i'm starting to think casino is just as good, if not better than goodfellas. i don't know. there just seemed to be so much more shit going on in casino, the cinematography was way more innovative...
i don't know. why is casino considered to be one of scorsese's mediocre flicks while goodellas is an all-time classic?
fucking tags.
Hm.
More innovative cinematography? I dunno, you might get some dissension for that when you consider that long one-take from the outside to the inside of the club in Goodfellas. Personally, I like Casino more, because I think the characters are more interesting and dynamic. But it's really preference. I'm aware of the influences Goodfellas had, and can understand both sides. But there's something about the way Scorsese handled the epic story of Casino so well that I really dig. I mean he threw his best punches when he made both films, running on all cylinders. I think they were used to fuller effect for Casino.
i think goodfellas is terrific while i really dont like casino as much. it's ok...but not the powerhouse that is goodfellas
I think that 'Casino' was the superior film. I love them both, but 'Goodfellas' really went to hell in its final act. 'Casino' remained consistant throughout. The more it went on, the more compelling it got. I found 'Casino' way more powerful, more involving. DeNiro was really under-rated in this, his roles in both films were very different. Pesci was a firecracker, using the same nasty persona, both characters have a violent temper (the difference being that one pulls the gun straight out while the other beats you lifeless).
When thinking of both films plus's and flaws, it's pretty much the flip of a coin. But 'Casino' wins out for me.
Personally, Goodfellas is my pick. Casino was great, and the characters (as with pretty much every Marty flick) were interesting enough to watch, but Goodfellas was just more compelling to me. The way the story flowed better, and in some parts Casino seemed to drag on when it didn't have to, clinched Goodfellas for me. Some of my favorite camera work is in Goodfellas (I'm sure you all know what I'm talking about--the dolly from outside the club to the foot of the stage....)
Fucking great. :)
While I would never defend it publicly against the giant that is Goodfellas, I like Casino better. Always have. But, I'll tell you again when the Goodfellas Special Edition DVD comes out, and I finally get to see it in quality.
Though, to be honest, I think that the lighting is better in Goodfellas, because I love Ballhaus, and find Richardson a little gimmicky (the fucking blown out top light in every second fucking shot).
But the Casino soundtrack is a tiny bit cooler.
And as good as Bracco (sp?) is, Stone is a force in Casino. Also, the inclusion of James Woods makes the latter film even sweeter.
I think Casino has the superior cinematography... it was beautifully shot, the colors are vibrant, and the mood is more pleasing. I always thinkof Goodfellas as having a grittier look to it... a lot less refined. I love them both, but being a visual guy, I have to nod towards Casino.

I always thoughs I was alone on this one! I've always prefered Casino, too. Damn, this thread makes me want to pop it in again right now. It's very similar to Goodfellas, sure, but it ups the ante in almost every department. I can live without the bravura steadicam shot when everything else is so amazing.
goodfellas
i'm a CASINO fan!
goodfellas.
This thread reminds me of the countless "Mac vs. PC" threads i've read over the years!

All we need is for the insults to start flying (but lets not!), which usually starts happening after post #5 on every one of these threads i've read!

sharon stone is hotter than lorraine bracco.
so Casino. tho not by far. other than her u hav the same cast and the same story. and u can replace Liotta with DON FREAKING RICKLES! what more do u want.
i would think of this the same way i currently rate The Shining as my fave, although 2001 is clearly the best. historically.
Neither.
I've always been more fond of Casino for some reason. It just sat better with me. Goodfellas is good but something about it I can't put my finger on seems flawed. Don't know what exactly but there's just something thats keeping it from being an absolute favorite of mine whereas I had no problem whatsoever with Casino.
My favorite movie of all time is Good Fellas, it has a special place in my heart...
But I've seen both films a bunch of times and Casino is definetely better and underrated. Scorsese is much more secure in Casino, more confident...he really makes Casino a visual trip...
A few years ago, right before Boogie Nights, I started watching Casino very often, sometimes with the sound off, and I even watched it once only with the sound on, and without actually "seeing" it...let's say I listened to it and it is an amazingly well crafted movie. The colors are so vibrant, the way the music is used...I think visually, Casino is the biggest influence on boogie Nights...
De Niro is superb in Casino, so is everyone else...and I think Casino is slowly taking it's place, as I'm sure other "flawed" films by marty will with time...
Amen.
LIke I have mentioned earlier in another thread Casino is better in every possible way your measure a filmby IMO...From reading the posts by PRO-Casino fans I can say I agree w/ the reasons you guys like it more than Goodfellas.so I don;t need to stae reasons why b/c some have done a good job for me already.....

Casino and Goodfellas do have their similiarities. Both are great films, I love em both.
But If I have a choice between the two. I'll take Casino everytime.
It's more complex in many ways, and I enjoy the story much better.

i appreciate the craft of Casino more than Goodfellas. I also like how Casino was so incredibly informative...i felt like i was watching a Casino documentary with style.
that slow motion take of Sharon Stone with 'Love is Strange' pinging in the background is one of my favorite shots ever. A woman has never looked more attractive on screen.
However I voted Goodfellas, because of all the characters, i care about Henry Hill the most.
they both went on for a little bit longer than they should've, i feel.
but goodfellas anyway because it had the "am i funny like a clown!??!" and the "go get your shoe shine box" scenes. and more stuff that would only be spoilers...
For me, Goodfellas is by far the superior film. Its achievement in is the place of something unique for its genre nd instead of just trying to tell a story, it is specifically made to get the feeling of the life. Casino, using that same style, extends it and brings it into the more typical of it just acting for a specific story, and a Hollywood esque one at that and that is the rise and fall of a man from power. Not really the most unique thing, but for what Casino does, it is still effective. Goodfellas, though, captures what wasn't or likely be ever captured before on film in trying to go for the intoxication of power from a life instead of trying to focus on telling a genre story done time and time again.

i love them both too much to make a choice. it's like asking which one of your children you like better.
I would rate them equally. Perhaps Goodfellas is considered more of a classic because Scorsese set a precendent with it which he lives up to in Casino, Goodfellas is just simply more original and came first. They're both great, though I think Casino has some more entertaining spice thrown in. I'd saw they were both pretty equally crafted though. Pax
casino wins it then.
Goodfellas.
*cough*
I prefer Casino. I love Casino. Goodfellas is a great movie, but I like Casino a whole lot more. It's a wonderful ride.
Quote from: SoNowThen
because I love Ballhaus
That's a coincidence; I just had a little Fassbinder-fest this last weekend in preparation for an article I'm writing, and had a chance to see some of Ballhaus's brilliant early work in
Fox and his Friends and
The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant. If you love Ballhaus and haven't seen either, you must do so at your earliest opportunity.
Petra in particular has a really lovely look to it.
I voted
Goodfellas, but it was fucking painful to decide. I love both. I think
Casino is the only really good movie Stone has ever been a part of, though I don't think she's untalented.
Goodfellas has a little more discipline, I guess, though it's questionable how important that is when it comes to Scorsese's style of filmmaking.
I don't think they're really "the same." I hear that a lot, but I think that other than their both being mob stories, there's a significant enough difference between them that they don't really seem like a pair. Plus, don't forget that
The Age of Innocence came in between. It wasn't like people were so tired of Scorsese making mobster movies that
Casino just seemed like a retread, or something.
casino, homies.
Casino... although it was really hard to choose from any of those. Anyway, I think Casino updated the style of GoodFellas and worked out even better than the earlier film.
And I do agree that the presence of James Woods makes a film even more pleasant to watch.
Goodfellas definitively!!!!!
The way how MS moves the camera here is just fantastic and the script is better than Casino, ok i liked Casino too but Goodfellas is a master piece
