I don't MISS it, but I still rent VHS films.. but that's only because its the only thing available. For example, recently I've rented Pandora's Box, Raise the Red Lantern, and the Phantom of Liberty..
Now I'm in Canada so I'm fucked for Netflix and these aren't the most accessible films for me to get on DVD.. so in that respect, I still have a love for videotapes.

i like revisiting vhs once in a while. previews before the feature and everything...

Ravi

Haha, I rent free Criterions from the library.  Life is sweet.

Oh, I still love VHS. How could you not? I tried to hate it but I just couldn't. I wouldn't own some of my favorite movies without it and it's the format I started on.

Just rented some stuff last night...

-Cradle Will Rock
-Kramer VS Kramer
-Nosferatu The Vampire (herzog's remake)
-Sex Lies And Videotape (retry)

i'm bringing this sucker back!

recent rentals for me...

koyaanisqatsi (didn't like it AT ALL, if anybody cares, i'll go into why)
raw meat (not very good)
cinemania (really liked it)
last detail (haven't watched it yet)

got the shooting in the mail today, looking forward to watching it.

not at all. in fact baraka is one of my favorite movies. i even enjoyed koyaanisqatsi until the last ten minutes. i found the footage of the space shuttle exploding followed by the postscript stuff about god punishing humans, pieces of fire falling from the sky, etc (don't remember it word for word) to be downright offensive.

i basically got this message from the end of the film: god punished humans by blowing up this space shuttle. you screwed up earth, and He won't let you screw up space. the end.

Surviving Picasso: Liked Hopkins performance, but not the film. Hopkins was interesting in his portrayal, but the film was too classical in structure to be effective in its subject matter.

the last detail: thought nicholson was great as always...as was quaid. there were a few funny scenes. didn't care much for the ending, which came kind of abruptly and didn't really deal much w/ quaid's character, who was kind of the focus of the story. overall, it was decent.

watched the shooting last night (as per PTA's recommendation) and it was quite something. i really liked it...it was like a film noir on horses. very good performances, intriguing storyline and great direction. the ending was ambiguous and kind of plot-twisty, but i really liked it. i love westerns like that -- where it's some kind of unique situational setup. in this one a mysterious woman hires two cowboys to escort her across the desert. it kind of reminds me of a sitcom (two zany dads adopt a girl and live in an apartment!). anyway, i find that stuff cool.

it was the first monte hellman pic i've seen, and i was quite impressed.

That is awesome, I love that stuff too, the sitcom-like set ups...maybe it's just cause I love sitcoms but I think that stuff can work in movies too. I'm definitely going to check that one out sooner than I originally was, it sounds really fun...I also had no idea Monte Hellman had done it, never seen anything by him.

Anyway, for myself, on the way from Netflix, some stuff I missed out on....

-Trees Lounge
-Ali: Fear Eats the Soul
-Blue (of the Colors trilogy)

umberto d -- great. not much else to say about it.

knife in the water -- didn't like it. i just don't think i like polanski. the only film i've liked of his was chinatown. same way i feel about depalma...i just don't dig him. the only depalma i've liked is hi mom!

The Paper - I liked it besides a great deal of faults to it. The best part was the natural and lively environment it created for the newsroom. The bad part, as usual, were the plot devices thrown in there that hung to the side (sappy story of keaton and tomei and were it leads to, duvall's search for acceptance from daughter). Its not that I don't believe the frantic life of the job doesn't cause this, but its obvious the movie knew its limitations and tried to extend the message as far as it could. That's not necessary because if we live with these men, many of their problems in life in the bigger picture can be imagined and debated by us.

recent rentals for me...

beware of a holy whore -- pretty indifferent towards this one. neither loved it nor hated it; only the second fassbinder i've seen, so i'll have to see more.

the man on the train -- disappointed in this one. it had some clever moments, but overall i didn't think it had much to say. yeah, each one wished they could have the other's life....big deal.

ride in the whirlwind -- didn't like it as well as i liked the shooting, but it was good nonetheless. the tone of the two films is very different. hellman is a very interesting director, and i'm glad i found some of his stuff.

NEON MERCURY

...i just got a liberry card the other day...and i rented these...

which i have never seen yet.....

Naked
.The discreet charme of the borgesee-something
.welcome to the dollhouse...
the man who fell to Earth..
my Left Foot...
