several friends)
philadelphia, PA (couchsurfing)
richmond, VA (couchsurfing)
raleigh, NC (couchsurfing)
asheville, NC (couchsurfing)
athens, GA (couchsurfing)
atlanta, GA (couchsurfing)
columbus, GA (staying with perenium falcon)
nashville, TN (couchsurfing)
bowling green, KY (staying with i love a magician)
indianapolis, IL (hanging with jefferson, couchsurfing if i can't stay over)
chicago, IL (hanging with walrus, couchsurfing if i can't stay over)
bloomington, IN (couchsurfing)
st. louis, MO (staying with neil)
springfield, MO (have family here, trying to time to be here around Thanksgiving)
denton, TX (staying with a friend)
fort worth/dallas, TX (hanging with Ravi and another friend, might have to couchsurf)
austin, TX (hanging with RK, couchsurfing)
san antonio, TX (staying with a friend)
santa fe, NM (couchsurfing)
albuquerque, NM (hanging with stefan, couchsurfing if he can't house me)
seattle, WA (hanging with polkablues, staying over at a friends')
olympia, WA (staying with a friend)
portland, OR (staying with a few friends)
eugene, OR (couchsurfing)
san francisco/oakland, CA (pete! xerxes maybe? staying with friends or family)
santa barbara, CA (staying with friends)
los angeles, CA (foursome with Mac, kal, and silas, possibly ghostboy and others)

Traveling via Greyhounds, Megabuses, Amtrak sometimes, and flying from Albuquerque to Seattle.  Transport budget is $1500, which is an average of $50 per journey (that should be about right, as the bus fares average around $25, and the trains and plane will obviously be more.  Food budget: $750 (average of $10 a day, which should be a piece of cake considering that I currently eat for about $3 a day).  Another $500 budgeted for "thanks for letting me stay/hang out with you, i love you" meals or drinks or whatever.  Another $750 for entertainment/hopefully very rare nights of having to get a motel room/misc.  Total budget: $3500.  Am I forgetting anything?  I should have around an additional $1000 that I don't plan on spending but can serve as some sort of emergency fund.  Hoping to not have to pay for lodging by staying with friends/family/couchsurfing.  I'm more likely to rough it than pay for a room.

I THINK that I've budgeted to make this comfortably affordable for me, such that there is plenty of room for error built into the budget.

I will try to set off in early October and make it home by Christmas or New Years.  Much of this is still up for change, so suggestions are welcome!

That sounds like a lot of fun. When you find out, let me know when you'll be in NM. I live in a studio so my place is pretty small, but I can most likely arrange for you to crash at a friends place (they're all cool). We can hang in Abq or Santa Fe. They're about 45 mins apart. I live in Abq, but I grew up in Santa Fe so I know my way around. If you can, try and make it for a weekend since I work long hours Monday-Friday.

Duuuude.  This is what you call a documentary, especially if you veer off the Xixaxian path and go to all the dives and ratholes you can.

You can possibly come to Charlotte if you want, too.  Big city, lots to see here, I'm sure.  Make it Raleigh -> Charlotte -> Asheville, and it's pretty much the same distance, I think.  Depending on what I'm up to that weekend, a ride MAY be possible (a big ass MAYBE may).  And that would save you a bit of bus fare.

Be aware that direct flights between Albuquerque and Seattle are few and far between. I think Southwest Airlines has a non-stop flight now, but they're the only ones. Otherwise they stick you with a layover in Phoenix or Salt Lake, and it becomes a huge hassle.

I've done some research into this, and there seem to be fairly frequent flights for about $150 (which is pretty affordable for me), with a short stop in Salt Lake City, UT.  Something like an hour wait.  That's not too much of a hassle, but thanks for looking out for me.

Thanks everyone!

haha, actually i get along with everyone here pretty well. for the most part i hate people and keep to myself but being a street artist kind of forces me into being social and now people know me and i usually have no idea who they are. i live in the ghetto, too, so not too many rednecks but they are quite prevalent.
Title: Re: Matt Is Doing A U.S. Road Trip And Wants To Meet YOU!
Post by: Stefen on June 22, 2009, 03:38:00 PM
Yeah, that's basically what I was thinking. The rednecks. I have this preconceived notion of the deep South that is probably highly inaccurate. Like if they see you painting a street mural they call the cops on you and have you baptized in case there are any demons inside you forcing you to have homosexual and deviant thoughts.
Title: Re: Matt Is Doing A U.S. Road Trip And Wants To Meet YOU!
Post by: 03 on June 22, 2009, 10:24:40 PM
the only inaccurate assumption about the south is that everyone is like that.
the majority, yes. the stereotypes are very very true.
and speaking of cops in alabama
living in the ghetto last year, my black friend ej and i got into my car to go to the gas station, upon igniting the engine, my car was filled with flashlights and banging on the window. my friend, in the passenger seat rolls down his window, 'hey! what's going on? is everything ok?'

cop, screaming: get out of the car nigger get the fuck out now
friend: sir (raising his hands, me too) what is going on what is wrong
cop: get the fuck out now
friend: sir, you have no probable cause to get me out of this car, what is going on
cop: probable cause (baffled) ill show you fucking probable cause come here nigger boy
proceeds to rip him out of my passenger window, slams him against the car and starts grabbing his balls and screaming whilst the cop on my side asks for my id calmly
given to him, i ask 'i'm sorry but can you tell me whats going on please'
coponmyside: there was a break in tonight and your friend here fits the description
me: well, he's been with me all night in his apartment (gestures adjacent) what is the description?
coponmyside: black male with short hair
me: ......

they let him go

they also told my 11 year old brother that he would go to jail for the rest of his life if he ever skateboarded in this goddamn town again.
i could go on all night

Well I was gonna say that I would be happy to come visit you, 03, but now I see that Mobile is quite a bit out of the way of my path.  However, I would still be really interested in visiting someday.  Louisiana and Florida were two places that I wanted to visit but couldn't fit in this time, so I'm hoping that someday I can do those states, at which point it might work out for me to come to Mobile.

Those murals are excellent, by the way.

I'm also doing a UK/Europe tour + Iceland before doing this ridiculous road trip.

Just for kicks, I thought it would be fun to finally write out all the planned destinations between 2 days from now until mid-December (about 140 days).  Some of it will probably change and I may have to cut some cities if I need to slow down, but it's pretty close.

bristol, ENGLAND
birmingham, ENGLAND
manchester, ENGLAND
liverpool, ENGLAND
leeds, ENGLAND
newcastle, ENGLAND

edinburgh, SCOTLAND
glasgow, SCOTLAND

alvdal, NORWAY
oslo NORWAY

stockholm, SWEDEN

berlin, GERMANY

milan, ITALY
venice, ITALY
rome, ITALY
bologna, ITALY

brighton, ENGLAND (rest for a couple of weeks)

reykjavik, ICELAND

USA - arriving around September 20th
boston, MA
somewhere in CT
new york city + nearby jersey
philadelphia, PA
richmond, VA
raleigh, NC
asheville, NC
athens, GA
atlanta, GA
columbus, GA
nashville, TN
bowling green, KY
indianapolis, IL
chicago, IL
bloomington, IN
st. louis, MO
springfield, MO
denton, TX
fort worth/dallas, TX
austin, TX
san antonio, TX
santa fe, NM
albuquerque, NM
seattle, WA
olympia, WA
portland, OR
eugene, OR
san francisco/oakland, CA
santa barbara, CA
los angeles, CA

Then if there's any money left, Lake Tahoe, CA/NV

I am prepared for the possibility that I may lose my mind.  All I can do is laugh.  It is also totally possible that I will give up and go home at any point, either due to lack of funds or exhaustion, but I will try to stick to this.

i recommend New Haven connecticut if you haven't nailed down a location... the city sucks except for the frequent free screenings at yale and a couple god bars. the yale campus is worth seeing for the architecture, too.

it's also 3 hours via commuter train directly to NYC. i know for a fact that it's cheaper than amtrak and it's about as fast as driving if you consider traffic.

edit: that's "good" bars.

I got lucky because the U.K. exchange rate was really bad for the American dollar when I first came here, which means I had to save up extra money before I left the U.S. to prepare for that.  Then once I got here the exchange rate went pretty quickly into my favor.  The difference was that basically, within about 6 months, it went from the almost the worst ever rate to the best ever rate in terms of dollar worth over here.  Plus I live real cheap.  So I have extra money now.

A lot of it is student loan money though.  But that's the easiest kind of loan to pay back, and it's not a crippling amount of debt.  And I'm not using credit cards or anything so there won't be additional debt; just a relatively small debt that I would have had as a student anyway.

And I don't feel like a jerk for having the extra money because I had to take some time off school and work extra to save up for what I thought would be a much higher cost of living, which it turned out not to be.

UPDATE!

Right now I'm in Ozark, MO, staying with my sister and seeing all my nieces and nephews that I haven't seen for a long time.  It's wonderful!

So far, I've hit every place that I planned to hit and it's been great.  I've met up with Reinhold, Bonanzataz, Gamblour, Perenium Falcon, I Love a Magician, Walrus, and Neil, with whom I went to St. Louis to see Ghostboy and his wonderful film St. Nick.  Neil and I got to see him win the Best New Filmmaker award there!

I'll be coming down to Austin during Thanksgivingtime.  From the 25th to the 30th.  I want to meet up with Sleepless and RK!!

I should be in Albuquerque from the 3rd to the 7th of December or so, and I want to meet up with Stefen!!

I've had to cut the trip short due to lack of time and money, so I'm cutting out the going to Seattle and coming down the coast thing.  I'm just gonna go from Albuquerque through Arizona back to California.  I'm sure I will see Seattle and Portland and all that someday.

That's pretty much all I have time to update right now.  Meeting everybody has been great!  Y'all are awesome.  America's neato.

Yeah, I figured that something like that might be the case.  Thanksgiving is just an awkward time to travel.  I meant to be at my sister's for Thanksgiving, but I actually thought Thanksgiving was on the 3rd week of November... so I just ended up at my sister's a whole week early and need to get on with my travels...

Oh well.  I am strongly thinking of moving to Austin in the summer, though, so I will keep you updated on that.  If I do, then it won't be a tragedy if we don't get to hang out on the 29th.

Yeah, Walrus, I definitely had fun hanging out with you.  I also enjoyed your comic, which I forgot to say.

Well, this lovely-ass road trip has come to an end.  I went to all the places that I wanted to go to up to Austin, TX.  When I was about to board a bus to Albuquerque, I was informed that, due to snowstorms, buses have been re-routed and that it was going to take 1-3 days (they couldn't say for sure) to get there.  I decided: no.  So I am I going to fly back to California from Austin tomorrow.  I will be moving to Austin this Spring or Summer, and plan to visit the places that I missed out on while I drive from California to Austin.  Before then I may also do the whole Pacific Northwest, which I've always wanted to do.

So the XIXAX-meeting final tally for this trip... I met up with:

Bonanzataz
Reinhold
Gamblour
The Perenium Falcon (for the second time)
I Love A Magician
Walrus
Neil
Ghostboy (we've met a few times before; Neil and I went to go see his film St. Nick at a film festival)

I also hung out with Children With Angels, and stayed with him just before I left London.

This time I failed to meet up with Stefen, RK, Sleepless, and Ravi, but I will be meeting up with all of them within the next year, I'm sure.

I'm gonna be spending most of my time in Orange County, but will be spending several days in L.A., as well.  I still want to meet up with Mac, Kal, and Silias, as planned.

Anyway, it's been a great trip, and great meeting all a y'all.  I wish I could say something incredibly poetic about my journey, but right now all I can think of is: America is cool, and America is big.  I'm very happy that I did this and it will forever be a part of me.  It's been an amazing 75 days!

Hey Man, sorry that we never ended up meeting while you were here (I didn't realize you were going to be here until today... otherwise, I would have tried to get in touch), but the weekend of Thanksgiving, we had to put our poor doggy to sleep and I was a total emotional wreck, not fit to be around human beings who weren't as devastated as I was.

Glad to hear you're moving here though... I'm sure we'll get to hang out when you do.

Oh man, I'm really really really sorry to hear about the dog.  I know that that can be incredibly tough.

I didn't know that I'd be in Austin for this long, either.  I was planning to leave a week ago, but one by one things didn't go to plan and I just kept staying.

So we'll definitely hang out when I move here, which should be in the Spring.

Silias, Kal, and Mac: I will PM you my number in a little bit and we'll go from there.

We never got to hang out in Dallas.  Just ridiculously busy at work that week.  But I've been meaning to visit Austin again sometime, so I'll have to come down there in the spring.
