I like Lasse Hallström (I admit, I'm only making this post because I've never made one that has an accent mark).

Chocolat, Grape, and Shipping News are good Hallström flicks I'd say. Shipping News was kind of ridiculous though, as if Burger King suddenly offered salad. I don't know about the Life as a Dog movie or Cider House Rules, are they worth watching?

Gilbert Grape is one of my favorites of all time...My Life as A Dog is cool too. I can't decide whether or not I should see any of his other stuff though, I don't know, I don't want his name to be tainted, The Shipping News looks really lame.

If you read the Shipping News and enjoy it, you'll HATE the movie.

I liked The Shipping News but never read the book.  The Cider House Rules, OTOH, was just no good.  I can't believe the film got so much praise, or that Michael Caine won the Oscar over Tom Cruise.

Ledger in mood for 'Casanova'
Source: Hollywood Reporter

Lasse Hallstrom has found his "Casanova." Heath Ledger has signed on to topline the helmer's Walt Disney Co. period tale, with shooting set to start in August in Venice, Italy.

The casting continues Ledger's busy work slate for 2004. Later this month, he's due to step in front of the cameras on "Lords of Dogtown" for Columbia Pictures and helmer Catherine Hardwicke. He'll then follow that up with a lead role opposite Jake Gyllenhaal as a pair of love-crossed cowboys in Ang Lee's "Brokeback Mountain" for Focus Features. He then segues to Hallstrom's "Casanova," a romantic comedy about the legendary Casanova and his pursuit of the one woman in Venice who doesn't fall prey to his charm.

The project will find him starring as the famous Lothario who is forced to learn the meaning of love after meeting a woman who is immune to his charms. Mark Gordon is producing along with Hallstrom's producing partner Leslie Holleran. Writers on the project have included Kimberly Simi and Michael Cristofer.

The gestating Daughter of the Queen of Sheba has found a director in Lasse Hallstrom. Source: FilmStew.com

Director Lasse Hallstrom has just joined the family of the Daughter of the Queen of Sheba, housed at Paramount Pictures. The film has been in development since 1997, and at one point, Meryl Streep and Gwyneth Paltrow were attached to portray the mother and daughter.

The film, based on Jacki Lyden's bestselling memoir, is about her own childhood in a small Wisconsin town, and her mother's manic-depressive episodes. Karen Croner (One True Thing) wrote the script.

Store Front Pictures president Susan Cartsonis, Matt Williams and Leslie Holleran are producing. Hadeel Reda will be an executive producer.

Hallstrom currently has two films in the can, ready to be released. They are Disney's Casanova and Miramax's An Unfinished Life.

Hallstrom Directing A Christmas Carol
Source: Variety

Universal has hired Lasse Hallstrom to direct its adaptation of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol, reports Variety. Leslie Holleran, Jon Berg, Todd Komarnicki and Karen Tenkhoff will produce.

The trade says the studio purchased a pitch from Komarnicki, who will write the script. The project will be a co-production between the LaHa and Guy Walks Into a Bar.

The story will be told through the eyes of a 40-year-old Scrooge.

For Berg and Komarnicki, "Carol" marks a return to a Christmas-themed project three years after Elf, their maiden producing effort at Guy Walks Into a Bar.

I know you're being sarcastic, but I'm sure Lasse Hallström will bring something fresh to the story.

Hallstrom to direct French remake
Helmer signs first-look deal with Regency TV
Source: Variety

Lasse Hallstrom is set to direct "Anthony Zimmer," a remake of the 2005 French film. Spyglass is financing and has set an early 2008 production start in Europe.

Hallstrom also has made a first-look production deal with Regency Television to develop programming he'll exec produce and direct. Deal comes after Hallstrom directed the Regency pilot "New Amsterdam," which will debut on Fox's fall schedule.

"Anthony Zimmer" will be Hallstrom's next feature assignment. Pic will be produced by Spyglass' Roger Birnbaum, Gary Barber and Jonathan Glickman. Leslie Holleran, Hallstrom's longtime producing partner, is expected to join as a producer.

Scripted by Julian Fellowes ("Gosford Park"), thriller concerns an American tourist who finds his life in danger when a female Interpol agent uses him as a dupe to flush out an elusive criminal with whom she once had an affair.

Original pic was written and directed by Jerome Salle. Spyglass and Canal Plus co-financed development and will produce the remake together. Spyglass, which this summer opens "Underdog," "Rush Hour 3" and "Balls of Fury," just wrapped the Katherine Heigl starrer "27 Dresses" and just started production on Universal's Greg Kinnear starrer "Flash of Genius," directed by Marc Abraham.

"New Amsterdam" marked Hallstrom's first TV job in America, but Regency Television president Robin Schwartz said it won't be his last.

"I sent him the script on a whim, and it turned out he'd done TV in Sweden and many commercials, and he just elevated the pilot," she said. "We might bring a concept to him, early on, and he will bring us ideas he has that fit better as a series than a feature."

Regency also has a deal with screenwriter Allan Loeb, who co-wrote and is an exec producer on "New Amsterdam."

Joan Allen fetches a 'Dog's' tale
'Bourne' actress to star in Hallstrom remake
Source: Variety

Joan Allen has been set to star and Lasse Hallstrom to direct "Hachiko, A Dog's Story," a remake of the Japanese film about an Akita's relationship with its owner.

Richard Gere had already been set to star in and produce the film.

Pic is being fully financed by Inferno, whose Bill Johnson is producing with Vicki Shigekuni Wong and Gere. Inferno's Jim Seibel and Paul Mason are exec producers, and Dean Schneider is co-producer.

Stephen P. Lindsey script is based on the true tale of a faithful Akita dog that kept vigil for nearly a decade, waiting for his master, who died and didn't return home. The dog is celebrated by the Japanese each year, and a statue was erected in his honor in Tokyo. Gere plays a college professor who takes in the dog.

Production will begin in January in Rhode Island.

Hallstrom and Gere last worked together on "The Hoax."

Allen is coming off "The Bourne Ultimatum" and just completed the Paul W.S. Anderson-directed "Death Race."

Inferno is in post-production on the Diane English-directed remake of "The Women," the comedy "Smother" and "The Heaven Project."
