I've heard of Neutral Milk. What kind of music is it? I listen to a lot of post rock (i.e Mogwai, Sigur Ros, Godspeed You ! Black Emperor, etc.). I also like a little trip hop (Massive Attack and Portishead), and some other mainstream artists like Beck and Coldplay.

if you like mogwai, sigur ros, godspeed you! black emperor the you will probably like neutral milk hotel.  they're an indie rock.  kinda sorta like bright eyes.  i am the world trade center is intelligent dance music.  they're great too!

I'll check them out. Thanks for the recommendation. If you like the band I mentioned, you may want to check out Explosions in the Sky or Tarentel. EitS is very much like GY!BE. Great stuff.

Yeah.

IATWTC are a great band.  There from Athens originally.

How surprised I was to discover a new band was from the Peach State just like me.  Makes me feel a little bit more optimistic about the world.

Neutral Milk Hotel sound nothing like Mogwai, Sigur Ros, or GY!BE.  Nothing at all.

That said, In the Aeroplane Over the Sea is one of the most vivid, heartbreaking, gorgeous, strange, and mysterious albums of the 90s.  Folky singalongs with dangerously infective melodies, grotesque and brilliant imagery, and whacked out indie rock accompaniment.  Fantastic drummer, too.  Take Will Oldham, toss in some Olivia Tremor Control, add the catchiness of say, The Monkees at their weirdest, and you get Neutral Milk Hotel.  In my Top 5 of the 90s, easily.

Also:  I Am The World Trade Center does nothing for me.  Forgettable, dancy indie-pop.

...what do you make of Magnetic Fields?

I am a total pop whore, myself. Dancy indie pop sounds much more appealing to my ears than some nebulous and rather trendy phrase like "post-rock" (reminds me of "electronica," and remember when that was "techno"? I hate categories and labels, necessary evil though they may be). Give me a 3-minute Spector side and I'll tell you that's all I need, musically- the rest I can leave or take. That's my template. I'll venture outside it frequently, but that's where my heart is when it comes to music. That probably goes a long way towards explaining why I anticipated, say, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs album so much more heavily than this new Radiohead thing (or anything else "post-rock," for that matter) which I eye with suspicion at best (and we already went through our whole Radiohead discussion, you and I, Mesh, so just take this as further explanation of my own personal disinterest and not a more generalized attack).

I enjoyed the 18 of 69 Love Songs that I heard...in a general type of "I like that song" way.  I've never owned an album, though.  I have to admire his talent, musical and in the songwriting vein, but Magnetic Fields have yet to excite me.  But like I said, I've heard less than a cumulative hour of his work.  My opinion on MF is less than established.....

Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy.  i read this a few nights ago, but held off posting until it was confirmed.  but wow, for those of you who don't know the mangum story, this is quite amazing.

http://pitchforkmedia.com/page/news/Jeff_Mangum_Returns#37148

hello again.

for the past few months ive been putting together the pieces of everything ive written in the past three years and its been a revelation. whenever i had the time ive been writing melodies and keeping them in my head for later, and songs just accumulate, im not waiting as some have said. i still dont know how we're going to put it all together, the songs will have more noises and collages in them. because of that we dont know whether this will be korena pang or neutral milk hotel or michael bolton but that doesnt really matter. names are just a box we put things in to separate them, and we're figuring out what box these songs go in.

we dont have a timetable for releasing the album yet, so dont get your hopes up for new songs now. if you want more "aeroplane" just ignore all of this, the songs are songs but they're longer and more free. when jeremy came down after his tour we just spent days playing noise while screaming and it was incredibly liberating.

it has been so much fun that we will for sure be playing a show or two, probably more. freedom is a wonderful thing but at a certain point you need the routines of normal life. ive had that for a while but i realized last year at the show with the livys that the best sort of normal ive ever had was on the road with my friends. getting to gigs late with cars coughing and trombones smacking on doors, the giant egg leaks over the masses, the yolk sustains us, we eat whites for days. it can never be the same but i need to get as close as i can to that again.

so thats all. everything is happening soon, this is the year.

thanks for listening. jeff

edit:  would it be better here?  http://xixax.com/index.php?topic=4855.0

edit II:  whoops

dear friends--

i had not commented on this thread because i wanted to hear back from jeff mangum directly about it-- i sent jeff an email quoting the initial post on this thread yesterday, and he just replied:

hello robert-i am sorry to inform you that this is not my post. could you please inform the good people on the e6 list that this is not my writing? thank you robert. much love-j

this came directly to my email from jeff's email account-- the post attributed to him is 100% FALSE, sorry to bear the disappointing news-- it was a very beautifully written fake post!

you are all beautiful and brilliant kids, it would do the whole world a great deal of good if you took all this great energy and excitement you have been passing around here, rolled it up with your anger and disappointment into a big wonderful pissed-off ball, and recorded a bunch of kickass songs!!! please go right now and make something special, do something great, retaliate against the mediocrity that engulfs us!!

don't just do it for me, or jeff, or elephant 6 (although it would please us all immensely) do it because the world needs it!!

love,
robert schneider

Curious...  why is Neutral Milk Hotel sharing a thread with such an unimpressive band like I am the World Trade Center.

I saw IATWTC at South by Southwest like three or four years ago and it was the funniest, most ridiculously awful thing I've ever witnessed.  It was so amazingly void of talent or even effort... dude hops up and down and waves his fucking hand over this star trek machine that shoots out shitty beats while a chick bops her head and pushes like three keys on a keyboard the whole night... songs were pretty horendous too.

I guess the reason NMH is getting so much more recognition lately is because of a re-release last year?  I didn't know about this... I had been wondering why a 90s band was being brought up by all these kids who think the White Stripes are "an old band".

... you're both following some sort of trend

maybe it was on American Dad or something.

haha, in all seriousness the album garnered a huge cult following through the blogosphere over the past 5 years or so, and i think it beat out ok computer in some notable magazine for the best album of the past 20 years.  i think the cherry on top for all the indie-hipsters was the 10.0 rating at pitchfork (a terrible review by the way).  i was introduced to the album through a music related message board about a year and a half ago.  it was really just a natural progression from the music i had been listening to at the time and at first i didn't get what was so great about it either,  but now i absolutely love it.

its the most spiritual and transcendent record i own and  your doing yourself a disservice if you don't give the album a chance (many chances even).

Jesus, can't someone like a band anymore on their own accord?

If I state it as my number one, it can't be because it's a phenomenal album.  It has to be because Pitchfork garnered great reviews for it, everyone's talking about it, etc. My last top 10 was a long time ago and was lacking In The Aeroplane Over The Sea because I hadn't heard it all the way through and couldn't really claim it as my favorite.  I had heard a majority of it, loved it, never found this obscure thread that they share with IATWTC.

I think really what really incited this post was the suggestion of American Dad.

i agree, and on that note, i'm tired of people throwing shit at  pitchfork .  the dudes write the worst reviews in the world and compile the shittiest lists but they're a pretty great news source. unfortunately, it is the only source of new music for some people .

fucking hell,  argentina scored a goal against germany.
