Apologies if there's already a thread on this: I searched, and was surprised to find nothing, but if there is I'll obviously move the chat there...

So did anyone see this? It's the latest film by Ray Lawrence, the Australian director who made Lantana, about the discovery of a dead body and how it affects a community in an isolated town. I thought it was very nicely done for the most part, with some (predictably, but nonetheless) superb performances from Laura Linney and Gabriel Byrne.

I have a few problems with it, that I'd be happy to talk about if anyone has seen it. I'd be particularly interested to get the Australian perspective on the film (I know there are some in the house...) - I'm sure there are some cultural factors that the non-Oz simply can't tap into going on here. For me it carried a few overtones of Cache, which is unfortunate since its certainly the lesser film, but I'd probably recommend it to most people.

Sorry to double-post, but has really no one seen this - not even the Australian contingent? I only ask again because I'm very eager to hear what an Australian (or anyone else) has to say about this film and its themes. If it's not been seen, or the interest is still nil, so be it - just thought I'd give it one last try.

Fair enough... I often feel the same way about British cinema.

at least you've got mike leigh.

in general, most australian films are by first time directors. after they have their one shot most of them go work for TV for many many years before they get another break. it doesn't help that the films are usually boring. this one seems interesting cos it stars at least 2 ppl who aren't the same 3 that appear in every other australian film, so i might rent it.

I'm hoping to see this soon but I thought I'd add that its based on the Raymond Carver short story that the fishing section of Altman's 'Short Cuts' is based on.

Well let's make it official then:

Trailer here.

Release Date: April 27th, 2007 (limited)

Starring: Laura Linney, Leah Purcell, John Howard, Deborra-Lee Furness, Gabriel Byrne

Directed by: Ray Lawrence

Premise: On an annual fishing trip, in isolated high country, Stewart, Carl, Rocco and Billy ("the Kid") find a girl's body in the river. It's too late in the day for them to hike back to the road and report their tragic find. The next morning, instead of making the long trek back, they spend the day fishing. Their decision to stay on at the river is a little mysterious - almost as if the place itself is exerting some kind of magic over them.

Half of that plot seems like it came from a raymond carver story that was in Robert Altman's Short Cuts.
