i'm starting to think casino is just as good, if not better than goodfellas. i don't know. there just seemed to be so much more shit going on in casino, the cinematography was way more innovative...

i don't know. why is casino considered to be one of scorsese's mediocre flicks while goodellas is an all-time classic?

Hm.

More innovative cinematography?  I dunno, you might get some dissension for that when you consider that long one-take from the outside to the inside of the club in Goodfellas.  Personally, I like Casino more, because I think the characters are more interesting and dynamic.  But it's really preference.  I'm aware of the influences Goodfellas had, and can understand both sides.  But there's something about the way Scorsese handled the epic story of Casino so well that I really dig.  I mean he threw his best punches when he made both films, running on all cylinders.  I think they were used to fuller effect for Casino.

i think goodfellas is terrific while i really dont like casino as much.  it's ok...but not the powerhouse that is goodfellas

I think that 'Casino' was the superior film. I love them both, but 'Goodfellas' really went to hell in its final act. 'Casino' remained consistant throughout. The more it went on, the more compelling it got. I found 'Casino' way more powerful, more involving. DeNiro was really under-rated in this, his roles in both films were very different. Pesci was a firecracker, using the same nasty persona, both characters have a violent temper (the difference being that one pulls the gun straight out while the other beats you lifeless).

When thinking of both films plus's and flaws, it's pretty much the flip of a coin. But 'Casino' wins out for me.

Personally, Goodfellas is my pick.  Casino was great, and the characters (as with pretty much every Marty flick) were interesting enough to watch, but Goodfellas was just more compelling to me.  The way the story flowed better, and in some parts Casino seemed to drag on when it didn't have to, clinched Goodfellas for me.  Some of my favorite camera work is in Goodfellas (I'm sure you all know what I'm talking about--the dolly from outside the club to the foot of the stage....)

Fucking great. :)

While I would never defend it publicly against the giant that is Goodfellas, I like Casino better. Always have. But, I'll tell you again when the Goodfellas Special Edition DVD comes out, and I finally get to see it in quality.

Though, to be honest, I think that the lighting is better in Goodfellas, because I love Ballhaus, and find Richardson a little gimmicky (the fucking blown out top light in every second fucking shot).

But the Casino soundtrack is a tiny bit cooler.

And as good as Bracco (sp?) is, Stone is a force in Casino. Also, the inclusion of James Woods makes the latter film even sweeter.
Those who say that the totalitarian state of the Soviet Union was not "real" Marxism also cannot admit that one simple feature of Marxism makes totalitarianism necessary:  the rejection of civil society. Since civil society is the sphere of private activity, its abolition and replacement by political society means that nothing private remains. That is already the essence of totalitarianism; and the moralistic practice of the trendy Left, which regards everything as political and sometimes reveals its hostility to free speech, does nothing to contradict this implication.

When those who hated capital and consumption (and Jews) in the 20th century murdered some hundred million people, and the poster children for the struggle against international capitalism and America are now fanatical Islamic terrorists, this puts recent enthusiasts in an awkward position. Most of them are too dense and shameless to appreciate it, and far too many are taken in by the moralistic and paternalistic rhetoric of the Left.

I think Casino has the superior cinematography... it was beautifully shot, the colors are vibrant, and the mood is more pleasing. I always thinkof Goodfellas as having a grittier look to it... a lot less refined. I love them both, but being a visual guy, I have to nod towards Casino.

I always thoughs I was alone on this one! I've always prefered Casino, too. Damn, this thread makes me want to pop it in again right now. It's very similar to Goodfellas, sure, but it ups the ante in almost every department. I can live without the bravura steadicam shot when everything else is so amazing.

sharon stone is hotter than lorraine bracco.

so Casino. tho not by far. other than her u hav the same cast and the same story. and u can replace Liotta with DON FREAKING RICKLES! what more do u want.

i would think of this the same way i currently rate The Shining as my fave, although 2001 is clearly the best. historically.
