Yeah, the PTA/Altman connection has been done to death here, I'm sure.  Magnolia is Shortcuts for all intents and purposes, climactic natural disaster ending included.

But did you realize that the connection deepens with regard to Harry Nilsson?

You know, that "Lime in the Coconut" guy, that 60s/70s pop/rock singer/songwriter  Harry Nilsson (http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&uid=CASS805141140&sql=Botkxu3u5andk)?  That "Everybody's Talkin' At Me" Guy...you know the one.

A few things about PTA/Altman/Nilsson:

1.  Nilsson wrote most of and sang some of the songs from Robert Altman's Popeye.

2.  Nilsson wrote the song "One."

3.  PTA used Aimee Mann's cover of "One" in Magnolia, his homage to Altman and specifically to Short Cuts.

4.  PTA used "He Needs Me," a song written for Altman's Popeye by Nilsson, as a jumping off point in he and John Brion's scoring of PTA's follow-up to Magnolia, Punch-Drunk Love.

You guys are more obsessed with PTA than I'll ever be; is there more to add to the PTA/Altman/Nilsson subtext?

Barely relatable note:  Nilsson's "Jump Into The Fire" was used by Scorcese in GoodFellas, a film to which many feel Boogie Nights was PTA's homage.

I always thought Magnolia was closer to Nashville than Short Cuts..... either way they are all great flicks.....

PDL and Popeye are coming to DVD on the same day.... yay.

PTA called Magnolia "Short Cuts on speed." I prefer Nashville to Short Cuts, but they're all of a type, I suppose.

i like nashville.... it's funny ... the elliot gould cameo.... the way the characters are introduced is fun.... and the mock cover art or crappy tv commercial intro .....

That really only counts as 2 connections to Schmilson
