To boost morale around here I'm starting this thread to get people to talk more about themselves and their thoughts on their lives or on life in general.
So let's talk seriously about this - where do you see yourself in 5 years? Where do you see yourself in 10 years? 15?
I feel this is an intriguing topic that will get people thinking about their lives and in the process, again, boosting morale around here because I think some of us MAY be forgetting that in the grand scheme of things, we're all still human beings with lives away from Xixax.
I'm hoping that once this thread grows (hoping it DOES), we'll all feel even closer together than before. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. :)
I'll start out the lovefest.
Next year will be my senior year at University of Wisconsin. I will be writing a thesis so that I can graduate with honors in film.
EDIT: With a Certificate in Business so I have something for the real world if this whole film thing falls through.
After that I have some choices to make. I want/need to go to grad school. I would like to stay here but if I do, I will have to go for my phD. I might take a year off if I go this route.
I will also apply to other schools (which I need help in deciding what schools have good film theory & criticism programs) and likely will be planning on going for my masters if I do that.
After all this school, I want to teach film at the university level.
On a more personal note, I have been dating the same girl for over 2 years and can honestly say I am in love.
Quote from: SHAFTROn a more personal note, I have been dating the same girl for over 2 years and can honestly say I am in love.
In advance, I want to say that if anybody wants to make personal notes such as this, I GREATLY encourage it!
5 years - still in school, hopefully at NYU, probably won't have a girlfriend.
10 years - making my first feature
15 - the big time... that's right. Dunno if I'd be married at this point.
That's the broad scheme of things. Right now, I just wanna finish this damn semester, watch lots of dvds, get into some major classes, get laid.
In five years I hope that the memory of working a regular job to pay for the filmmaking will be a distant one.
Love would be nice, too.
It's tough. A filmmaking career is so unpredictable. What I know is that in 5, 10, 15, 50 years I'll be building a CV with lots of great films.
I have places I want to go. New Zeeland for example. Would love to go there and study philisophy for a while or something. And New York. I'm working on my move there. VISA issues are a bitch but I'll do it cause I want it so badly.
I want to be in a loving relationship...and have a child.
When I make money I want to buy my mother whatever she wants cause she deserves it. A car, a house or something else.
Hopefully I'll have lots of fgriends. That's a good foundation for a great life. Friends.
5 years ill be in college. hopefully, the film program im in now will take care of everything id learn at nyu...i hear that it does, though most advanced students i know end up going to film school anyway. (ive explained the school before in an earlier thread, but if you need clarification ask me) but ill probably be dabbling in liberal arts or psychology
10 years probably working as assistant director for someone. ill complain about it, and wish i was doing something bigger
15 years doing that bigger something. married. hopefully with a little money, but that's not as important as doing what i love.
great thread
Alright, I''ll give some info about myself, but nothing too deep for me.
I am freaking 40 yo and live in Atlanta, so I'll tell you where I've been. I have an electronics degree and have been an electronic technician > engineer in Atlanta for almost 18 years now. I have worked on everything from the laser guided Hellfire anti-tank missle (used in both Desert Storm and Op Iraqi Freedom) for 7 years to wireless communications to designing cable modems with VOIP telephony.
Music has always been my main passion but movies are my latest addiction.....which explains why I am here. And the reason why I just assembled my home theater system that I utilize very often. It's like gold to me.....a real technical toy that I enjoy.

Do that, but most importantly spend time with her.
i dont even want to think about the future
Currently I'm an art director for an advertising agency in Florida. However my wife and I may be moving to London or Edinburgh in a year or so. It's more of an adventure thing, but we're travelling over there in March to see if we like it. If so we'll probably live over there for 2-4 years before moving back to the States. I eventually want to settle in the Tennessee area (love the Smokeys) and continue working in creative.
That's as far as I'm willing to look ahead, though. I've always believed I'd go where I needed when I needed too so I've never made many hard plans aside from few "things to do before I'm 40" type things.
I'll be doing crack and playing punkrock!
I just want to get to Return of the King, Christmas and filming my short film in January. I'm pretty superstitious about consciously looking much further head, despite being quite a rational person. There are too many elements that are out of my control for it to be useful but I dont deny myself the odd oscar acceptance speech fantasy. I want the second semester of my Film technology course to pick up as the first has been pretty uneventful if I'm honest with myself. But right now my aim is to get my work done and go home.
Next week maybe I'll buy a new CD. Not sure though
Five years--Proclamation of filmic ambition.
Ten years--Expression of uncertainty.
(Explanation for avoidance of issue delivered in witty manner.)
In 5 years I expect to have a PhD in film (or at least being close to getting it... defending my thesis), and to be writing/directing feature films. I'd love to be a university professor at UCLA or USC, but also write and/or direct features.
In 10 years I expect to be working in a tenure track position at one of the above mentioned universities, and still writing/directing films. I'll begin my series of filmmaking and film criticism books.
In 15 years I expect to have tenure at one of the above mentioned universities, and probably not still making films. Still writing books about screenwriting, general filmmaking, acting, and general film criticism.
Stranger things have happened.

Here's something that could jump start someone's five year plan.

Pretty funny read to boot.
the future of xixax members will be documented in the sequel to this:

in five years i'll have (most likely) gone through college. weird, considering i'm just getting my applications in. i'll also probably still be an admin at xixax and people still won't realize it.
in ten years, i'll take my film degree and get a job at a video shop.
in fifteen years, i'll disappear suddenly and nobody will know where i went. little do they know i'm seeking enlightenment.

i just applied. cross ur fingers for me!
I don't know where I'm going to end up in five years. Hopefully, things will work out like this: Next fall, I get accepted into a large college with a great film department and devote the next some odd years to becoming a film professor or critic. I don't care which it is, but I'd prefer critic.
Thing is, my grades now are decent at best. I've never taken a film class before in my life so I have to rest on my just decent grades. I don't think I'm going to get in. Actually, I have my first film class this winter semester. Its just an introduction class to film.
If I don't get in, I'm likely heading to Green Bay and interning in a video production company and seeing what comes of that. The guy who runs the company is my cousin and he really wants me to get involved so I may do it. I wouldn't enjoy it as much as the first option.
Concerning my career, I'm not too hopeful about my prospects. Guess I shouldn't have blown off grade school, junior high school, high school and community college. But whatever, I don't see much in being anything great career wise to measure the value of life.
I'll probably still be here, updating future members with news about your projects.

years from now, if anybody here makes it big (which, in a perfect world, we all will), slip xixax references in your movies. spraypaint "xixax" on a wall in the background or have a character named mike wilson or something. we'll be known as the "xixax alumni" and there will be spreads about us in entertainment weekly and shit. that'll rock.

Word... then people will start lying and saying that they were on XIXAX too and we'll all be like "You were? Who were you?" and they'll be all "Yeah I was Beefsack" or "Q"
Beefsack and Q, funniest post in a long time

Definitely. He would be the mailman.
Xixax references have already been promised by a couple of filmmakers here.
I'm such a wannabe celebrity.
Heck, Xixax.com already has a special thanks credit secured in the credits of the film I'm working on now (and anyone who wants an exec. producer credit can feel free to e-mail me 8) ).
HELL YES! WOO!
I hope within the next five years I get my book done and out there. I also have plans to shoot a couple of shorts I have written.
In ten years, I either have my first feature film released or I will give up that dream and move forward to some other respected profession (like a hitman). Also, beeing in love and having a woman I can't live without next to me is crucial.
Fifteen years from now, I'll pretty much need to have my life defined. A wife I love, a family, enough money to spend in movies and turning my kids into film lovers just like their old man.
i have no idea what the hell i'll be doing even the next year, i have my plans but no one knows, but if i would make a movie in the next ten years, one of my characters will have a white t-shirt with letters in black saying "xixax.com... a very food site"

We will be the next new wave -- the Xixax Wave. And pretentious books will be written about our semiotics. As the French New Wave was the first significant gathering of critics to turn filmmakers, we shall be the first internet movie board group members to turn filmmakers.
And, RK is so right. People are gonna be coming out of the woodwork to pretend they were in on the Xixax Wave. "I logged in once and posted something about PTA and MacGuffin redirected me, and that inspired me to write and direct my first feature. Hopefully it'll get accepted to Sundance." Soon, the board (like all the festivals) will get flooded with sleazy LA types trying to find the next big thing -- and Pantalones' worst nightmare will have come true. All conversations will be carried on in emoticons...
And there'll be t-shirts that the New York film underground will wear that say "I got re-directed by MacGuffin".

GT hates everything, though (except for Die Hard, City of God, and Grave of the Fireflies :-P). We're all about the love of movies here. That said, Godardian is great (though he might be a bit too cerebral for a lot of people). Ghostboy or MacGuffin would be great for the job, too.

haha, I was going to disqualify myself because Shaftr had the word "write" in his question and that surely does not apply to any of my talents. Godardian gets the job. I'll just critique his first draft.
Why don't we just take that Oberhausen Manifesto I posted a while back, and change the word "Germany" to, I dunno... "north america"... or "internet board members" or something...

Just stay in school, kids. Going to grad school after that will get you to 25. I hate even the concept of the draft. It's so incredibly unconstitutional, such an infringement on one's rights, but that's a whole other thread.
You don't need to go all the way to Europe, though. Canada will do just fine. I have a few friends who live up there - they tell me it's great. I'm not too read up on its government, either, but from what I understand, it's somewhat socialist in nature, so, you know, it's got that going for it. Viva igualdad! Or something. Wait, that's Spanish. Uh... *goes to Babelfish* vivre d'égalité! (Eh, I don't know nothing 'bout conjugating French verbs. So, yeah, that's the ticket.)

Anyway...At the moment I am in the middle of my first year at Brooks institute of Photography Film School in Ventura, California. That is where they shot the office scenes in Soderbergh's "Erin Brockovich". I am now doing short films for projects for school and what not. The school is three years long so hopefully during those three years I'll have enough credits and what not on my resume (because the school offers internships to work on films) that I will get my first small independant directing job. I also aspire to be a character actor. So...
5 years: Strugging actor/director filing files (I can't wait tables for the reason that I said above at the beginning of the post)
10 years: Repressed and Strugging actor/director filing files
