Dave Matthews Band plans free concert in Central Park

NEW YORK (September 12, 1:10 p.m. ADT) - The Dave Matthews Band will perform a free concert in Central Park later this month to benefit the city's public schools, Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced Friday.

The "Dave Matthews Band in Central Park - The AOL Concert for Schools" will be held Sept. 24 on the park's Great Lawn. Free tickets will be distributed throughout New York City as part of a sweepstakes.

Bloomberg made the announcement at Central Park's Belvedere Castle, where he was joined by members of the Dave Matthews Band and executives of AOL.

The concert will benefit the Department of Education's Fund for Public Schools, a nonprofit group that raises support for the city's schools.

AOL has committed a minimum of $1 million, which will be used for music education programs. Concert organizers also will contribute an additional $1 million to the city.

No one will be allowed to enter the concert area without a ticket. There is a two-ticket limit, and they will be available in all five boroughs from Sept. 13-23 through AOL street teams. The teams will distribute tickets to pedestrians who will be able to immediately scan their tickets to learn if they have won.

Tickets also are available at the AOL Web site www.aol.com/dmbtix or the Dave Matthews Band Web site www.davematthewsband.com and through promotions on Infinity Broadcasting's radio stations in major cities across the country.

I believe this is also going to be streamed on AOL for all the AOL members out there, if interested..

Dave has a new solo album coming out too.  Here  (http://stores.musictoday.com/store/dept.asp?dept_id=633&band_id=290)are the details.

I dunno...I thought the Lillywhite Sessions/Busted Stuff was great.  BUT!Everyday was absolutely terrible.  "I Did It" might be their worst song ever.  But live they seem to make even songs off the shitty album sound better.

I'm seeing DMB tomorrow in Nashville. BTW, I quite liked Busted Stuff. Not great, but a pretty good solid album. And what is this Everyday that you all speak of? That album never happened. You must be imagining things.

Actually, I still rank Under the Table and Dreaming as their best album. Before These Crowded Streets would be second I guess.

Quote from: Pedro the WombatI thought the Lillywhite Sessions/Busted Stuff
oh...very true...I just am bitter that they didn't release this stuff to begin with (thank god for internet theives thou).  Everyday is horrible, and it wasn't until they realized this that they released busted stuff...what makes me mad is his shows have become pretty predicable.  For instance...there is a 80% chance that he will play either ants marching or watchtower for the encore.  hou he was whippin' out Stir me Up as recent as last year...

I just wish he didn't cater to what the "fratrock" fans wanted to here so much.

the new songs I dig....grey street, grace is gone (thou he has been playing it live for awhile), bartender, umm...I know there is more...

The Stone is still probably one of my favs thou overall.

that fiddler needs to be stopped.  I think the badness of their albums is proportional to how much attention they give to the fiddler.

I am actually impressed with this, as I tend to me over critical of what this band has become (fuckin' huge)...I got home too damn late from work though, so I missed teh first part...and pissed.

but right now...."Stop, baby...what's that sound everybody look what's going down..."

Sorry...but I am gonna turn this into the "Dave Matthews Band" thread...if as much as I depise some of their newer stuff....maybe I can at least share what I like, as well as get some stuff in return....do with it what you will.

My 1st suggestions...

Hooray... the 4 billion $ Bloomberg wants to do something... should I actually care... I don't care who's playing.  Let him dish out his own cash before sucking it out of everyone else without cash. Rich men sleep in the house of filth.

Hold your tongue!

I have to say BTCS is their best, aside from their live bootleg shit.

Everyday may have not been up to DMB par, but some songs (When the World Ends, Space Between, Everyday, for instance) Still rocked, IMHO.

Dave Matthews Band's Big Stink

Wed Aug 25, 6:35 PM ET  Add Entertainment - E! Online to My Yahoo!

By Josh Grossberg

This probably wasn't what Dave had in mind when he wrote "Don't Drink the Water."

The state of Illinois has filed a lawsuit against the Dave Matthews Band for allegedly dumping up to 800 pounds of liquid human waste from its tour bus into the Chicago River earlier this month.

The suit, filed on Tuesday by Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan, claims that a bus rented by the usually eco-friendly group was traveling cross town to the band's hotel on Aug. 8 when it pulled up alongside a metal grating on the Kinzie Street Bridge. That's when, the suit claims, bus driver Stefan A. Wohl emptied the contents of the vehicle's septic tank into the river.

And that was bad news for Chicago's First Lady, a passing tour boat filled with 100 people on an architecture sightseeing cruise that was doused by the falling excrement.

No one was seriously hurt by the raining waste. The boat's captain made a U-turn and headed back to the dock, where reeking passengers were given refunds and the ship was thoroughly cleaned and sanitized.

According to authorities, the incident was caught on videotape

Madigan seeks more than $70,000 in civil penalties from the Dave Matthews Band and their driver for violating the state's water pollution and public nuisance laws.

"This incident may be unique, but that does not lessen the environmental or public health risks posed by the release of at least 800 pounds of liquid human waste into a busy waterway and onto a crowded tour boat," Madigan said in a statement.

Chicago police said Wednesday that they are reviewing the evidence and may also file criminal charges against the band and driver.

DMB's spokesman, John Vlautin, says this isn't the kind of jam the band is used to and says any pollution was not intentional.

"Our driver has stated that he was not involved in this incident," Vlautin said in a statement, adding that the band "will continue to be cooperative in this investigation."

No word on whether any of the tainted tourists plan to take legal action against the rockers.

The Dave Matthews Band will presumably keep their waste under control as they continue on their current tour, which is now on the road on the West Coast for the next month before linking up with the Vote for Change tour. The politically motivated trek, featuring the likes of Bruce Springsteen (news), the Dixie Chicks (news - web sites), Pearl Jam and John Mellencamp (news), will play 34 shows in 28 cities in swing states in an effort to unseat President Bush (news - web sites).

DMB will hook up with Jurassic Five and My Morning Jacket for six dates, starting Oct. 1 at University Park, Pennsylvania, and continuing on to Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin, Iowa and Florida.

Or to get a contact high.

Maybe the shit-dumping incident is a metaphor for DMB's last few albums?

dmb is like a gateway band, kinda like pot.  it's got all the right ideas about how a rock band can be good--eclectic performers of different influences, a tight sound, open song structures that allow for sweet jams and solos, creative chord progressions, hooks...etc.  but DMB itself really isn't really that good at any of that, with the exception of the drummer, the rest of the band is extremely average in a tolerably poppy kind of way.  the fiddler sucks, the sax guy is one step closer to smooth jazz with each album, and their jams are meaningless and meander a bunch--but they draw such attention to all these things and in their live shows they really make an attempt to showcase the various (mediocre) aspects of their band, so average high school kids can say, whoa, the rhythm guitar and the drummer are playing separate grooves right now but they are still together, or hey, that solo guitarist is improvising to a set of structured chords...etc., so then hopefully these kids, these listeners of mainstream music can go off to delve into bigger and better things--or the albums of their collaoborators like Bela Fleck and Victor Wooten, or Phish, or even Jurassic 5.  I have a few friends, me included, that are ashamed in admitting how well we know the band, 'cause we really don't dig the band anymore, but have found some great music one way or the other through the average band.
that's why the DMB fanbase sucks, if you stay with them for more than a few years then you're just really shallow and you probably don't even understand their music.  because if Dave Matthews was listening to himself, he'd move on to better musicians too.
