Title: GS Project Thread: Summer Project Ideas
Post by: Gold Trumpet on February 12, 2005, 11:28:18 AM
continued on last page....

I've sent out PM's to certain people advertising this, but I think I'm going to just bring it out in the open and allow everyone the chance to be apart of it. I've got an idea for Green Screen that will include a series of articles on the best films of last year. What it will be is that each member who writes for this will write about what they thought was the best film of last year. Choices for best film of the year have been as diverse as everso Il this can really work. The inspiration for this idea came from a political magazine that last year during the democratic nomination election, got together writers who picked a candidate and then each wrote an article called "In Defense Of..." for their choice candidate. This will be the same thing but for films.

I've already got a few people to agree wholeheartedly to do it. I don't mind if two articles appear for one film, but I'm really trying to be as diverse as possible with this. Here are the people who agreed to do certain films:

JB - Dogville
Shaftr - Collateral
Ono- Million Dollar Baby (maybe)
Ghostboy - Before Sunset (maybe)
Me - The Incredibles

There are a lot of other films worthy of their own article of defense so if anyone's really interested to do a piece, sign up on this thread and I'll continue to update the list. Just let me know if you want to be checked out of that list also. I'm also hoping a few people reply to this as well. I'm really tired of shooting out PM's.

Our temporary deadline to get these done by is 3 weeks.

I know I haven't been as frequent on the board in the last six months, but if you all would allow me to I would love to tackle either "Dogville" or "The Dreamers."  I consider both my favorites of the year, with "Dogville" ahead by a hair, but since JB's tackling that one already I would be happy to talk about "The Dreamers."

An updated list of the guranteed:

JB - Dogville
Shaftr - Collateral
Ghostboy - Before Sunset
Myself - The Incredibles
Film Student - The Dreamers
Myxomatosis - Sideways

I still haven't heard whether Ono wants to committ or not. Other films still are open but the due date for the articles is coming up in the next few weeks.

I think these and "The Incredibles" were the only new films I saw in 2004.  I'm so ashamed.

Can't wait to see what y'all come up with for these articles.

I went to see Catwoman because I knew it was going to be a piece of shit.  I get a perverse thrill out of really horrendous movies.

You can count me in for Million Dollar Baby.  I've written one review, almost 600 words, for a campus publication.  I'd like to do something deeper, a more critical essay (even though Eastwood himself has said he doesn't really think too much about his own films) but like I said, I'd have to see the film again.  How long are we aiming for?  I could write pages.

i only hav one simple request (to all reviewers):

-be creative, if u hav nothing insightful to say about the movie u hav chosen, abandon the project. no one wants to hear how good the "directing" was. it's the most meaningless fucking thing anyone could ever say about a movie.
Title: GS Project Thread: Summer Project Ideas
Post by: Gold Trumpet on February 22, 2005, 04:37:24 PM
As it stands, this is what I got so far:

JB - Dogville
Shaftr - Collateral
Ghostboy - Before Sunset
Myself - The Incredibles
Film Student - The Dreamers
Myxomatosis - Sideways
samsong - The Life Aquatic
ono - Million Dollar Baby
themodernage - Shaun of the Dead

and finally, a staggering [un]endorsement of Garden State by Stefen.

If anyone has any problems with being listed next to a certain film, being just listed or not being listed, let me know. Changes can always be made and even though we are trying to get as much diversity as possible, if you are hell bent to review a film already listed, you can do that too.

REMEMBER: DEADLINE FOR SUMBISSION IS MARCH 11TH.

(we're trying to get all these articles to appear at the same time)

And considering this is a themed series of articles titled "In Defense Of...", general recommended title will go as this example:

TITLE  -
The Manufactured Dream
In Defense Of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Apologies

I was supposed to write a column on Collateral and didn't do so.  Right now I'm on spring break in Tucson, AZ (for some MLB spring training).  Anyways, with a 50 page thesis due date looming in front of me, I don't think I'd be able to write one.  I feel bad b/c it is something I'd like to do.

PS> Go Wisconsin and UW-Milwaukee in Sweet 16.

SUMMER PROJECT IDEAS

OK, we are going to try to pull off a Summer Project similiar to the recent 'In Defense' project. That project to me felt like a test run. We announced it sort of abruptly without consensus from the board on what to do and tried to see how many people we could actually get. The results weren't as great as we hoped, but we managed and stuck with it and we will finish it by posting more articles.

Thing is, nothing is decided on what to do for the next project. It will be a summer project that will give everyone the opportunity of using summer months to write so school isn't a major problem. I think for the majority of us it is a major problem and school will be only more hectic through May.

The initial idea right now is a.... Pulp Fiction Retrospective

The focus won't just be reviews of the film. Thats too easy and too filled with repititive information. What we want to do is bring together an array of different articles on completely things related to the film. It can be on what influenced the film. What films the film influenced. Personal theory into what is in the black box. Personal theory about the importance of the film. Biography on Tarantino. Comparison piece of the film to something else. Whatever. What we want is to get as much creative thinking as possible for these articles.

Now, this is just an idea. Responce from the general public will guide this project along. We welcome all ideas!

Are these articles only on films from last year, or does the Green Screen encompass our favorite films in general?
