Whiskeytown's best album is "Pneumonia".  If you liked their others, definitely give that one a try.

actually the common thought is that Strangers Almanac is best but I think Pneumonia is my favorite too.  also: i'm just now listening to the first song on the new Ryan Adams "A Kiss Before I Go" and GODDAMN is that country.  like, serious Gram Parsons.

NEON, try these...

Sacred Hearts and Fallen Angels: The Gram Parsons Anthology

Sweetheart of the Rodeo: The Byrds

so would you recommend Bonnie Prince Billy to me?  cause i've heard of him a bit but never heard him before and i could use some more alt-country.
Christopher Nolan's directive was clear to everyone in the cast and crew: Use CGI only as a last resort.

Fuck ryan adams. But will oldham is pretty good, i enjoyed the cd I See a Darkness, especially the first track "Minor Place" and a few other melodies that caught me off guard with greatness throughout the rest of the cd. The bonnie billie & matt sweeney cd Superwolf has become a favorite of mine though, the electric guitar adds something that i felt was missing from i see a darkness....will oldham's voice is sort of an aquired taste but i found it really easy to warm up to, in much the same way i warmed up to Devendra Banhart's wacky vocals...i'd recommend either of those cds

great avatar, squints.

i agree with the music advice, too.

Obviously what you are doing right now is called (in my upcoming book of psychology at least) validation. I think it's a normal thing to do. People will reply, say anything, and then you're gonna do what you were subconsciently thinking of doing all along.

i would be glad to recomend some BPB to you.

palace music///viva last blues
this was the first will oldham/bonnie prince billy/palce[music/brothers](its all the same...just different monikers) but i will  warn you his voice is very...um, odd at times.  it cracks and there are alot of highs. he sounds like he is going through puberty.  and at times he sounds completely drunk.  but the beautiful thing is that when you hear it-it all fits in well w/ the music.  but if you can listen to conner oberst and be able to stand his voice, then this should be easy :yabbse-grin:  .....favorite track: the brute choir...if you like this song then buy the album

bonnie "prince" billy///i see a darkness
i think this one is his most accessible album.  its sung very well and i do like all the songs w/o  skipping or feeling bored.  this album is dark though.  it has a very depressed vibe about it.  like lou reed's "berlin".
favorite track: nomadic revery [all around]...but the song "black" is beautiful also...

bonnie prince billy and matthew sweeny///superwolf
even though sweeny's name is on the cover, its still all oldham.  as squints mentioned this one is more electric.  its very good.  and my reconendationm depends on how you feel about mostly electric rather than acoustic.  but its solid stuff-ask pitchforkmedia :yabbse-wink:

bonnie "prince" billy///sings greatest palace music
thsi is a cool one.  basically, its a greatest hits of oldham picked by the fans.  and its all good shit.  the difference is that its got more of a gloss country feel to the songs and they are very different takes on the tunes.
even oldham sings much better.  i like this one.

this is all i know so far.
let me know if pick one up.

More suggestions for you NEON:

Iron & Wine - The Creek Drank the Cradle (2002)
I love this album and actually prefer it (at this time) to Our Endless Numbered Days.  Beautiful, intimate songs.  I strongly recommend after noticing it missing from your collection.

Smog - A River Ain't Too Much to Love (2005)
I'm surprised meatwad didn't mention this one after having it on his favorite albums of 2005 (so far).  There's some nice stuff on this record.  "Say Valley Maker" is a favorite.

Hayden - Skyscraper National Park[/u] (2002)
I haven't heard this whole album, only a handful of songs...but I look forward to purchasing it.  I really enjoy what I've heard so far.  I've heard Elk Lake Serenade is good also.

Crooked Fingers - Dignity and Shame (2005)
I'm not sure how I feel about this album yet.  You might like it, however.  Find some samples.

Califone - Heron King Blues (2004)
A decent album that plays some with electronica.  I was disappointed by it, honestly.  But, thought I'd throw it out there.  I haven't heard any of Califone's earlier stuff.

pinetop seven

i just recently got into them...this is going to sound sort of wierd but they remind me of if tool was an alt-countryt band they would sound like pinetop seven..i mean that in the way they play intricate, dark, brooding, music...and the singer has an unbeleivable range...like maynard...

so far only when she's in New Pornographers.  i haven't heard any of her actual solo stuff but i've been meaning to seek some out recently.
She's got a new one out now.  Her last one was pretty amazing, so I thought I'd check it out.  Saw her in concert a few years ago.  It was good times.
