MTV is the only channel that shows commercials longer than they do shows. Their commercial breaks are literally 5 minutes long.

One thing it is not.....a music video channel. If you don't have MTV2, you're basically screwed. I once had MTVX (I think) for a few months before my cable dropped it of the line up. Nothing but pure heavy metal, hard rock, alternative type videos.

Is MTVX still around or did MTV drop it?

I've never even heard of MTVX. Sounds great. MTV2 used to be good, but now they just play whatever teeny bopper, good charlotte, linkin park, 50 cent music that they would play on MTV if they played music videos.

just found this:

musicNEWS:  MTV Dis(miss)es Rock in Favor of Hip-hop
05-09-02 antiGUY

At a time when MTV is receiving their highest ratings ever, thanks to the Godfather of Heavy Metal, Ozzy Osbourne, the music network has made the controversial decision to replace their all hard rock and metal cable channel, MTVx with an all hip-hop channel called MTV Jams.

When MTVx hit the airwaves a couple of years ago, rock fans lucky enough to have the station on their local cable lineups were overjoyed because many felt that MTV had long ago relegated rock programming to the back of the line behind pop and hip-hop on their flagship station MTV.  With the demise of MTVx, hard rock fans now have nowhere to turn for coverage of their favorite music. While pop and hip-hop have ample coverage on various cable stations like MTV, MTV2, BET, MuchMusic USA and now MTV Jams, rock is presented as something of an afterthought.

This change was part of a new "digital cable" package of stations MTV Networks launched earlier this month that also includes MTV Hits, MTV Jams, Nicktoons TV and VH1 Mega Hits.

When asked why MTVx was replaced by MTV Jams, MTV's president of affiliate sales and marketing Nicole Browning told Variety that MTVx was "too much of an alternative music head-banger" for cable operators and for many of MTV's digital subscribers.

In total MTV Networks delivers 13 digital stations, which also includes VH1 Classic, Noggin, Nickelodeon Games & Sports and MTV2.

What's funny is that a lot of people will claim that Beavis and Butthead marked the downfall of MTV (though it was a great show, it just happened to be around the time that MTV started to really blow).

I guess to each his own.  Yeah, Duck Sauce is right to say that it's cliched to speak out against MTV... it sucks... there isn't anyone about age 12 that thinks it's "Cool" to watch MTV.

Every once in a while there's a decent show on there, I flip around in the morning and occasionally find a video on that I like, but for the most part, I hate most of the shit they show.

But seriously, it's for kids now.

But seriously, I think their "True Life" series is very good. It tackles some serious issues. Then there was that show, I think it was called "Flipped" or something like that, but it was like "Scared Straight" - that was one great too.

Does anyone actually know someone that is like the people on MTV?  Have you ever heard the teenagers talk on that network at spring break or wherever they're at?  They're all nuts.  MTV is like an insane asylum with a bunch of cameras.  It's a pretty negative way to portray teenagers, like we must all act like mindless fools, but i don't want to get off on a rant...they're just letting loose...

Ashton Kutcher Pulls Plug on 'Punk'd'

LOS ANGELES - Ashton Kutcher says the joke is no longer on him - he announced Friday that he's pulling out of the MTV prank show, "Punk'd," after two seasons.

His representatives swear it's not a trick, but anything the prankster Kutcher says must be taken with a bit of skepticism.

The last new episode featuring Kutcher, star of "That '70s Show," is set to run Sunday, where the victim of a practical joke will be singer Beyonce Knowles.

"We have had an incredible time doing the show and have decided to stick with the old adage of 'leave 'em wanting more' and that's how we feel with the show," said Kutcher, 25, who stars and co-produces the series.

"Punk'd" is a version of the old "Candid Camera" that preys on young celebrities. Among Kutcher's victims: singer Nick Lachey, who thought his wife, Jessica Simpson, had allowed her hillbilly relatives to move their trailer onto his mansion estate, and Justin Timberlake, who was moved to panic when he thought all his belongings had been seized because he owed $900,000 in back taxes.

"Today is a sad day for MTV, but probably a happy day for Hollywood. Celebrities can rest a little easier knowing that the Punkings have ceased," said Lois Curren, an MTV executive in charge of series development.

It's possible the announcement is a trick aimed at duping new prank victims. A page on MTV's Web site that promotes Sunday's season finale pledges: "But don't worry, the new season starts in March."

I would now like to see a show where celebs have bad stuff happened to them and they just brush it off and say "Oh, I got Punked, right? Ha ha!" and people just say, "No seriously, dude, you aren't getting Punk'd." And then the person really doesn't get punked. And bad shit happens - like people's deaths, having money stolen, etcetera. And they could call the show "Not Punk'd" or whatever.

It would teach people a lesson.

Or they should take it to the next level.

Guy: Your wife is dead.
Celeb: What?
Guy: Yes, her body is in the next room.
Celeb: Oh, I get it, I've been Punk'd, right?
Guy: No.  (crying) Mary's dead, man.  I think she was gang-raped too.  There's blood everywhere.

They go into the room, where there is a very lifelike replica of Celeb's wife, covered in blood.

A fake ambulance arrives to take the body away.

Celeb is crying.  Now the real wife comes out from somewhere and the new host says,"Look over there.  See that camera?  You've been Punk'd to the Max!"

Clever Kutcher: 'Punk'd' IS returning[/size]

LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- Curse you, Ashton Kutcher, for your lying, cheating, punk-ing ways!

On Thursday -- which just so happened to be April Fools Day -- MTV announced that Kutcher and his celebrity prank show "Punk'd" will return to the network with a new season. In December, Kutcher swore the program was finished.

"This is not an April Fools joke," MTV spokeswoman Vanessa Reyes said.

But, but ... what about a few months ago, when Kutcher promised the world he was all punk'd out? Was he just tricking everybody?

"Yes, he was," Reyes said.

When Kutcher announced an end to the series after two seasons in December, The Associated Press pointed out the possibility that the announcement was a trick aimed at duping new celebrity prank victims into complacency.

At the time, a page on MTV's Web site announced the end of season two with this message: "But don't worry, the new season starts in March."

Turns out it actually starts in April, but in this tangle of lies, who's counting?

Here's what Kutcher told The Associated Press in January:

"I've become the boy who cried wolf," he acknowledged, offering some assurance that his decision to end the show after two seasons isn't just another hoax.

"Let's put it this way," he said. "I'm getting ready to start shooting two movies, I'm still working on 'That '70s Show,' I'm producing two other shows for MTV and creating a one-hour drama pilot for Fox ... I don't have the time."

Liar.

Anyway, "Punk'd" returns to MTV on Sunday, April 25.

Unless Kutcher gets eaten by a wolf in the meantime.

Ashton Kutcher As Tommy Lee In 'The Dirt' Movie?

According to the latest Popbitch.com newsletter, Ashton Kutcher ("That '70s Show", "The Butterfly Effect") has been approached to play Tommy Lee in the movie adaptation of Mötley Crüe's best-selling band autobiography, "The Dirt: Confessions of the World's Most Notorious Rock Band". Mötley Crüe bassist Nikki Sixx had previously stated that his early favorite to play him in the movie was "Jackass" star Johnny Knoxville.

Mötley Crüe, who are expected to embark on a farewell tour in 2005 to coincide with the film's release, signed a deal in 2002 with Paramount Pictures and MTV Films to turn "The Dirt" into a Hollywood movie. Rich Wilkes ("XXX") was subsequently tapped to write the script. A director for the project has yet to be announced.

MTV drops 'Music Television' from the network logo

Is it a surprise to anyone actually watching MTV that the network on Monday quietly dropped "Music Television" from its logo? Probably not. It's a wonder that anyone even noticed the difference.

But a difference there is. For the first time in the network's 29-year history, MTV has decided to give the channel's iconic logo a face-lift.

"The people who watch it today, they don't refer to MTV as music television. They don't have the same emotional connection that, say, the people who are writing about [the logo change] do," MTV's head of marketing Tina Exarhos said. Indeed, The Wrap called it "a minor change with major symbolism," while The Hollywood Reporter wrote having "music television" in the old logo was "a constant reminder that MTV was branding itself one way, programming itself another."

Outside of its annual "VMAs" music video award show, and with the cancellation of "TRL," MTV has long abandoned music as a programming mainstay. For years, all eyes have been on genre-busting reality shows like "The Osbournes," "Newlyweds," "Jackass," "My Super Sweet 16" and "The Hills." The network is currently riding high with the docudrama "Teen Mom" and "Real World"-esque "Jersey Shore."

Exarhos said the network's marketing team had tossed around losing "Music Television" from the logo before, but "we had never taken the idea upstairs to [MTV president Van Toffler and MTV Networks chair-CEO Judy McGrath]. We thought, 'No one is ever going to let us do this.' It's the one thing we've never touched," she said. But with the channel's most recent on-air redesign -- something the network switches up every couple of years -- "now felt like the right time."

"It felt like, 'Why have we been so scared when the channel itself has evolved so much over the years?' "

Does the newly cropped logo mean no music at all? "Absolutely not," Exarhos said, pointing to the success of the "VMAs" and the recent Haiti telethon organized by George Clooney and the network. Some editions of the logo, in fact, feature Beyonce at the "VMAs" and Jay-Z on the telethon, while others promote new shows like "My Life as Liz" and upcoming ones including "The Hard Times of RJ Berger".

Beyond cropping out the words "Music Television," Exarhos said her team redrew and minimally tweaked the placement of the "TV" within the "M" (Spot the difference between the logos, pictured above.)

so this means the VMAs can't be called the Video Music Awards, since no one will hav had any chance to actually see the videos they're awarding,.

ignoring that the VMAs havn't been about the videos since the mid 90s..

true, but they still have all those other MTV channels don't they? MTVU and what not? they'll just claim you're supposed to see the videos on those channels. plus with the internet everyone has a different way to see music videos anyway. if anything this is a good development, since it's one step towards marginalizing MTV's impact on music in general.

I didn't watch either live but I did download the Jersey Shore reunion. It was awesome. Sammie Sweetheart and Roid Midget Ronnie have a falling out and when the host asks Sammie Sweetheart if she's okay, she says, "yup. Just hanging out." You're not just hanging out. You're going to be in the bathroom crying in two seconds. And then she was. Hilarious.

I hate to say it, but I am ADDICTED to the MTV show The Challenge. I don't have cable, but they have a lot of the seasons on Hulu and I have been straight devouring them these last few weeks. I used to watch it years ago when the first ones came on (circa 2000), but then MTV wasn't cool anymore, so I stopped watching and now I'm older and don't care what's cool and I'm catching up.

Does anyone else watch this show?

It's the best -- they basically get a bunch of really hot, narcissistic people (usually from The Real World, which is also pretty great) together in a house filled with booze then make them do all sorts of athletic competitions. Most of these people aren't athletes so hilarity always ensues. Each episode people are taken off either by voting or one-on-one competition until there are only a handful left and then they have the biggest competition of the season which is usually an obstacle course that takes a full day and it's filled with endurance tests, puzzles, feats of strength, etc. It's awesome.

The best part about it is the characters. They recycle characters through seasons, so you get to know them pretty well. And it's the type of show where after you watch it, you immediately forget about it, so every time you start a new season and see the cast members that are in this current season you're like, "Oh yeah! I remember that guy! I like that guy!" or, "Oh, I remember that girl. She's nuts. She's gonna be a problem. Nice boobs tho." Alliances are always created and backstabbing always occurs. It's so great. These people literally give every ounce of whatever self-respect they have for themselves for the chance to win a paltry sum of money. They're all dumb asses. And they get HAMMERED. I mean just trashed. Vomiting, black out drunk unconsciousness. They usually get naked, hook up, you know, the whole nine. These are adults. Some of them are pushing 40, but they act like complete children when they get together. And there are always fist fights. Most of the dudes are just complete meatheads at the peak of their steroid cycle, so they're always a hairsbreadth away from flying off the handle and getting into a dust up. And everyone on this show thinks they're a genius. They think they're the smartest person, not just in this house, but IN THE WORLD. They constantly make remarks like, "So and so can't compete with me. He's not smart enough!" and it's said while they're shirtless showing off some of the worst tattoos you will ever see. Oh, and if it's your first challenge, you're a rookie, so you get treated like crap. You're always voted in to the one-on-one competitions and anytime you try and voice your opinion, one of the veterans says something like, "What do you know? You're just a rookie!" It's the best. Nobody respects anyone. All the women are backstabbing mean girls who sometimes even give their bodies if it means they can get on someones good side and avoid getting put into a one-on-one, and all the men are pretty much the worst type of men in the world. And for 10 hour-long episodes, you get to see these people make COMPLETE ASSES OUT OF THEMSELVES!

Please tell me there are other fans of this show? No, I'm the only one?

I dig the show, too. When I was younger, I was into Real World and Road Rules. My liking the Challenge is all that is left of that aspect of my life. The soap opera dramatics are more packaged around silliness instead of dumb kids confessing about life ending drama every drunken night (Real World) so the fact that Real World alum now see athletic competitions as their evolution, I find it to be a lot of fun.

Stefen, I know you dig Bill Simmons so have you heard any of his podcasts about this show? He's a huge fan and got TJ Lavin as a guest to dish about the show once. Lavin admitted most of the guys were heavy into steroids and he was candid about other stuff. It was before his accident and Simmons came up with the Rivals idea in that interview so it's cool to see it being used now. Look it up sometime.

I actually just listened to that interview a couple days ago. It's where I got the You're just a rookie! part from.

I haven't watched any of this current season (Rivals). I'm saving it since I like to watch them one after the other since they're so pointless, if I watch week by week I forget what the hell happened previously.

I just finished watching the last season. The one in Prague. Have you seen it? When C.T. shows up and completely pwns Johnny, I about lost my shit. One of the greatest moments in reality tv history. It was hilarious. Look at him. He's roided out of his mind!

Seeing that for the first time was up there with watching Jurassic Park for the first time. Just in complete awe, jaw on the floor, followed by standing up and cheering.

The C.T. & Prague moment was pretty special. It's the first time I reacted with the same excitement the other contestants generally do to everything. They're always dumb. I know C.T. was bigger and quicker than evryone else so I always liked his physical tools more, but yea, he was bigger than ever. It's weird to see pictures of him during Real World Paris and now because it is noticeably different. Besides, Johnny is a tool. I'm glad the overrated buffoon had his ass handed to him.

I need to do what you do because I watch parts of every season but whenever I try to stay consistent week-to-week, I always forget to tune in. I only really ever see full seasons when I find myself bored and catching a marathon at the perfect time. Otherwise, fuck it.

Johnny is one of my least favorite cast members. There's nothing worse than a follower who thinks they're a leader. Out of the girls, maybe it's Tonya, but it always cracks me up when she gets drunk all the time then vomits all over the place. Most cast members I have a love/hate relationship with where I hate them one season, love them the next, vice versa. People like Kenny, Wes, CT.

They're all idiots. I love it.

I love Darrell. He reminds me of Donovan McNabb and seems way too cool to be on the show. Back in the early days of the Challenge, there was a Norwegian guy from season two of Road Rules and he was skinny as fuck but he killed in challenges. He was owning everyone but he never made a career out of the challenges so he never became legendary, but he had the talents for it.

I love Tonya because I remember when she was on Real World Chicago, she was goody two shoes and shocked by everything a half ugly lesbian black girl did. I loved her dumb innocence and then fast forward a few years and she is a dumb bar star type on the challenges? I kept thinking, what the fuck? When did the transformation happen?

Wes is alright. He annoys me because I bet he kicked the shit out of a dog or chick at least once in his life. He also looks like a few neo nazi's I know. Kenny is funny because you get an idea he knows how dumb the shit is, but he still gets to enjoy getting his dick wet.

HAHA. Did you see the part in The Ruins where Brad gets drunk and starts talking shit to Darrell then Darrell punches him in the face a bunch of times and they both get sent home? It was one of the funniest parts because Brad is the type that NEVER acts a fool unless he gets some booze in him, and then when he does, he turns from some frat boy into a gangbanger from the barrio. I don't blame Darrell for blasting on him, but the way he was coming at Darrell had me dying laughing. "Come on, son. You can't touch me. YOU CAN'T TOUCH ME!" then he gets touched.

Yea, Brad had a weird moment. Generally like the guy, but he baited Darrell big time to fight. Because of how insane he was, I don't think they should have kicked Darrell off the show. I remember even some reconsideration for the fighting policy happening after the incident. However, Darrell handing Brad his ass in two punches and walking away like he could have done a lot worse was awesome. That moment alone made him a favorite in my eyes.

I also like how sorry Brad felt after and how it was funnier because his apologizing made me think he thought he performed a hate crime against Darrell. During the reunion show, I kept thinking how appropriate it would have been if Jesse Jackson was by his side. To Darrell's credit, he was equally cool and didn't want to hang any guilt over Brad's head.

I am watching a little of the Challenge now. A preview says CT and Laurel are hooking up. Sorry for spoiler, but I want those freaks to have kids together and make super human Challenge athletes. Also, good to see TJ Lavin back. I keep looking at his face and how he does normal things to see if I can tell he was recently in a coma, but he just looks a little more serious than before. Otherwise, fine. It's good because after the accident, I remember Google news'ing his name a lot for updates.

Alright, so I'm all caught up on Rivals now, and whoa. This might be the best season yet. I was so excited to get to it because I knew who the cast was and to have that many alpha-males (C.T., Wes, Kenny, Evan and Johnny 50% of the time) on one season was going to be something special. I couldn't wait for the athletic competitions. I was more excited about that than I was about everyone getting drunk, banging and fist fighting, but it's really been no contest. C.T. has out alpha-maled every single other dude on this show. The guy is just incredible. HE HAS NO EQUALS. And everyone in the house is scared to death of him. He has it all. The men are actively plotting to get him out because they're scared to death of him and the women are doing everything they can to attract his attention and possibly hook up with him. C.T. is just a god among men right now.

I really thought Wes and Kenny were going to run away with this challenge. I thought it's one thing to have an alpha-male on your team, but to have a team comprised of nothing but two alpha-males? GAME OVER. But Wes, (who is the closest to C.T. this season in terms of purely being dominant) has proven that he is so far ahead and better than his biggest rival, and current teammate, Kenny, that it's sent Kenny into a tailspin of depression. Kenny can't even sleep. He's a mess. On complete suicide watch. Wes is completely carrying Kenny. I never thought I would see that.

I have a schoolboy crush on Cara Maria.

You could watch MTV's out-of-sync video (http://www.mtv.com/video-clips/xa04vj/vma-2016-beyonce-lemonade-medley-live-performance-vma-2016-mtv) of Beyonce's Lemonade medley, or you could enjoy this trainwreck performance:
