Title: Bill Murray
Post by: Chest Rockwell on February 21, 2004, 09:12:30 PM
Well I thought he was amazing in Lost in Translation, Rushmore, Royal Tenenbaums, etc. I'm surprised no one's posted about him yet (I searched and found nothing, but I won't be too surprised if I'm redirected). Anyone else agree he should win the Best Actor award?

i agree!!!  and he also made my childhood what it was, seeing as how the ghostbusters movies were my world way back when

I also agree.  He has a very good shot.  It's about 50-50 between him and Sean Penn.

Now, I love Sean Penn, but just thinking about Bill Murray in Lost in Translation makes me feel as good as the movie did.  Sean Penn will be nominated again, probably.  This was Murray's perfect role, though, and those only come around once (or so).

another very tough decision here as in with best actress.  murrays acting was much more subtler than penn. penn gave a powerful performance as to murrays more reserved one (well the roles called for it and penn is really known for his powerful performances), but yes it would be great to see murray win!

and yes he was my favorite ghostbuster!

He was everone's favorite ghostbuster. Anyone that disagrees is just wierd. But seriously, i personally think he should win the Oscar, simply because he'll probably never get this much attention again while Sean Penn will go on to be one of those actors nominated every year. I personally think Penn's performance in 21 Grams was better than that in Mystic River, though. Comparatively speaking, I think there's no question of Bill's superiority when put up against Mystic River-Penn; had it been Bill vs. 21 Grams-Penn, it'd be a tougher call.

I think he deserves it. I mean, Sean Penn is great too, but Murray has been overlooked enough. Given his work in Rushmore and Groundhog Day, I think this should be his third nomination. I am probabl being a bit naive saying that, too. But I think it's about time the Oscars chose to recognize a great actor as flexible as Bill.

bill murray will win because the academy doesn't like actors who doesn't show up at the awards. i have nothing against sean penn but we all know how it works over there.

I don't know about that....I think they've been waiting to give it to Penn. And hasn't Bill publicly denounced the Oscars, calling them "bullshit politics" or something to that effect?

sort of...

imdb.com:

"Movie funnyman Bill Murray has no desire to win an Oscar - because awards mean nothing to him. And the 53-year-old Ghostbuster - who is favorite to win the Best Actor prize next year for his role in Lost In Translation - despises thespians who campaign for award recognition. Bill says, "It's a really unattractive sight to see an actor or actress who really wants an Oscar. And you often see it on the show, you see their faces and the desperation is so ugly. Desperation is not a quality I long for. I'm over the Oscar. Sometimes people win it and you think, 'This can't be true.' It's a little bit of a popularity contest, too. Sometimes it's right, but it's wrong just as often, so I don't care. I'd rather make movies that lots of people saw and liked. I'm happy with the results."

That was it: 'popularity contest' was what I was thinking of. Is he really the favorite? One friend of mine in a drama class holding a small contest to see who can predict the most Oscar winners came to me for help and I suggested Sean Penn before Bill Murray, though I told her it'd be one of the two for sure.

And Penn's performance was powerful, but not as subtle as Bill's. The latter's really affected moreso than the former's. Nuff said.

Murray Upset at Oscar Result

Actor Bill Murray shocked guests at Sunday night's Academy Awards - when he refused to clap as rival nominee Sean Penn was named Best Actor. The Lost In Translation star looked annoyed when Nicole Kidman announced Penn had won for his performance in Mystic River. According to British newspaper The Sun, Murray later shouted at organizers, "If I knew this was going to happen, I wouldn't have bothered coming." The 53-year-old comedian has made no secret of his dislike of award ceremonies, and didn't show up to collect the Best Actor award at London's BAFTAs last month. Murray has said, "Awards are meaningless to me, and I have nothing but disdain for anyone who actively campaigns to get one. It's a really unattractive sight to see an actor or actress who really wants an Oscar. And you often see it on the show - you see their faces and the desperation is so ugly."

It does seem a little out of character that he'd say something like, "I wouldn't have bothered coming." I think we could all tell he was upset, though, and I was surprised at this seeing as how he usually doesn't care about the awards. I bet he just wanted to provide some amazing acceptance speech.

Bill Murray Charms Brooklyn
Source: indieWIRE

The Brooklyn Academy of Music hosted a special evening with Bill Murray on Tuesday night, to kick off its "What About Bill Murray" retrospective (running through May 5); Brooklyn perhaps hasn't seen this much excitement since the days of the Dodgers. Every screening of the several Murray films shown on Tuesday was sold out, as was the Q&A discussion with Elvis Mitchell, held in the voluminous Opera House after the flicks. The museum has been trying to get Murray for three years; evidently the fans were just as eager, as Murray was greeted by a lengthy standing ovation when he took the stage. He drew laughs with jokes about "Meatballs," his story about meeting Hunter S. Thompson poolside in Aspen, and when asked where he got the "zen karma in his performances," replied "Bed, Bath & Beyond." Murray also offered more wise insights into his career and his profession, and talked about the sense of duty he felt when tackling Polonius in "Hamlet" and other more serious roles.

When an audience member asked about his role in Wes Anderson's forthcoming "The Life Aquatic," Murray said the shoot was "an absolute hell" as it stretched from a planned three months to more than five months, and the cast and crew had to deal with the cold Italian winter. But it was evidently worth it: "It's the best movie that [Anderson] has ever made," Murray said. "I'm proud of everything that's on the screen." When an audience member blurted out that Murray was robbed of the Oscar for "Lost in Translation," he smiled and assured that audience, "I'm really okay... I don't care about the prizes. Making movies is the only thing I can do really well in my life that's not a disaster." In closing, special guests told their favorite stories about Murray, from the producer that Murray pranked by putting gravel in his hubcaps to Jim Jarmusch's recollection of walking down the street 12 years ago when Murray recognized HIM and invited him out for a cup of coffee (Murray now appears as himself in Jarmusch's forthcoming "Coffee and Cigarettes.")

Before the Q&A, BUZZ was lucky enough to attend a rare screening of "Nothing Lasts Forever," a little-seen 1984 gem written and directed by Tom Schiller, one of the great SNL writers who happens to be married to our pal (and former indieWIRE editor) Jacque Lynn Schiller. The film is both retro and futuristic (and also perfectly mocks the '80s art scene), exploring a world in which New York City is ruled by the Port Authority and a man searches for love and artistic inspiration by taking a bus (manned by Bill Murray) to the moon. This was Schiller's only feature film, and Murray remarked that renewed interest in this one might spur Schiller to make another one. Murray called the director "one of the few people I think of as being truly brilliant," and also quipped that Schiller's old SNL sketches "come from another planet, like Tom."

Bill Murray to Get Lost Again
Source: Production Weekly

Lost in Translation star Bill Murray has joined the cast of Andy Garcia's The Lost City, a Cuban love story that also stars Dustin Hoffman, Tomas Millian and Ines Sastre. Hoffman will portray gangster Meyer Lansky while Murray takes the role as The Writer.

The film, written by G. Cabrera Infante, is set in Havana, Cuba, during the 50's when a club owner is caught in the turbulent transition from the oppressive regime of Batista to the Marxist government of Fidel Castro. Castro's regime ultimately leads the club owner to flee to New York.

Garcia is set to start shooting later this month in the Dominican Republic, says Production Weekly, with filming also scheduled for Miami and New York.

Bill Murray Gets Told Off

I'll say this right off the top: I LOVE Bill Murray. I can't think of a project he's done off the top of my head that I haven't loved him in.

Now, having said that, I have heard rumours now and then over the last couple of years that Bill is something of a jerk in real life. I remember all the reports of his ranting after failing to win an Oscar at the awards show last year. Now, the New York Post is reporting a REALLY awkward situation that just slapped Murray in the face at a press conference to promote his new film The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou:

At a Q&A session with director Wes Anderson, Anjelica Huston, Willem Dafoe and some of the rest of the cast at the Hollywood event, one man announced, "I am a cameraman, and I've worked with all the actors onstage. Anjelica, you're wonderful. Willem — you're great. But, Bill — you are a bastard. You are horrible to work with. My question is for Wes and the cast. What's it like to work with someone as awful and difficult as Bill Murray?" After a stunned silence, Huston muttered, "Bill isn't a bastard." Anderson demanded, "Why are you in a position to make such a statement?" Murray didn't react at all. "I was a cameraman on 'Charlie's Angels,' and Bill Murray is awful,"

Ouch! Now that's a little embarrassing. Before any of us take sides here, lets keep in mind that you don't know Bill Murray... neither do I. For all we know he could be the kindest most awesome guy in the world... or for all we know he could kick kittens and hide Osama Bin Ladin in his attic... the point is we just don't know. But if these stories about Murray (and I emphasize the word "IF") then it'll effect how much I'm able to enjoy seeing him on the big screen. It's hard to laugh at a jerk that you don't like. Therefore... I really hope these kinds of stories are all a bunch of crap. Have you heard of any more of these "Bill Murray is a jerk" rumours?

I've heard that he was a jerk on Charlies Angels... I was in film-school while it was being filmed and the casting director for that film did a guest lecture and he mentioned the Murray hated the experience and left the shoot in the middle of production and they had to edit around his absence.

Maybe he just hated the Angels.

Bill Murray Scoffs at 'Difficult' Label

Bill Murray gets defensive when told he has a reputation for being difficult. "If it keeps obnoxious people away, that's fine," he tells Time magazine in its editions on sale Monday. "It makes me think of that line you catch more flies with honey than vinegar. People say this to you with a straight face, and I always say, 'Who. Wants. Flies?'"

Murray, the star of "The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou," grew up in a blue-collar family and suggested his outbursts are generally spurred by an empathy for the underdog.

Recently on the set of his still-untitled film for director Jim Jarmusch, Murray got into a fracas with the location manager when he arrived at a rented house for a scene with child actors and discovered that there was no heat. When he started a fire in the fireplace, the location manager told him to stop.

"'Who are you?'" Murray told her. "She said, 'I'm locations.' I said, 'Well, if locations had done their job and made sure it was warm enough for these people, we wouldn't be lighting a fire in the fireplace.'"

But at the wrap party, Murray approached the woman again. "I said, 'You know, we had our moment, and I don't apologize for that for a second.'" But she had excelled at other aspects of her job, and Murray told her so. "I wanted to let her know I could see it both ways."

Bill Murray is in negotiations to reprise his role as the voice of Garfield in 20th Century Fox's sequel "Garfield 2," while Breckin Meyer and Jennifer Love Hewitt have signed on to return, though Hewitt's role will be greatly reduced because she is filming the upcoming CBS series "Ghost Whisperer." Lucy Davis and Billy Connolly also are entering the fat cat's lair. Davis, who recently joined the cast of the indie "The TV Set," will play animal lover Abby Westminster, a fashionable professional who has been brought in to try and trap Lord Dargis (Connelly) into revealing his evil plans. She is best known for her role on the U.K. version of "The Office." "Garfield 2," which will be directed by Tim Hill, is slated for a summer 2006 release. Fox president of production Hutch Parker and vp production Vanessa Morrison will oversee for the studio.

Murray elects to lead Kenan's 'City'
Walden, Playtone producing DuPrau novel
Source: Variety

Bill Murray will star in "City of Ember," the Walden Media adaptation of the Jeanne DuPrau young adult novel.

Gil Kenan ("Monster House") directs and Playtone partners Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman are producing.

Toby Jones ("Infamous") and Saoirse Ronan ("Atonement") also star.

Shooting begins this summer in Belfast and the film will be released Oct. 10, 2008, by 20th Century Fox through the joint marketing venture Fox Walden. John D. Schofield is exec producer.

Caroline Thompson wrote the script about an insular, dark place where the only light comes from street lamps. As the power source begins to fail, two teenagers search for clues that will unlock ancient mysteries about the city but they are thwarted by a corrupt mayor.

Project is one of three recent book adaptations for Playtone. Universal has just scheduled a Christmas Day bow for "Charlie Wilson's War," the drama based on the George Crile nonfiction book. Director Spike Jonze just wrapped an adaptation of the Maurice Sendak kid novel "Where the Wild Things Are" for Warner Bros. and Legendary.

Bill Murray interviewed by GQ here (http://www.gq.com/entertainment/celebrities/201008/bill-murray-dan-fierman-gq-interview?currentPage=all) .

According to Bill the reason he did Garfield was because he thought Joel Coen wrote it... but only when he was doing the voice recording did he find out it wasn't the Coen Brother Joel Coen.
