Saw this at the library and picked it up on Brett Ratner's recommendation (hehe) and loved it. He's right, though, the beginning of the film is VERY Paul Thomas Anderson. There were things in there straight out of Boogie Nights. This movie was really amazing. It's awe inspiring to look at. How in the hell they got some of those shots is beyond me... even by today's standards. The only thing that I hated about this movie (and I mean really really hated) was that the whole thing was filmed without sound and all lines (mostly in spanish) were dubbed. That's not what pissed me off though. Over every line, a russian narrator would say what the character was saying in russian. So it was dubbed over twice and I couldn't hear the spanish dialogue. There wasn't much dialogue, though, and the cinematography and powerful story (or stories I should say, it's a series of 4 vignettes during Batista's reign in Cuba when the communists were revolting against him) more than made up for it.

Does anybody know the story behind this movie? Coppola and Scorsese somehow saw it and released it in America in 1995? I know it would never see the light of day in america at the time it was released, being a pro-communism film from Russia and all.

Anyway, if you get a chance to see this, do so. It's worth it.

i just think some films should be just judged by the beauty of the way they were shot

and now by saying this, i have a handfull of films on that list that i think might have great storys

but all i care is the way it looks

but a lot of those films on that list, just look beautiful and the story is not great

and we should be able to admit that

i know for one thing when it comes to french new wave, i watch them for the way they are shot and not the storys

or if i am watching a herzog film, same thing

SoNowThen

Yeah, so agreed.

Being amazingly shot will tell the story the best, anyway.
Those who say that the totalitarian state of the Soviet Union was not "real" Marxism also cannot admit that one simple feature of Marxism makes totalitarianism necessary:  the rejection of civil society. Since civil society is the sphere of private activity, its abolition and replacement by political society means that nothing private remains. That is already the essence of totalitarianism; and the moralistic practice of the trendy Left, which regards everything as political and sometimes reveals its hostility to free speech, does nothing to contradict this implication.

When those who hated capital and consumption (and Jews) in the 20th century murdered some hundred million people, and the poster children for the struggle against international capitalism and America are now fanatical Islamic terrorists, this puts recent enthusiasts in an awkward position. Most of them are too dense and shameless to appreciate it, and far too many are taken in by the moralistic and paternalistic rhetoric of the Left.

sometimes we feel bad, like we have to care about the plot to love a film

noooo, sometimes its just great to look at the way it was filmed

and that seperation is a tool to great film making

now with Boogie nights, paul was able to take great cinamatogrphy and connect it to a strong story and he interjected a lot of heart into a story that would of been shit in someone elese hands

off the subject, i just re saw the curb your enthusiaum porn episode and you can so tell that bob odenkirk knows nothing about porn and he was just doing a shallow parody of it, but Pta brought a lot of honesty and humanity to it, that one could only get from a fans prospective

and if your a real fan of something that makes you a insider

but anyways yeah i think boogie nights, was able to blend both great art and great story together in a perfect fashion

i don't know, certain moments in the movie were great. i would definitely watch it again. this movie IS much more about the cinematography than the story, but it's about how the story is told, isn't it. Magnolia would be a pretty boring movie (it is to some, anyway) if not for the amazing way it was told. same for all of PTA's work except for Boogie Nights, I guess (which is amazingly told as well, it's just that the story itself is so interesting on its own).

Well, you know what they say: Moving Pictures.

Otherwise, we'd all be better off going to the theatre.

Ughhh. *shudder*

one of the first things i remember about watching magnolia was the feeling of tension and the building of it and how impressive a feat it was

yeah, but how was that tension created? not by the story, but by the swelling music and those sweeping camera angles and amazing performances. it's all about how it's done, not what it's about. you could even have a great story and a piece of shit movie (one movie that springs to mind is Auto Focus, probably one of the most exploitative, mean spirited, and annoying movies that i've seen in a long time).

thats my point everything came together the music the shots the acting

a real masterpeice of a movie

its a shame how when people go on and on about the movie, they dont talk about tom cruise, i have heard people go on and on about philop seymore hoffman and how great he was in magnolia, but not a peep about tom cruise

SoNowThen

When Cruise first came out and said "respect the cock and tame the cunt", I knew I was in for a great movie experience. Especially when the ladies in the row in front of me started gasping. Hehehe. People get so worked up...

But you know who really was amazing in this? Robards. To sit in that bed and be deathly ill day after day, and master the whole elliptical speeches and stuff... incredible. Damn he was a fine actor. He will be missed.

i have heard people diss that speach, and use it as a example of what is wrong with the movie

but they are sooooo fucking wrong

he says it all in that speech, regret is a motherfucker

SoNowThen

High water mark of dialogue:

"You got a girlfriend, Phil?"
"No."
"Get one".
"tryin'"
"Get a good one and hold on to her. All that stuff's true..."

Superb.

Anyone who doesn't like the long Monologue certainly can't quite get the movie. I feel bad for them.

*I hope I didn't fuck up the quotes...*

"Ladies" would gasp. WOMEN would smile, stick it out 'til the end and discover what an anti-antifeminist tone the film actually has.

I loved Autofocus, also.

Just ordered I Am Cuba. Will be watching it within the week, no doubt.
""Money doesn't come into it. It never has. I do what I do because it's all that I am." - Morrissey

"Lacan stressed more and more in his work the power and organizing principle of the symbolic, understood as the networks, social, cultural, and linguistic, into which a child is born. These precede the birth of a child, which is why Lacan can say that language is there from before the actual moment of birth. It is there in the social structures which are at play in the family and, of course, in the ideals, goals, and histories of the parents. This world of language can hardly be grasped by the newborn and yet it will act on the whole of the child's existence."

Hehe.

Norm Macdonald said "ladies" on Dennis Miller live, and Dennis goes "ladies? ladies? whadda we on, an FM show here?"
