What is the best cover ever made?
DJ Dingo doing Lady in Red? I don't think so...
The best?
Redirect if needed...what am I talking about. You'll be redirecting me before I post this. :)
The most overplayed would be Alien Ant Farm's cover of Smooth Criminal.
Quote from: Jeremy BlackmanThe most overplayed would be Alien Ant Farm's cover of Smooth Criminal.
That's a farly good cover but, overplayed as you said...
Noel Gallagher's version of Help.
Fiona Apple, "Across the Universe." I think I like it better than the original. Plus, it has a better music video.
The only right answer to this is "All Along the Watchtower" by Jimi Hendrix.
Metallica's done a great cover of a song...but I can't remeber the song nor the band...do you know which song I mean? :?

Best answer so far...but what about...
Joe Cocker - With A Little Help From My Friends
I Shot The Sheriff by Eric Clapton is liked by most but I like Marley's much better. Even Clapton called Marley a "musical genius".
Two more:
"I Fought The Law" by the Clash
and
"Love in Vain" by the Rolling Stones
Quote from: Pedro the WombatQuote from: kotteMetallica's done a great cover of a song...but I can't remeber the song nor the band...do you know which song I mean? :?

Metallica does do a decent cover of this song, but I think the fashion in which they did the song takes away from the concept of the song and what makes it great. The song is about being out on your own and when Seger performs(ed?) it, he basically did it all alone. He was on the stage just like the song, all alone, playing the star again.
Johnny Cash - Hurt
Wild Horses, Mazzy Star
I remember Patti Smith doing a live cover of The Ronettes' "Be My Baby" that was pretty fucking great.
Sleater-Kinney covering Jefferson Airplane's "White Rabbit" live was a revelation, too.
Jeff Buckley "Mama You Been On My Mind"
anyone heard sonic youths cover of madonnas get into the groove? it's the ultimate cover ever.
anyway, bucleys halleluja is good, sex pistols my way is funny but weird al yankovich's polka your eyes out takes the cake.
sweet jane-cowboy junkies
It's gotta be the Smashing Pumpkins cover of Never Let Me Down Again... my two favorite bands, now interlocked forever!
limp bizcutss---- faith...
but seriously...
TooL's no quater is better than Led Zeppelins's
Revolting Cocks' version of "If Ya Think I'm Sexy" is brilliant
Gypsi King's Hotel California
Coil's Tainted Love
White Stripes' Jolene... on that note Sisters of Mercy's cover of Jolene and Give Me Shelter
Nine Inch Nails' covers of Suck and Physical
Oh yeah... Tricky's Black Steel ... most of Tricky's covers are pretty good.
Quote from: NEON MERCURYTooL's no quater is better than Led Zeppelins's
I like LZ's a lot better. I seem to be the only person who doesn't think Plant sounds annoying in it.
Ben Folds cover of Tiny Dancer.

I do and let me tell you what I believe. I believe that Morpheus means more to me than he does to you. I believe if you are really serious about rescuing him, you are going to need my help. And since I am the ranking officer on this ship, if you don't like it... I believe you can go to hell. Because you're not going anywhere else. Tank, load us up.
Totally have to agree with Jeremy Blackman.

I like that one... but I like the original a lot better.
Just to clarify, I meant I liked NIN's cover of the song "Suck"... I didn't mean his covers suck.
got you all beat....
jimi hendrix 'hey joe'
HOLY SHIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I saw the White Stripes, live, and they did Jolene, and I about pissed myself!!!
You know what I loved the most? I hate it when people do covers and they change the words to fit their sex. Like if a girl originally sings it about a guy she'll say "he" or whatever, and vice versa and the people doing the cover change it to "she". I am not sure why, it's just a pet peeve of mine. But they (Jack and Meg) didn't change a word. So I just stood in the dark, surrounded by a haze of smoke, smiling staring into the night air. It was awesome.
Quote from: classical gasgot you all beat....

...I like Patti Smith's cover of Jimi's cover even better... She definitely revises, ha ha.
Hole's cover of Young Marble Giants' "Credit in the Straight World" is a radical remake, nothing at all like the original, yet not disrespectful at all... I like that one.
As far as the Sonic Youth cover of Madonna, they did it as Ciccione Youth in the late 80's, but my best cover for the last 20 years... Patti Smith's "Gloria" but many others are great but escape my grasp...and my moment. A little too much Saumur... live life.

Morrissey would always leave the original gender intact in covers such as Twinkle's "Golden Lights," Cilla Black's "Work is a Four-Letter Word," and The Cookies' "I Want a Boy for my Birthday."
Primus - In The Flesh (Pink Floyd)
Johnny Cash - Hurt (NIN)
White Stripes - Jolene (Dolly Parton)
Ben Folds - She Don't Use Jelly (Flaming Lips)
Dave Matthews Band - Stairway To Heaven (Led Zeppelin)
Jim's Big Ego - Stress (Dr. Demento)
Flaming Lips f/ Nick Cave - What A Wonderful World (Louis Armstrong?)
NOFX - Last Caress
System of a Down - Goodbye Blue Sky (Pink Floyd)
System of a Down - Metro (Berlin)
hey walrus, have you heard ben folds live cover of elliott smith's "say yes". its really pretty/.
Of course, of White Stripes covers, "I Just Don't Know What to Do with Myself" probably goes without saying... still, an excellent and rather unexpected cover.

Elliott Smith's cover of Garbage's "Thirteen" pwns the original.

Oasis played alive a cover of revolution...wonderful (and i hopefully taped from the concert)
and one of my favourite is U2 cover of "I can't help falling in love" from Elvis...
Aretha Franklin "Respect"
...and while I'm thinking about it...
Otis Redding "Satisfaction"
also
Cream "The Crossroads"
Quote from: ShanghaiOrangeThe only right answer to this is "All Along the Watchtower" by Jimi Hendrix.
unless you're talking about u2's. one of the few songs of theirs that i will openly and willingly bash. it sucked. so did their helter skelter. it is my opinion that nobody, but nobody, should cover any beatles song.
on the db boards, there's a thread for covers i'd like to hear. http://loserboy281.proboards14.com/index.cgi?board=Good&action=display&num=1058335786
ben folds' tiny dancer was pretty good.
nobody can argue with Jame's Taylor's You've Got A Friend by Carole King, though.
system did do goodbye blue sky by pink floyd. that was undeniably cool just because it was what it was, but otherwise unnoteworthy.

"Jealous guy" Brian Ferry (John Lennon)
"If you don't know me by now" Simply Red (Harold Melvin/The Blue Notes)
"Can't make you love me" George Michael (Bonnie Raitt)
"Never never gonna give you up" Lisa Stansfield (Barry White)
"Mercy mercy me" Robert Palmer (Marvin Gaye)
Lisa Bonet - "Baby I Love Your Way" from High Fidelity
If anyone knows where I can find this, please tell me, because its not on the soundtrack.

i'd like to hear of a band that hasn't done that cover. NOFX has made the most brilliant, tho.
The Flaming Lips - Can't get you out of my head. (Ha!)
Rooney - Here Today, Gone Tomorrow
this one's in spanish :
Panda- Maracas
the dillinger escape plan - like i love you
or maybe not...
The Stooges "I Wanna Be Your Dog" as covered by Sonic Youth. Fucking scary. :(
"Viva Las Vegas" by the Dead Kennedys
Any cover by the Ramones, but specifically "California Sun" and the whole of Acid Eaters.
"Young Man Blues" and "Shakin' All Over" by the Who
"Farmer John" by Neil Young
Elliott Smith- "Waterloo Sunset" (Ray Davies)
Jeff Buckley- "Lilac Wine" (Nina Simone)
The Sundays- "Wild Horses" ('Stones)
Cat Power- "Yesterday is Here" (Tom Waits)
Failure- "Enjoy the Silence" (Depeche Mode)
Smashing Pumpkins- "Never Let Me Down Again" (Depeche Mode)
Tool- "No Quarter" (Led Zeppelin)
A Perfect Circle- "The Nurse Who Loved Me" (Failure)

Bob Dylans "All Along the Watchtower" by Hendrix
no quarter, TOOL.
Sonic reducer, Pearl Jam.
Chris cornell's on the christmas album was good too.

Phil Marlowe is a much bigger fan than I am. If you like Patton look into Radiation 4, they remind me of something he would do
I saw Tomahawk last year. It was the first time I saw Mike Patton in action. He was both fucking mad and very cool and relaxed.
what about PEARL JAM!!!
i think pearl jam is one of the bands that have made more covers...and i think theyre great! sometimes the song sounds much better!...and hearing those covers alive is just...just....
i saw them on july 17 and 19 here in Mexico City.
the last concert (that was also the last one of the whole tour) was just amazing. They played some covers:LAST KISS, YOUVE GOT TO HIDE YOUR LOVE AWAY,KEEP ON ROCKING IN THE FREE WORLD, I BELIVE IN MIRACLES, HUNGER STRIKE (i dont know if i can call this last one a cover....but it was awasome)and some of them with the help of sleater kinney...
they also play with a "mariachi" LAS MAÑANITAS (a birthday song) because of stone gossard's birthday; they wore "el santo" masks....it was incredible. one of my favourite concerts.

another great cover is "heroin", cover of The Doors by The Velvet Underground.
and Patton!!!...well...i dont have anything more to say about him, youve said it all.
even though i love mike patton to death, it kinda sucks that he takes so much credit all the time. as far as i know then fanthomas is the only project of his that is fully his own, while in bungle and fnm he had no bigger creative control than any of the other members, everything in tomahawk is written only by the guitarist, and i think that most people see that as mikes group.
every bungle fan should give secret chiefs 3 a listen, which is basically mr bungly without patton and the saxophonist. they're really really great.
how could anyone not mention the Pet Shop Boys' Where the Streets Have No Name (I can't take my eyes
off you) ?????

Of course, most reviews I've read of the album didn't even know the song was a cover. :?

dolly parton's cover of collective soul's "shine"
kiss' cover of rolling stones' "2000 man"
jeff buckley does "hallelujah"
nina simone has a whole album of great covers, especially "I shall be released" and "here comes the sun"

I remember when I first came to America, I was like 13, and I went to the mall's record store 'cause I wanted the top gun soundtrack. I didn't remember the name of the movie so I just told the guy I was looking for music from this old movie that went like this: "dah dah dah dah dah" as I hummed the first five notes of "Take My Breath Away" and the guy went "yeah sure" and then came back with Sister Act ("I Will Follow Him.")

Sorry, this belongs to the Gourds... they did the best cover and all the others are wannabes.
I'm sure you've all seen the new Levi's commercials advertising their skinny straight leg jeans with someone covering Johnny Cash- Walk The Line. I googled the shit out of the commercial trying to come up with the artists and came up with this:
"It is a modern version of the Johnny Cash song "Walk the line" the female version is sung by Megan Wyler, an American singer, she does not have any commercially released work as of today. The male version is Adem IIhan, who performs in the British band Fridge."
I like both.
my least favorite version of Walk the Line is by those three brothers, Los somethingrather. that sucked. my favorite version, don't think is the best version, is by dolly parton.
tv on the radio - mr. grieves
Deerhoof - Bungalow Bill
Thinking about putting together a cd of cover songs, even better if they're live cuts.
i was thinking about stuff like John Frusciante's Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow, Jolene by the White Stripes, Comfortably Numb by Van Morrison (I know this is still Pink Floyd too, but you get my point......)
Any suggestions?
First, I'd suggest...
http://xixax.com/index.php?board=17.0
Then I'd suggest a cool cover of "What a Wonderful World" by Nick Cave and the Flaming Lips. Also, the "Moon River" cover by Vincent Gallo, John Frusciante and PJ Harvey.
How in the hell did I miss that category???
But, THANKS!!! Still, don't want to kill this thread..........maybe an admin could move it??
From Idle Chatter to Real Life Soundtracks. Doesn't bother me, but it would be more fitting.
