Big Owl

Republic of Loose are fantastic.... kind of funk/soul/fantastic/indie/pop.

Monkey is damon albarn from blur's latest venture. Its a kind of rock opera he's doing in the uk at the moment i think.

\\\\\\\"God damn these electric sex-pants!\\\\\\\"

Stefen

Awesome. I'll check them out. I'm not a fan of Albarn, but a rock opera sounds interesting.
Falling in love is the greatest joy in life. Followed closely by sneaking into a gated community late at night and firing a gun into the air.

Stefen

The Devotchka cover has a Plainview gesture as the cover.

and #1 with a harmonious and lulling bullet....

M83 - Saturdays=Youth

My assholeness knows no bounds.

Sigur Rós

Uh Air France - No Way Down I forgot about that one!

Stefen

I'm forgetting so much.

10.
Harlem - Free Drugs

Garage rock, punk, noise, it's got it all. I love it.

9.
Fucked Up - Chemistry of Common Life

One of the funnest albums I've heard in awhile. The vocals get on my nerves, but the music is so much fun that I can't help but love it. I'll be seeing them in February. Can't wait.

8.
No Age - Nouns

It's gritty and underproduced and that's what makes it so great. Sometimes, less is more. Or better. I don't know. I think I screwed that up. You know what I mean.

7.
Beach House - Devotion

Like being in a dream. I've listened to this album so much, but I can't recall any lyrics mainly because it's the perfect "background" album. Something to put on while you're doing something else.

6.
Portishead - Third

I had been waiting for this album for YEARS (check my clamoring since 2003 in the Portishead thread) and when it came, it was unlike anything I expected. It took some time to grow (like a day) but once I "got it" there was no going back. The Rip is one of the best songs they've ever made.

5.
Quiet Village - Silent Movie

Samplerific. How they do it, I have no idea, but it sounds so good.

4.
Beck - Modern Guilt

Best thing he's done since Sea Change. It's a bit short, but that's okay. I'm sure he cut out alot of filler. It has no potatoes. Only meat. Danger Mouse and Beck were a perfect marriage. I hope they work together again.

3.
The Walkmen - You & Me

Music to my ears. Everything just sounds so constant on this release. They really came into their own and I'll be anticipating the next thing the put out. The one, two punch of On The Water and In The New Year are awesome.

2.
TV on the Radio - Dear Science

DLZ and Golden Age are two of the best songs of the year. This album is just brimming with activity and never gets boring. It's got some duds (Family Tree) but that's what gives it it's charm.

1.
Deerhunter - Microcastle (Disc One only)

I fell in love with this album the second it leaked. When ti leaked, it had no second disc and I haven't even listened to the second disc very much. To me, this album is perfect the way I heard it the first time.

These are the albums that will sum up the year for me. When I listen to these albums after 2008, they will remind me of 2008. My life is lived through music and these albums will remind me of what I didn't accomplish this year.

There were some other great albums that I really liked, but these ones are the definitive.

Some that I enjoyed include

Devin Tha Dude - Landing Gear
Little Joy - Little Joy
Fleet Foxes - Fleet Foxes
Alexander Tucker - Portal
Black Keys - Attack & Release
Magnetic Fields - Distortion
Why? - Alopecia
Sun Kil Moon - April
Fennesz - Black Sea
Harlem - Free Drugs
Wooden Shjips - Volume I
Lykke Li - Youth Novels
Spiritualized - Songs In A & E
Subtle - Exiting Arm
Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks - Real Emotional Trash
Of Montreal - Skeletal Lamping
Okkervil River - The Stand Ins
Nick Cave/Bad Seeds - Dig Lazarus, Dig!
Fuck Buttons - Street Horrrsing
Boris - The new album, can't remember what it was called. Maybe that was last year?
M83 - Saturdays=Youth

Some of the biggest dissapointments to me are.

My Morning Jacket - Evil Urges
Lil Wayne - Tha Carter III
Destroyer - Trouble In Dreams
Wolf Parade - At Mount Zoomer
Black Mountain - In The Future
Tricky - Knowle West Boy
M Ward/Zooey - She & Him
Ryan Adams and the Cardinals - Cardinology
Kings of Leon - Only by the Night
The Hold Steady - Stay Positive

Question - Has this been a really shitty year for hip hop or did I just have a very Caucasian year?

Christopher Nolan's directive was clear to everyone in the cast and crew: Use CGI only as a last resort.

Jeremy Blackman

I have 11th place for those albums that almost made the list, and 12th place for the albums I thought were really good but perhaps flawed enough to be not listworthy. I was disappointed with Sigur Ros, but I wasn't able push that album off my list. (A mediocre Sigur Ros album is still better than most other music.) Mates of State was my recent discovery, and I'm confident that I love it enough to keep it at #1. Ratatat and Velocifero turned out to be durable. I heard those very early in the year and have been abusing them ever since. Seventh Tree would be #1 were it more durable. I'm especially attached to the top 4 albums on this list.

I'm still waiting for someone to mention Cut Copy or Housse De Racket or Ladyhawke or Tame Impala... solid albums from this year.
