maybe you could try grabbing something that will reset the number of times you've switched your region. if not, i'm sure a hack is on its way.

attention to anybody who might be on the fence about buying/otherwise obtaining aperture: get it immediately, if for no other purpose than making caps for xixax. the exposure controls alone are worth it. i'm getting an average of 2-3 more stops out of photos that i thought were too dark to bother with, and it just helps you get so much more out of the other color/contrast controls.

and it's by apple so it's fairly intuitive immediately, but i can't wait to get further acquainted with this program. 10 skulls.

Obviously what you are doing right now is called (in my upcoming book of psychology at least) validation. I think it's a normal thing to do. People will reply, say anything, and then you're gonna do what you were subconsciently thinking of doing all along.

Teen trades hacked iPhone for new car

The teenage hacker who managed to unlock the iPhone so that it can be used with cellular networks other than AT&T will be trading his reworked gadget for a new car.

George Hotz, of Glen Rock, N.J., said he had reached the deal with CertiCell, a Louisville, Ky.-based mobile phone repair company.

Hotz posted on his blog that he traded his modified iPhone for "a sweet Nissan 350Z and 3 8GB iPhones."

"This has been a great end to a great summer," Hotz wrote.

The 17-year-old Hotz said he will be sending the three new iPhones to the three online collaborators who helped him divorce Apple Inc's popular product from AT&T's network. The job took 500 hours, or about 8 hours a day since the iPhone's June 29 launch.

Hotz made the deal with Terry Daidone, co-founder of CertiCell, who also promised the teen a paid consulting job.

"We do not have any plans on the table right now to commercialize Mr. Hotz' discovery," Daidone said in a statement.

AT&T Unleashes Lawyers on iPhone Hackers

After a rash of reports over the weekend of hackers who managed to unlock the iPhone—ranging from the iPhoneSIMFree.com team to a 17-year-old kid in New Jersey—AT&T has unsurprisingly decided to rain on the parade, with a little help from its legal team.

Gizmodo is reporting that AT&T has fired off a warning to a group that was planning to sell its iPhone unlocking software. In a press release, a spokesman for iphoneunlocking.com said that AT&T contacted the site early Saturday, warning that the group would run afoul of copyright laws if it went ahead with its planned sale of the software package. The site has decided to hold off releasing the iPhone-unlocking app for now, the spokesman said.

So, all this begs the question: is it legal to unlock the iPhone? Engadget asked a copyright lawyer that very question, and got a rather nuanced answer. According to the attorney, iPhone unlockers are most likely protected by an exception in the DMCA (a law that prohibits the cracking of DRM schemes) that lets you unlock your own phone for the "sole purpose" of using it "lawfully" on a cellular network. However, you can't unlock a phone (including the iPhone) and then sell it; also, Apple and AT&T are free to sue you on the basis of other laws besides the DMCA (and they certainly have the resources—and the incentive—to do so). Bottom line? The lawyer seems to believe that you're probably in the clear as long as you're just unlocking your own iPhone and not selling it on Craigslist; then again, there's no telling what Apple and AT&T have up their legal sleeves. Also, on a practical note, keep in mind that unlocking the phone will probably violate your warranty, so if anything goes wrong, don't look for sympathy from the Apple Genius Bar.

Are the touch screens coming in larger models or just the 8 and 16gb models?

I have an 80 gig black ipod and I will run out space soon so I'm really thinking about selling my ipod and getting one of those 160gb models, but if it's coming in touch screen, I might just wait for that.

Those touch screen iPods are AMAZING.

Bethie just went and bought one last week and they release new ones a week later. haha sucker!

Apple launches new wireless iPods

SAN FRANCISCO -- Apple Inc. CEO Steve Jobs on Wednesday unveiled a new version of the company's popular iPod media player that's based on the iPhone, featuring wireless Internet access and a Web browser but not cell phone capability.

Dubbed iPod Touch, the 8-millimeter-thick device and can store photos, music, videos and other digital data. It features the same 3.5-inch, touch-screen display as the iPhone, on which light finger touches allow the user to scroll through menus and use two fingers to resize pictures.

The iPod Touch also has built-in wireless Internet access and the Safari Web browser, including Google and Yahoo search engines and easy access to YouTube videos. The iPhone, which runs on the AT&T cellular network, also includes Wi-Fi.

An 8-gigabyte version will cost $299. A 16-gigabyte version will cost $399. It will be shipped worldwide starting later this month.

"It's one of the seven wonders of the world, it's just incredible," Jobs told employees and journalists gathered at a special media event near downtown San Francisco.

Jobs also unveiled other new iPod models, including an iPod Nano with a 2.5-inch video monitor for watching movies and playing built-in games. The current version has a 2-inch screen but does not play videos.

"It's incredibly tiny. It's incredibly thin," Jobs said of the new Nano, which features a 320-by-240-pixel screen with 24 hours of audio playback. "We think it's really, really beautiful."

The new Nano, which will be in stores starting this weekend, will come in a 4-gigabyte version for $149, and an 8-gigabyte version for $199.

Apple also announced it will be selling ring tones for the iPhone for 99 cents, plus the 99-cent cost of the song. Ring tones from more than 500,000 songs available on iTunes will go on sale next week

I'm really pissed off (as most people) with them lowering the iPhone price $200 already. I mean, its great... but what happened with all the hardcore fans (like myself) that paid $600 less than two months ago? It's not fair. They are getting in big trouble because they are pissing off these hardcore fans that buy the products when they launch. If this becomes a trend where they will reduce the price significantly in little time, people wont buy their products like crazy when they come out.

I saw some bloggers talking about the possibility of rebates and Apple offering these first iPhone buyers iTunes giftcards and other stuff. That could work. If not, its a really bad move by them because it justifies how overpriced the phone was in the first place. Its normal for prices to come down, but after a reasonable amount of time. 2 months its nothing.

Stefen

That's how you seperate the suckers from the non-suckers.

The first VCR cost like $10,000 and weighed more than all of Xixax combined (TONS)

agreed. it's f'ed up, and i'm infuriated. i have a 4GB which is basically worthless now. i guess i won't have to give anymore on-the-street-and-subway iphone tutorials, as now every bag of douche and his brother will have one.

you know they could've at least tried to appease the iphoners by providing some much needed software updates (like, uhh, the ability to copy/paste for one) but no, they drop the price 200 bucks and come out with 25 new ipods we really don't need.

Kal

I know dude... but that was like 40 years ago.

Its like the PS3... they waited like 10 months to lower the price just out of respect for the people going crazy for it at the beginning.

Stefen

I like it when the upperclass gets outsmarted and outdone. It makes me feel like things might actually work out.

I'd rather have tax breaks tho.

last days of gerry the elephant

Why are you people surprised? This is nothing new from Apple. Wait until after Christmas, and you'll see bigger capacity ipods out there or perhaps a price decrease. Sleazy, but I'll still buy an ipod touch once they get to 30-80 gigs.

To all iPhone customers:

I have received hundreds of emails from iPhone customers who are upset about Apple dropping the price of iPhone by $200 two months after it went on sale. After reading every one of these emails, I have some observations and conclusions.

First, I am sure that we are making the correct decision to lower the price of the 8GB iPhone from $599 to $399, and that now is the right time to do it. iPhone is a breakthrough product, and we have the chance to 'go for it' this holiday season. iPhone is so far ahead of the competition, and now it will be affordable by even more customers. It benefits both Apple and every iPhone user to get as many new customers as possible in the iPhone 'tent'. We strongly believe the $399 price will help us do just that this holiday season.

Second, being in technology for 30+ years I can attest to the fact that the technology road is bumpy. There is always change and improvement, and there is always someone who bought a product before a particular cutoff date and misses the new price or the new operating system or the new whatever. This is life in the technology lane. If you always wait for the next price cut or to buy the new improved model, you'll never buy any technology product because there is always something better and less expensive on the horizon. The good news is that if you buy products from companies that support them well, like Apple tries to do, you will receive years of useful and satisfying service from them even as newer models are introduced.

Third, even though we are making the right decision to lower the price of iPhone, and even though the technology road is bumpy, we need to do a better job taking care of our early iPhone customers as we aggressively go after new ones with a lower price. Our early customers trusted us, and we must live up to that trust with our actions in moments like these.

Therefore, we have decided to offer every iPhone customer who purchased an iPhone from either Apple or AT&T, and who is not receiving a rebate or any other consideration, a $100 store credit towards the purchase of any product at an Apple Retail Store or the Apple Online Store. Details are still being worked out and will be posted on Apple's website next week. Stay tuned.

We want to do the right thing for our valued iPhone customers. We apologize for disappointing some of you, and we are doing our best to live up to your high expectations of Apple.

Apple CEO

i swear apple is so manipulative i feel like i'm in a relationship w/ them. and this is like makeup sex.

Kal

I'm very happy to at least see some kind of response from him and Apple.

Stefen

I'm gonna go buy one of the old ones for $600, get the $100 rebate, take the phone back, buy one of the new $300 iPhones and if my fuzzy math is correct come out $700 ahead.

Fuck yeah.
