Quote from: themodernage02why does it say the site is not endorsed by pt anderson when he gave it his blessing?

it is unofficially christened by mr. pta
the only way the site could be endorsed by him is if it was official, which it isn't.  'not endorsed' is more of a legal thing than anything else

and regarding the status of the site, it should be ready very soon.  we have been working feverishly converting the 150+ articles, removing garbage bits of code from them left over from the old site and getting new things ready

the only section that won't be ready for opening will be the feature films section

Non capitalization is so emo.

Which I suppose is why I love it.

The design is perfect. If anything, more drawings! But too much of a good thing might be too much of a good thing, as the saying goes. The article archive is a beautiful sight to behold.

The red vines thing makes me think of War Of The Worlds, though.

It's an old joke.  Steve "Thumbfucker" Oedekerk is not the boss of it.  It can be applied to nearly any situation.

From literature: "What's the difference between a raven and a writing desk?  My ass!"

Witty and hilarious.   :bravo:

Questions answered:

Q: It doesnt work?
A: MWills from MadDancer sent me an email saying their server had a mad case of the digital herpes and we would be up soon. We have to re-upload everything today, it should be back up by tonight...

Q: Articles and videos?
A:The articles are all there, mass amounts of time were spend re-formatting them and getting rid of imdb links and random code...videos will be up soon, the feature films section is a mass undertaking of re-organization and chaos...

Q: Cigarette ads?
A: Yes, Greg had them up. Cig companies were upset that typing in CIGARETTES into google, brought up the pta site first all the time, so they paid him a ton of jack to put up text links on that page, and then when he no longer wanted to run the site, he sold one domain to the highest cig bidder, and the other to me.

Q: I like this design more than the old one
A: We like you too.

but what i can't get used to is how it just stemmed out of nowhere.
did i, in your eyes, come off as arrogant, elitist, fuckfaced? i don't get it.
god forbid i let someone know where the site subtitle comes from
god forbid they go out and buy an aimee mann record and end up seeing her at The Fillmore or wherever the fuck.

without getting too specific, the domain change had nothing to do with the relationship with paul and ourselves, so it's not really to gossip-y that way.

it was a ghost from the past. this scandel will all be revealed on a vh1 special one day, i assure you.

believe me/us, getting everyone to switch and marketing a new domain name once was exhausting enough, but now having to do it again gives us the sads.

i'm not sure but i don't think it's the Ford version he was talking about. according to imdb, that one was released in 1948. cigarettesandredvines.com says "three godfathers (1936)," which was directed by Richard Boleslawski.

hedwig, it looks like you're right about the version of "Three Godfathers" that pta reccomends.ย  I didn't look at the date...all that I read was "christmas western", which Ford's version certainly is.ย  Appearantly the 1936 movie is the penultimate filming of the same story.ย  I still reccomend the 1948 version though.ย  ย

In the latest Entertainment Weekly, Paul Haggis writes in his tribute to Robert Altman...

"I had the great honor of meeting Altman last year.  After the Oscars there's a group picture taken, and I got to stand a few shoulder-widths away.  It was truly the highlight of a great night.  When we were leaving, my friend Bennett Miller invited me to Paul Thomas Anderson's house for a quiet late-night drink.  I'd always wanted to meet Paul, so naturally I went.  And there, on the sofa, at 3 a.m., sat Robert Altman, his honorary Academy Award on the coffee table before him.  I honestly didn't know what to say- what do you say to a genius, someone you admire so much?  I opted for asking if I could get him a cup of coffee or a drink.  He said he was fine and asked where my Oscars were.  I said in the car.  I admired his- and the thought struck me that his looked taller.  He leaned forward and winked: "Mine is bigger, you know."

Will Ferrell cracks up the Net
The comic, with a home-made online skit, is the latest celeb to take the Lonelygirl15 route to (more) fame.
Source: Los Angeles Times

Last week, Will Ferrell became the latest "real" celebrity to star in a homemade-looking Internet video. "The Landlord" is a genuinely funny two-minute movie in which Ferrell plays a layabout who is accosted by his angry landlady. The catch: Pearl, the landlady, is played by a 2-year-old.

"I want my money!" she shrieks at Ferrell's character, then taunts him with a string of unprintable invectives.

Pearl's lines, including her explanation of why she needs the money so urgently โ€” "I need to get my drink on" โ€” are helpfully subtitled.

After being posted on a new video site called FunnyOrDie.com, "The Landlord" quickly went viral and had scored nearly 1.6 million views as of this writing, piling on tens of thousands more every hour.

The questions, too, came fast and furious: What was this new video site, with a direct line to Ferrell's Internet debut? Was FunnyOrDie.com an industry shill set up to generate buzz for an actor with a major picture out?

And who was the toddler whose parents let her wield a beer bottle and swear up a storm?

Reached by phone, writer-director Adam McKay, Ferrell's longtime friend and collaborator (most recently they did "Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy" and "Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby"), confessed to being behind the video and insisted there was no corporate entity involved. "It's just us," McKay said. "That's the fun โ€” this isn't brought to you by GE or Viacom or whoever."

The video took about 45 minutes to make, McKay said. "Will and I were just screwing around and it was like, hey, that's a good idea, let's film that."

McKay plays Ferrell's friend in the short and is also the father of Pearl (it's her real name).

According to McKay, the production company he co-founded with Ferrell set up FunnyorDie.com so they'd have an easy, fun way to showcase their short-form ideas as well as a place less-established filmmakers could come to show off theirs.

They've already shot several other videos, some featuring Ferrell and some McKay. "We put up our funniest one first," he said.

As for his daughter playing the dissolute landlord, McKay said it was no big deal. "She's in that phase right now where you can repeat anything to her and she won't remember it."

Jeff Stern, chief executive of the industry-friendly Net video site the Daily Reel, said there were going to be a lot more of these kind of videos from celebrities, because it's a low-risk, high-reward venture. "It's easy to do, it's fast, you don't have to go through a two-year development process in order to put something funny out that will get to a lot of people," he said. "You put something up that's three minutes long. If it works, great, if it doesn't work, it'll be overwhelmed by other things that do."

Earlier this month, Alanis Morissette's career got a boost after she posted on her website a parody of the Black Eyed Peas' "My Humps" โ€” the one where Fergie brags about how men buy her expensive gifts because they like her "humps" and "lovely little lumps."

Morissette's version keeps the lyrics of the original but replaces the song's pounding bass line with melancholy piano, poking fun at the song's gratuitousness. It has become YouTube.com's biggest hit this month, with more than 5 million views.

But are celebrity viral hits a corporate train wreck waiting to happen? Won't Hollywood's need for control of its content eventually bump up against the near-impossibility of controlling anything once it's online?

Stern says that Hollywood is freaked by the unpredictability of viral video but that for now there's only one way to ride.

"You put it up," said Stern, "and see what happens."

Cj wallis: you're obnoxious and self aggrandizing. You make pta fans look like assholes. My recommendation is to focus a little more on news and less on waxing your own car, to use the man's expression.

"the event was only marketed/announced through this site and the castro webpage, so it was wonderfully fulfilling to know that a small chunk of the site's audience was standing in front of me freezing their asses off."  then: "i breezed past the line and was allowed in before you. now that's not very nice is it? i saw a bunch of you eating red vines. i told myself it was because of the site for self-serving egotistical reasons."
Title: Re: cigarettesandredvines.com - score online/another screening update
Post by: bluejaytwist on November 07, 2007, 04:29:02 PM
sal;

let us all take a step back please for one moment:

the term 'breezed past' was poorly chosen/unintentionally condescending - you are correct (and i will change it) but the rest is all in the usual spirit of mock-bravado-as-self-deprecation i/we've used since fully taking over the site years ago.

the site *was* the only place that announced the screening so as the essentially the site's co-founder -- seeing the sites fanbase standing in the freezing cold was wonderful to see because it showed how much you/we all care about paul and his films. it has nothing to do about me. the red vines line is clearly intended/is a joke.

every single person that was at this screening has their own personal rant, stories, experience they've shared on this board and to friends and family elsewhere whatever. mine, through being a friend of paul's, is considerably different and is written as such. people are going to come to the site to read what my experience/review/thoughts are knowing that my experience was different than almost everyone's there, which makes it news.

i am sorry you had a negative reaction to it.

funny story.

the site has always always, instantly after production ends and before they go into editing we have done an interview with paul. we sent the questions and waited. it usually takes a little while due to vacations/calming down after filming etc etc. it was the thing we kept hinting towards that was major. and we are still waiting for those post-filming questions to be returned. the problem wasn't with paul...it was getting them to paul. he was in the middle of changing assistants, and new assistants are always weary of fucking up and on and on, so the questions were essentially/continuously ignored. it was frustrating for us, as you might imagine...

90% of the fun of those particular set of questions are substantially muted now because most of us have seen the film, so that particular interview was scrapped a couple months back. now pauls new assistant and i are comfortable with one another and are friends etc, so i will resubmit the interview idea once jeff and i come up with new questions in the next little bit.

Yikes...the more things change, the more they stay the same. God I love PTA, but the "red tape" can be brutal (hence my frustration and subsequent "throwing in of the towel".

That being said, I couldn't be happier for Paul, DDL and especially Robert Elswit. It's great to see their work being recognized.

he shouldn't be mad..he doesn't use the p.t. anderson monker anymore.....Paul and his peeps had a chance to buy both domain names..they didn't bite..I had every right to sell.....I love Paul's films, but him (and all the red tape around him) aren't the easy to deal with.....as I"m sure you've found out...

It would be nice if he'd get off his high horse, start doing commentary tracks again and quit going the Spielberg/Coen Bros route with his DVDs....

Anyways, all is good. Just want to make sure you aren't looking a gift horse in the mouth..

BTW, I'm very impressed that you got Last Flowers finished and it's receiving high praise. I always knew you had much talent and I"m extremely happy for you! I mean that from the bottom of my heart....kudos to you CJ!

thank you for the kind words about the short, i appreciate that a great deal.

as for everything else: clearly this has been a thread/discussion that is burning up the boards (last post was april last year?) so i'll keep my thoughts brief. there has been little to no red tape, aside from what i said before about making them re-friendly -- they have been absolute saints to deal with. and i remember taking out a loan to buy that gift horse; but i assure you i am not looking into it's mouth or any other place that is too obvious of a punchline to mention, heh.

the site is massive and needs to be re-organized so everything can be found instantly. once we figure out the shell, the rest falls into place. and yes, there will be xixax love. there is a blog in the meantime. i don't have an eta for the page, but it's a very busy end of the year and i need to have it up before i get swallowed away. so, sooner rather than later.

I love the new design. I was so happy to discover cigarettesandredvines during the build-up to TWBB. A lot of great memories there, checking it practically every day. Which I still do, except the updates are few and far between lately (its to be expected due to the PTA news drought). Although, that should be changing in the next few months.

that sounds great. i hope someone deserving wins it. and by deserving i mean one of us freaks.

and i don't think you have anything to worry about regarding the dvd going on ebay. for starters, since you have no "cover" (what little there was to begin with) the dvd would look just like a burned copy. so already it loses some value. secondly, as i've said before, the only people in the world who would consider paying more than $10 for this collection are the deadbeat freaks that regularly post in these boards.

and most of them already spent their life savings on those damn frogs.

so, wait, is the winner simply the douche bag who gets the MOST referrals?

i thought it was "randomly" chosen. that is your copout right there. there's still a "chance" that Max won't get it, the best he can do by being a fucking scumbucket is increase his "chances".

i did this same thing for a local council library's Wall-E giveaway. i just had to fill out a submission form as many times as i wanted, which included a small quiz on littering. the contest was clearly intended for children. well i spammed the fuck out of it and in the end i got the prize. HA, suckers. (prize was: a wall-e dvd, wall-e T-shirt, wall-e colouring pencils each with individual wall-e motif in a wall-e tin pencil case, wall-e mousepad, and a wall-e sticker sheet!)

the local council should have known better than to give away free PIXAR shit.

No Elswit? Wow. I can't even imagine. Elswit is such a big part of PTA's look. I actually hope this isn't true.

As for shooting in 65mm, I'm a technical dumbass, so what does this mean? What was everything else of his shot in? I just hope he keeps the 2:35.1 aspect ratio. The look of his films is one of the top 3 things I love about his movies (along with the writing and casting).

Quoteshowing PTA shooting tests and operating a 65mm camera used by Kubrick on 2001: A Space Odyssey ....

sorry for asking a stupid question but, does this mean that PTA is ACTUALLY using the same camera used by Kubrick nearly 50 years ago??

Also if so im pretty sure it's a 70mm camera and that the film negative is 65mm. Just reading what it says on the imdb page of 2001.

Someone can probably answer this more in depth, but basically you're shooting a larger image which gives you more information (and a higher quality image) and a shallower depth of field. It's great for those expansive, panoramic landscape shots cause you can keep expose it properly and keep a lot of the details in the image. As far as I know, shooting in 65/70 is only being used for imax stuff right now, so this is really exciting.

To my knowledge, everything else he's done has been shot on 35mm.

Holy crap, they're friends? Why didn't I know this? This is even more mindblowing that the PTA/Radiohead relationship. Someone needs to get them in the same room with Lynch. (Still, 2/3 ain't bad.)

E: I do remember that linked interview, though.

Lynch is too far gone. He needs to get in a room with Harvey Keitel's character from Holy Smoke to deprogram him out of his two wackjob philosophies.. that is transcendental meditation and the even more insane belief that he'll only shoot on video that looks like it's been filtered out of his ass.

And yeah I presume they met when they did that interview years ago.

True words my friend. I wish he could back to his best when he made Mulholland Drive.

This was linked at cigsnvines earlier.  Don't overlook it.  It has a lot of That Moment footage, but there is rare footage (at least, unseen thus far by me) of PTA directing, setting stage in the Smiling Peanut.  It's not often he's shown in action like this and I thought it was amusing how he was vocalizing the scene and admitting how silly it sounded.  This is the second time, at least, I've heard him use the phrase "and on and on and on and on and on."  :yabbse-auteuridiosyncracy:

HAHA. I like when they're about to shoot the Brad the bartender scene and he's explaining to the cast and crew what the scene entails and when he mentions how Brad the bartender has braces he stops himself and he's like, "Yeah, I know it sounds like a stupid movie." Don't remember this part from That Momemt.

"So as I'm saying this outloud I just wanna like not shoot this whole sequence."

that THAT MOMENT doc in its entirety must be so good.

that's because it's NOT IN That Moment..

as explained by ono and cigs and redvines that clip contains some footage not found in That Moment. mainly that pre-shoot explanation scene, and some of the talking head interviews.

why does he have to explain it like that, haven't those fuckers read the script? Well, I guess I can't blame 'em if they didn't. Its pretty long... but having to do that in front of a buncha people staring at you would make anyone think their movie sux

i know! why even have a director at all?? just give everybody the pages and say "Go at it, shoot this fucker!" no need to explain sequences and mood and shit, what's written is what goes, lazy dumbshits who obv didnt even read the script for the movie theyre making ... i mean, it says plainly that he's obsessing over B the B's metal mouth, clearly put before was Don's dental visit to get braces he dont need. is this moron talent/crew illiterate or whuuut???

so stoopid why he got ta splain it like that

I'm pretty sure the way in which PTA directs is to somehow make him the human target, or at least mood-wise give people some sort of anchor.  Sure, he's explaining everything, but his mode of doing so and exasperated enthusiasm at least communicates SOMEthing about how he views the scene.  Or else you have some guy who's just shrugging going "I dunno...shoot what we wrote" or getting overly angry about how people DON'T understand his vision.
I would want to work with a director who acts down-to-earth like that, even to the point of self-deprecation.

Wasn't he only trying to explain that scene to all the extras there, so they at least knew what was going on in there? I'm pretty sure they're not given scripts to read, so he was explaining what that specific moment was all about, but out of context with the rest of the movie, it just sounded silly...

In other news, critic Glenn Kenny recently pointed us towards this article in the Cleveland Plain Dealer about late night horror host Ghoulardi (PTA's father Ernie Anderson) commemorating the 50th anniversary of his first broadcast. There's also a sidebar featuring some nice quotes from Paul. He talks about watching movies with his dad and that he's thought about setting a film in that era of the early days of local television.

"From time to time I've thought about making a film about that era of local TV and the kind of Wild West lawlessness and the things that could happen. When my dad was doing it, it wasn't national, it was local. And it felt like lunch time was drinking time and you could come back to work totally hammered."
