Looking back on every list I make every year, there are 10 albums in a somewhat arbitrary order, depending on the amount of plays I've given them by the time I make it.  Other than the one that is #1 or #2, the rest usually end up deleted or falls into the annals of hearing it accidentally on shuffle.

That being said, these two albums I feel are really wonderful, no bullshit.  I was glad to see a new Girl Talk release, but it was more of Night Ripper vein, so even if it's better or worse as people argue, it doesn't matter.  His progression has been all over the chart from deconstructing pop music, to mashup, to what it is now, which is really more sample heavy house than anything.  It's not a bad thing, his live shows are killer, but when it all boils down to a laptop, it's safe to say I'd laugh at paying more than twenty bucks to see him.  Oddly enough, I guess I would pay 20, though.  Guy puts on a hell of a show.

Also, in regards to Lil Wayne... are people really into him?  Is it a joke?  Are we supposed to pretend to like him?  The beats are pretty uninspired and his lyrics are just goofy.  It's not as raw as ODB, and it's not as masterminded as Kool Keith, and he's just carrying the Cash Money legacy.  Am I missing something?

So, here we are for this year...

Runner-up:

Black Mountain - In The Future

She & Him? Really? I love M. Ward and all but....really?

Their reasoning behind She & Him:

Maybe it's just a sweet little folk record -- a tiny, flawless diamond. Or maybe it's a pristine distillation of harmony and craft; 50 years of songwriting experience served up on a spinning silver platter. Either way, it's our album of the year. Produced with touches of girl-group splendor and arranged with a dreamy, old-fashioned vibe, She & Him's debut couldn't be more adorable.

Usually when I see a list from someone on here, I figure a lot of it has personal taste factored in and can't really assess it beyond preference, but I hate when a magazine does a definitive list.  Out of 50 albums in the year, and Fuck Buttons gets snubbed.

What's worse is that they made sure to high rank some of the year's trash by artists who are capable of much better like giving Mates of State a faaaaar too generous 23 out of 50.  When will people learn that Vampire Weekend might be a brief dose of fun, but it is not treading any new water and is hardly worth third place?

Now that I think about it, Black Mountain isn't even on here, which is total crap.

How Rolling Stone can have My Morning Jacket, Guns R Roses and Kings of Leon in their top 20, but not even list Deerhunter in their top 50 is beyond me.

Not a bad list overall, but it really totes the line between mainstream acceptance and hipster credibility.

I wonder if they even allow David Fricke in the meetings for best albums of the year.

As high as TV on the Radio is on most lists, it just doesn't seem to be talked about all that much.

Am I in a cave or do other people feel that way as well?

Then again, the only music magazine I get is Paste (because of that $1 subscription last year) and they didn't review it too well. It is one of the highest of the year on Metacritic though.

Can you people keep it to a top 10? Or is listing 25-50 albums really is that easy?

Having said this, more of you need to listen to The Notwist - The Devil, You + Me

I have listened to it and even though I like it I don't think it'll make to my top ten. Its kind of a sleepy record isn't it? Something good to dream to.

Republic of Loose are fantastic.... kind of funk/soul/fantastic/indie/pop.

Monkey is damon albarn from blur's latest venture. Its a kind of rock opera he's doing in the uk at the moment i think.

I'm forgetting so much.

10. (https://xixax.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.austinchronicle.com%2Fbinary%2F7994%2Fmusic_phases1.jpg&hash=216b7e9af7c654929014029fa9f1d50e95f17c2a)
Harlem - Free Drugs

Garage rock, punk, noise, it's got it all. I love it.

9. (https://xixax.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.matadorrecords.com%2FphpThumb%2FphpThumb.php%3Fsrc%3D..%2Fimages%2Ffullsize%2Fole-807.jpg%26amp%3Bw%3D250%26amp%3Bq%3D90&hash=84d60c511778d744af2d1a41e799aa4e877dec3c)
Fucked Up - Chemistry of Common Life

One of the funnest albums I've heard in awhile. The vocals get on my nerves, but the music is so much fun that I can't help but love it. I'll be seeing them in February. Can't wait.

8. (https://xixax.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi.realone.com%2Fassets%2Frn%2Fimg%2F8%2F8%2F5%2F6%2F20306588-20306594-slarge.jpg&hash=fd683007e1128fa8b39ae6e7860a4e46a57f8d2f)
No Age - Nouns

It's gritty and underproduced and that's what makes it so great. Sometimes, less is more. Or better. I don't know. I think I screwed that up. You know what I mean.

7. (https://xixax.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.cokemachineglow.com%2Fimages%2F7244.jpg&hash=e7231ef6d750dd706983b0464fed69a531591f7d)
Beach House - Devotion

Like being in a dream. I've listened to this album so much, but I can't recall any lyrics mainly because it's the perfect "background" album. Something to put on while you're doing something else.

6. (https://xixax.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fmescritiques.be%2FIMG%2Farton642.jpg&hash=76c10aa2f20408f3169ae1ed7b0368fec2b03667)
Portishead - Third

I had been waiting for this album for YEARS (check my clamoring since 2003 in the Portishead thread) and when it came, it was unlike anything I expected. It took some time to grow (like a day) but once I "got it" there was no going back. The Rip is one of the best songs they've ever made.

5. (https://xixax.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg524.imageshack.us%2Fimg524%2F6058%2Fqvoj3.jpg&hash=d6d80478a9223f7ae845cfcf616cc3386802d99e)
Quiet Village - Silent Movie

Samplerific. How they do it, I have no idea, but it sounds so good.

4. (https://xixax.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.sweetslyrics.com%2Fpoze%2Fbeck%2520modern%2520guilt.jpg&hash=17665c62887185b774e15d3ae9fc1cb8a6eefd55)
Beck - Modern Guilt

Best thing he's done since Sea Change. It's a bit short, but that's okay. I'm sure he cut out alot of filler. It has no potatoes. Only meat. Danger Mouse and Beck were a perfect marriage. I hope they work together again.

3. (https://xixax.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.talitres.com%2FTAL041%2520THE%2520WALKMEN%2520YOU%2520%26amp%3B%2520ME%2520COVER%252072dpi.jpg&hash=db0ddf3b7fda1bdcb1afd77cc346a5803c9e8cf7)
The Walkmen - You & Me

Music to my ears. Everything just sounds so constant on this release. They really came into their own and I'll be anticipating the next thing the put out. The one, two punch of On The Water and In The New Year are awesome.

2. (https://xixax.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi28.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fc213%2Fwhitneysaffel%2Ftv_on_the_radio-dear_science-cover.jpg&hash=af59a66febb36dddcd155cdfa8fffd4a12af0b2e)
TV on the Radio - Dear Science

DLZ and Golden Age are two of the best songs of the year. This album is just brimming with activity and never gets boring. It's got some duds (Family Tree) but that's what gives it it's charm.

1. (https://xixax.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fecx.images-amazon.com%2Fimages%2FI%2F61d9qRtZaoL._SL500_AA280_.jpg&hash=aafe61ceb32610a63eefd528de3440d79edcff5c)
Deerhunter - Microcastle (Disc One only)

I fell in love with this album the second it leaked. When ti leaked, it had no second disc and I haven't even listened to the second disc very much. To me, this album is perfect the way I heard it the first time.

These are the albums that will sum up the year for me. When I listen to these albums after 2008, they will remind me of 2008. My life is lived through music and these albums will remind me of what I didn't accomplish this year.

There were some other great albums that I really liked, but these ones are the definitive.

Some that I enjoyed include

Devin Tha Dude - Landing Gear
Little Joy - Little Joy
Fleet Foxes - Fleet Foxes
Alexander Tucker - Portal
Black Keys - Attack & Release
Magnetic Fields - Distortion
Why? - Alopecia
Sun Kil Moon - April
Fennesz - Black Sea
Harlem - Free Drugs
Wooden Shjips - Volume I
Lykke Li - Youth Novels
Spiritualized - Songs In A & E
Subtle - Exiting Arm
Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks - Real Emotional Trash
Of Montreal - Skeletal Lamping
Okkervil River - The Stand Ins
Nick Cave/Bad Seeds - Dig Lazarus, Dig!
Fuck Buttons - Street Horrrsing
Boris - The new album, can't remember what it was called. Maybe that was last year?
M83 - Saturdays=Youth

Some of the biggest dissapointments to me are.

My Morning Jacket - Evil Urges
Lil Wayne - Tha Carter III
Destroyer - Trouble In Dreams
Wolf Parade - At Mount Zoomer
Black Mountain - In The Future
Tricky - Knowle West Boy
M Ward/Zooey - She & Him
Ryan Adams and the Cardinals - Cardinology
Kings of Leon - Only by the Night
The Hold Steady - Stay Positive

Question - Has this been a really shitty year for hip hop or did I just have a very Caucasian year?

I have 11th place for those albums that almost made the list, and 12th place for the albums I thought were really good but perhaps flawed enough to be not listworthy. I was disappointed with Sigur Ros, but I wasn't able push that album off my list. (A mediocre Sigur Ros album is still better than most other music.) Mates of State was my recent discovery, and I'm confident that I love it enough to keep it at #1. Ratatat and Velocifero turned out to be durable. I heard those very early in the year and have been abusing them ever since. Seventh Tree would be #1 were it more durable. I'm especially attached to the top 4 albums on this list.

With Christmas cash I finally picked up some of the ones I couldn't spend money on myself:

She & Him = I was really impressed by Zooey's songwriting. I had no idea.

Vampire Weekend = This is a nice album without a dud track. The kind of album that will be on End of the Year list, but not likely to be on (or high) a Decade list. Whether or not they have a similar career arc to The Strokes, Arctic Monkeys, Clap Your Hands, etc. (bands who blow up out of nowhere with their debut and seem to fade with each subsequent release) will depend on what they pull off for their follow up.

Jenny's release really seemed to get little notice and I'm really puzzled there as I think it's quite a good album.

of Montreal - I'm not sure why this release seemed so maligned in comparison to Hissing Fauna - simply because instead of tracks having the standard 3 seconds of silence seperating, or was it truly of that much less quality? I think the timing of the record was also bad as quite a bit of other records came at the same time - if I remember TVotR came out then and several others. Skeletal Lamping was a challenging listen and I'm not sure people (myself included) gave it ample time.

Portishead - Third is what I consider the best overall release of the year.

Long way to go for 2009, but it should be interesting if anyone tops Merriweather Post Pavilion for me.

2009 has already started out awesome. Dent May, Timber Timbre, Here We Go Magic, Beirut and of course, Merriweather Post Pavilion, which could very well end up being one of the best albums of the WHOLE decade and a sign of things to come in the 2010's.

That is to say, if I hear bands that I enjoy who have albums that may have come out in 2008.  Seeing Pitchfork this year, as in the past, will definitely send ripples into my future 2009 list.
