My first nomination: Andie MacDowell.

Jim Carrey (quit making those faces)
Woody Harrelson (cut back on the ganga and shut your liberal mouth)

Honorable Mention:
Robin Williams (may potentially redeem himself after "One Hour Photo")

Oh, man. I could get down on this thread.

Wow, Kathy Bates? Really? I think she is remarkable, one of my favorite actresses- great in Fried Green Tomatoes and Primary Colors. Have you seen those?

An actor that kind of gets on my nerves- John Cusack. I dig most of his movies, and think he's a good actor, but there's something about him that gets under my skin. (I can't wait to see Max though) However, I really like Joan Cusack.

No, I was just saying that because I wanted to post    ..... Yes, she gets on my nerves for some reason. I think she is a very good actress, and maybe that has something to do with me being annoyed by her. I think its her face, not saying it is ugly or bad looking, just the structure and nature of expressions irritates me. I have seen those movies.

Russel Crowe.  Not acting wise (though Gladiator was incredibly overrated) but something about him just gets to me.  I just want to eat his arms?  Not exactly sure  but I think it has to do with his voice?

I don't think the acting Gladiator is over-acting. It's almost impossible to compare Gladiator and Traffic, two completely different movies in every way.

It may seen like they are overacting in Gladiator, but I think it comes with the nature of the piece, which is very dramatic, very theatrical and almost Shakesperean. When you watch Hamlet do you think they are over-acting?

Traffic sides on realism, the actors are more subtle. Doesn't mean that is good acting and the acting in Gladiator is heavy-handed, it's two different styles.

Ok, first of all, I'd like to see you defend Gladiator as Shakespearean. Yes, Shakespearean acting is very melodramatic (who knows if he intended it that way, or if Shakespearean acting really hasn't evolved. There are great Shakespeare films that are completely not overacted. See "Titus") but you need the language to back it up--and Gladiator's writing is some of the most hollow, pretentious fluff that I have ever been exposed to.

Robin Williams is so damn annoying and so in need of validation that its sad and pathetic.  Did anyone see him on the critic's choice awards.  He virtually hijacked Jack Nicholson's acceptance speech.

Also, Russell Crowe is pretentious and not that talented, in my opinion.

I love Witherspoon, but I hate Affleck. With him and J. Lo it's like that annoying couple that walks through the high school and is always making lovey dovey faces at each other only they both have a bajillion dollars and can afford to go on lovey dovey mercedes benz shopping sprees. Enough already! And J. Lo herself could have had a respectable movie career (Out of Sight was awesome, she was good in Selena), but now she's in crap that just makes me feel like she's more annoying than ever (Maid in Manhattan, Enough).

I think I might have to change my vote:

Entertainment Weekly reports that producer Lee Daniels, who helped Halle Berry transform from mere hottie to Oscar winning with Monster's Ball, will reinvent songbird Macy Gray as a movie star.

Daniels has cast the psychedelic singer in a musical titled Donkey Skin. "It's about a princess and a donkey that poops gold," says Daniels. "It's based on a classic fairy tale by the same writer of "Puss in Boots" and "Cinderella".

If it sounds familiar, that's because it's already been made into a film, 1970's Peau d'ane, starring Catherine Deneuve.

Gray could also be seen briefly in Spider-Man last year during the World Unity Festival scene.

Post by: Gold Trumpet on June 07, 2003, 12:15:34 PM
I'll agree with Russel Crowe. He really is an actor who is trying his hardest to be that leading man type, but he really lacks all the charisma of that man when trying to play that part. But he tries so hard to be suave and have that kind of look when his vocal abilities and look and appearance in general just keep him back. Watching A Beautiful Mind is to watch someone trying so hard to play that kind of part with little success.

The other that comes to mind is Renee Zelwegger. As hard as she tries too, she doesn't seem comfortable in her own skin. Her acting is her just trying to say a line without giving a twitch or glance that something is wrong and she is freaking out over nothing. And as Stanley Kauffmann once said, Neil Labute's greatest achievement may in fact be that he made her bearable to watch.

Robin Williams -- two decades of over-the-top wackiness mixed with unbearable pathos equals the worst actor in film.

Bette Midler -- ugh.

Goldie Hawn -- too cutesy (the male Robin Williams).

Kevin Costner -- so bland that it is hard to get offended by his lack of talent.

Mel Gibson -- how did this guy get to be a movie star?  No one has supplied a reasonable answer to this question after 20 years.

Ben Affleck -- the smirking frat boy routine is getting old.

Bruce Willis -- the smirking middle age man routine is getting old.

Al Pacino -- in the 70's, he rocked.  It ain't the 70's any more.  Hoo-hah!

As far as I'm concerned, despite their disparity in looks, Drew Barrymore is Renee Zellweger's equal in annoyance. They're not great, but their mediocrity is no big deal to me.

The person whose "acting" style I have found most annoying by far is that Madonna, who apparently does not understand that acting involves much more than posing and mugging your way through a music video ever will. I was sent to a press screening of The Next Best Thing, and I've seen my share of awful movies and terrible performances, but--I just wanted to throttle her and her horrible character. I think I was more traumatized than annoyed. Just . . . horrible.

A distant second is Ryan Reynolds in Waiting. I hated the movie, and I especially hated the thick layer of smarm in which Reynolds was coated every second he was onscreen.

On the tendency to mistake lack of sexiness for annoying acting: As far as I'm concerned, John Goodman is just as fucking good an actor as George Clooney. But because he's fat, he's too often been consigned to shit like King Ralph. That's one example. Another is Kathy Bates, who is also very good (she's the main reason to watch the underrated Primary Colors), but ditto on the preponderance of "wacky" parts she's stuck with because of age/body. Much of the commentary on About Schmidt and the hot tub scene confirmed some of my worst suspicions about our culture's thinking. Hence, I go out of my way to avoid equating lack of magazine-spread hotness with absence of talent. I think that it's a tremendous deficiency in judgment if you're seriously annoyed just because someone onscreen isn't going to be occupying your wet dreams. I mean, "Renee Zellweger annoys me because she's ugly . . . " I have to say I find comments like that much more annoying than I'd ever find the relatively harmless Renee Zellweger.

Oh, yeah, Unconditional Love was strictly Lifetime. Great Don't Look Now joke, though. But totally, beyond cliche for Kathy Bates to play that role. Rupert Everett's blandness paled in comparison to the now-auteur (*shudder*) Madonna in Next Best Thing, but it was more noticeable there. His blandness doesn't really annoy me that much, but yeah . . . he's bland.

Jar Jar Binks So Annoying
Beating out characters played by Pauly Shore and Rosie O'Donnell, Jar Jar Binks has been voted the most annoying movie character ever.

Despite the nails-on-the-blackboard quality of the character played by Chris Tucker in The Fifth Element, and disregarding the entire careers of Pauly Shore, Rosie O'Donnell and Andy Dick, the most annoying character in film history is digital.

Daily Variety quotes a poll conducted by the LoveFilm.com website that crowns Star Wars: Episode I character Jar Jar Binks as the most annoying character in the history of film. Maybe they missed Spice World.

In any case, 5,000 fans chose the clumsy Gungan as the most annoying film character of all time, beating Andie MacDowell's character in Four Weddings and a Funeral. Rowan Atkinson's character Bean was named third, followed by Ace Ventura, who was brought to life by Jim Carrey, and Ben Stiller's character in Dodgeball.

Haha. But Brendan is good. Okay, he's not, but he tries! He's picked some killer roles a few times. Plus he seems like a really nice guy.

Costner's Cleanup Machines to Be Tested in GulfUpdated: 5 hours 48 minutes ago

AOL News (May 20) -- The "Waterworld" references are already flowing, but actor Kevin Costner's commitment to the BP oil spill cleanup is more than just a celebrity photo op. After investing 15 years and millions of his own money in new oil-separation technology, Costner hopes to help clean the oil from the waters of the Gulf of Mexico at a faster and more successful rate than ever before.

Moved by the catastrophic Exxon Valdez spill in 1989, the Oscar winner and ardent fisherman bought new centrifugal oil separators from the government in 1995, investing $24 million to develop the vacuum-like machines for the private sector.

WDSU-TV
This device, funded by Kevin Costner, is described as a centrifugal processing device that separates oil from water. Costner hopes the device will help with the Gulf oil spill cleanup efforts.
Fifteen years later, BP has approved six of the machines for testing in the gulf, where they will extract the spilled oil, send it back to a tanker and pump 99 percent purified water back into the ocean.

Costner's business partner in Ocean Therapy Solutions, Louisiana trial attorney John Houghtaling, said the machines could be in the water as early as Friday.

"The technology works," Houghtaling told AOL News. "We know the technology works and we know it's really the only solution."

BP confirmed that it planned to use Costner's machines in the cleanup effort, with spokesman Mark Salt telling AOL News today that "we've agreed to test them."

Costner tapped his scientist brother, Dan, and Houghtaling to aid in the cleanup efforts after the massive spill on April 20, years after Costner first took a keen interest in separation technology.

"He didn't get investors. He did it all himself," Houghtaling said of Costner's multimillion-dollar investment. "His single purpose was that if there was ever going to be another massive oil spill, this machine was going to be able to separate the oil from the water."

That sort of spill came last month, after an explosion on the Deepwater Horizon oil rig located off the Louisiana coast.

"Kevin didn't get involved with this opportunistically ... he's an environmentalist," Houghtaling said. "We know him as a big movie star, but he's a very big hunter and fisher."

Though oil-extracting machines had been in use for decades, Houghtaling said they are slower and less effective than those developed by Ocean Therapy Solutions. He said the new machines not only clean the polluted water but sift out pure, reusable oil.

"What struck Kevin was that we had this same separation technology for years -- how is it that we can go to the moon in the '60s but we can't advance our separation technology?" Houghtaling said.

Costner and Houghtaling demonstrated the machines for local leaders and reporters at a New Orleans news conference last week.

"I'm very happy the light of day has come to this," Costner said of the technology, telling a reporter that he was "very sad" over the spill, but saying of the machinery, "This is why it's developed."

BP said Wednesday that it will attempt a tactic known as a "top kill" as early as May 23 in an attempt to cement and seal the well. The company has pledged to pay for the rising cost of the spill, estimated at $625 million (and counting).

For Houghtaling, joining Costner's endeavor and funding the advanced centrifuge technology meant recusing himself from potentially lucrative litigation in which he was representing oyster fisherman against BP.

I just saw Last Night at the theaters.

It is a Closer-wannabe written and directed by a creature lacking any iota of talent. Acted in the worst possible manner by all the cast. Starring Sam Worthlessington, Eva Mendes (why the fuck) and a Guillaume Canet acting so bad he almost seem retarded.

Ive never been so annoyed by a cast.

Haha, I didn't mind Knightley/Canet but the Mendes/Worthington stuff was AW-FUL.

I watched this movie on Netflix Instant not too long ago.  Not a very good movie, but watchable enough on a bored afternoon.  It stars Amber Tamblyn, a pre-Social-Network Armie Hammer, and the single worst performance I have ever seen by a professional actor, by Aidan Gillen.  He currently spends his days fucking up every scene he's in on the otherwise excellent Game of Thrones, but in this flick he takes it to a whole new level.  I'm willing to cut a little slack to the fact that he had to do an American accent (he's Irish), but even that doesn't account for the baffling nature of some of his line readings.  I was half-convinced it was going to turn out that his character was secretly an alien from outer space who had just landed a week earlier and took an online course in human behavior, but no, as it turns out, he's just that bad an actor.  I don't even feel like I'm describing this performance in harsh enough terms, so I'll have to make some up: it was the most painfuckular, rapefacetical performance I have ever seen.  Two thumbs way up.  Up my ear canals and into my brain.

Wow I'm curious to watch it because I found that actor pretty good in The Wire. I mean he wasn't the best of the bunch but I definitely rooted for him and thought he had a good face.

Though I am sure he must be rapefacetical so I'd like to see that.

I don't want to change the subject to Sam Worthington but I'll do. Isn't he the worst? How can he have a career all of a sudden? Since the last 5 years or so he's been in huge films and he has always been awful from day one. Who likes him, and how can they?

I've still only gotten around to watching the first two seasons of The Wire (don't hit me!), so I can't speak to the quality of his acting in that, but in the two things I've seen him in, he's been terrible. He's not so distractingly bad on Game of Thrones, but he's definitely a weak link in the cast. In Black Out, I don't know how he was even able to cash his paycheck in good conscience.

As for Sam Worthington, I don't think he's that bad. I don't think he's that good. I don't think he's much of anything. He's a Spam sandwich on Wonderbread with low-fat mayonnaise. A beige Subaru Outback going 30 miles per hour in a 35 zone.

Interesting, I really like Aiden Gillen in The Wire and Game of Thrones. He excels at playing charming yet full of shit characters. That monologue at the end of Season Three of The Wire was so moving until you realized he wasn't saying anything at all.

Leave Aiden Gillen alone!

His performance in Game of Thrones is growing on me after the last episode, but that doesn't change how I feel about his acting in Blackout.  I really wish Netflix still had it on Instant, because I want everyone to watch it so they know what I'm talking about.  He really was that bad, I swear I'm not making it up!
